Chapter 28

Refuse To Lose

It was weird.

She was sitting on the edge of the bed she lived in for the last couple of weeks with barely anything strapped to her body and the weight lifted off her shoulders were agonisingly uncomfortable. The sling was starting to get less annoying than the first day she woke up with it and the pain in her collarbone was more bearable.

She couldn’t get any sleep last night knowing she’d be out of the hospital in the next few hours and back at home. She missed home, her own bed and her parents’ cooking. She missed playing soccer and hanging out with her friends.

She missed Yuri.

Three knocks at the door had caught the young girl off guard before a tall, broad man stepped into the room. He had a bright smile. The brightest Yoona had ever seen him.

“You ready to go, champ?”

Yoona’s smile was a little less cheery than his. “Yeah. I guess I am.”

He proceeded to grab whatever was left of Yoona’s things. “Your friends are waiting at home and your mother’s getting your meds from the doctor. You okay to stand?”

“Of course I’m okay to stand.” Yoona said. “I take walks, dad. I’m not paralysed.”

He gave a chuckle, glad his daughter was still able to make jokes with her old man. Yoona stood and led the way out the room, passing by a couple of nurses and patients.

Yoona wasn’t thinking. She had a billion reasons not to, one of them being Kwon Yuri. Not once had anyone mentioned her today and she was craving to know how the girl was doing. Her dad didn’t even tell her whether she was waiting at the house as well.

God, it felt like years since she’d seen her. Did they break up? But they couldn’t have. Yoona didn’t think they did and Yuri never mentioned it so technically, they were still dating. Maybe she should drop by Yuri’s house before going home.

“Woah, watch out.” Yoona’s father grabbed her by her working arm and pulled her to the side of the corridor. The passing doctor gave a small smile as if saying ‘it’s okay’.

“You need to watch where you’re going. I thought the drugs would’ve worn off by now.” He ruffled her hair before pushing her forward to continue.

Yoona wasn’t thinking.

“Hey honey.” They met up with Yoona’s mum at the elevator, all three of them about to walk out the door. “Stay here. Your father and I’ll bring the car over.”

She thought it was maybe to give her time to forget about this place because Yoona had the capability to walk all the way to the car, or maybe her parents just didn’t want to strain her. But it was her upper body that was damaged, not her legs.

She watched them walk out the door and waited. So many times, the door would open and so many times, she’d never expect it to be her parents. As she stood there, she wasn’t waiting for them.

She was searching for a warm smile and glimmering eyes. Tanned skin she’d give anything to touch. It was bad for her to want someone like this and it was weird how long they’d stayed apart.

Maybe it was just wishful thinking, but if wishful thinking made her a little less insane, Yoona would wish for Yuri her whole life.

Why aren’t you here?

Yoona would never think it was her fault because Yuri never blamed her for it. Yoona knew Yuri loved her almost as much as she loved Yuri. Yuri would give her the world if her deer wanted it. But all Yoona ever wanted was her.

“Are you waiting for someone?”

It was an angel’s call and Yoona felt like she was hearing things she shouldn’t. She held onto every bit of her senses, drowning out everything that didn’t make sense. But she still heard that voice.

“Yoong…”

Is this what she was waiting for? Yoona didn’t answer. She only stood still, looking straight ahead. A soft, familiar hand landed on her shoulder. The touch was so light as if the person was afraid Yoona would break at any moment. As if Yoona was the most fragile thing on the planet.

She turned her head and met glimmering eyes and tanned skin she’d been dying to touch. But the warm smile was a frown and the brows were arched in concern.

This was only half of what she had wanted.

“I tried to get here before you got out of your room but there was traffic and when I went up, you were already gone. I was planning on staying at your house but I wanted to be alone with you and I-”

Yoona wanted to kiss her. But she didn’t because the sound of her lover’s voice was too precious to ignore. She let her ramble on as her brows deepened and the soft hand on her shoulder tightened.

You could say Yoona was speechless. The words flew out of the older girl’s mouth like music and Yoona had thought it was rude to just stand there and stare at her. But she’s done that a million times before and the only rude thing to do right then was to interrupt.

She’d let her continue. She’d let her continue forever if it meant she’d listen to her talk. Because Yuri barely talked.

“-but please don’t think I hate you because that’s the last thing I want you to think and maybe I’m stupid. I mean, I am stupid for not texting you or telling you anything but I just wanted to be alone and get used to having no dad in the house. It-”

It dawned on Yoona that the older girl had not planned this at all. She was close to tears and her words were starting to slur. They connected with each other and jumbled up. She wasn’t making sense now.

Maybe it was a good time to stop her.

Yoona lifted her pale hand up to touch Yuri’s cheek and the latter’s voice stopped flowing. Now, it was just her breaths that could be heard by Yoona.

Yuri’s hand fell from Yoona’s shoulder, grasping at the hem of the younger’s white shirt. Her other hand instantly shot up to mimic the other.

“Say something.” Yuri whispered. “Please.”

Yoona smiled.

“I love it when you ramble.”

There was a moment of silence before the cutest, little giggle Yuri had ever given erupted between her lips. There was no way Yoona couldn’t kiss her after that.

Her lips tasted sweeter than the last time she’d kissed Yuri.

Yoona turned when she heard her father call from outside. He had a wide grin on his face, waiting for both girls to jump in the car.

Yoona took Yuri’s hand and without another word, she pulled her along with her. God, she missed holding it.

Yoona never said she accepted the apology but by the small smile upon her face and the fact that she held Yuri’s hand during the whole ride, it was true that actions spoke louder than words. Yoona’s actions were bellowing.

***

By the time Yoona walked through the front door, she had completely forgotten her friends were waiting for her, so you could imagine the look on her face when she’d turned up at a noisy house.

Hyoyeon, Sunny and Seohyun had found their way there as well. Yoona didn’t know if she should consider it as trespassing but if her parents knew then it must’ve been okay.

“Hey buddy, you’re finally home!” Count on Sooyoung to be the loudest out of the bunch. “You found Yuri too!”

The girls came over, hugging Yoona one by one as Yuri stood behind her, watching everyone interact.

“Your dad decided we could take you out for dinner tonight as long as we don’t strain you too much. I hope you don’t mind burgers.”

Yoona smiled and turned to face the girl behind her, the one on Yuri’s face outshining the one on Yoona’s. They stared for a bit, speaking with their eyes before Hyoyeon snapped her fingers for attention.

“You two just gonna stand there or are you gonna go get ready?”

“We have to leave soon!” Tiffany ushered the couple towards the stairs, motioning them to go up. “No funny business either. We don’t have the time to wait for you guys.”

Yoona didn’t know how to respond to that without having to blush. Neither did Yuri. But it was a weird thing to say to someone who just got out of hospital. Physical activity was obviously banned until Yoona’s body healed so ‘funny business’ wasn’t going to happen.

Not yet anyway.

Yuri’s small hand laid upon Yoona’s lower back as they both walked up the stairs and the latter couldn’t help but feel it was unnecessary. Again, it was her upper body that kept beating her up, not her legs.

“I’ll…get you something to wear.” Yuri was acting timid as she led Yoona to sit on the edge of her bed. Maybe it was because it had been ages since they’d talked. It felt like they were on their first date again.

Yuri wandered towards the corner of the room, smiling. “Remember when you used to live in here?” She said as she opened the closet doors.

Maybe she wasn’t that timid.

Yoona raised a brow, a smirk growing on her lips. “Oh, aren’t you just so funny? You’re lucky I have a dead arm. I’d tackle you to the bed if I could.”

Things didn’t change for either of them and you couldn’t imagine how relieved they were of that. Yuri grabbed a simple shirt – one of her favourites she’d wear sometimes – and walked over to Yoona.

“I have to change you.”

“I don’t think I will ever refuse that.”

Yoona straightened and stood up, looking straight at her blushing girlfriend. She watched as Yuri reached her delicate hands towards the buttons along Yoona’s shirt. The process of ing was dangerously slow, Yuri’s excuse being that she didn’t want to knock into Yoona’s arm.

Every so often, the older girl’s finger tips would graze against Yoona’s toned skin, the younger not minding at all besides the shivers she’d get every time it happened.

Yuri pushed the shirt off Yoona’s uninjured shoulder and carefully slipped it off the operated arm, slowly not to hurt her.

And Yuri didn’t know what happened but she was suddenly incapable of dressing Yoona up with another shirt. She’d rather stay home and cuddle up to a shirtless Yoona that go out for dinner.

She couldn’t ditch her friends though.

Her arms weren’t moving but her eyes roamed along her girlfriend’s muscles. She’d seen Yoona’s body so many times but for some reason, this time was different. She’d been deprived of the younger’s skin for quite a while. She just couldn’t help but-

Her hand was already on Yoona’s toned stomach, feeling her muscles tense at the touch.

“You just can’t keep your hands off me, can you?”

Yoona wasn’t even trying to stop her. Who would? If her girlfriend wanted to touch her, so be it. She could waste two hours doing that. Maybe even the whole day. Maybe even her whole life.

All Yoona knew was that she didn’t want Yuri to stop.

“You got a lot more…toned…”

“From all the walking, probably. That’s a good thing, right?”

“The best.”

And then there was an odd pause. It wasn’t like they didn’t have anything to say because they had everything to say. But it was more of a silence that needed to happen.

It was those times that just occurred because of how thick the atmosphere was. If the silent moment never happened, they’d be annoyed about it the rest of the day.

Yuri’s arms slipped around Yoona’s waist in just a split second before her face nuzzled into the younger’s neck. The silence built up to something bigger.

Yoona didn’t have words to say and she was glad. All she did was wrap her uninjured arm around her lover in hopes of making Yuri’s heart flutter almost as much as Yuri made hers. Just the feeling of being this close to Yuri made her nauseous.

She’d completely forgotten she didn’t have a shirt on.

“I missed you…” Sweet and gentle was her voice.

“I missed you too…” Soft and strong was Yoona’s.

They could’ve stayed like that forever, engulfed in each other’s warmth. Because right then, everything was complete.

***

The burgers were no let down. Sooyoung knew a good burger when she tasted one. There weren’t much people at the joint either but nobody really had burgers for dinner anyways so the employees were all wide eyed when a bunch of teens walked into their restaurant.

“Table for nine?” Taeyeon said it so casually like nine girls turning up at a burger joint was the most normal thing. To them, anyway.

They talked all night about anything that came to their heads. It was far from bonding 101. Their laughs bounced off the walls of the restaurant and they knew they weren’t supposed to stay past closing hours but the employees didn’t seem to mind.

“I think the kids at school are starting to lighten up on your relationship. Nobody really talks about it anymore. And every time they do, Taec’s always around to stop them.” Hyoyeon said, a mouthful of fries.

Yoona and Yuri smiled. The former had finally gotten to lighten up around Taecyeon, knowing he basically saved Yuri’s life. Besides, he made a great punching bag for the young deer.

“Maybe because they feel sorry for them. You guys haven’t been to school in weeks. Have you even studied for finals?” Jessica quirked a brow.

They haven’t. They’ve been too busy worrying about each other to care much about school which was saying a lot for Yuri.

Neither of them even thought about it that much. It was their last year and they probably should’ve taken it more seriously but after everything that happened, school was the last thing on their minds.

Yuri’s father went to prison and Yoona can’t feel her shoulder and people expect them to be worrying about school? Yeah, right.

“You’re asking me? I don’t study unless I’m forced.” Yoona stated before taking a bite of her burger. “Besides, I think I have the basics down. I just need to revise.”

“I can help you.” Yuri offered.

“You’re the sweetest.”

The weirdest part of the night was probably the fact that Seohyun ate the most burgers out of all of them. Surprisingly, more than Sooyoung.

Sunny thought they’d be in competition for the biggest shikshin but really, could anyone beat Sooyoung at eating?

Sooyoung patted the younger girl on the back, a large smile on her face. “You learn from the best, Seo. I’m seo proud of you.”

Groans emitted around the table.

“Enough.” Tiffany chucked a chip at her, barely missing her eye. She wasn’t not trying to hit her…

By the time they’d all finished eating, none of them had to energy to move. They were wondering if they were starting to piss off the employees but it seemed like there was only two left in the restaurant.

They didn’t look very mad.

Yoona leaned over, her lips barely touching Yuri’s earlobe. “Come outside with me.”

The stars that twinkled in the sky were brighter than usual and so was the nice breeze that passed through both of them. Cars would drive by every ten minutes or so and people would walk past, not even batting an eye at the two.

Yuri snuggled into one of Yoona’s jumpers she’d snagged before leaving the house while Yoona watched her, smiling.

“You’re supposed to be looking at the stars. Not me.”

“Who says? You’re a much better view.”

It wasn’t dark enough to hide Yuri’s blush and for some reason, that pleased the younger girl. She wrapped an arm around Yuri and pulled her close, kissing the top of her head.

“We’ve been dating for a pretty long time and I still have the power to make you blush. How great is that?”

“Not very.”

They were engulfed in silence, Yoona obeying and staring at the stars instead. It was like they twinkled just for them, the serene atmosphere going through their heads.

“I wanted to ask you something.”

“What’s that?”

Yuri turned to face the younger girl, her eyes disguised as the stars in the sky. They were the truest ones she’d ever seen.

“What’s love to you?”

“Me?” She didn’t really expect the question to bounce back to her and she’d never really thought about it. Maybe it was because she was too busy figuring out everyone else’s definition to really think about her own.

“Yeah. You asked me and now I want to ask you.”

Yoona’s eyebrows scrunched together in thought. The arm around Yuri’s shoulder had tightened, mindlessly pulling Yuri into her chest.

She stared at her. Yuri. She was paying full attention, waiting for her girlfriend’s answer. Inches apart were their lips and the only thing that was going through Yoona’s head was-

“You.”

Yuri looked confused now. “What?”

“You. You are love.”

The older tried to hold back a laugh. “That doesn’t make any sense, Yoong.”

Yoona’s lips curved into a smile, her heart beating faster than ever. She ran her hands through her hair and stared down at her and Yuri’s feet.

“Exactly. Love doesn’t make sense. It makes you do stupid things for completely no reason. I fell in love with love. I fell in love with you. I guess that’s just how life wanted it, right?”

Yuri gulped before a knowing smirk crossed her lips. “You…are such a dork.”

“Did you really have to ruin the moment? I was trying to be deep.”

“You’re being disgusting. So I’m your definition of love?”

Yoona smiled. “Yes. You will always be my definition of love, baby.”

Yuri shook her head in disbelief. She knew she was dating a cheesy fool but she didn’t know Yoona would be this cheesy. It almost made Yuri want to vomit. But she’d never want Yoona to stop making her heart flutter.

“I’m so glad you chose me.”

“You know I’m always going to choose you. You’re yurisistab-”

Yoona didn’t have time to finish her pun before Yuri had hit her on the head.

Of course, she made up for it with kisses in the end.

***

Right. Left. Right. Left.

The nimble athlete dodged each one of the opposing team's players before booting the ball past the goal posts. Everyone watched as it hit the net behind the goalie, almost faster than the speed of light.

"GOAAAALLL! The true champions of 3 years have won another game! Unbeatable, unstoppable winning by 8 scores! True legends!

The cheering of the crowd was enough to make Im Yoona deaf for a year. Her insides churned and the sweat dripping down her face was proof of how hard she’d worked to get where she was. She was alive and free and strong and winning.

There were millions screaming her name, screaming her team. ‘Im Yoona’ was screwed into everyone’s heads and her name would be remembered until the day she died.

The nation’s greatest soccer player, facing her fears to become what she wanted to be best. But this wasn’t what meant most to her.

The fans, her beautiful yoonaddicts chanting her name and showing off their designed signs yelling ‘I love you’ and ‘please marry me’ were great. She loved them. She loved her popularity.

But this was only part of who Yoona was. There was more to it. There was always more.

"Jeez, you really know how to please the crowd.” Out of nowhere, Sooyoung came with a tight embrace against Yoona’s body. They both smelt of hard work and pride.

How attractive.

And then, as if she wouldn’t have known, Yoona and Sooyoung were crushed into hugs by none other than their supportive best friends. Arms tight around their bodies with cheers and yelling right up against their ear.

They loved it.

"Our famous soccer players! You both did so well!”

“Three years and counting!”

“We’re all so proud of you!”

She loved this too. Praise was a good thing to have every now and again.

“Can I have her now?”

And then there’s her.

“You’re being so greedy, Kwon. Here. Have her.” They pushed Yoona towards the older girl before crowding around Sooyoung, asking her a bunch of questions like they always did, Jessica still clinging onto the tallest girl’s waist.

Yoona approached the smirking vixen in front of her. As beautiful as ever.

Yuri spoke. “Do you know how y you look right now?”

“I was about to ask you the same thing.” Yoona pulled her in by the waist, foreheads touching.

“Ugh. You’re sticky.”

“My team just won a trophy and you’re thinking about how sticky I am? Get dirty.”

Yuri chuckled before grabbing Yoona by the collar and crashing their lips together. Wolf whistles were heard behind them by their annoying friends but they didn’t mind.

They didn’t mind at all.

Yuri. Yuri was most important to Im Yoona. Yuri was Yoona’s beautiful trophy and she was most proud of winning her heart.

Yoona refuses to lose Yuri.

Thank god she fell off that tree.

You're a wonderful writer. I _really_ enjoyed reading this piece of fiction. I especially love the portrayal of Yoona in this story. Close enough to reality but different enough to make it fictitious.

Perfect icing to the cake is the fact that your stories are complete and you don't leave us underlings flapping in the breeze, yearning to be rescued from cliffs (and whatnot).

Thank you and keep it up!
