Too Tired To Die - Chapter 7

Too Tired To Die

Tei sat and waited patiently for his father to come.  He watched as one by one, the other children's parents arrived to pick them up.  He glanced at the door and pouted.  His father had never been late to pick him up before.  Maybe his father had forgotten him.

Just as he thought that, he heard a familiar voice call out his name.  "Tei, sorry I'm late."

"Uncle Myungsoo," said Tei when he saw the young man.  "Where's daddy?  Did he forget about me?"

The young man gently ruffled the child's hair.  "How can your daddy forget you?  There's nothing he wouldn't do for you.  He loves you a lot, you know?"

Upon hearing those words from the young man, a smile appeared on the child's face.

The young man smiled, seeing that the child's mood had improved.  "Why don't we got to the park and I'll buy you an ice cream?"

Woohyun sat in the empty classroom with a mountain of books scattered in front of him.  Beside him, Mr Kim sat explaining the mathematical formula used to solve the equation.  Woohyun was silent as he sat and listened while feigning interest.  Truth be told, he could care less about trying to understand the formula.

"Do you understand how we got that?" Sunggyu asked.

Woohyun was startled by the older man's sudden question that he simply nodded.

Mr Kim smiled proudly at his success.  "Shall we go onto the next-" His words came to an abrupt halt.

Woohyun looked at the older man whose face was twisted in pain while he clutched his chest.  He knew something was wrong.  "Mr Kim?"

Woohyun saw the older man gasping for breath while trying to reach into his jacket pocket.  With no time to hesitate, Woohyun reached into the man's pocket and found the bottle of tablets.  He tipped out a small white pill and placed it inside Mr Kim's mouth.  He then dug inside his school bag and found his bottle of water.  He tipped the water down the man's mouth and then waited with nervous anticipation.

Moments later when Mr Kim's breathing finally returned to normal, Woohyun let out a sigh of relief.  "Mr Kim, are you alright?"

The older man looked at him apologetically.  "I'm sorry for startling you like that."

Woohyun shook his head.  "There's no need to apologise.  You had me worried though.  Are you sure you're alright?"

Mr Kim nodded.  "It's my fault," said the older man.  "I didn't realise the time and forgot to take my medication."

Woohyun somehow felt partly to blame.  If the older man had not been helping him study then he would not have missed his medication time.  "What's it for?" Woohyun asked with interest.

There was a moment of silence as Mr Kim contemplated his answer.  "It's an old sickness."

Realising that the older man did not want to tell him, Woohyun did not press the matter further.

"What about yourself?" Mr Kim asked with slight hesitation.  "Besides homework, is there anything else I can help you with?"

Woohyun looked at Mr Kim with a slightly puzzled look, wondering what the older man was hinting at.

"Are you...are you in some kind of trouble with the principal?" the older man asked.

Woohyun recalled that Mr Kim had seen him come out of the principal's office.  He finally got the hint.  "It's all good as long as I do everything he tells me to."

His words only caused more worry for the older man.  "Woohyun..."

"I think we should call it a day," said Woohyun, wanting to avoid the topic.  "Thanks for your help, Mr Kim."

At the end of the lesson, Woohyun thanked Mr Kim before grabbing his bag and heading for the door.  Mr Kim waited until Woohyun before he let out a disappointed sigh.  He figured that the boy was in some kind of trouble and he wanted to help him but it did not seem like Woohyun wanted his help in that matter.

As Woohyun exited the school gates, he noticed a figure waiting for him.  "You didn't have to wait around, you know?"

"Are you really going to do this?" Sungyeol asked.

Woohyun shrugged.  "Why not?"

Sungyeol frowned at his friend.  "You know why."

"Isn't it normal for a failing student to get extra tutoring from a teacher?" Woohyun asked.  "Don't you think I'm playing my role well as a student?"
