Chapter 13

Refuse To Lose

“Tell us everything! We must know!”

“Are you guys finally dating now?”

“What did you tell her? Did you stay over her house?”

“Did you cry? I bet you cried.”

Yoona sighed as her friends bombarded her with questions. She had just walked past the school entrance and she was already drowning in their curiosity. She didn’t really think it was that important to them until now.

She leaned against the lockers with a smug look, her hands in her pockets and all.

“I’d tell you but…the attention I’m getting from you guys is very entertaining.”

Tiffany scowled. “For the past few days, you’ve been the saddest creature on Earth. What the hell happened last night?”

“They probably didn’t even make up.” Sooyoung smirked as her friend sent a glare.

Jessica was getting tired of asking questions but not receiving any answers. She harshly grabbed Yoona by the ear. A little too aggressive, but it was expected.

“Im Yoona, you have until the count of 3 before I tear your ear off.”

“Owowow! Okay! I’ll tell you!” The youngest winced in pain as her ear was released. She gently rubbed it, trying to sooth the throbbing ache. “I went over to her house and said what I needed to say. The next thing I know, we’re kissing. It was that simple.”

Sooyoung grabbed her by the collar, squinting her eyes at the younger. “Did you do it?”

“Dude, she’d probably feel uncomfortable if I forced myself onto her like that…”

Yoona ripped her friend’s hands off her shirt, trying to unwrinkle it.

“I’m very disappointed…”

“What happened afterwards?” Taeyeon had enquired. “You made up but did you ask her to be your girlfriend?”

Yoona smiled at the thought. Before leaving, she’d realised she hadn’t asked. And Yuri was saying nothing about it, so maybe she’d assumed they were dating. But Yoona needed to be sure.

+++

It was 1AM and the only light source coming through the room was the moon, glistening on the two bodies that laid on the bed. The silence was deafening but Yuri’s calm breathing succeeded in soothing Yoona’s heart.

She was still awake. Her eyes wide open as her hands were intertwined between the pillow and her head. She couldn’t sleep. She wasn’t supposed to. Her plan was to just wait until Yuri fell asleep and then get back home. But one look at the angel beside her, Yoona couldn’t seem to leave.

It was like the older girl’s aura was stopping her from leaving. Like a force field. And all she’d want to do is hold her and keep her close.

But she wasn’t holding her. They weren’t even sleeping very close to each other.

Yuri faced her as her body raised and fell at each breath, the blanket only covering her lower half. Yoona grabbed it to pull it up to her chin, keeping her warm from the breeze coming through the window. Asleep, Yuri snuggled into the fabric, almost smiling.

Yoona grinned and looked back up to the ceiling, contemplating. This must’ve been a dream. Here she was, sleeping next to her crush giving off the beautiful scent of vanilla. Yoona was so astounded, she pinched herself just to be certain.

It was a shame she’d never got to see Yuri’s father though. The older girl didn’t even talk to him much except to make him dinner. Which was weird because instead of eating with him, Yuri had come back to the room with two bowls, ready to eat with Yoona. She’d thought Yuri would be more family-oriented.

She’s full of many surprises.

Yoona sat up and checked the time on her phone.

1:43AM

She’d stayed long enough.

Throwing her legs over the edge of the bed, she rubbed her face to rid her exhaustion. It had been a long day. She grabbed the bag of her wet clothes beside the bed and as soon as she stood, a soft hand had reached out to grab the hem of her shirt.

Startled, Yoona turned around like a deer caught in headlights, being met with a sleepy Yuri as she lazily rubbed her eyes with her hand.

Too cute.

Yoona turned around with the goofiest smile. “Hey. Did I wake you?”

In response, Yuri shook her head. “Where are you going?” Her voice was hoarse. And Yoona had to stop herself from pouncing on the girl there and then. She was unbelievably y.

“I have to go. I didn’t tell my parents where I am.”

Yuri looked disappointed, but she couldn’t let the girl stay forever. Even if she wanted to. She sat up on the bed, looking at Yoona as Yoona looked at her.

They just stayed there, admiring each other. It was the sweetest thing.

“Did you get enough sleep?” Yuri asked, a little worried.

“Uhh, I couldn’t.”

“What? Why not?”

“Well…” Yoona scratched the back of her head. “…I have this thing where I can’t sleep unless I’m…y’know…”

“Drunk?”

“No! uhm….”

“…O-oh.”

“Yeah. I just feel more comfortable that way…” She didn’t know why the hell she was telling Yuri this. She felt that if she did, Yuri would either find her really weird, or she’d find the habit endearing.

Having been knowing her for quite some time, Yoona hoped it was the latter.

And she wasn’t wrong, because after Yuri gave a slow, understanding nod, she felt quite relieved.

“I wasn’t dreaming, right?”

Yoona tilted her head with a smile. “Dreaming about what?”

“We kissed…right? That actually happened?”

And the younger girl honestly couldn’t help but chuckle. “Yeah. That actually happened.”

Slowly nodding, Yuri’s eyes had finally left Yoona’s. She turned around to grab something from her bedside table and carefully handed it to the younger girl. “It’s still drizzling. I don’t want you getting soaked again.”

“I’ll be fine.”

“Just take the umbrella.”

And she did. Not before snickering at Yuri’s sharp remark. Their fingers brushed and their hearts swooned.

Yoona was supposed to have left by now. It was already 2AM. But there was still something she needed to ask. She still wasn’t certain of what they were to each other. What were they now?

“Tell me what you’re thinking about.” Her voice was like soft music to Yoona’s ears. She could tell there was something on the younger girl’s mind.

“Us.”

“What about us?”

Yoona climbed onto the bed to sit beside Yuri, facing her. Her legs were crossed as she played with the loose thread coming from the blanket.

“What are we now?”

Yuri grinned. “You still haven’t asked me.”

“Oh I’m supposed to ask?” And that earned Yoona a playful hit to the arm, causing them both to giggle.

Yuri needed to know. If Yoona was brave enough to ask, if Yoona could do it, it’d tell the older girl that she was clear with her feelings. That Yoona wants this to happen.

But if she couldn’t, it’d mean Yoona was still uncertain about them. It’d mean Yoona was still scared to believe her emotions were real, and it’d mean there was a possible chance that the younger girl didn’t even like her.

All these thoughts were enough to make Yuri doubt everything. Everything that had happened. And she just hoped to whoever was up there, that these feelings Yoona had wouldn’t hurt her.

Reaching out, Yoona grabbed a hold of both of Yuri’s hands, giving them a tight squeeze as she gave a charming smile to the tanned angel in front of her.

“Will you be my girlfriend, Kwon Yuri?” It was that simple.

“Depends…” And that word instantly wiped off the smile on Yoona’s face. “…Do you like me the way I like you?”

“Well, do you always get the urge to kiss me and hold my hand and tell me how irresistibly hot I am?”

Yuri smiled. “Yes.”

“Then yes.”

“Then yes.” And they laughed. Quiet so Yuri’s dad couldn’t hear.

“Can I call you my girlfriend now? And vice versa?”

“You may.”

“Awesome.” Yoona planted soft kisses on both of her new girlfriend’s palms, spotting the bruises on Yuri’s wrists.

She stopped. She stared. And then she looked at Yuri with a frown.

What the hell is that?

“What’s wrong?”

Yoona didn’t know if she should ask. If Yuri hadn’t brought it up, it mustn’t be that important, right? Or maybe it was, but the topic was too sensitive to talk about. Yoona needed to respect Yuri. She needed to trust her.

“Nothing.” She replied with a smile.

Letting go, Yoona sat on the edge of the bed again, putting on her shoes and making sure to double-knot them. She stood and was about to make her way to the window when Yuri stopped her once again.

“Yoong…”

She turned around faster than the speed of light. “Yes, my girlfriend?”

Yuri had this shy look, as if she was nervous to say the next words. “Do you…want that goodbye kiss now?”

And Yoona was back on the bed, her lips on Yuri’s. No matter how many times they kissed, it always felt different with each one. Maybe it was the fact that Yuri’s lips always tasted different, or maybe it was just the fact that she was kissing Yuri.

But even if they peck 100 times a day, it still wouldn’t be enough for Yoona.

She climbed out the window with Yuri close behind. Before the older girl could close it, Yoona turned with another charming smile, waving a goodbye. And Yuri sent the exact same thing.

Driving through the streets, Yoona silently played with the ring on her finger. Thinking of no one but her girlfriend.

+++

Hyoyeon drummed her fingers along the dance floor, exhausted from their dance rehearsal. She sat in a circle with her friends. Seohyun and Sunny had a free period and came by to watch the girls practise their dances, and since they’ve finished, everyone mingled amongst themselves, waiting for time to pass.

“And then?!” Sunny’s grip on Yuri’s arm was preventing her blood flow. She couldn’t even feel her hand anymore.

“And then she just left. That was it.”

Seohyun couldn’t stop herself from squealing, receiving the weirdest expressions from the other three girls. “S-sorry. It’s just really cute…”

Turning back to Yuri, Sunny grinned. “That’s so beautiful, Yul! She seems to be really into you!”

“Yeah…she came through.” Hyoyeon added in, causing a blushing Yuri. “Did your dad not catch you?”

“Like he would. He barely comes into my room…”

“Would’ve guessed.”

The tanned girl turned to Hyoyeon with a smirk and raised her brow. “Admit it.”

“Admit what?”

“That you were wrong about Yoona.”

“Hey, you guys haven’t even been dating for a day. I’m not admitting anything.”

Saying this didn’t help but make Sunny scowl. “Why do you have to be so stubborn? Can’t you see how perfect they are for each other?”

“Perfect? Yeah. I’m sure.” Really though, in some part of Hyoyeon, she thought they were a little cute.

“Tch. Do you always have to be this rude? We’re Yul’s friends. We’re supposed to be here for her.”

The youngest of the couple couldn’t help but groan. “I was joking. Can’t you take a joke?”

“No. Obviously I’m not as chill as you. Obviously, I take things seriously. You know what else I take seriously, babe?”

“Uggghhhh.”

“Our relationship!” Sunny stood up with a huff.

“Where are you going now?”

“I need a drink. Your stupid self is making my brain heat up.” And with that Sunny had left the room. It was amazing how no one had noticed the argument a few seconds before.

“Uhm…are you guys okay?” Seohyun and Yuri were slightly confused.

“She’s mad cause’ I forgot to cancel our date yesterday.”

“Are you going to talk to her, unnie?”

“Yeah. Once she’s done being a baby.”

Yuri chuckled. “Seems like you need relationship advice.”

“Right but I’m not taking any of yours, Kwon.”

“Why? I have no problems with my girlfriend.”

“Not yet.” Hyoyeon teased, earning a hit from her friend. The former sat, a little guilty for what she did to Sunny. She knew she was the one in the wrong, but the girl didn’t have to shout at her. It scared Hyoyeon sometimes.

The maknae roamed her eyes around the place, listening to the constant chatter and the music playing in the background. Her eyes landed on the ring around Yuri’s finger. It fit her perfectly.

She smiled before thinking.

My ship is sailing.

***

Yuri paced her way to the art building, smiling as she past Yoona’s tree. It still stood strong, and she’d wondered if the young girl still visited the thing. She hoped so. Stopping in front of the art room, Yuri had thought the door was locked but one attempt to turn the knob and it slipped open.

She had the chance to catch a glimpse of Yoona lounging around on one of the tables before she jumped off and acted as if she wasn’t just sleeping, giving another one of her goofy smiles.

“I told you to call before coming in here. How’d you get the door open?”

“It was already unlocked.”

“And what is your purpose of being here?” Yuri removed her jacket and placed her bag down before she took her apron. Every time she put it on, Yoona found her to look so…professional.

“To see you, of course. Is Taecyeon coming?” She tried to sound like she wasn’t annoyed.

“He has training.”

“Good.”

Yoona leaned on the table as her chin rested in her palm. She watched with a smile as Yuri took out her paintbrushes and paint, placing them on the table.

“I only have to paint the roofs. Do you want to help get this thing finally finished?”

Yuri turned her head so quickly, it threw the younger girl off. She stumbled and acted as if she was staring at the ceiling the whole time instead of Yuri’s backside.

“Huh? What? Are you talking to me?” She pretended to scratch her head in confusion.

Yuri gave her the most intimidating glare. She wandered off towards the aprons and took one of it off its hanger. Yuri walked back and hooked it around Yoona’s neck before her arms encircled the younger’s waist to tie up the apron.

“Are you going to start acting like my girlfriend,” She spoke as she secured the knott. “Or are you going to keep pretending I’m your middle school crush?”

She smirked, and so did Yoona.

“Can I act like both?”

“No.” Yuri finished tying and grabbed Yoona’s hand. “Come on.”

She led her to the table and gave her the paintbrush. “You may have the privilege to do all the roofs.”

“Are you only saying that so you don’t have to do any work?”

“Of course not. It’s a privilege, Yoong. Stop being so ungrateful.”

Yoona shook her head and took the paintbrush. “You’re lucky you’re hot.”

She turned and began painting, feeling Yuri press against her left arm as she leaned in to see how accurate the younger was. She was breathing directly on Yoona’s neck, her hand playing with the tips of Yoona’s messy ponytail.

She was too entranced to realise how worked up Yoona was getting. The latter needed her hand to be somewhere else.

A few moments of thinking passed before Yoona decided on her plan. “Hey, Yul.”

“Hm?”

“Can you scratch my palm? It’s itchy.”

“Your palm? Your palm is itchy. Your palm.”

“Yes. The palm of my hand.”

“Out of all the places on your body that could have an itch, it’s your palm.” Yuri folded her arms as she raised a brow.

“I’m sorry Doctor Kwon but I didn’t know it was impossible for the palm of my hand to want to be scratched. Please. Enlighten me with more unnecessary comments on my poor knowledge of itchy body parts.”

“Oh shut up.” She harshly grabbed Yoona’s left hand, trying to suppress a smile as her girlfriend chuckled.

She quietly did as she was told, occasionally looking up to see how the painting was going. Unbelievably, it was better than Yuri had expected. The last time she got Yoona to paint, it was done so horribly, the former had to repaint it herself.

She was glad she didn’t have to go through the trouble again.

“You missed this spot.”

“Which one?”

“This one.”

“This one?” Yoona turned her head and quickly dotted Yuri’s nose with the paint, causing the older to shriek. She was going to stop her ministrations to Yoona’s hand and pull away, but the latter only grabbed her hand and pulled her closer.

Yoona couldn’t stop laughing.

“Why would you do that?!”

“You still look cute, don’t worry.” Yoona was still snickering as she covered up the actual spot Yuri was talking about.

“You’re lucky I don’t have a brush, .”

“Which is a good thing why I did it.”

Yuri huffed and said nothing more. They both only stood in silence and held each other’s hands. A few moments later and Yoona had finally finished painting the last bit of roofs. She jokingly wiped her forehead and turned to Yuri.

“Done.”

The older girl took a look and smiled at the work. She was happy with the outcome and pleased with how much work they all put into it.

“Do you think Taecyeon’s going to like it?”

“Who cares? You might as well cross out his name. I did more work than him and I don’t even do art.”

Yuri sighed. “I wish you’d stop dissing him like that.”

“Why should I? He does it too.”

Yuri let go of Yoona’s hand and placed them on the younger’s cheek. “Then be the bigger person.” She patted them before walking off to cover the finished model.

“It’s not nice to call a girl fat, Yuri. You could seriously bring down my self-esteem.”

“Good. You’re way too cocky to handle.” She smirked and grabbed her jacket and bag. “Thank you for finishing the project, by the way.”

“I’m great, aren’t I? I deserve a reward.”

“You deserve a kick in the .” Yuri grabbed Yoona’s hand and pulled her out of the building, not missing the pout on the younger girl’s lips.

“Where are we going?”

“To your tree.”

“My tree? Why?”

“I miss it. We have 5 more minutes anyways.”

They placed their bags down beside the trunk as Yuri ran her hands along the bark. She passed the tree every day but never had the chance to really stay around it.

“You like my tree now?” Yoona asked, watching from afar.

“Yeah.”

“This makes me a little jealous.”

“You jealous of the tree or me?” Yuri asked with a smirk before hiding behind the said plant.

“Im jealous…” Yoona paced around and grabbed Yuri before she could get away, one arm wrapping around her waist to pull their bodies close. “…of the stupid tree.”

Yuri giggled. “But this tree has never touched these lips. You’re the only tree that has.”

“Stop calling me fat. I am so offended. Do you know how sensitive I am?”

“Ugh.” Yuri rolled her eyes at her girlfriend before finally pulling her in, their lips touching as Yoona smiled into the kiss.

The bell went off right after.

***

Yoona continued kicking dirt as she waited by her car. Since there were too many people that parked in that old parking lot, she had to resort in using the back streets of the school, finding it eerily quiet and foggy. Barely anyone drove on it and she wondered if people even lived in the houses.

As each second passed, Yoona was starting to get goosebumps just standing there. She was going to head back into the car to be safe until she heard her girlfriend’s voice.

From afar, she could see her waving her arm as she strode towards the girl. Yoona was smiling from ear to ear, that was until she saw the figure behind Yuri. Her eyes widened and her hands were shaking.

“YUL THERE’S A GHOST BEHIND YOU!”

Yoona only earned a ‘what the hell?’ expression from the tanned girl. Groaning, she ran towards her, grabbing the back of Yuri’s head and pushing it into the younger’s shoulder.

“I’LL PROTECT YOU. STAY BACK, DEMON!”

Yuri pushed her face out of Yoona’s shoulder. “Yoona, what the hell?!”

“IT’S GETTING CLOSER. WE HAVE TO GO!”

Yoona grabbed a hold of Yuri’s hand and was about to make a run for it, but the latter pulled her back, crashing their bodies together.

“Yoona, it’s not a freaking ghost! It’s Hyoyeon!”

Appearing out of the fog was the said girl. Her hands were on her stomach as she bent over laughing. You can’t blame her. It was just too hilarious.

“H-Hyoyeon?”

She wiped a tear and looked at Yoona. “And this is the girl my best friend’s dating.”

“Hyo.”

“What? I’m just teasing. That was funny though. You have to admit.”

“C’mon.” She grabbed both their hands and dragged them to the car, stopping at the passenger seat. Yoona was completely confused.

“Wait, is she coming with us?”

“Yes. We’re getting smoothies, right? She wants to see Sunny.”

“Well why didn’t she just go with Sun-oof!” Yuri wacked her girlfriend in the stomach, getting impatient.

“You can’t be rude to my friends. Open the door.”

Hyoyeon snickered at how whipped Yoona was, watching as she obeyed Yuri. She wouldn’t admit it, but it was quite cute.

During the drive, the dancing machine had barely contributed to the conversation. She only sat, listening in.

“Drive thru’s are important, okay?”

“How so?”

“If you’re in a hurry? Do you think you want to get out of your car and order inside? No way! You go through that drive thru and you order it to go!”

“If there was a drive thru for SM Juice Bar, more people would be going through there instead of going inside. Besides, the interior’s beautiful.” Yuri argued.

“You know what else is beautiful (besides you)? Not being late for work or school. Drive thru’s are one of the best things to ever be created. Admit it.”

“Never.”

And the conversation went on until they made it to the juice bar. It was the worst 10 minutes of Hyoyeon’s life.

They got out and the shortest of the three immediately strode behind the counter, meeting up with Sunny.

Yuri and Yoona found a booth and being the chivalrous girl that she was, Yoona let her girlfriend slide in first before plopping herself down right beside her. Yuri squinted her eyes in confusion. She’d expected the younger to sit on the opposite seat, as far away from Yuri as possible.

But here she was, their shoulders and thighs pressed against each other.

She still hadn’t found out why Yoona really ignored her in public. And she needed to know. But this was their first day being together. It wasn’t the right time for her to bring up the topic.

It was a question for another day.

The waiter had arrived, taking their orders before he headed off again. There was loud chatter all around them but for some reason, it felt so peaceful. The place had this ‘homey’ kind of feeling, like you could make friends with anyone in there and have the longest conversation with them.

It was nice. It was different. And Yuri liked different.

“Did you like our first day being officially together?”

Yuri scoffed. “That’s a silly question.”

“It’d be silly if you didn’t answer.”

“Of course I liked it. Loved it even.”

“Oh my goodness!” Yoona clutched at her chest. “Please, my heart is about to jump out of my chest. Insult me so it’ll calm down!”

Yuri snickered. “Drive thru’s are horrible things and I hate how you support them.”

“Ah-It stopped.”

Yuri broke out into laughter as well as Yoona. She playfully hit her girlfriend on the shoulder, earning a charming smile.

“Equality for all drive thru’s, Yul. They have rights too!”

“Hell no. They’re the worst. I support everything except them. And you can’t make me change my mind about that, Im Yoona.”

“You underestimate me…” Yoona wandered her fingers along the skin of Yuri’s arm, making her jump.

“Yah, that tickles.”

“What? I just wanted to hold your hand…”

“You don’t have to do that to hold my hand.” Yuri grabbed it herself, making Yoona grin. She played with Yuri’s ring as Yuri played with hers, twirling it around each other’s fingers.

Yoona’s eyes had roamed down to her tanned beauty’s wrist, spotting those bruises again. Her mind would occasionally linger to the sight of them, making Yoona frown. She’d wanted to ask since she left Yuri’s house, but she was afraid it was a sensitive topic. She was afraid she’d push Yuri away and scare her. And they’d only just started dating.

It was a question for another day.

She looked back at Yuri’s ring. “I think I deserve that Mickey Mouse ring.”

“You deserve absolutely nothing.”

***

Hyoyeon stood in front of Sunny with a frown. The latter only ignored, trying to pay attention to her smoothie-making. She didn’t like the fact that Sunny gave more attention to a damn blender than her own girlfriend.

“Babe…”

“Go away.”

“Babe.”

“I don’t want to talk to you.”

Hyoyeon stood between Sunny and the machine. “Babe.”

“Ughhh. What the hell do you want?”

Hyoyeon pouted. “I miss you.”

“Did you miss me when you forgot to cancel our date? Did you miss me when you stood me up?”

This was harder than she’d thought. Sunny usually couldn’t resist her girlfriend’s charms. Hyoyeon’s pout only got even cuter.

“How many times do I have to say sorry? I love you, right?”

“If you did, you wouldn’t have forgotten our date.”

“I’ve been busy. You know that. The dance battle is coming up and I have to get the choreography done. I need to get someone to make the costumes and I’m just so stressed.”

“I know, but…” Sunny sighed. “…I don’t want you to forget that you have a girlfriend.”

“I’d never. If I forget about you, I’d forget I was alive.”

Hyoyeon extended her arms out, hoping for a hug. She didn’t like making Sunny mad. It was the worst thing she could ever do.

And Sunny knew that. She’d even sometimes pretend just to tease Hyoyeon, and with enough perseverance, it would eventually work. But she wasn’t in the mood for teasing today, and she needed to get back to work.

To do that? Forgive her girlfriend. Sunny rolled her eyes before being engulfed by Hyoyeon’s arms, smiling as the younger swayed her gently.

“I love you.”

“I hate you.”

Hyoyeon smiled and her hug only tightened.

You're a wonderful writer. I _really_ enjoyed reading this piece of fiction. I especially love the portrayal of Yoona in this story. Close enough to reality but different enough to make it fictitious.

Perfect icing to the cake is the fact that your stories are complete and you don't leave us underlings flapping in the breeze, yearning to be rescued from cliffs (and whatnot).

Thank you and keep it up!
