The Return of Supernamu and Supergyu

(Words: 2,529)

It was yet another normal day, or so Sunggyu had thought. He had woken up bright and early for work and his loving husband had cooked up a nice hearty breakfast. (Now that he thought back, breakfast was definitely more extravagant than usual. His sleepy mind had not had time to process the fact that early in the morning.)

Woohyun drove him to work, as per usual, but just as he had closed the passenger side’s car door and was about to enter through the school gates, Woohyun rolled down the window and shouted out at him, stopping Sunggyu in his tracks.

“Myungsoo and Sungjong are leaving Jaehan with us tonight, by the way!” Sunggyu turned around with narrowed eyes.

“Why are they leaving their son with us? And more importantly, why did you agree to this? Why didn’t you ask me before—“ Woohyun cut Sunggyu off before he could continue his nagging.

“I just wanted to do them a favour! They haven’t really had time for a couple’s night out after they got Jaehan.” Woohyun grinned as Sunggyu’s face soured more and more. “They’re picking him up tomorrow morning. Okay bye, honey, I’ll be here to pick you up at 4!” Woohyun took the chance to step on the gas and speed away before Sunggyu could physically wrangle him. Oh, tonight was going to be good.

The thing is, Woohyun might have an ulterior motive for agreeing to babysit Jaehan for the night. Sunggyu and Woohyun had been married for almost 3 years now, and he really, really wanted a kid of their own. Sunggyu, on the other hand, hadn’t vehemently denied the idea, but rather avoided the topic entirely whenever Woohyun brought it up. So he wanted to use cute, completely adorable, 4-year old Jaehan as an example of how happy they could be with a kid, and hopefully get Sunggyu to at least agree on visiting the orphanage soon.

----

It was now about 4:30, half an hour before Myungsoo and Sungjong were going to drop off Jaehan at their house. Woohyun had just picked up Sunggyu from school and they had gone to the supermarket for groceries for tonight. As soon as Sunggyu entered their house, he made a beeline for the couch and flopped unceremoniously onto it. He had had a rough day at school, because the troublemaker in his class was exceptionally disruptive on this particular day. Sunggyu felt like it was a bad omen for what was to come tonight.

Woohyun came up behind Sunggyu and started massaging his shoulders and Sunggyu hummed appreciatively.

          “Rough day?”

“Yeah,” Sunggyu murmured, “And it’s probably going to get rougher…”

“Oh relax, you know Jaehan’s a sweet kid.” Woohyun said with a grin.

“Uh, no he’s not. Maybe to you, but not to me.”

Woohyun simply chuckled in response and went to go make Sunggyu a cup of tea. When he came back, Sunggyu was dozing off on the couch, and Woohyun set the cup of hot tea down on the coffee table before settling down beside Sunggyu, wrapping an arm around his husband’s waist and cuddling into his side.

“Wake up Gyu, Jaehan’s going to be here soon.”

“Then I should probably escape to the bedroom then…” Sunggyu lethargically trailed off before trying to get up. However, the arm wrapped tightly around his waist stopped him.

“Woohyun, let me go…” Sunggyu tried to pry off Woohyun’s arm but was interrupted by the sound of the doorbell.

“Jaehan’s here!” Woohyun exclaimed happily as he pulled Sunggyu onto his feet and literally dragged him towards the door. He gave him a light tap on the while muttering “Be nice.” before opening the door with a wide smile.

“Woohyun-hyung!” Sunggyu cringed a little at the kid’s high pitched voice, but tried his best to hide it. He turned to see Jaehan practically clinging to Woohyun.

“Thanks for watching over Jaehan for us tonight, hyung.” Sunggyu tried his best to muster up a smile before replying to Sungjong.

“It’s no problem. I know you guys haven’t been out together alone for a while.”

“His bedtime is at 9, and here are his clothes and other things.” Myungsoo handed the big heavy backpack to Sunggyu since Woohyun was rather preoccupied, “Other than that there isn’t really anything.”

“Bye daddies!” Jaehan gave both Sungjong and Myungsoo kisses and waved excitedly as they made their way back to their car. Sunggyu would be lying if he said he didn’t feel the slightest bit of jealousy. He closed the door and watched as Woohyun and Jaehan skipped happily towards the living room, hand in hand. After dropping off Jaehan’s backpack onto the couch, Sunggyu tried to escape to the bedroom and away from the kid but was stopped by the one thing he was trying to escape from.

“Sunggyu-ahjusshi, where are you going? You’re not going to play with us?” Jaehan asked with a pout and puppy eyes. Sunggyu could see Woohyun holding in a laugh and he gave him a glare.

“Yeah Sunggyu-ahjusshi, come play with us.” If looks could kill, Woohyun would totally be dead ten times over by now. But Sunggyu had a soft heart and really couldn’t say no to Jaehan when he was giving him those sad, sad eyes. (So maybe he didn’t hate kids as much as he said he did.)

“Fine.” He relented and sat down as Jaehan took out his dinosaur figurines from his backpack.

----

However, it was the most awkward experience ever for Sunggyu, because although Jaehan had acted before like he wanted to play with Sunggyu, now he was acting like the opposite. Heck, his back was practically turned to Sunggyu as he made his T-Rex attack Woohyun’s Triceratops. Sunggyu stared at the Brontosaurus in his hand and sighed before setting it down and getting up. Why did the kid ask him if he was going to play with him, if he was just going to ignore him?

“Hyung, where are you going?” Woohyun looked up from defending his dinosaur against Jaehan’s with a concerned look.

“Going to make dinner…” Sunggyu mumbled as he made his way into the kitchen. Even though Woohyun was the one that usually cooked, Sunggyu had decided earlier that it would probably be better if he cooked tonight, especially since Woohyun was more… skilled in playing with children anyway.

Sunggyu was going to make something totally kid friendly: spaghetti and meatballs. It was also something that was pretty easy to make, so Sunggyu was confident it wouldn’t turn out tasting horrible. Besides, he had picked up a few tips and tricks from Woohyun from all the years they spent together.

----

Meanwhile, Woohyun was still playing dinosaurs with Jaehan, but he got a little worried. Tonight was supposed to make Sunggyu realize how wonderful having a child would be, but his plan seemed to be backfiring. And so he turned to Jaehan and asked (hopefully Sunggyu was out of earshot),

“Jaehan,” the boy looked up with wide (and cute) eyes at his name being called, “do you… dislike Sunggyu-hyung or something?”

The way Jaehan violently shook his head in response made Woohyun laugh.

“Really? Because it really seems like you avoid him, Jaehan-ah.”

“Woohyun-hyung, can I tell you a secret?” Jaehan leaned close to Woohyun’s ear after the other nodded.

“Sunggyu-hyung is super cool but I’m scared that he’ll think that I’m not cool enough for him.” Jaehan whispered.

Well. That was unexpected. Woohyun could barely hold in his laugh. Sunggyu? Cool? In what world? In the end, Woohyun simply grinned and leaned in to whisper a response to Jaehan.

----

Both Jaehan and Woohyun sat quietly at the dinner table while Sunggyu was getting ready to serve his dish, which was weird to Sunggyu because Jaehan was usually a chatty kid (and so was Woohyun, in both aspects).

Sunggyu shook it off, especially when Woohyun generously offered to go get him some orange juice after everyone had settled down with their delicious looking plates of spaghetti in front of them.

“What would you like to drink, Jaehan-ah?” Woohyun questioned while pouring Sunggyu a glass of orange juice.

“Orange juice!” was the simple answer he received. Woohyun chuckled while he poured the kid his own glass of juice, before going to put the carton back into the fridge.

“Let’s eat!” Woohyun had barely sat back down before Sunggyu started digging into his plate. Upon seeing Sunggyu almost viciously devouring his dinner, Jaehan attacked his plate in the same manner. When Sunggyu took a break and took a sip from his glass of orange juice, Jaehan was quick to do the same. Sunggyu gave Woohyun a questioning glance, but the other only shrugged in response and continued eating his dinner (in a civil manner, thank you very much, unlike the other two at the table).

When Sunggyu was done (and he was done quite quickly), he stood up to bring his now empty plates as well as his cutlery to the sink. Soon he heard pattering footsteps behind him and saw Jaehan coming his way with his own plate and cutlery. Sunggyu had to admit it was cute the way the kid tried his best to reach the sink, but in the end had to be helped by Sunggyu anyway. He was annoyed however, when Jaehan ran away to Woohyun without saying a word of thanks and the two children started whispering and giggling to each other. Sunggyu rolled his eyes and stomped towards the living room in order to watch his daily drama. Soon after, Jaehan plopped down onto the couch next to him but didn’t say a word to him.

Wait. Hold up. Was the kid actually sitting in the same pose as Sunggyu? Sunggyu pretended to be annoyed and changed to a different sitting position, watching out of the corner of his eye as Jaehan did the same.

When Woohyun walked by to take his seat on the couch after finishing up his dinner (dishes can be done later), Sunggyu pulled his sleeve and whispered in his husband’s ear,

“Why is the kid copying me?”

          “I think it’s cute.”

          “I think it’s annoying.”

Woohyun could tell, by the slight smile that Sunggyu had on his face the whole time during the episode, that it was probably a lie.

----

At the end of the hour-long episode, Sunggyu looked over to see that Jaehan had his eyes half closed.

“I think it’s bath time for a certain young boy now, isn’t it?” Woohyun piped up as he turned off the TV. Jaehan whined about wanting to play more, but Woohyun simply picked him up to take him to the upstairs bathroom.

“Hyung, can you get his bath stuff from his backpack? Thanks!”

----

“Jaehan, stop splashing.” Woohyun’s only response was a big wave of water hitting him right in the torso. Woohyun only rolled his eyes and took off his shirt because he didn’t like the feeling of wet fabric sticking to his skin.

Sunggyu, from his (safe) spot by the door, had to remind himself that there was a kid in the room.

“Hyung, I want big boy shampoo.” Jaehan stated, as Woohyun was about the squeeze some of Jaehan’s kid shampoo onto his palm. Sunggyu couldn’t help but chuckle.

“Why? Yours smells like strawberry! It smells good and it suits you!”

“I want to smell like hyung.” To Sunggyu’s surprise, Jaehan was pointing at him instead of Woohyun, causing him to raise his eyebrows in question. And so Woohyun got up and went to get Sunggyu’s shampoo, squirting some onto his palm before lathering it into Jaehan’s hair while the 4-year old continued splashing water at him and giggling.

Sunggyu couldn’t help but smile at the sight in front of him.

----

After bath time, Sunggyu watched from the doorway of their guest bedroom as Woohyun tucked Jaehan in the bed.  Suddenly, his husband turned to him with a grin.

          “Sing him a lullaby!”

          “Uh, no, I don’t think—“

“Jaehan, did you know that Sunggyu-hyung has the greatest voice ever? He’s a music teacher at a well-known school!” Jaehan absorbed all this new information with wide eyes, then turned to Sunggyu with the cutest, saddest, puppy eyes he had ever seen.

“… Fine.” Sunggyu couldn’t believe the kid got him to do something without ever saying anything. Or the word please, for that matter.

And so Sunggyu started singing softly a random children’s lullaby he had heard on TV once, and that had Jaehan smiling brightly and listening attentively. Soon, the kid was starting to drift off to sleep, and the last thing he said was, “Sunggyu-ahjusshi has a really nice voice. I want to sing like Sunggyu-ahjusshi one day.”

Sunggyu smiled. So maybe kids could be quite cute when they’re sleeping and not loud and acting obnoxious.

----

It was early next morning when the doorbell rang, signaling that Myungsoo and Sungjong were here to pick up Jaehan. Sunggyu would never admit that the kid had grown on him and he was sad to see him go. He went to open the door, because Woohyun was busy washing the dishes from breakfast.

“Hey you two. How was the movie?”

“Myungsoo almost peed his pants because he was so scared.”

“I did not pee my pants! And I absolutely was not scared!”

“I said almost.” Myungsoo was about retort when the pattering of little feet could be heard.

“DADDIES!” Jaehan jumped excitedly into both of his dads’ arms. “I MISSED YOU!” Woohyun appeared behind Sunggyu with Jaehan’s backpack, handing it to Myungsoo. He helped Jaehan put on his shoes.

“Okay now, say bye to Sunggyu-hyung and Woohyun-hyung!”

“Bye Woohyun-hyung!” Jaehan waved with a grin to Woohyun. Then, he simply turned to stare at Sunggyu with wide eyes for a moment, before jumping in for a hug. Sunggyu awkwardly hugged the boy back after a few seconds of shock.

“Bye Sunggyu-hyung.” The words were muffled by Sunggyu’s shirt but he could still make out what Jaehan said. Did he actually call me hyung for once? “Teach me how to be as awesome as you next time!” Jaehan added quickly before running out to the car. Sunggyu could swear the boy’s cheeks were tinted red. Both Myungsoo and Sungjong chuckled at the shocked Sunggyu.

“Looks like our boy has a role model in his life.”

“Not sure I want him to become like Sunggyu-hyung though.” Sunggyu snapped out of his trance to whack the two on the head.

“Shut up.” The couple laughed before waving goodbye and joining their son at the car.

When Sunggyu closed the door with a sigh (dealing with those two was also super frustrating), he felt arms wrapping around his waist and lips by his ear.

“I know you liked it when Jaehan copied you. I know how narcissistic you are.”

“No, it was annoying.” Sunggyu pushed his husband away and went to flop down on the couch to watch some Saturday morning shows. Woohyun only smiled knowingly and snuggled up beside his husband on the couch.

          “…… Hyun?”

          “Yes, hyung?”

“Can we go to the orphanage tomorrow?”
