Chapter Sixteen

Misunderstandings

Key looked at his phone for the fourth time in ten minutes. This was honestly getting ridiculous. If he wanted to talk to someone, he could very well send a message first, right? He was a grown man. He picked up his phone and put it back down yet again. It had been this way for a couple of days now.

"Are you thirteen? Is this your first crush?" Nicole asked as she walked into the manager's office. Key was taking a break from the kitchen, and arguing with himself about whether or not to text Jonghyun.

"Shut up, Nicole." He groaned, putting his head down on the desk. She maneuvered around him and the computer.

"I saw something online earlier, that I thought that you might want to see."

"You mean while you were supposed to be working?" he asked, and received a smack to the head as a reply.

"Well it could give you something to talk to Jonghyun about," she teased. Because Key had the incontrollable compulsivity to tell someone when he did something, he had ended up calling Nicole on Sunday night. He knew that he couldn't very well tell anyone else without teasing or ridicule.

Nicole had listened to his excruciatingly specific details about the previous night and patiently waited while Key had his internal debates aloud. He wasn't sure what Saturday night made him and Jonghyun. Were they technically friends now? Were they supposed to never speak to each other again? Key honestly didn't know but he sincerely hoped that it wasn't the latter.

Jonghyun had been easy to talk to and easy to listen to. Even if they weren't romantically involved, Key could see a friendship there. Sodam's remarks at the end of the night reinforced what Key had figured out for himself; Jonghyun was in need of something to keep him stable.

Since leaving on Sunday morning, he had let the events of the night run though his mind over and over. Although they were meant to have more 'fun times' both he and Jonghyun had been satisfied to fall asleep after a languid make-out session. It had been almost tender. The next morning Key left reluctantly, knowing that Danny would be awake and waiting for him as soon as the clock struck 8. He hadn't said anything about getting together again in hopes that Jonghyun would say something. He hadn't.

And now Key had been mildly stressed out about the whole thing. Of course by mildly he meant very very much so.

The beginning of the week had him busy so he had less time to focus on his ridiculous dilemmas with the restaurant keeping busy and Danny taking up the rest of his spare time. Unfortunately, Danny had asked to have a play date with Ah Young today (they had decided that they were best friends after sharing their lunch on Monday), which gave Key about three hours to do absolutely nothing with himself.

Nicole had suggested a casual message would be a good conversation starter, but Key was reluctant. He wasn't sure whether he would be bothering Jonghyun and what the heck was a casual message anyway? He couldn't exactly send 'Hey what's up?' because what does that even mean?

While thinking these things over, Key felt Nicole give him a tap on the head. He lifted his face to the computer screen to see a very handsome, cleaned up version of SooHyun looking back at him. Key smiled at the computer, happy to note that SooHyun's attractive looks had only been enhanced and not completely drowned out by makeup.

Key scrolled down and read the article. "SM Entertainment releases first teaser for new male idol group! Meet SooHyun…" He hadn't realized that the teasers would be released so soon, but this was definitely a good reason to text Jonghyun.

"You love me," Nicole stated, probably looking at the smile on Key's face.

"Only sometimes," Key replied, picking up his phone and actually sending a message this time.

Thirty minutes later, armed with enough food to feed more than ten people, Key approached the SME building. He couldn't exactly say how this happened. At first, the messages between him and Jonghyun were simple conversation, but something sparked in him when he was told that the group had not been eating. It was an instinct for him, as a parent, to make sure that everyone was eating well all the time.

It also gave him something to do.

SInce the restaurant closed at three for a break, Key had enough time to go feed the group and come back in time for the dinner hours. He and the executive chef made the food quickly, and Key found himself in a cab only twenty minutes later.

While sitting in the cab, he started mulling over how ridiculous it was that he was going to barge into the SME practice room and demand a break. Who was he to do that? Hopefully Jonghyun had the authority to back him up on this one. All he had said was okay, and Key put everything into motion.

As he walked up to the building, Key felt a little more than intimidated. The building was sleek and had a quiet intensity about it. He made his way to the reception desk, approaching a very pretty, very severe looking woman.

"Hello, I'm here to see someone?" Key sort of asked. The woman smiled tightly, in the way that you smile at someone who is bothering you but you can't really do anything about it.

"Who are you here to see?" she asked, coolly.

"Kim Jonghyun, he's a producer."

"Yes, I know Mr. Kim. Is he expecting you?"

"Yep!" Key answered, shuffling the bags he was holding in an attempt to pull out his phone to call Jonghyun. The woman at the dest didn't seem like she wanted to be of any assistance, and Key really wanted to get to the practice room before the food got cold.

"Let me page the practice room, just as a security precaution." She said, picking up the phone. Key had to wonder if crazed fans had tried to make their way into the building to see their favorite idol stars. There had to be a reason why they had to have 'security precautions'.

Key gave up looking up for his phone and waited patiently while the woman tried to reach Jonghyun. He had brought enough food for everyone who had been hard at work with the group. Key figured that there were six guys of the group, Jonghyun, a choreographer, a manager, and a stylist. He brought extra in order to eat with them and in case there was someone else involved with the group.

"Kim Kibum?" the lady asked, taking Key's mind off whether he should have brought more silverware.

"Yes, that's me!" he answered, smiling. Jonghyun had not let go of the fact that he knew his name now. It was a silly thing, but it honestly seemed to make Jonghyun extremely happy.

"You can go ahead and take the elevator to the sixth floor, the practice room will be on the right."

"Can I say something?" Key asked, not really wanting an answer. "If you didn't have a permanent judge-y look on your face, you'd look beautiful." He smiled politely and made his way around the front desk.

He made his way to the elevator, and barely managed to push the button for the sixth floor. He wasn't sure if he should just walk in to the room, or knock, or just text Jonghyun. To be totally honest, Key hadn't thought any of this through.

As soon as the elevator doors opened, his worries seemed to dissipate. Jonghyun was there smiling at him, looking like he hadn't had the easiest of days.

Acting completely on impulse, he stepped out of the elevator, put down the bags of food, and hugged Jonghyun. He just looked like he needed some sort of comfort. Key was sure that it was difficult to help train a new rookie group so he wanted to do the little that he could to make him feel better.

The hug lasted a lot longer than a regular hug normally did, but neither guy thought much of it. Key simply hugged Jonghyun tightly, happy that he was returning the hug with the same amount of strength.

'This would have been weird if he didn't hug me back,' Key thought to himself.

"Thanks for coming," Jonghyun said into Key's ear, his voice only a bit louder than a whisper.

"Of course! How could I let you starve those poor guys," Key laughed.

Jonghyun picked up the bags from the floor and led Key to the practice room. Though Key wasn't sure what to expect of a practice room, he definitely didn't expect there to be six boys laying in the center of the room.

"Food's here," Jonghyun said, and all six bodies rose instantaneously. Key took notice of the man in sweatpants and a loose tank top standing near a stereo and assumed that it was the choreographer and another sitting against the mirror looking down at his phone who he assumed was the manager.

"I brought enough for everyone, so please feel free to join us," Key said loudly, hoping to catch everyone's attention. He smiled widely and waved at SooHyun and Junho, who had very different reactions.

SooHyun simply bowed politely. Junho on the other hand walked up to Key and shook his hand, smiling brightly.

"Thank you for the food, Mr. Kim! It know it will be delicious!" he said before walking towards the food.

"Hey guys, why don't you practice introducing yourself? This is my friend Key, who brought you food. You should say hi, and thank him," Jonghyun called out.

After said instruction, SooHyun counted down and the boys introduced themselves in sync. It was adorable to Key, even if that wasn't what they were going for. They wanted to seem very adult, but you could read how eager they were.

They went down the line and introduced themselves carefully.

"Hello, my name is SooHyun and I am Fly High's leader."

"Hello, I am Fly High's maknae, Chanyeol. Please watch over us well!"

"Hello, I am in charge of rap for Fly High and my name is Seung Hyun."

"Hello I am Junho and I am the main vocal for Fly High."

"Hello, I am 4D Hyun Woo, nice to meet you!"

"Hello, I am Fly HIgh's dance machine, JiHoon!"

There was something about watching them all present themselves that obviously made Jonghyun swell with pride. Key had been told that Jonghyun was working with a group, but seeing them together helped him realize how invested he was in these boys. It was also evident how fond the group was of Jonghyun. They all looked at him with smiles as they introduced themselves, instead of who Key assumes was their manager.

Key felt the need to introduce himself as well, since they had done it so professionally, but he didn't know what he would say. Was he supposed to say that he is Jonghyun's friend? Or that he is in charge of ... cooking? He over thinks it, so Jonghyun was the one to introduce him to those who didn't know him.

"Guys, this is Key. When I told him you hadn't really been eating well," he said, looking at the manager and choreographer, "He demanded you get a break and offered to bring food from his restaurant." Key simply waved at everyone.

There was a chorus of thank yous from the boys and the other members of the staff approached Key instead of the food.

"Thank you for the food," the manager said, "My name is Jinyoung." Key took the hand he extended and shook it. Jinyoung looked too young to be in charge of six boys, but his somewhat frazzled expression showed that he was working very hard for them.

"Hello there Key," the choreographer started, "My name is Hyeongseop. Nice to meet you." To be honest, Key was a little thrown off by the look that the choreographer was shooting him. Kibum nodded and Jonghyun pulled him towards the food.

All Key could do was smile as the boys and manager began to serve themselves food. He'd brought a variety of things and by the looks of it, the group was definitely impressed. They were almost salivating as they passed plates around. He thought it was cute that they served the manager, choreographer, and Jonghyun before digging in themselves. Key found himself looking forward to the group's debut more and more. They seemed like such great people, even if SooHyun was a little standoffish with him. He couldn't harbor any ill feeling towards him though, not when he made sure that all of his dongsaengs had plenty of food on their plate before finally sitting down as part of the little circle that they were forming in the center of the room.

The room was quiet due to everyone stuffing their faces. Key had been so focused on watching the Fly High boys that he hadn't really been paying attention to anything else. He completely missed the undressing looks that Hyeongseop was giving him, and the glares that Jonghyun was giving Hyeongseop.

It took a couple of minutes before Key became aware of the people who were sitting near him. "Aren't you gonna eat?" Jonghyun asked.

"I swear I feel full just watching them eat. Is that weird?" Key laughed, nodding his head towards the center of the room. The four 'adults' were sitting at the table in the edge of the room. Backpacks and sweaters had been thrown off to make space for them to eat, but Key wasn't feeling too hungry. In part it was from watching the boys enjoy the food so heartily but it may have also been the fact that he was nervous about seeing Jonghyun again.

"I guess this is how parents feel, no?"

Key froze. Jonghyun didn't know about Danny, right?

"My mom has said that to me before," Jonghyun finished, and Key took a breath. He wasn't sure why he was hiding the truth about Danny, well technically not hiding because he had never said anything and Jonghyun had just jumped to certain conclusions that no one corrected. At least that's what Key convinced himself of. It wasn't harming anyone that Jonghyun was so misguided.

"Yeah." Key swallowed. "How've you been?"

"Swamped, actually. I haven't talked to anyone outside the company till today." Jonghyun explained. "The guys are getting ready for their debut so they demand a lot of my time. I can't complain because I knew that being a producer came with these kinds of situations, but its tiring. And my mom has been nagging me nonstop about some blind date."

Key tried to keep a passive face as Jonghyun talked about a potential blind date. They technically weren't anything, but why did his stomach lurch as soon as Jonghyun mentioned a date?

"I keep telling her that I don't want to go on a blind date, but I swear to you she is hellbent on having grandchildren because she is convinced that she will die without ever having one. Not that she's even sick, in fact she's ridiculously healthy. I think she just wants to marry me off," Jonghyun continued, his cheeks turning the slightest shade of pink.

"Aren't moms supposed to be like that?" Key countered. "She just wants you to be happy, and maybe she thinks you're not really happy living the way you are."

"You're just gonna keep sleeping around, aren't you?" Hyeongseop added to the conversation. Key almost choked on his food at the comment, not only because it was completely unexpected but also because it was completely rude. He had all but forgotten that there were other people present, and so the comment caught him off guard.

"Shut up, Seop." Jonghyun replied weakly. That wasn't like Jonghyun, but Key didn't question it.

"I think you'll find someone who will make you want to cuddle instead of just hooking up, and you'll live happily ever after," Jinyoung offered. "That's what happened to me. It'll be when you least expect it, too."

Jonghyun blushed once again, and Key had to laugh. He had never seen Jonghyun be so bashful, so this side of him was frighteningly adorable to Key. "Yep, and you'll want to wake up next to that person every day, just so they can be the first thing you see in the morning," Jinyoung continued.

Jonghyun was nearly squirming in his seat, "Guys, I get enough of this from my parents, I really don't need it from you."

As if on cue, Jonghyun's phone began vibrating on the table, the caller ID reading 'Mom.' He got up and walked a little away from the table, smiling apologetically at Key.

"So Key, you work at a restaurant?" Hyeongseop questioned.

"Actually, I own one." Key said proudly. "Its kind of a bistro, kind of a cafe. Its pretty awesome if I say so myself."

"Well your food is delicious," Jinyoung complimented.

"Thank you, Jinyoung. How did you become the Fly High manager?" Key probed. As Jinyoung began to explain that he had always had a knack for being organized and persuasive, Key listened attentively as he watched Jonghyun pacing and rubbing his forehead. His mother was sure to be heckling him once again.

"That's awesome. Does your fiance mind that you're going to have to travel with the band?" Key asked, returning to the conversation.

Before Jinyoung could answer, Hyeongseop interrupted. "Are you busy on Friday night?"

"Yes, he is," Jonghyun answered for Key. Key looked back and forth between both men, staring at each other intently. As the room fell silent, Key realized that everyone in the room was focused on what was about to transgress. He also didn't miss the look of anger that was evident on SooHyun's face and the amusement on Jinyoung's.

"Hyungs, don't be weird. You'll scare Key away and he won't bring us food again!" Chanyeol called from his place on the floor. The rest of his group all shot him looks of disbelief and Key laughed to break the tension.

"Don't worry Chanyeol, you can come see me instead!" he cried out. Chanyeol laughed and nodded at the invitation, then continued eating.

"Um, I may have done something stupid," Jonghyun whispered in Key's ear, having taken the seat next to him.

"I have no doubt in your capabilities," Key whispered back, suppressing a giggle.

"I maybe, kinda, definitely told my mom that I was dating someone so that she would get off my back."

"Are you suggesting what I think you're suggesting?"

"Maybe, no. Yes. Please?" Jonghyun pleaded. Key didn't know what to say, he was having a hard enough time breathing evenly. He had never met anyone's parents as a boyfriend before, and now he was being asked to pretend to be in a relationship? This could not go well.

"I don't think that's such a good idea, Jonghyun." He replied. Key didn't know what relationship he and Jonghyun had to begin with, so he didn't want to confuse himself further by adding these shenanigans to the mix.

"I'll make it up to you," Jonghyun said, kiss tongue coming out and flicking Key's earlobe.

"I'm a busy person," he all but groaned out.

"Its one Friday night, just a couple of hours." .

"I have to be at the restaurant."

"It will be fine without you for a night." .

Key couldn't help but think of how inappropriate that was right now. And he also couldnt't help but wonder if Mir or Jinwoon were willing to babysit on Friday.

"I really don't know if I'll be able to." Key said, pulling back from the compromising position they were in. He didn't brave a look to Jinyoung, Hyeongseop, or the Fly High guys because he was sure that they were aware of what transgressed.

"Come on, Key." Jonghyun pouted. That stupid look had more power over Key than he will ever admit, and he was considering if he really wated to get out of this. Another night with Jonghyun was definitely something he would like to experience, and he was sure that it woudn't be that bad.

"I'll think about it."

They left the conversation there, while Jinyoung asked the group if they wanted to show Key a little bit of the performance that they were working on. They complied happily, for the most part.

Their vocals and dance moves brought alive the song that Key originally heard in Jonghyun's apartment, and he couldn't help but be in awe. As they finished their act, Key clapped loudly and whooped.

"I definitely think I'm gonna be your number one fan," he laughed. The guys all bowed thankfully, and Key made them promise to eat at least three meals a day.

As he was taking his leave, Jonghyun walked him to the door of the practice room. In a surprise move, Jonghyun kissed his lips softly and a chorus of 'Oohs' and 'Aahs' erupted from behind them. Key was sure that his face was bright red at both the unexpected kiss and all the witnesses.

"See you Friday," Jonghyun said, and winked in Key's direction.

Key made his way down the elevator and out of the building, and he swears the sun is shining brighter than it has all this week.
