Ah, Love

CHAPTER 40

So, what did you call me back here for?

Kris sits on the big chair at the end of the table, Yookyung on one side and Stephanie on the other side across her. Meifen bows after placing down his cup of iced tea and leaves the meeting room. He leans back on his chair, fingers joined together with his elbows resting on the arm rests “You’re going to be the new head of the fashion department

What?” a cold bucket of disbelief gets poured over Yookyung’s head. Did I hear that correctly? She questions herself, Kris presses his lips in a thin line, and his eyes plastered on the folder placed before him on the table, beside it a pen.

Your mother resigned from the position so you’ll be taking over and Stephanie will be placed under you as an intern

The two exchanged looks.

The contract is there, sign it and formal announcements will follow” he blandly says. Yookyung looks at him incredulously questioning herself if her cousin was in his right state of mind to just suddenly call for her back here and say that she was to take over one of the departments; sure, it was honorable and she’s been dreaming of it once or twice but the responsibility scared her. As pleasing as it was to be introduced as Wu Prime’s Head of Fashion Department it was also equally scary.

Was she really ready to take over such a task? To be held responsible for the salaries of the hundreds of people under that department? A lot of questions ran through her mind.

Wait, Kris… are you sure about this? I mean… there’s always… Tao” she trailed off her suggestion. Yes, Tao, he seemed like he was more experienced than she was and he’s worked for Wu Enterprise as the Head of FD for God knows how long and there’s no doubt that he’ll excel if Kris gives him the job.

Stephanie was just quiet in her seat, she was yet to be exposed to the corporate world –well, she’s been exposed actually with all the hands-on lessons and what not but she was never really given a proper job title. She was merely just a student.

Kris turns to his cousin “Transferring Tao here is not as easy as you think, Wu Enterprise is on a steady road, if I take him out and put him here the company he leaves would wobble whereas Wu Prime is still climbingClimbing? Pft. Absurd! Yookyung thinks.

Wu Prime was not climbing, ever since he sat down the company has been bulldozing the business world. How could he just sit in his throne and say that it was still yet to become awesome? But Yookyung knows better than to question, she only knew o much afterall whereas Kris had always his eyes peeled out on every number.

Are you going to accept it or not?” he asks, a hint of impatience in his voice.

She takes a deep breath and takes the folder, opening it up and runs her eyes through the contract “Can’t I think about this? I just flew in this morning and it’s only…” she checks her watch “Lunch time”

Alright, you have until this afternoon” Yookyung face palms at his given deadline, she needed more than a few hours. This decision could change her life and it was not going to be a walk in the park! “I need more than a ing few hours, idiot

Watch your words, Yookyung; we’re not at home

Aggravated, she gets up from her seat, taking the folder and heads for the door “I’ll have this by your desk tonight… I need to talk to someone” she grumbles, exiting the room.

Stephanie finally clears , turning to her brother “Yi Fan, are you really sure about all this?

It was better than sitting in silence; among things that Stephanie hated it was awkward silences with her half-brother. Yes, they still had moments like that. Kris closes his eyes and massages the temples of his head; he smirks to himself as he glances at her “Truthfully?” he pauses “It’s the only decision I’m not so sure of but it’s better than nothing

Stephanie breathes in. Kris gets up from his seat “Stephanie…” he calls making her look up, he gives her a small smile and ruffles her hair “Don’t disappoint me

Seoul

“Where’s Luhan?” Sehun asks as he enters the meeting room and notices the empty seat beside his usual. Kai bursts through the door in a hurry and bumps onto Sehun’s back almost causing him to spill his bubble tea –luckily he didn’t “Geez, slow down Casanova! I had to walk by myself under the blazing son to get this”

Kai mutters an apology and takes his seat; he turns back to Sehun “Don’t you have your secretary to do that?”

The youngest of them scoffs to the side “She’s been making my life a living hell for the past weeks so I had to let her go” he sips on his bubble tea, lips parting from the straw as he chews on a pearl bit “I suspect she was doing it on purpose. Her loss, not mine”

“You could have tried talking to her, you know” Suho states as a matter of fact but Sehun shrugs, saying that he had no time for petty talks. Nevertheless, the meeting starts upon Tao’s arrival –he was last to sit down. “Alright, now that we’re complete –” “No we’re not, Luhan is missing” Sehun interrupts causing Suho to sigh “I sent Luhan to China, so anyway back to –” “Eh? Why?” Sehun interrupts… again. Suho closes his eyes for a brief moment, reminding himself to keep calm as Hana had specifically told him that frowning and getting angry causes wrinkles “He’ll lend Kris a hand because I can’t leave Seoul and other than that there’s a meeting there that is in need of his presence”

Sehun sips on his bubble tea and Suho thanks the heavens that it shut him up somehow, he turns to Ling –who was standing by the door- and asks for a cup of coffee to which she leaves the premises to comply.

“Now, no more interruptions” he turns his face into the most serious one he could manage “I called for you all here because Wu Prime is going to have a new head for their Fashion Department and Stephanie will officially start working aswell”

“What?” Tao snaps his head towards the man sitting in the middle of everyone “A new head of FD?”

It sounded rather funny to his ears; he racked his brain for possible reasons as to why such a thing was currently in occurrence. Did Kris fire her? It could be possible, he knew how much distaste Kris had for the lady and with the recent events that had happened he somehow expected it. It seems to be the only logical reason… “No.” Suho answers “Madame Wu resigned”

A snort of laughter disturbs the sudden silence.

“I’m sorry” Chen sniggers “Did I hear that right? I think I heard you say Madame Wu resigned”

“That’s because you did?” Xiumin tell him, rolling his eyes. Chen scoffs “Suho, I think you forgot to add over her dead body at the end of your sentence”

Ling returns to the premises, setting down Suho’s cup of coffee on his side before she takes her place to the side, remaining quiet as she had earlier.

“Really? Is it that unbelievable that the lady has resigned?” Suho questions and Chanyeol answers by shrugging his shoulders and nodding his head “That was meant as a rhetorical question, Chanyeol” Baekhyun tells his seatmate. Sometimes, he really wonders if the giant doesn’t know what it’s meant by the word or he purposely just does that. Then again… he ing graduated with medals. Baekhyun thinks to himself, as Chanyeol shrugs once more “Eh, a question is a question” he says

Kyungsoo clears his throat in a rather loud manner to catch everyone’s attention, he could hear Sehun make mention of something about cough medicine or something for sore throat but he ignores the side comment. He very much wanted to just get the meeting done and over with “So, what are we to do?”

“Well, company adjustments are going to be made… Tao” he locks eyes with the FD head “Take every advantage and get through every nook and cranny, new managements can mean instability and Kris would appreciate it if we keep Wu Enterprise on top, remember that the chairman disregards which company is bigger, he prefers effectiveness and efficiency”

“Got it…” Tao says with a little salute, leaning back on his chair. Lay reaches for the glass of water and takes a sip before speaking “And what about the one concerning Stephanie, how is that connected?”

“Wu Prime will be hosting a party, an anniversary of some sort so Stephanie will probably be introduced there formally to enter the business world” Suho sips on his coffee. He knew that a party meant a lot of things and two of them were, one: getting their asses on a plane to China and second: going fishing on a lake full of business sharks “It’s a few weeks from now so set that on your schedules”

The co-owners nod their heads.

Luhan.

Ah, China, how I missed you. I took off the straps of the seatbelt and get up from my seat, smiling at the flight attendant who was waiting by the doorway “Welcome to China, Mr. Lu” she bows.

Yes, indeed I missed my homeland.

I fished my phone out of my pocket as I exit the private jet, walking down the steps and eventually reached solid ground. I set my phone back to its general mode allowing calls and messages to go through once again. Late messages began to pop up but I ignore every single one, most of them being from Sehun.

He’s been nagging me to bring him native products and other Chinese whatnots I could find. As if.

Welcome to China, Mr. Lu” the female bows with a smile as she leads me to the inside of the airport. I’m grateful that Suho sent me here, I usually would refuse the work travels but this, I’ll make an exemption of… it’s my hometown afterall, and plus I need to get away a bit.

I pull along my suitcase as I walk out of the premises of the airport and to a car that had been waiting for me. The driver bows, taking my suitcase and placing it in the trunk whereas I slid into the backseat. “It’s been awhile, Mr. Lu” I chuckle at the words of the driver as he slides himself in the driver’s seat and begins to drive off.

Yep, I’ve been busy… last time I was here, I had to leave immediately” my eyes fall outside the window, staring at the buildings that we passed by, the other cars and the people. Yeah, I’m definitely home. It came as a surprise to many that you were coming home, Mr. Lu

A chuckle escapes my lips “Really now? I’m guessing my parents didn’t think I was serious… considering I’ve been cancelling trips here many times before” the driver only gives me a smile through the rearview mirror before concentrating back on the road. The rest of the ride was quiet.

To be quite honest, I didn’t expect Suho to ask me to stay for awhile in China. The order to give Kris a hand came out of nowhere and I began to question why but he never gave me an answer; from what I know, Kris could fend for himself. Heck, he can run everything in a perfectly smooth manner without us so why was Suho suddenly requesting for me to lend the chairman a hand? Well, whatever the reason may be it’s probably a good thing. I haven’t spend much time with the guy, now may be a good chance to catch up on each other and bond like the old times.

Hey, uh, drop me off at Wu Prime” I told the driver, seeing the building just up ahead “Sir?” “Just drop me off there and bring my stuff home, tell my parents I’ll be home for dinner” he doesn’t question anymore and just complies, dropping me off upfront. I give him quick thanks before entering the premises.

Everyone then just suddenly stops and starts to stare as if they’ve seen a ghost… Expected.

Dropping his smile, Luhan makes his way towards the elevators; no one had dared to block his path and everyone who was in the way backed off. Quiet greetings and welcomes filled the atmosphere around him as he walked by; when the doors to the lift opened, the employees who were occupying it quickly filed out, careful not to touch him as if, if they did, they would perish. Sometimes, Luhan wonders if he makes the right decision of putting on a poker face for employees, he was sometimes curious of how things would be if he switched it up a bit, sure he smiled every now and then but most of the time he just gave off this cold aura, it’s almost automatic.

Although, other times it’s a gift; he gets these certain uneasiness around certain employees that triggers the coldness. Per say, a female employee smiles at him, he could easily tell if it’s courteous or flirtatious and if it’s the latter, it usually doesn’t end well. Unlike Kai, he never messed around with those who work for their company. In a way, he was doing them a favor like saving them from getting fired and prolonging their stay at Wu Enterprise. He saves reputations both ways.

No one could blame him though, even if he wasn’t interested, female employees still were willing to throw themselves at his feet. Ding. The elevator doors open and he steps out meeting the surprised look of a certain girl residing on the very same floor “M-Mr. Lu…” she utters. Luhan gives a curt nod of his head as he walks straight ahead and knocks on the expensive wooden double doors before stepping inside without waiting for any answer from the other side

I didn’t say you could come inAh yes, who else could own such a cold tone? Luhan smiles and pockets his hands. The back of the chair was facing him; Kris was probably enjoying the view of China perhaps basking in the feeling of having so much at the palm of his hands.

Since when did I even care if you said I could come in or not?

The chairman’s ear perks at the sound of the familiar voice. He swivels his chair around, his brows raising in surprise at the sight of a certain doe-eyed businessman

What are you doing here?” Luhan almost laughed, really? Was that all he could say when he was the one who called him this morning and if the deer wasn’t mistaken, he swore he heard Kris sounding like he missed him “” Luhan says, rolling his eyes at him.

Kris smirks and props one elbow on the arm rest of his chair as he leans his cheek on his palm “Well what did you expect? A kiss?” “A hug would have been nice” he scoffs and flops himself down to comfortably sit on the sofa. Chuckling, Kris presses on a button on the small intercom “Ms. Peng, bring in two glasses of iced tea

Yes Mr. WuKris gets up and transfers himself to sit on the sofa opposite where Luhan was.

Really though, what are you doing here?

Isn’t it obvious?” Luhan laughs “I’ll be in Suho’s place; he was supposed to help you around here, correct?

Well that certainly explains a lot

The door opens and Mei Fen enters with the drinks, she keeps her lips locked as she sets down the glasses. Luhan’s gaze on her wasn’t intense but it was strong enough to be noticed, he was quite amused that such a girl could cause their Casanova to malfunction –or so, that’s what Sehun and Baekhyun said. Mei Fen bows and leaves.

What is it about your secretaries that always has Kai on their tails” Luhan smirks, his head turning from the door back to Kris “Jongin is in deep, isn’t he?

Deeper than the sea, baby” Luhan smirks and Kris shakes his head. The next topics consisted of Kris asking Luhan about the conditions in Seoul; the answers were the usual answers he gave Kris, how stocks were either steady or rising, there were a few minor problems but he assured the chairman that they managed it well. Like he said before, Wu Enterprise can run by itself for a week. Satisfied with the answers, Kris leans back on his chair “And how is Hana?

And how could I expect him to miss that question? Luhan smiles “She’s doing well, her exam results would be coming out tomorrow

Kris takes a quiet breath in, suddenly feeling anxious; he wished Luhan hadn’t even said that. Ever since her exam day, he’s been feeling anxious as hell, Kris Wu is never like this. He never got anxious before presenting a huge business proposal so why should he get nervous over a test.

Oh, I don’t know… because you’re girlfriend’s fate is in those results? He mentally rolls his eyes at his subconscious thoughts. “So…” Luhan pulls him back to reality “Let’s get down to business, shall we?

Kris smirks “Ofcourse but before that, I have something to tell you…

Ge” Yookyung looks up with worried eyes at her brother who had just entered the small café.

Her elder brother gives her a smile and a brief hug before sitting down on the chair across her; he had called off a meeting with some investors following the abrupt call that Yookyung had given him, if only it weren’t for the desperation and uneasiness in her voice.

Then again, he’d call off any meeting for his family.

What’s wrong? You sounded like some loan shark is after you on the phone” he asks, chuckling to lighten up the mood. Yookyung cracks a smile before she reaches to her side and pulls out the folder that contained the contract before handing it to her brother.

He ran his eyes over the fine print on the paper, his face contorting into that of confusion. It was a contract for a very high position at Wu Prime but that’s not what bothered him… it was the fact that the position being offered belonged to their mother.

What about mama?” he questions, as he closes the folder and places it on the table. Yookyung takes a deep breath “Mama resigned” she shakes her head then runs her fingers through her hair, a little frustrated. “Well, did you talk to her?” he asks and she shook her head again. Chun clicks his tongue before taking out his phone and dials his mother’s number however much to his dismay none of his calls were picked up.

What am I gonna do Chun?” she asks –or whine rather.

Chun takes a deep breath “Like you have a choice just take the job” “Are you crazy?!” she threw her arms in the air “Do you know how big the fashion department is? Why don’t you take it over?” she pleads the last sentence to her brother but Chun only casted a look of sympathy. He couldn’t leave his position under Sonya’s father because he honestly didn’t want to work for a company run by the Wu.

It wasn’t personal; he just didn’t want to get involve in their rather rash way of running things especially now that Kris was the chairman. Hell knows how Kris Wu ran things, they weren’t in the prettiest of ways but they sure as hell were efficient.

Look” he places a hand on top of his sister’s “I’m not gonna tell you what to do, it’s your choice just don’t regret whatever you decide on

Psh. She rolls her eyes and swats her brother’s hand away “Really helpful of you, Chun

Next Day

Tao pinches the bridge of his nose, sighing in a frustrating manner as he sat down inside a coffee shop that certain Thursday morning before going to the office. It was around eight in the morning and office time was at nine so he had an hour to enjoy himself.

I’m a boss anyway… who cares if I’m late. He thinks to himself, turning his attention outside the window, watching passers by observing how some of them were rushing, some looking like they were walking slow on purpose either buying time or wasting it. He sips on his cup of Americano, leaning back on his chair and crossing his legs; his thoughts drift off to the conversation he had with Hana just last night during dinner.

To him, it didn’t seem to make sense why Yifan’s grandmother –secretly- brought out Cube. Is that even possible? and he also questioned himself as to why would the previous owner sell it, it’s not like it was one the verge of bankruptcy and the company was on a pretty steady pace.

On another note, he wouldn’t vocally admit it but he think it was stupid of Hana to even consider the decision. Actually, he found a number of idiotic things about her, like how she questioned him if Kris would be mad if she turns down the transfer –if she does get it- and go back to Cube; wasn’t the answer obvious? Ofcourse gege will be mad… No. he corrects himself, mad was an understatement. All hell will probably break lose.

He also found it stupid how she keeps so much to herself, how she talks it out with others but found it hard to talk about with Kris. He’s her significant other for god’s sake! Tsk.

Sometimes, he wanted to call her stupid face to face but never had the guts to do so… probably because she also had points to things she does and says. Sigh. Women are so hard to understand. He finally concludes.

“Mind if I join you?” his head snaps to the side, he looks up and smirks “I don’t see how that’s gonna be a problem”

Minseok laughs, sitting on the empty chair across him and sets down his cup of caramel frap on the table. For a moment, it was quiet and neither of the two minded at all; Tao stared back out of the window again, his eyes wandering until it focused on a couple arguing just across the street, the girl looked like she was crying “Tch. Couples…” he mutters catching Xiumin’s attention and he too looks out of the shop’s window.

He clicks his tongue and shakes his head. Tao shakes his head aswell and tears his eyes away from the scene to Minseok “Yah, how are things with Yookyung?” “Huh?” “Psh…” Tao rolls his eyes “Come on Minseok, don’t pull the stupid card on me… you at it”

“We’re okay…?” he wasn’t quite sure how to answer the question; however the creepy sinister smile that Tao flashed him was rather disturbing. Tao props up his elbow on the table, resting his chin on his palm “You miss her?”

“What’s with the question about Yookyung-ssi?”

“Curiosity” he reaches out a hand to poke Xiumin’s forehead but the latter moves his head back, out of Tao’s reach. Slightly irritated by the small movement, he retreats his hand and grabs onto his cup instead to take a sip “Aish… what happened between the two of you anyway?”

Tao can sometimes be the nosiest among them all that’s why Xiumin has been training himself for years to keep the younger boy from getting curious after learning from Kris that he stops at nothing until his curiosity is fed. When Tao wants something, he can go through hell and back to get it… Like the latest collection from Gucci. Xiumin inwardly laughs while Tao sits across him, still waiting for him to speak.

But Minseok keeps his mouth zipped thus the other pouts “Yah ~ come on, tell me!”

“Seriously Tao you sound like a damn highschool girl hungry for gossip”

“Aish!” Tao squirms a bit in his seat “Just tell me! Come on, are we friends or what?”

Xiumin sighs in defeat. Why did I even share a table with him? “Look” he feigns a bored expression “Yookyung and I are friends, I met her, she met me, got separated for a long time and saw each other again, there happy?” Tao’s eye twitches, still a little unconvinced and unsatisfied so he pops another question “But you’re gonna choose her, right?”

“What?”

“I mean… you did mention that your old man would make you choose who you’d marry so… I mean, assuming that you and Yookyung go way back, you know each other better and marriage will be easy between you two” Xiumin frowns, he never really liked talking about his love life, actually he preferred being quiet and watching the world go by.

Tao notices the sudden change in his demeanor and mutters an apology; his companion breathes out rather heavily and diverts his attention to the view outside “I’d rather not talk about that really, my mind is still a little unsettled” he admits before a thought comes training along his thoughts and he chuckles “Kris would probably get married before me and he hasn’t even announced plans of his engagement yet”

“Tch, yeah” Tao laughs along “He’s definitely more than ready to get married, I think if Hana were to say she’s ready he’d have a wedding arranged in a day”

The two fall quiet after the little round of laughter. Unanimously, they both sigh heavily as if they were hopeless. Minseok was not going to lie to himself but he felt a little envious of his friend, it wasn’t everyday that you find a relationship that actually works out well. Sure, they were like –well, sort of like- other couples who fought and had their down hills but the fact that they work it out as best as they can manage and come out stronger than the day before was admirable.

It was a relationship that was perfectly flawed, it wasn’t filled with fairytale bull, perhaps it wasn’t so ordinary too –blame Kris’ wealth and love of power- but it was a relationship filled with love. Ugh, that came off greasy. He shudders.

On the other hand, Tao found it crazy. He doesn’t know why but as stupid and idiotic and clumsy as Hana may be, he can’t imagine anyone else standing beside his Gege who could deal with all the crazy he does. I mean… what kind of female would be brave enough to stand in the same room as Kris when he’s throwing stuff around and just stay still, only to speak when he’s done with his tantrum? He laughs at the memory: the one time that Kris flew in from China in a rage because someone tipped him that his girlfriend was seen with another guy at a restaurant who was not any of his friends. The giant basically turned into a dragon and turned their condo upside down only to find out from her that it was an investor and she was given a task to close the deal for Suho; he could vividly remember Kris calling him to have an interior designer sent to the trashed condo. The amusing thing he found most was that Hana stated everything in the calmest manner, she didn’t get pissed off, she was calm the whole time.

Yeah, Kris is an idiot. He concludes to himself.

“I need to get laid” Tao mumbles to himself and Xiumin laughs “Nah, you just need a girlfriend man… want me to arrange a blind date for you?”

Tao rolls his eyes, he glances at his watch then stands up as Xiumin follows “Before you meddle with my love life, try to settle yours first” the older one pouts muttering idiot as they exit the coffee shop.

“By the way… Hana’s test results will come out today right?” Xiumin asks, Tao nods his head “Yeah, I asked Chen to get the results since Hana’s too occupied today”

“I see… you think she’ll pass?”

“Tch, with all those studying and reviews she’s been doing? I doubt she’ll fail”

Xiumin shrugs “Well, we never know…”

Hana.

Today is the day!

Calm down, Hana… deep breath in, deep breath out. I did as I had mentally told myself as I sat down behind my desk, arranging Suho’s schedule for the day. Ever since he became CEO he has not only been swamped with paperwork but business meetings aswell; I sometimes think he’s had it worst than Kris when the latter was still in power.

But from my point of view, Kris was intimidating, he turned down things he didn’t want to do or deal with whereas Joonmyeon takes every opportunity regardless. He should really learn how to say no… sigh.

The faint sound of the elevator from outside my door cued me to get up and with a smile; I exit my office and greet Suho as he was walking towards his own office “Good morning, Mr. Kim” he returns the gesture, opening his door and I follow him inside. He seems like he’s in a good mood today. I walk over to his table and set down the tablet of his schedule beside his laptop for review while he settles himself on his chair and opens his drawer in search of his documents from yesterday.

“You seem like you’re in a good mood today, sir” I chuckle. His face definitely looked brighter today, no trace of stress at all. Suho laughs giving me a quick glance “Am I giving myself away too much, Hana?” “Yes sir… very” I laugh whilst nodding my head.

“Perhaps…” I sing sang “It has something to do with a certain someone filling in for me yesterday?”

For a moment, I swear I saw his eyes flicker but I keep playing, there was something about teasing Joonmyeon that I found amusing. Maybe it was the way he would suddenly feign innocence or the fact that he seems like he’s in denial of certain things, whatever it was Sehun seems right: teasing Joonmyeon is fun.

Suho eyes me in a suspicious manner as he brings his fingers together and prop his elbows on his expensive wooden desk “Ms. Kim, is it just me or have you been a little too fond of teasing lately?” I shook my head, chuckling to myself before giving him a smile, ignoring his question “Well, Mr. Kim, I believe you have a schedule to approve of”

I gesture at the tablet lying on his table; he eyes me one last time before taking it and scrolls through the data before returning it to me. As usual, he rejected no one and approved of every meeting.

“You work too hard, Joonmyeon” I comment, sighing quietly as I take the tab from him. He smiles as he begins to open up the documents to work on “I just don’t like disappointing people” “That’s unavoidable” “Not if you work hard” he retaliates and I shake my head in defeat “I’ll be in my office, Mr. Kim”

As I was about to exit the door, he calls back for me “Yes sir?”

“I hope your exam results come out well” he smiles. I smile back at him, thanking him before finally exiting his office. I hope so too… I really do.
