chapter 18
apocalypse IISanghyun was sleeping when he heard sweet voice humming a mellow melody. He stood up and approaced the older who was sitting with his back on him. "Byunghee hyung." He called softly and sat beside the older, rubbing his eyes.
Byunghee stopped singing when he heard Sanghyun. "Did I wake you up?"
Sanghyun shook his head. "Don't worry about it. I'm not that sleepy anyway." Sanghyun watched as Byunghee poked around the campfire with a branch in his hand. His eyes fall on the older's face. There were creases of worries on those features. "What's been bothering you, hyung?" Sanghyun's question clearly taken Byunghee off of his guard.
"Am I that obvious?" Byunghee asked and let out a robotic laugh followed by a heavy sigh. A sigh that clearly filled with worries.
Again Sanghyun shook his head and looked up on the nightsky. Funny how the sky can be so different from earth. The stars were scattered around the dark sky making it beautiful while on earth, only death and desperation colouring it. "You know, sharing can lighten our heart." Sanghyun gave Byunghee a meaningful look.
Byunghee sighed and lied down with his back on the ground. "It's Mir." Sanghyun kept quiet as he let Byunghee took his time to speak. "He's still not over Sanghyuk. But he never want to share. I don't like the fact that he keep his feeling bottled up. I want him to trust us. To know that we'll always be here for him."
There was silence as the two let the only sound accompany them were the crackling of the small fire and the sound of crickets. "I think he know, hyung. Of all people, you should realize he trust us. Above all, he trust you the most."
Byunghee smiled. "Maybe." But the older know, those trust Mir had on him still wasn't enough. Even when Mir said he do think of them as family, but Byunghee knew, there was still some distance between them. A wall Mir unconsciously put between them. A side of the boy that they couldn't reach. 'Not yet...' Byunghee thought.
"But... I think I can guess the real problem is." Sanghyun spoke and the two boys' eyes met. There was frown on Sanghyun's features as if what he was going to say next would not be good. "I think Mir just doesn't care about his safety. He already lost his family. He lost Sanghyuk. He had no reason to really keep going. He might not realize it himself. But he act unconsciously. He ran off alone even when he clearly know he was putting himself in danger. Plus, even before Sanghyuk's death, Mir isn't really the type that care for his own life. He would just throw it away. Remember our first meet with him?"
Byunghee's brows knitted as the words sunk. What Sanghyun had said might be right. And that just made him more worried. Mir really need to realize how important to keep living even when it meant living in this kind of world.
"If what I said is true. There's nothing we can do to help him. He need to realize it himself. He need to find his resolve to keep living by himself." Sanghyun added.
Byunghee nodded thoughtfully. "The least we can do is protect him as much as we can for now." Byunghee watched back the nightsky. "You know, you speak few words but when you do, you do sound wise." That made Sanghyun grinned. And both boys were back to watching the stars scattered around the blanket of dark sky in comfortable silence.
