Chapter 9

Refuse To Lose

The headaches and dizziness afterwards were the worst part. Sometimes, Yoona would skip out on drinking to avoid it, but other times, she had no self-control. She’d drink until she couldn’t feel her heartbeat, and she’d dance until she couldn’t feel her toes.

But having been drinking for a year now, instead of taking the pain away, it was only starting to hurt her.

Yoona held her head, groaning at the slightest touch.

Ugh. Hangovers.

She rolled onto her stomach and ruffled her hair. She was wide awake, but the scent of the bed was enticing her to sleep more.

The scent of the bed.

Like vanilla.

Like Yuri.

Yoona’s head shot up at the thought. Slowly, she turned to the unusual extra weight upon the bed.

There slept no one else beside her but Kwon Yuri. Her beautiful tutor.

Oh . Did I…?

Yoona would’ve ran out of the door as soon as possible after every one night stand, but this was Yuri. This was the girl she had been gradually falling for. If anything, she’d want to go at it again.

Yoona only stared, afraid she’d fall apart if she initiated the slightest touch. It was wrong of her to think stares were harmless because the next thing she knew, Yuri stirred in her sleep, making the former look away.

The deer lifted up the blanket to check if her clothes were still on. The only thing taken off was her jacket.

Yoona checked Yuri’s and it was the same for her.

Should I leave? How’d I even get here?

Yoona sat up on the edge of the bed, she examined the room with fascination. It wasn’t as furnished as hers but it was something she didn’t mind coming home to. The bed was even more inviting. You could sink into it and just doze off without even knowing. With Yoona’s, she always felt as though it was rock solid. She had to change positions every now and again just to go back to sleep.

With nothing else to do, Yoona checked her phone.

13 missed calls and 4 messages from Sooyoung.

Ah man.

She swiped it opened and read them.

From: Dumbyoung :P

Where you at

From: Dumbyoung :P

Bruh we gotta go where r u

IVE SEARCHED THE WHOLE PLACE DID U LEAVE ME FOR SOME CHICK

From: Dumbyoung :P

YOONA IM GONNA KILL YOU

Yoona sighed and opened snapchat on her phone. She turned and snuck a picture of Yuri, putting the caption ‘guess who I ditched you for’ before sending it to Sooyoung.

As she was excitedly typing, Yuri had felt the movement on the bed. Her eyes slowly opened.

She cutely rubbed them before they adjusted to the person in front of her.

“You’re awake?”

Yoona abruptly turned in shock. “Y-Yuri! Hey! I…didn’t know whether to wake you or not…”

Yuri merely blinked at the younger girl.

“How’d I get here?”

“With your legs, apparently.”

Yuri sat up and again, rubbed her eyes. Her hair fell over her shoulders, silky and shining. Yoona wanted to run her fingers through them.

The former stood up and opened the curtains as the sun’s rays blinded Yoona’s eyes.

“Ughhh.”

Yuri brushed it off and attended the bed, quickly fixing it and ushering Yoona off.

“What happened last night?”

“Well, after you ditched me to get drunk, you ended up at my front door, intoxicated. I’m guessing you went to that club down the street. You even-”

Yuri was reminded of the ‘almost kiss’ last night. The feel of Yoona’s lips against her skin. Unconsciously, Yuri reached up to touch her shoulder.

Yoona’s head fell in shame. “I’m sorry…about the ditching thing…”

Yuri scoffed. “Important stuff, huh?” She resorted back to being her cold self.

“I swear I didn’t mean to skip out. Soo wanted-”

“It doesn’t matter, Yoong.” Yuri finished with the bed and went off to her wardrobe.

“Yoong?” the deer raised a brow. Did she hear correctly? Did Yuri just call her by her nickname?

“I said Yoona.” The pink tint on Yuri’s cheeks begged to differ. “Here.”

Yuri gave Yoona a pair of jeans and a simple shirt, trying to get past the mistake she’d just made. “Take a shower. You stink.”

Yoona felt horrible for having to lie to Yuri, but she didn’t mind ending up at her house. She took the clothes and thanked the black pearl before making her way to the bathroom.

As she was about to close the door, she turned to Yuri. “Yuri…”

The girl owning the name looked up.

“You can call me Yoong.”

Yoona smiled before closing the door, not missing the slight grin from Yuri herself.

After showering, Yoona walked out to find her jacket on the bed. Yuri was busy on her phone before she spotted Yoona.

“You have to leave. My dad’s going to flip if he sees you.”

“He’s gonna get mad at you for helping a drunk? I doubt he’s that heartless.”

Yuri only looked down at her feet. “If he sees me, I’ll tell him I’m your friend.”

“It doesn’t work like that with him.”

“Are you serious? What kind of father…”

Yuri grabbed Yoona’s jacket and gave it to her. She pushed Yoona all the way towards the front door, ignoring the younger’s protests.

Opening the door, she pushed Yoona out. “What? No goodbye kiss?”

Yuri had to restrain herself from remembering the fact that Yoona had a crush on her. She had to put the confession to the side first.

“No.” The tight hold on her wrist was enough to stop Yuri from closing the door.

“Wait.” Yoona yanked Yuri to bring her closer. “Hang out with me today.”

“Are you kidding? I had to spend the whole night with you.”

Yoona smiled. “And I thank you for that. I just want to make it up to you for skipping tutor. I wouldn’t have missed it for the world.”

But you did.

“You don’t have to.” Yuri tried to tug away her hand, just like Yoona tugged at her heartstrings.

“I want to. Just let me take you out for lunch, at least.” Yoona’s hold was starting up the stinging pain of the bruises on her wrists. She was hurting her.

“You’re really persistent you know that?” That’s not a bad thing.

“Persistence is key.”

Yuri turned her head towards her father’s room, and then back to Yoona’s hopeful eyes. You couldn’t say no to it.

“Fine.”

“YES!” Yuri rolled her eyes and felt the grip on her wrist loosen.

“I need to tell my dad first.”

“He’ll be okay with it?”

Yuri nodded. “I’m going to my mum’s today anyways.”

Yoona waited for about 5 minutes before the tanned beauty walked out of her father’s room. She closed the door behind her. After grabbing her bag, she began following Yoona to the bus station.

“You want me to carry your bag?”

“I’m fine. Where are we going?”

A wide grin formed on Yoona’s lips. “Somewhere.”

Yuri hated surprises, but the amount of eagerness evident on Yoona’s face made the former excited. Slowly, she could feel herself falling.

***

“Oh my god.”

Jessica stopped drinking her smoothie and turned to the shikshin in front of her. “Now what?”

“Yoong slept at Yuri’s house last night!”

“Wait what?” Jessica grabbed Sooyoung’s phone and took a good look at the screenshot. A picture of elegant beauty sleeping peacefully in the morning. A picture of Yuri in the same bed as Yoona. “Oh my god.”

“Exactly. Do you think they screwed?”

“Why the hell are you asking me? Call her.”

Sooyoung dialled her friend’s number and eagerly waited for her to pick up. It was bad enough the choding’s parents were looking for her. What excuse was she supposed to come up with then?

After a few rings, she heard her voice on the other line.

“Whaddup?”

“Where the hell are you?”

Yoona could tell her friend was mad, but you couldn’t blame her. She was drunk. Drunk people do stupid things. Like casually finding their crush’s houses and spending the night there.

“Nice to hear your voice again, bud.”

“Your parents are looking for you. I had to lie and tell them you were still asleep. You know they expect me to look after you right? If they find you knocked out in a ditch, they’re coming after me. I’m dead, Yoona. Dead.

Yoona and Jessica had to roll their eyes at their friend’s distress. “You’re not dead, idiot. Yuri looked after me last night.”

“Looked after you as in?”

“Not in that way.” I wish. “But she made sure I stayed safe.”

“I bet you guys screwed each other but she’s too shy to admit.”

“Will you not? She can hear you.”

Sooyoung chuckled. “She’s still with you? I would’ve expected she’d kicked you out of the house by now.”

“My charms can get any girl to beg on their knees.” After saying that, Sooyoung heard Yoona groan in…pain?

“Yeah. Charms.”

“Listen. I gotta go. I’m taking Yuri out for lunch. I’ll call mum and dad to tell them I’m fine.”

“What? You’re eating Yuri out for lunch?”

“I DIDN’T SAY THAT.” Yoona hung up before Sooyoung could embarrass her even more. She then turned to Yuri, their faces inches away from each other. They didn’t expect so much people to take the bus. There was barely any room for more passengers. Hell, there was barely any room for the both of them.

Strangers were pressed against strangers, but Yoona didn’t want anybody pressed up against Yuri. Except herself.

She was holding onto the bus handles above her head as Yuri’s hands kept a tight grip on Yoona’s jacket. She had nothing else to hold onto but the girl in front of her.

Yoona took note of Yuri’s pink cheeks. The older girl could feel Yoona’s breath just above her ear, oddly calming her. The younger reached down to tuck a strand behind her crush’s ear, smiling as the tint became more evident.

“Seriously. Where are we going?”

“You’ll see. I’m craving my favourite food.”

“What’s your favourite food?”

“You’ll see.” Yuri huffed in frustration. It was just food. What was so important about the identity of Yoona’s favourite food? Besides the fact that Yoona was in love with it, Yuri really had no idea.

“I’d really appreciate it if you took your hand off my hip.”

Yoona looked at her confusedly. “What are you talking about? My hand isn’t on your hip.”

“Then whose-” Yuri looked down. “-you idiot! It is!” Yuri wacked Yoona’s hand away, making the latter laugh.

Suddenly, the bus had turned a sharp curve at the wrong time, making everyone collide into one another. Yuri found her face buried in Yoona’s shoulder and could, once again, feel soft hands on top her hips.

“Are you okay?” Yoona smirked. It was incredible how she didn’t need to hold on to the handles.

“I’m fine.” Yuri’s voice was muffled.

“Do you want me to take my hands off your waist?”

Yoona didn’t get an answer right away, but when it finally came, she smiled.

“…No.”

They said nothing after that.

***

The surprise was a letdown to Yuri. She expected Yoona to be into healthier foods or at least judging by her house, something a bit more luxurious. But one look at the big sign atop the building, and the giant, round flatbread beside it, Yuri found the younger’s taste in food to be unpleasant.

“I highly advise you to avoid the kid’s corner. There’s things in there that I never thought could come out of a child.” Yoona wasn’t the sharpest tool in the shed, so she didn’t quite notice the disgust on Yuri’s face. Partly from what Yoona said, but mostly from the actual food.

At the slightest touch to Yuri’s wrist, she jerked her hand back and reeled it in towards her chest. Yoona was taken aback judging by the look she had on her face.

“Are you okay?”

Yuri nodded.

“Is something wrong?”

Yuri only stood, contemplating.

“If this is about that money thing again, I don’t mind paying. It’s totally fine.”

“It’s not that.”

Yoona looked at the door, then back at the older girl. She was confused and didn’t know why Yuri was acting so defensive. She wanted to, but she felt it would only dig her into a deeper hole.

“I’m not really up for…pizza…”

“Oh…” Disappoint was clear in Yoona’s voice. Obviously, seeing as she was quite excited to eat the beautiful creation. But she wanted Yuri to enjoy herself, so in an attempt to seem less bummed, she darted her eyes around the area.

“Let’s walk around. There’s heaps of other places we could eat.” She gave a reassuring smile to Yuri before trailing off beside her.

Yuri could only stay silent, guilty for hurting Yoona.

After about 5 minutes of walking with Yoona occasionally mumbling under her breath about how good the food looked, they both agreed on eating at a Bistro down the road.

It was soothing, and the food was cheap so Yoona didn’t have to pay that much, or so Yuri thought.

The 5 plates situated in front of the younger girl almost gave Yuri a heart attack. Just looking at it made her feel fat but then looking at the skinny girl in front of her, she wondered if the food could even fit into Yoona’s stomach.

“Are you…going to eat that by yourself?”

Yoona looked up like a deer caught in headlights. “Did you want some?” She asked with a mouthful of food.

Yuri shook her head before smiling down at her lone plate, trying to get Yoona’s cute expression off her mind. She felt foolish for even crushing on her, not knowing what she got herself into.

It was inevitable to Yuri, though. How could you not fall for a cute, sensitive soccer player who’s drowning in other people’s love?

“Try this. Best dish on the table.” Yoona motioned her spoon in front of the older girl’s mouth.

Yuri didn’t bother to refuse. She leaned in and allowed the younger to feed her. It was actually quite delicious, but her heart was beating too fast to think about the taste.

“Good?”

She nodded cutely, making Yoona smile.

I’ll feed you for the rest of my life if I have to.

Yoona continued feeding Yuri different dishes, enjoying the fact that she didn’t mind. It took them both quite a while to finish their food but Yoona didn’t care. She only thought about the way Yuri’s face would change with each dish.

If she didn’t like it, her nose would scrunch up and her fingers would curl in distaste. If she liked it, Yuri’s eyes would glimmer and she’d give a thumbs up with the biggest smile. She wasn’t the Yuri from this morning, Yoona thought. She was much more playful. Much more enthusiastic. All too addicting.

She’d never had these feelings before. Not even with Taecyeon. She didn’t think they were that important to delve into before, but the butterflies in her stomach and the tingling in her fingertips got her wondering.

What does Kwon Yuri do to me?

***

A nice stroll in the park was a good way to end the day, Yuri suggested, and Yoona couldn’t help but agree. The sun was slowly setting as their shadows shortened, relishing in the afternoon breeze.

“Yoong?”

“Hmm?” Yoona hummed with a smile as she heard her nickname past the older girl’s lips. It felt so new, yet, so right.

“I’m sorry.”

Yoona stopped walking and looked straight at Yuri, confused. “Why are you saying that?”

“I know you were excited to go to the pizza parlour.” Yuri fiddled with buttons on her jacket, trying to avoid Yoona’s gaze. “We should’ve eaten there instead of wasting our time to find a different place.”

She heard the younger girl softly chuckle after a while, and quickly looked up. Yoona was smiling down at her with the smallest glimmer in her eyes.

“As much as the walk was a hassle, I wouldn’t mind doing it again.” Yoona continued on walking with Yuri right beside her. “You have your reasons, and I respect you too much to dive into them.”

She motioned Yuri to sit at the nearby bench as she followed right after, keeping close to the older girl to feel warm in the late afternoon air. Neither of them seemed to mind.

“Besides, bistros are actually pretty cool. I’ve never been to one before.”

Yuri smiled at how understanding the younger girl was.

How do I get myself out of this mess?

“You’ve never been to a bistro before?”

“My parents never took me to one, and honestly, I never had time.” Yoona fidgeted with the cup of coffee in her hands. She placed it in Yuri’s lap, offering her a drink.

She spoke too soon to let the older girl protest. “Drink. The weather’s starting to get cold. Can’t have a sneezing angel now, can we?”

Yuri blushed, Yoona gave her the most charming smile. Yuri drank, Yoona was mesmerised. Yuri her lips, Yoona had fallen. It were simple gestures like those that Yoona missed. She’d realised how much time she’d wasted in one night stands and drunk souls that she had lost touch of her inner desires.

Those ones that are only expressed when you’re with a certain someone. When you crave for nothing but them. Even just a simple kiss is enough to get you through the day.

Yoona needed something. She needed a reminder that this was real. This wasn’t just infatuation or admiration. She needed to know it was much more. But how? What did love feel like? Was it even something you could feel? Did it come unexpectedly?

She was so confused and so lost, her mind was boggled with different emotions. Was this love? Was this as ‘real’ as it gets?

Her hands shook against her thighs. She didn’t know whether it was nervousness or from the cold. She didn’t know whether to be worried about herself or mad about the weather. Nevertheless, Yuri noticed it. She always did.

The cup in her hands were long forgotten. Instead, they were now wrapped around Yoona’s as she slowly blew hot air on them, keeping them warm.

Yoona’s heart paced but her hands stilled. Her mind wasn’t boggled anymore, because the only thing she was focused on was the angel in front of her. Not even God above could stop Yoona from loving an angel. But honestly…

What is love?

The question was so short, but it held so much meaning. The person’s answer told so much about them and explored their beliefs.

But how could it explore Yoona, when she didn’t have an answer?

Their hands were still linked. Even after they had left the park. Even after they had caught the bus. Even after Yuri snoozed against Yoona’s shoulder. Their hands were still linked.

Up until the point where they parted. Up until Yuri said she’d see Yoona in school. Up until Yuri gave one of her last smiles for the day.

Yoona still thought.

Is this love?

You're a wonderful writer. I _really_ enjoyed reading this piece of fiction. I especially love the portrayal of Yoona in this story. Close enough to reality but different enough to make it fictitious.

Perfect icing to the cake is the fact that your stories are complete and you don't leave us underlings flapping in the breeze, yearning to be rescued from cliffs (and whatnot).

Thank you and keep it up!
