Chapter 17

A Midsummer Dream...

Henry was deep in his sleep when the sound of his phone buzzing in his pocket woke him up. He hurriedly pulled it out and looked over his shoulder to check if it had woken Amber up. But to his relief, she was still sound asleep. Henry looked down at the screen of his phone and saw that Victoria was calling him. Henry slowly, lifted Amber’s arm from his waist and got out of bed before he answered the phone.

“What took you so long to answer the phone?!” Victoria practically yelled before he could even say hello.

“I was sleeping what else? What do you want?” Henry asked as he stepped out of the room not wanting to wake Amber up in the middle of her sleep.

“Do you know what time is it?!” Victoria asked before she sighed.

Henry pulled the phone away from his ear and checked the time. The light blinded him but after blinking several times he made out the numbers. It was 8.30 a.m in the morning.

“It’s only 8.30 Vic.” Henry said as he ran his fingers through his hair and took a seat on the chair at the verandah.

“Only 8.30?! Only?! You were supposed to be here half an hour ago Henry Lau!” Victoria scolded.

“Where?! And for what?” Henry asked unable to recall anything.

“Oh my god Henry! The business plan presentation?! The meeting?! Do you not remember anything?!” She sounded like she was about to explode.

It took him a while to recall and when he finally did, he accidentally curses as he mentally slapped himself. Lately he hadn’t been checking on his schedules as often as he should have. This wasn’t exactly supposed to be a holiday but he wished it was. Henry grunted as he heard Victoria snickering at him.

“Yeah, way to go Henry! Your dad’s keeping them busy at the moment so now go get ready and get your here. ASAP!” Victoria said before she hung up on him.

Henry sighed as he stood up from the seat. He glanced towards the door.  He didn’t have time to leave her a message. But it was alright wouldn’t it? He would still see her after everything was over probably. And never would he imagine that he might never get to see her again after that day. Henry then rushes back to his room and got ready to leave.

Amber didn’t even notice Henry leaving until she finally woke up to notice that she was alone. She clearly remembered sleeping next to him the night before but now he was nowhere to be seen. Amber reached for her phone and it was 9.30 a.m.

“How early did he leave?” Amber asked herself as she scratched her neck still trying to wake up from her sleep.

After a nice hot shower she realized that she was starting to walk around the room as she tried to look for a note somewhere. Hoping that Henry would have probably left her something but sadly she didn’t find anything. For an hour, Amber sat on her bed cross-legged as she dazed off. Her flight was in 4 more hours and she had to leave the hotel in another hour in order to reach the airport just in time for her to check into her flight. Amber sighed before she finally brought herself to start packing her belongings. She didn’t really have much to pack but she was feeling reluctant.

After getting ready, Amber went to the lobby and requested for a taxi. She felt like she was back to the time when she reached Hawaii on the first day with her luggage pulled and her guitar strapped to her back. Amber sighed remembering how she had fought with Henry at the reception which now seemed funny and ridiculous. She was being pretty childish when she first met him. Soon enough, the taxi arrived and Amber hopped on. For the last time, she watched the scenery she witnessed on her first day again and so she recorded them again for keepsake.

Henry somehow felt anxious  and impatient for the day’s schedule to end quickly. He couldn’t stop himself from glancing at his watch to see how long he’d been there. One minute. Two minutes. Three… He kept counting in his mind but was soon disturbed by Victoria nudging him with a dissatisfied look on her face.

“Stop it would you?” Victoria nudged him and so he tried his best to stop but he just couldn’t help himself.

He wasn’t sure the reason behind it but he just seemed to have a really bad feeling. He restlessly twirled his pen between his fingers. Henry was no longer paying attention to what was going on in the room.

“Henry? Do you mind giving your thought on it?” His father said staring at him.

He hadn’t noticed that he’d been summoned until Victoria elbowed him real hard in the arm. He winced but managed to look to where his father sat at the end of the table staring back at him. His stare was filled with dissatisfaction that looked like he could bore a hole into Henry’s scull.

“If you paid enough attention you would probably know what’s going on Henry.” Mr. Lau said with his voice booming into the room.

Everyone was quiet not wanting to intervene between the father and son. Henry sighed as he dropped the pen onto his planner. Mr. Lau ignored his immature son and took his leave signaling that it was the end of the meeting. Everyone in the room too started leaving one by one and Henry wasn’t going to stay any longer. He wasn’t in the mood to care and he just wanted to leave immediately. Shoving his pen into his blazer pocket, he closed the planner shut and started heading for the door. Victoria tried to rush after him.

“Henry Lau! What’s with the rush?” Victoria stopped him before he could reach his car.

“Nothing. No rush.” He said ignoring Victoria’s presence.

“No rush you say? You’ve been antsy all day.” Victoria snapped as she crossed her arm.

“I’ll talk to you later alright? I gotta go.” Henry untangled Victoria’s crossed arm as he made way to his car.

“Henry Lau!” Victoria yelled after him still angry.

Victoria stood there and rolled her eyes as Henry’s car reversed out of his parking spot and sped away. He was hiding something from her and it annoyed the hell out of her. Victoria shook her head and headed back into the building.

The first thing Henry did when he reached the hotel was to knock on Amber’s hotel room. There was no answer upon the first knock so he tried again.

“Amber?” He called as he knocked the door.

Slowly, the door creaked open but what he saw beyond the door was unexpected. An elderly woman in a Hawaiian shirt and oversized skirt that came down to below her knee stood behind the door and stared at him.

“Yes boy? May I help you?” She asked in the most motherly tone.

Henry took a peek at the door to make sure that he wasn’t at the wrong room but he wasn’t wrong. Where did Amber go? His mind went into a panic.

“Sorry, ma’am. Got the wrong room.” Henry apologized real quickly before he started sprinting to the lobby.

The elderly woman watched as Henry sprinted off and slowly, her husband walks up behind her.

“Who was it?” The old man asked.

“I dunno but he reminded me of you when we were young.” The woman chuckled before she walked back into the room.

“What do you mean?!” The old man asked closing the door.

Henry was barely breathing when he reached the reception. He gasped for air as he loosened his necktie that now felt like it was choking him.

“Oh my god sir. Are you alright?” The woman behind the counter looked worried and shocked to see Henry out of breath.

“I’m fine. The girl… room 105. Where’d she go?” Henry said in between breaths.

“Excuse me?” The woman couldn’t quite grasp what was actually happening at the moment.

“Room 105! Where’d she go?!” Henry was speaking at the top of his lungs feeling desperate.

“I’m sorry sir. I don’t quite get what you mean.” She said trying hard not to frown but he could obviously sense that she was annoyed by him.

“Just check where the girl in 105 went will you?!” Henry growled urging her.

“I can’t…” The woman tried to reason herself out of it but Henry didn’t had the patience to listen to what she was going to say.

“Just do it!” Henry glared at her.

The woman sighed and reluctantly turned to her PC and started typing away checking records of their customers.

“She seemed to have checked out this morning. She even requested for a taxi.” She said monotonously.

“Where was she going?” Henry asked.

“I’m sorry sir. I don’t have that information.” She said with a bored tone.

“What is her citizenship?” Henry asked again.

“Sir, I’m sorry but we cannot release that information to you.” The woman answered trying hard to disguise her annoyance but her words were strained and she no longer had a smile.

Henry was getting really agitated and pissed off. He hurriedly lunged forward for the PC and turned it towards him.

“Sir!” The woman yelled as she pulled the PC away from him.

Henry only managed to catch a glimpse of her name. ‘Amber Liu’. Without much thought, Henry hurried to his car and drove off towards the airport. He wasn’t sure if she would be there but he was only working on his intuition. In the car he was starting to regret a lot of things. He ran his fingers through his hair messing it up but he was too frustrated to care. Maybe he should have gotten to know her better. He should have asked so many other questions but he did not. He barely seemed to even know her name.

Henry rushed to the check in counter upon reaching the airport. A man nicely dressed in a suit stood behind the counter with a smile on his face.

“Yes sir? How may I help you?” The man asked with a smile on his face.

“I need to know about one of your passengers.” He said.

“I cannot release information on our passengers to you sir.” The man answered.

“Please! It’s urgent.” Henry rushed the man.

“I’m sorry sir. We are in no authority to release such information. And if you mind, please don’t hold up the line.” The man said calmly.

“Her name’s Amber Liu. I just need to know which flight she’s on.” Henry rushed him.

“Please sir. We cannot do that.” The man shook his head.

“I will have to call security if you continue to hold the line sir.” The man was no longer smiling and he had a stern look on his face.

Henry looked over his shoulder and there was already a line of unsatisfied people trying to check into their flights. The woman behind him was already staring at him with her arms crossed. Feeling defeated, Henry walked away from the counter and ran into the airport hoping he would run into her. He felt ridiculous to be randomly running around. The airport was huge and there was thousands of people in the building itself. This wasn’t some K-drama on television. There was no way he could easily find her.

Amber was about to pass through the departure gates as she looked over her shoulder and looked around as if hoping that she would see someone familiar. But it would’ve been impossible. Amber shook her head and decided that she had to forget. It was only a summer fling. She had to forget. There was no way that they would ever meet again. So she thinks.

Amber gripped her passport and flight ticket tightly as she took a deep breath.

“Passport?” The flight attendant requested as she reached out her hand.

Amber handed it over. After checking her passport and flight ticket, Amber passed the departure gate. Getting on a flight that would bring her miles away from Hawaii and from Henry.

**************************************1 YEAR LATER**********************************

Amber sat at a table outside a coffee shop with earphones on as she listened to her recent guitar composition trying to come out with song lyrics to go along with. In hand she had a notebook and a pen as she continued to scribble some words and off some. Just then, a hand knocked on the table. Amber looked up to see her best friend Shannon.

“Took you long enough.” Amber said placing the notebook on the table.

“Sorry, got stuck in traffic.” Her friend said as she took a seat.

“What do you want? I’ll go order them.” Amber asked.

“Hot coffee would do.” Shannon said smiling.

“But, you don’t drink hot coffee?” Amber asked puzzled.

“I do now. So go. Owh, and one hot latte while you’re at it.” Shannon requested.

“Another latte? Who’s coming?” Amber asked.

“Ugh. No one’s coming Amber. Can’t I just have two cups of coffee?” Shannon said sounding annoyed.

“You’re acting weird.” Amber said crossing her arms as she stared back at her best friend.

“Just go already!” Shannon exclaimed as she pushed Amber to go get their coffee.

Reluctantly, Amber didn’t fight back and went to get their order of coffee. From inside the coffee shop, she couldn’t see their table and that was just how she liked it. She preferred spots that were quiet and out of the sight of many people.

“Here’s your Iced Americano, hot coffee and a hot latte.” The barista mentioned as he placed all the drinks on a tray for her.

“Thanks.” Amber beamed as she paid for the drinks.

When Amber walked back to their table, but she no longer sees her friend Shannon. Instead, the seat she was sitting in previously was replaced by a tall and slim Asian girl. From afar she looked somehow familiar but Amber wasn’t sure. The girl didn’t notice her yet but once she did, she was smiling broadly as she waved her hand towards Amber. Amber looked around in case there wasn’t anyone else but she was alone standing there with the tray in her hand.

“I’m calling for you idiot.” The girl said as she laughed.

Amber slowly walked up and finally realized who she was. She was the girl Victoria that Henry brought to the hotel a year ago. Amber was still feeling puzzled as she stood there staring back at Victoria with the tray of coffee in hand.

“Sit.” Victoria said as she took over the tray and placed them on the table.

“Oooo! Latte!” Victoria exclaimed as she picked up the cup of hot latte.

Amber reluctantly sat down not once her eyes left Victoria. She only met her once but Victoria was a visually stunning girl that she couldn’t easily forget.

“What are you doing here?” Amber asked finally when Victoria didn’t seem like she was about to talk any soon.

“You know, you were really tough to find but a little research here and there, voila!” Victoria said after a sip of her latte grinning proudly back at Amber.

“What do you mean find me?” Amber asked confused by what she meant.

“There are tons of Amber Liu in the world you know.” Victoria sighed shaking her head.

“But after a little bribing and flirting with the hotel management they finally gave me your info. And from there with a little help of social network and Youtube in particular. I finally found you.” Victoria said ignoring Amber’s question.

“I didn’t really get it why he was so obsessed about you.” Victoria said crinkling her nose but instantly went away.

“But I guess he just really likes you.” Victoria smiled and Amber blushed red.

“And I found those videos you uploaded on Youtube. Showed it to him and he instantly knew it was you.” Victoria continued.

“Him?” Amber said slowly, her heart was starting to beat real quick.

The first thought that came to mind was Henry but she didn’t want to be silly about it. She chewed on her lip somehow from the inside of her she was hoping it would be him.

“Henry of course. He was really desperate to find you. And he’s been waiting for a long time to see you again. He was in a pretty bad shape for awhile after you left but he never gave up.” Victoria said as she took another sip of her latte.

“Owh, speaking of the devil. There he is!” Victoria said as she looked right behind Amber.

Amber was nervous but nonetheless turned around and saw Henry standing there at the end of the platform. He was looking back at her with a nervous smile on his face. Amber couldn’t help but smile too. It felt like forever since she last saw him.

“I’ll leave you guys alone. You’re a lucky girl Amber.” Victoria said as she patted Amber’s shoulder and left.

Slowly, Henry walked up to Amber and stood in front of her. Amber looked up at him taking in every essence of him. He didn’t look like he had changed much in the past year. She wasn’t sure if it was a good thing or not but Amber couldn’t help but smile.

“Hi. May I take a seat?” Henry asked nervously.

Amber nodded her head and so Henry sat across her. For a while, they were quiet. Henry didn’t really think that today would happen but it did and now he wasn’t sure what he should say first but he mustered the courage and looked up at Amber. Her hair was now a different shade of colour but despite that he still felt like she was as stunning as he had seen her a year ago.

"No more blondie huh?" Henry blurted out.

"Nope. No more blondie. Got rid of them." Amber answered as she chuckled a little and so Henry grinned.

“Do you mind if we continued with the conversation we last had?” Henry asked.

This time around he was determined to get to know her better. The last conversation they had was in her hotel room, laughing and talking over wine before she got all drunk.

“Of course.” Amber said as she smiled at Henry.
