Chapter Six

Misunderstandings

Key and Minho sat facing each other; Minho behind his desk and Key in front of him. Neither was speaking, Key unsure of how to start.

"I don't mean to pry, Key. We don't have to talk about this if you don't want," Minho said. "I'm just being nosy." He waved his hand, as if it would get rid of the awkward atmosphere.

Key was used to the questions by now. He was twenty-four and had a four year old and no wife. Curiosities were bound to be sparked. He used to mind, wondering why people couldn't mind their damn business, but he had come to terms with his strange situation. He didn't mind telling Minho, especially when he seemed to be a great boyfriend to Taemin, whom would always be one of Key's best friends.

"Its okay, Minho. I think that you knowing would help me in the long run, since it kind of explains the importance of my business." Key assured him. He still wasn't sure where to start, though. It was different with each person, depending on how much Key wanted the person to know about himself. "What has Taemin told you about our friendship?"

"Just that you went to high school together. That you were a great friend who was there for him during his hardships. He did say that you had some hardships during his second year of college and he wasn't really there for you." Minho said honestly. Key smiled, Taemin would be the one to blame himself for something he had no responsibility for.

"Well, I'll start from the beginning then," Key said, thinking about his carefree high school days. "I am from a pretty well off family, as you could imagine since I went to the same exclusive high school that Taemin went to. I used to think that the world revolved around me and what I wanted," Key reminisced about the times where the most important part of his life was hanging out with his friends and getting into a good college. Now his days were filled with trying to set up a good life for Danny.

Minho smiled, listening patiently.

"I was an only child so my parents had high hopes for me taking over the family company, but they understood when I told them I had no interest in technological communications. They supported me when I decided to go to culinary school instead of a traditional university, and they accepted me when I told them about my 'alternative' lifestyle. My dad even made a joke about needing another heir because I wouldn't give them a grandchild." Key smiled ruefully. "That gave them the idea that they should have another child. They were pretty young and my mom was assured by her doctor that women were having babies at later ages with little risk."

"I was nineteen when my mom called to tell me that she was pregnant. We were all really excited to have a baby around. I thought, I will be the awesome older brother who gets to spoil the baby! Everything went well with the pregnancy and even the birth. I never could have expected them to die on their way home from the hospital." Key said, getting slightly teary eyed. It was difficult for him to tell the story, even four years later. His parents were honestly the best people he ever met, and they were taken away from not only him, but a defenseless baby that would never have a chance to get to know his real parents. "My mom was released from the hospital at around 8 p.m. and they were hit by a drunk driver at 8:15. Thankfully, my dad had strapped Danny into the car seat very well. He was generally unscathed, even though my parents died in the head-on collision."

"I'm so sorry," Minho whispered, putting his hand on Key's.

"I can't really say its okay," Key laughed bitterly. "Though I was pretty set financially, it was really hard on me emotionally. I was only 20 and now there was this baby that I had to take care of, even though I hadn't even cared for a pet on my own in my entire life. My parents' lawyers asked me what I wanted to do with Danny. I have aunts and uncles on both sides of my family, but I couldn't do that. I knew that they would only look at him as the key to my parents empire. My name is Kim Kibum, by the way."

"Oh, ." Minho said, recognizing the name. "As in, Kim Enterprises?"

"The very same. Did you read the articles?" Key asked, knowing that his name had been on every tabloid four years ago. The death of his parents had been very public due to the immense amount of money that they had.

"Yeah, some. I just remember the endless speculations as to who would take over the company after their deaths," Minho said.

"My Godmother, if you were wondering. Anyways, in the beginning all I would do was look at Danny and cry. I couldn't handle the grief and I alienated everyone. It wasn't until my Godmother came to see me that I straightened myself out. I knew that I had to keep my stuff together for Danny. I had to finish culinary school and make something of myself to provide a stable home for Danny. I couldn't just live off of my inheritance, because that wouldn't be setting a good example for Danny." Key explained as Minho nodded.

"Danny is my son in every sense of the word. I decided that I was going to be there for him the way my parents were for me, and I am. I finished culinary school with the help of friends and my Godmother. Because I hated the idea of leaving Danny with strangers at day care, some of my friends became my support system. I think the reason why Taemin feels so guilty is because he was unable to be there for me. I don't blame him though, he'd gone away for college and made a new life. Woohyun, Jinwoon, and Mir though, those guys had my back. They would take turns watching Danny while I had class." Key laughed. "I became a dad with their help. We may not be the most conventional family, but we are family. They're very protective of both me and Danny, which I think showed this past Saturday night."

"I was wondering why they were so cold to Jonghyun," Minho laughed, fully understanding their perspective now.

"They're usually much worse." Key laughed. "I wanted to go on a date once, when Danny was about two, and they basically scared off my date. They did the typical, 'What are your intentions' thing, it was so embarrassing. But after that date, I realized that I couldn't really date yet. I was insecure about how guys would react to a child and such."

"Well, if they realize how awesome of a person, and dad, you are then they will stick around," Minho reassured.

"You don't even know what kind of dad I am," Key laughed. "I could be terrible."

"Just watching you and Danny, I can tell that's not true." Minho replied and Key smiled shyly.

"So in an attempt to create a stable home life for Danny, I decided to open a cafe. Not just a coffee place, but an affordable gourmet style bistro. I know that's not the most conventional thing to pitch, but I like it." Key said, transitioning into the real reason he was in Minho's office.

"That is a unique concept, but I think it will be an easy one to sell." Minho said, opening his sketch pad. "We need to figure out who your target customers are and how you want to market your place."

Key and Minho talked about the details of the cafe, specifically what Key thought set his place apart from the others, when Minho's assistant called him over the phone intercom.

"Jessica, I'm in a meeting. What is it?" Minho answered. Key was impressed that Minho had an assistant, and more so that he was so authoritative. Key could hear Minho's assistant talking urgently.

"Tell him I am with a client. I can't see him right now." Minho answered, looking up and Key and smiling politely.

A different voice could be heard on the phone now and Minho rubbed his temple, so Key wondered who it could possibly be that was stressing Minho out so much.

"I am in a meeting." "Yes, I know I don't usually take lunch meetings." "Its not Taemin." "Look, I can't talk right now. I'll call you later." "I am trying to get rid of you." "OH MY GOD KIM JONGHYUN I WILL SEE YOU LATER IF YOU WANT, BUT I AM BUSY RIGHT NOW" Minho finally raised his voice and Key couldn't help but laugh. So that's who was bothering Minho.

"Yes, the client is listening to how incessantly annoying you are being and he is not," Minho began but was cut off by the click of the phone on the other end being hung up. There was a shuffle of footsteps and what seemed to Key like pleading on the assistant's part to keep Jonghyun from bothering Minho. Key had sympathy for the poor girl, he had seen first hand how relentless Jonghyun could be. Minho got up and went to the door when it flew open, revealing a smiling Jonghyun and a frowning assistant. Minho dismissed her, assuring her that he understood that the unwelcome guest was definitely unstoppable.

"Hello Minho, Key." Jonghyun said with a wide smile. Key knew why his friends had been protective and why Minho had tried to get Jonghyun to leave. It was the look that Jonghyun was giving Key right at this second. It was a look that he had seen Jinwoon and Mir give girls plenty of times. The look of determination.

"Jonghyun, what did I just say? I am with a client, please get out." Minho said in a harsh tone.

"But I need to talk to you," Jonghyun said, not taking his eyes off of Key, smirk in place. As much as Key hated to admit it, Jonghyun was definitely too attractive for his own good. He had a confidence about him that could probably draw in anyone.

"We can talk later. Get out." Minho answered. Jonghyun simply shook his head. Right at that moment, Key's phone began to vibrate in his pocket.

"You can talk to him if you'd like," Key said to Minho. "I have a phone call anyway."

As Key looked down at his phone he didn't recognize the number, but answered anyway. He made his way out of the office, when he heard Danny's voice on the line.

"Daddy, I have a question." Danny said, breathing hard into the phone.

"What's up, baby?" Key asked.

"Taemin said that I could have ice cream, but I told him that you said not to upset my tummy no more. What do I do?" Danny asked. Key smiled to himself, incredibly proud at how well Danny was behaving. They had pretty strict rules about sweets, but Key felt that Danny deserved a treat.

"Baby, put Taemin on the phone." Key said, knowing that Taemin was probably trying to coax Danny into eating everything and playing wildly while his dad wasn't around.

"Is he in trouble, Daddy? I told him you know everything but he didn't believe me!" Danny cried.

"He's not, its okay." Key reassured Danny. He heard Danny tell Taemin 'told you so' and Key couldn't help but laugh. That was Danny's current catch phrase.

"Am I in trouble?" Taemin asked.

"No, you're not in trouble." Key laughed. "But do me a favor and stop spoiling him. You don't have anything to make up for." Key knew that Taemin still felt guilty about not being there for him and Danny but the way to kids' hearts was not through their stomach. "Also, can you keep Danny occupied for a little longer, Jonghyun just showed up here and I think Minho is having a hard enough time without adding you and Danny to the situation."

"I can't believe he's there. That probably has radar. Oh my God, I said the s-word. Does Danny know what that means? I am the worst influence. What is wrong with me?" Taemin started freaking out. Key could hear Danny laughing in the background. Key walked further away from the office with the slight suspicion that he was being overheard.

", , !" Danny chanted in the background and Key laughed. Danny had a habit on picking up words that people reacted to. If Taemin had kept going, Danny would have let it go.

"Oh my God, Kibum I am so sorry. What do I do? What do I do?!" Taemin asked frantically.

"Who's Kibum?" Danny asked.

"Its okay Taemin, just explain to him what the word means in non-explicit terms, and that it is a bad word to call people. He'll understand that you made a mistake," Key explained calmly.

After getting Taemin to stop freaking out, Key hung up the phone and headed back towards Minho's office. As he approached, he heard Minho and Jonghyun arguing.

"I can't believe you just said that Minho!" Jonghyun said, "I never use people."

"Dude, he's not listening right now and who do you think you're kidding. I know you like the back of my hand." Minho answered.

"Ugh I don't know dude. This guy has just been on my mind. I think if I just sleep with him, I'll be able to move on," Jonghyun reasoned. Key almost laughed out loud, but he kept it together. He wondered whether Minho and Jonghyun were talking about him. It was pretty evident that they were, but Kibum didn't like jumping to conclusions. "Would you have even told me that you took his account?" Jonghyun asked.

"Probably not." Minho answered and sighed. "Stop with the puppy dog eyes Jonghyun, they don't work. Besides, he's Taemin's friend so he's probably gonna be around from now on and I don't need you making things awkward for everybody." Key could almost see Minho rubbing his temple in indecision, so he thought he could help things along and opened the door to Minho's office.

"Hey Key, you remember Jonghyun?" Minho said, finally regaining his manners.

"Yes, hi." Key answered. "Did you guys finish talking? We have to finish the designs since its almost one."

"Oh yeah. Jonghyun you didn't tell me what you were here for." Minho said directing his attention to Jonghyun.

"I was actually here to share some good news!" Jonghyun said excitedly. "The band is debuting in three weeks! They finally set a date and a single, which I wrote!"

"He's a music producer at SME, and he's been working with a new rookie group for a while now," Minho clarified and Key nodded, impressed.

"That's awesome!" Key congratulated. "What are they going to be called? I'll keep an eye out for them."

"Aw, you gonna keep tabs on me?" Jonghyun smiled. "I'm flattered."

Key wanted to stay neutral to Jonghyun but his smile was so freaking cute, he thought to himself. "Ha, if you're lucky." Key then saw Minho shaking his head.

"I'd consider myself very lucky if you decided to stalk me."

"You'll be disappointed then, baby." Key said, adding the baby subconsciously.

"See, you already have a nickname for me." Jonghyun smiled.

"Cling on to your delusions," Key laughed. Jong was quick on the uptake, and Key liked that.

"I'll do that, gorgeous. And to my wet dreams too!" Jonghyun retorted. Key had to blush, it had been a long time since someone so actively pursued him. It felt good to be the object of someone's affection or, in this case, lust.

"You should get going, Kim Jonghyun." Minho said in a no nonsense tone.

"Fine, Choi Minho. I'll go. Just a quick question though. Where's Taemin? I called his office and they said he was here." Jonghyun asked, looking genuinely curious (and adorable, Key thought).

"He stepped out with Danny." Key answered for him. "We were having lunch but they gave us some privacy to talk business."

Jonghyun's jaw seemed slightly tighter to Key, when he responded. "Et tu, Minho?"

Key laughed at the reference, and Jonghyun left.

"Sorry about him, he's kind of scatterbrained." Minho said getting back work. Key shook his head and went back to focussing on what Minho had to say. His mind wandered occasionally, but he'd deny it if anyone asked.

A/N: Whaaaaat? Updated within like 12 hours! I gotta say I was inspired by a comment. Is that weird? Someone said update soon, so I did. :)

Well anyways. This is Key's part of the story. I really like the dynamic between Key and Danny. AND Key and Minho. IDK.

I thought I'd add a little JongKey at the end, since you know, its their story and all. Haha.
