Chapter Thirty Two

Misunderstandings

A/N: I know, I’m terrible. Explanation and giveaway in the A/N at the bottom!

One Year Later

There were many, many perks to waking up to Kim Jonghyun. Even though it happened every morning, Kibum reveled in it. It was much easier to wake up and face the day when soft caresses were the thing that roused you from sleep. It felt nice to be loved like this. The only problem being that it was easy to wake up but difficult to get out of bed, even when Kibum knew he had things to do.

Today, he was well aware of the fact that he had to be out the door by eight a.m. and here he was pushing seven and still laying in bed being thoroughly kissed by his boyfriend. Pulling away, and fighting the desire to give in to the kisses, he tried to convince them both that he needed to get up and ready for the day. “Alright Jjong I have to get up for real now.”

Ignoring Kibum’s words entirely, Jonghyun trailed his lips down to his boyfriend’s neck, “I’m pretty sure we can have ten more minutes,” he murmured.

Sighing and pushing Jonghyun off of him completely, KIbum closed his eyes and tried to visualize all the things he had to do today. “We really don’t,” he started, “I have to get up, shower, get Danny up and showered, feed us breakfast, head over to the-” His rant was cut off by lips being pressed into his again.

“Don’t stress out, baby.” Jonghyun cooed, rubbing his hands down his side. “While you get in the shower I’ll get Danny up. And he can eat cereal like a regular five year old, he doesn’t need you to make him a frittata.” He chuckled at the last bit, knowing that Jonghyun tried to get Danny to ‘act his age’ every once in a while.

“Okay, okay.” Kibum agreed, finally making his way out of the bed. “Don’t forget to pick up Minho’s-”

Again he was cut off, but this time by an exaggerated huff. “Its not even your wedding, please stop freaking out.” Giving up, with a shrug of his shoulders, Kibum made it into the restroom and got in the shower.

Jonghyun was right, it wasn’t his wedding, but he couldn’t help but be extremely excited and anxious about Taemin and Minho’s wedding. He was excited because he knew that they were meant to be together, and after all of the planning that they had done, it was bound to be a pretty awesome wedding. He was anxious as all hell, though, because for some reason he had offered to cater the wedding for them. Technically he wouldn’t be the one cooking, but he wanted his friend’s wedding to go flawlessly, and the food played a big part in the wedding. He had the chef make the dishes that would be served at least three times a week since it had been decided, just to make sure that he was competent in making the dishes. He never disappointed, or even got frustrated with Kibum (and that may or may not have definitely influenced his rather nice bonus during Christmas).

After getting dressed, Kibum made his way into the kitchen, where he heard whining. “But why can’t you make me a frittata, Appa?” Danny questioned, looking down at his cereal suspiciously. Kibum smiled before reassuring Danny that eating cereal once did not mean that he would have to eat boring breakfast from now on. Although he did like to be a kid every now and then, breakfast was never one of those times.

It had been months since Danny had started calling Jonghyun appa exclusively and calling Key daddy, and even longer since Jonghyun moved in. They were a pretty awesome family, if Kibum said so himself, especially watching his two boys change to make compromises for the others. Danny had allowed Jonghyun and himself to be silly and eat junk food more often, and Jonghyun had matured and become more of a father figure than a friend to Danny.

“How is cereal boring breakfast?” Jonghyun laughed, pouring himself a bowl too.

“There’s only like, two ingredients.” Danny chirped, sticking a spoonful of Cheerios in his mouth regardless of his protests.

“Yeah well Daddy doesn’t have time for anything this morning, so you’ll have to make due.” Jonghyun said with a full mouth. Danny shrugged and kept eating.

After breakfast, Key left their apartment and headed to the venue where the wedding would be held. He was not only catering the wedding, but also supervising the preparations and decorations. He flitted around the reception area, making sure that the centerpieces all had fresh flowers and were actually centered and triple checking the seating assignments. By the time that he was done making one last trip into the kitchen, it was time to go get ready. He headed in to the wing that was designated for Taemin and his groomsmen, texting Jonghyun to make sure that he and Danny were already with Minho and getting ready.

From: Jonghyun <3

Yeah, we’re already dressed and everything. Danny was too excited to wait.

To: Jonghyun <3

Well make sure he doesn’t get anything on his tux. Is he still mad at Uncle Minmin?

From Jonghyun <3

Nah, I’m pretty sure he’s over not being the best man. He keeps telling the other groomsmen that being a ring bearer is much more important haha.

Kibum laughed and smiled fondly at his phone. Danny had been unreasonably upset at the fact that he was not Minho’ best man, claiming that Uncle Minmin told him all the time he loved Danny more than Jonghyun.

“What’s so funny?” Taemin’s voice interrupted his train of thought. Kibum looked up to see a truly gorgeous Taemin standing before him. He was dressed in an impeccable black tux, hair combed back, looking every bit the man he was.

“Wow,” was all Kibum managed to get out. As much as he knew that Taemin was a grown man, he couldn’t help but think of the wiry teenager he knew in high school.

“I clean up good, huh?” Taemin chided, Kibum nodded and willed himself not to cry. There was no reason that he should cry during such a happy occasion, but tears threatened to spill anyway. “Not that I don’t love you, but please don’t cry. I don’t want my wedding pictures to be ruined by your ugly crying face.”

Nodding, Kibum laughed. “I gotta get ready too.”

As he got his navy suit on, Kibum called out to Taemin, “How are you feeling?”

“Fine, hungry mainly.” Taemin shouted back.

“I mean about getting married, smartass.”

“I know,” Taemin laughed. “I’m ready, hyung.” Key walked out of his dressing area to see a smile spread on Taemin’s face. “I love MInho and I’m just excited to marry him. Like, who gets this lucky, you know?  I’m marrying my best friend, no offense to you, and the person that I love most in the world. And I know he loves me, just by the way he looks at me. Like I’m… the center of the universe. I couldn’t ask for anything more.”

“I get it, I get it. You don’t have to ramble on and on about how perfect your love is,” Kibum teased, seeing nothing but confidence in his friend’s features. “I’m so happy for you Taemin.” Just as he was feeling another bout of feelings coming up, the other two groomsmen made their way into the sitting area, whooping loudly.

Taesun and Jongin definitely brought down the sentimentality of the moment, proclaiming that this ceremony needed to be short because they were hungry “as balls.”

It was difficult to reconcile that these were the two who got drunk and cried after MInho’s proposal at Taemin’s birthday dinner last year. All of their friends and family had gathered to celebrate the occasion and Minho had taken the opportunity to gift Taemin an engagement ring (one that Kibum had assisted in picking out). Taesun and Jongin had tearfully, between drunken hiccups, ‘threatened’ Minho by pleading with him to make sure their Taeminnie was happy. It had been quite the scene, with hugs and whispered mentions of castration until their respective significant others pulled them away, stifling laughter behind their hands.

Taemin hadn’t cried at any step of his journey, and that concerned Key at first, but seeing Taemin be all smiles for the past months and hearing how sure he was about marrying Minho had quelled all that.

It had been decided in the early days of planning that Taemin would be the one to walk down the aisle to Minho (the decision based on a coin flip), so Kibum awaited his turn to walk into the ceremony patiently. Sort of. As he waited, Kibum couldn’t help but start to get nervous. Literally, he would be walking down the aisle to Jonghyun in a few minutes. He understood that there was no significance other than accompanying their friends in their wedding ceremony, but he was a little bit jittery. It would be a lie to say that his friend’s marriage hadn’t sparked ideas in his brain. He knew that Jonghyun and himself hadn’t been together very long, but being together was natural for them.

Their little family unit was something that he couldn’t tire of, even if he tried. They worked so well together, balancing their schedules in order to spend enough time with each other, and never tiring of each other. Not to say that there weren’t fights, but they never mattered enough to disrupt their happiness.

As Kibum got his cue from the wedding planner, he made his way into the venue. Taemin and Minho had chosen to get married in a small church on the coast, with windows that were overlooking the sea. It was beautiful and private, and the reception was going to be held in extravagant tents that were propped up to take in the view, while still providing air conditioning (Taemin was adamant that he didn’t want to spend his wedding day sweating like a pig). Even though the church was nothing short of spectacular, the first thing he saw when he made his way in was Jonghyun. Key saw Jonghyun inhale sharply before breaking out into a huge smile. Kibum had to remember to pace himself down the aisle, and that this was not his wedding.

With the way Jonghyun’s eyes were swimming with happiness and affection, Key thought that maybe it would be okay to bring up their own possible wedding. The heat radiating from his boyfriend’s smile was definitely encouraging.

Kibum shook himself out of those thoughts as soon as the wedding march started playing. He looked over at Taemin, who it seemed, was walking quicker than he was supposed to to make his way to Minho. The look on his face was just … blissful. HIs eyes travelled to Minho who pretty much had the expression on his face. The only difference being that his eyes looked the slightest bit tearful. They both looked so genuinely excited to be getting married, that Key couldn’t help the tears that filled his own eyes.

When the couple exchanged rings and their self written vows, Taemin finally lost it. His eyes began to get glazed over during his own vows, specifically when recounting how much Minho and his love meant to him, As Minho began speaking though, big fat tears made their way down his face, but with his smile still in place.

“The vows I make are only a fraction of what I want to do with you, for you. The vows I make are not promises but privileges. I get to spend the rest of my life with you. I get to be with you through all of your successes and be there for you in your troubles. I get to spend the rest of my life trying to make you as happy as you make me. I get to spend the rest of my life loving you, and that’s all I’ll ever want. I’m thankful everyday for having you in my life, especially on a day like today that I question what I’ve done to deserve you. A little part of me still cannot believe that I’m the one who gets to marry you. I love you, and I can’t wait to be your husband.”

Key almost would have laughed at his best friend’s silent tears, if his face hadn’t been filled with tears too. At least the planner had thought ahead and stuffed tissues into Kibum’s suit pockets. After offering one to Taemin, and using one for himself, the ceremony carried on.

As Minho and Taemin were announced as officially married, Key couldn’t help but look over at Jonghyun and smile. He was a little surprised to find his boyfriend looking at him as well, but he couldn’t suppress the chuckle that escaped his lips. Jonghyun’s face was covered with tears and what Key assumed was snot. He couldn’t believe that he had missed his boyfriend as a blubbering mess. After the kiss, the couple walked out of the ceremony with the wedding party. Finding his boyfriend quickly, Kibum took him into his arms, where Jonghyun continued crying a bit.

“Why are you crying, Jjong?” Kibum asked softly, trying not to smile or laugh.

“Its just” -hiccup- “that I” -hiccup- “am so” -hiccup- “happy for them.” Jonghyun got out slowly. He withdrew himself from Key’s arms and tried to calm himself down. After a couple of deep breaths, he completed his thought. “I never thought I would see Minho so happy, and I’m just so happy, I don’t know. They’re just meant to be, and their ceremony was so beautiful, I couldn’t stop myself.”

“You’re such a sap,” Key laughed, hugging Jonghyun again.

“I’m gonna be much, much worse at our wedding,” Jonghyun mumbled, almost inaudibly. Almost. Key didn’t know if he was meant to have heard the comment or not, but he didn’t want to comment on it because they hadn’t really talked about that before. Although sometimes they talked about their future, it usually pertained to something trivial or to Danny.

‘Can you live with this couch for the next five years?’ Jonghyun questioned as they shopped for a new living room set after he moved in.

‘Look, this is a really good high school, Danny should come here.’ Key noted as they were out in the city.

There was assumptions, obviously. They were serious enough to live together, but marriage was a whole other thing. ‘This is good,’ Kibum thought to himself. ‘Relationships go one of two ways, marriage or a breakup.’ It was hard to keep his cool when he wanted to ask Jonghyun exactly what he meant by that, but in favor of not worrying too much about it, Key let it go. He didn’t want to get too riled up about it.

Together with the rest of the wedding party, Danny included, they ushered the guests towards the reception area. They took in the area with impressed eyes. Originally neither of them could really picture a tent wedding, having trouble coming up with a mental image, but it definitely exceeded their expectations.

Danny had wondered repeatedly if it would be like the time they took a tent to the Hangang river, but even he looked amazed at the reception venue. It was beautiful with its rustic feel and free use of flowers. It was elegant yet welcoming, much like the newly wed couple.

“This is definitely not like camping,” Danny said in awe. They made their way to the table designated for the wedding party. The celebrated couple had yet to make their entrance, God only knew what those two were up to, Key chuckled to himself.

As much as it amused him that Minho and Taemin were very likely making out in a closet somewhere, he was dying to go into the kitchen to check on things. He was almost certain that things were fine and that he could relax, but that didn’t stop him from worrying. It was a complex he picked up as soon as he became a dad. Key was suddenly pulled from his thoughts by a calloused hand squeezing his own.

“Stop thinking so hard,” Jonghyun whispered. “Everything is gonna be perfect, and everyone is going to love the food.” Key nodded shallowly, never failing to be surprised when Jonghyun read his mind. It happened more often the longer they were together, and much more often than Kibum ever admitted to.

Before another thought could enter his mind, Taemin and Minho were announced. The pair came in holding hands with swollen lips stretched into wide grins.

Almost immediately, they were ushered to the dance floor to begin their first dance as a married couple. Even though there was an excited electricity running through the tent, a sort of lovely peace settled over the guests as the wedding song began to play.

    “I’ve waited a hundred years

    But I’d wait a million more for you

    Nothing prepared me for

    What the privilege of being yours would do”

Taemin twirled Minho along the dance floor to the soft crooning, evidently smiling at the way that his husband mouthed the lyrics at him. They danced with ease as the sweet music surrounded them.

    “If I had only felt the warmth within your touch

    If I had only seen how you smile when you blush

    Or how you curl your lip when you concentrate enough

    Well I would have known

    What I was living for all along

    What I’ve been living for”

Kibum shifted slightly in his seat, looking over to Danny who was watching enraptured. He then turned his head to face Jonghyun, only to find him staring back.

    “Your love is my turning page

    Where only the sweetest words remain

    Every kiss is a cursive line

    Every touch is a redefining phrase”

“Shouldn’t you be watching the happy couple?” Key whispered.

“I am,” Jonghyun replied with a smile.

“You are such a cheese-ball, Kim Jonghyun.”

“And you love it, Kim Kibum!” Jonghyun chuckled softly. “Hey, when we get married you won’t have to change your last name.”

A majority of Key’s brain wanted to question what Jonghyun meant by that, it desperately pleaded with his mouth to voice the thrill and fear that crawled all over his skin when claims like that were made. The self-preservation part, the part that still wasn’t sure that Key would get this happy of an ending, reached over to flick Jonghyun on the forehead. “Idiot, no one does that in Korea.”

“Yeah, yeah,” Jonghyun answered, rubbing his forehead. “We’ll discuss all the details with our planner.”

Without being able to stop it, Key’s jaw dropped open, just as Jonghyun smiled. “Will you stop that? We’re not engaged!” Key whisper yelled.

    “I surrender who I’ve been for who you are

    For nothing makes me stronger than your fragile heart

    If I had only felt how it feels to be yours

    Well I would have known

    What I’ve been living for all along

    What I’ve been living for”

Jonghyun took Key’s hand and smirked a bit, “Have I not proposed yet?” Not really trusting his voice, Kibum chose to shake his head softly. Surely he’d remember something like promising to spend the rest of his life with someone, and hopefully he’d remember the ring. Jonghyun just grinned wider and placed a chaste kiss on Key’s lips. “I could have sworn I did, maybe it was just a vivid dream. But trust me, when I do, you’re gonna be swept off your feet.”

Sure that Jonghyun was chuckling at his dumbfounded expression, Key shook his head to clear his mind. There were a million things that he wanted to ask Jonghyun and a million more things to contemplate upon hearing those words. However, Key simply smiled to himself.

He wasn’t sure what the future would bring, but it’d be pretty wonderful with Jonghyun by his side.

“Though we’re tethered to the story we must tell

When I saw you, well I knew we’d tell it well

With a whisper we will tame the vicious seas

Like a feather bringing kingdoms to their knees”

(The proposal did sweep Kibum off his feet, literally. The puppy that had the ring tied on its collar tangled itself with Key’s legs and brought him down. Hard.)

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Okay, I know. I know I’m a terrible person. I haven’t updated in a really long time. To make up for it, I am doing a little bit of a giveaway, details after my long explanation.
So first of all, I was working. A LOT. There were weeks where I was working all seven days, or if not then I was working overtime like a crazy person. Some people got fired and my boss needed someone who could speak Spanish to be at work. So yeah. It’d make me come home so tired and just.. bleh.
Then, the reason I was working so hard, without complaint, was because I needed money to go to Korea!
I went with my sister and best friend and went for the entire month of July. To say it was incredible is an understatement. We went exploring and did a bunch of awesome touristy things. I won’t drag on, but yeah. I loved it. I also thought of you guys, waiting patiently for my terrible self to update. So I bought a few things just to give away!
I sincerely appreciate that no one has been mean about my lack of update, I know its not a hugely popular story, but I appreciate every single one of you. :)
**Giveaway Info**
So yeah as you can see the story is kinda officially finished, if you’d like to leave a comment on what you’d like to see in the epilogue (I'll be taking these under consideration for the epilogue or possibly for a one shot, idk yet) or just how you liked the fic (or really just leave a comment) that’ll enter you in the giveaway. I’ll do it like last time and draw a name out of a hat lol
I dunno if you guys prefer if I announce the winner when the epilogue is posted or after because the epilogue shouldn’t take too long. It should be posted on the 28th (for my birthday!) Ultimately I'll decide based on the amount of comments, I guess.
Thank you for being patient with me guys <3
