The Girl In The Sand

Black, White & Red

Li An’s POV

I paused for a second, realizing something wasn’t right. I looked around and Baekhyun had disappeared. I pouted - he was supposed be beside me carrying my bags. I turned around and saw him walking very slowly around the corner with a tired expression projecting from his face, carrying ten shopping bags (each unashamedly mine.) I walked over to him and took two of my bags from him, smiling at him brightly. He looked at me then started to march ahead, before slumping himself on a nearby bench. I strutted over to him, crossing my arms and tapping my toes in impatience. He looked up at me and sighed.

“Li An, how long are we going to be? We have been shopping all day and I am extremely tired. You promised we would practice our new duet,” Baekhyun complained.

“Aish, you always complain when we go shopping. Can’t you just have fun for once? Wasn’t I good to you today? I even bought us lunch - which I never do,”

“...How long are we going to be?”

“Not long, I promise. We will get to practice today don’t worry. We need to go back to my house though so I can get Taylor,”

Baekhyun let out another sigh and stood up. He picked up all the bags he had “nicely” dropped on the floor and headed into the next shop. I was about to follow him when I felt a cold wind go round my body, sending a shiver up my spine. I froze on the spot and turned around. I couldn’t help but have this feeling that I was being watched, which I didn’t like in the slightest. I scanned the mall quickly before hearing Baekhyun shouting my name. I looked back over to him, hesitating whether to him or not. I ran over to him and wrapped my arms around his arm. He looked down at me and kissed me gently on the head.

“What is it?”

“Oppa, did you feel that cold wind a second ago?”

“No, what cold wind? Maybe you were close to a window?”

“Maybe... but now I can’t help have the feeling that someone is watching us...”

“Li An, people watch us everyday because we are number one and it doesn’t bother you then.”

“Yeh but-”

“No buts! Let’s just get finished with your shopping,”

I was about to have a total fit. Baekhyun had cut me off mid-sentence and there is nothing I hate more than that, apart from being told to be quiet. I furrowed my eyebrows and just decided to pass it off and excuse myself to go to the toilet. Baekhyun said he was going to get us some fries to munch on while I did my business. I didn’t want him to go though, despite what he just did.  I wanted him to at least walk me to the bathroom. I would’ve felt safer then. Even if the mall was absolutely packed and I had to pretty much barge past people if they didn’t move out the way, the place I was walking down was completely empty. This was very strange. I felt the cold wind again but this time it was stronger.  I turned around to see if anything was there but nothing was there. I took a deep breath and walked further along the corridor. I started to walk faster and then I started to run, until I banged heavily into something. For the first time I can remember I prayed that I had banged into Sehun once again, but when I looked up it wasn’t him. It was someone completely different. My instincts told me to run so I got up and sprinted towards the main shopping area. But by the time I reached the end of the hallway he was there again. He charged at me and before I could blink I was on the floor. Everything was fuzzy and I could see a white light.

“Baekhyun... please...” I whimpered, hoping he would hear me before everything faded to black.

When I awoke I wasn’t at the mall.

I looked around. I was somewhere sandy. Where was I? This place was so familiar to me, but I knew I had never been there before. I stood and started to look around to see if I could figure out where I was. It wasn’t long before I came across a woman. She was wearing a white hooded cloak, her back facing me. I ran towards her yelling, but she didn’t seem to hear me. She didn’t even acknowledge me. When I reached her I placed my hand on her shoulder. She turned her head slightly, but the hood stopped me from seeing her face. It was then I realised she wasn’t responding to me, but had turned her head for something else. I looked in the same direction and saw a shape in the distance. She began to walk towards it and I decided to follow her. If anyone knew what this place was or how to navigate around it, she was as good a bet as any. She kept walking until the shape in the distance slowly revealed itself to be a pyramid. She paused and looked around. Was that... crying I could hear? Could she hear it too? I could see her hesitate before murmuring some words - it sounded like some sort of chant.

The cold wind I had felt back in the mall returned and as it came past me it lifted up the sand, revealing a small entrance in the side of the pyramid. The woman approached it, and after yet another moment of hesitation went in. I followed her, and inside was a young girl, probably no more than 8, maybe even younger. She had been the source of the cries. I felt a sharp pain go through my head and I couldn’t help but think the little girl was familiar. Who was she? What was more disturbing was that she was covered in blood.

The woman lent down to the girl’s height and murmured something in her ear, before gently taking her into her arms. Suddenly all I could hear was murmuring. It was driving me insane. Who was that girl? What was this place? Why did I know them? I started to walk around the woman try to see who she was, but as I finally reached the front of her I could suddenly hear Baekhyun’s voice and everything faded away once again.

My eyes fluttered open and I saw Baekhyun in front of me, I looked around and it seemed like the whole shopping mall was around me. I looked back at Baekhyun who looked as if he had been crying.

“Li An! I was so worried! You wouldn’t wake up! I thought you were dead!”

I stayed silent and sat up and noticed Sehun was standing behind Baekhyun.

“...Sehun?” I rasped, my throat feeling like the sand of the desert I had just been in had been poured down it.

“Sehun was the one that found you. I guess... I owe him a lot,” Baekhyun smiled at me.

Sehun stared at me blankly and I managed to force a smile. I was really tired. Baekhyun would probably make me go home and rest or take me to his house to sleep since it was closer to the mall, but I wanted to tell Alix everything. I don’t know what but something was telling me I could trust her with this, but not anyone else. Come to think of it, I hadn’t seen her since she made me go on a tour with Sehun. I was going to tell her what happened then, but now I needed to tell her no matter what. That I was sure of.
