The End
Pretending Not To LoveA/N I'm extremely sorry for the super duper late update. Studies, lack of motivation, writer's block, other personal things etc played some part in my long hiatus. Anyway, here's the final chapter. I just hope you all enjoy reading it.
No One’s POV:
A few months passed by since Joo Eun and Sooyoon spent a weekend together during his military service. Although they did get to meet each other briefly once or twice after that whenever Sooyoon came over on his holidays to spend time with his family.
On the other days, Joo Eun was busy, looking for jobs, applying for them and attending interviews. Before they knew it, it was already the day of Sooyoon’s discharge from the military.
Joo Eun woke up early in the morning, rummaged through her wardrobe for an hour to find a dress that she felt looked good on her, then applied some makeup and got ready a few minutes before their decided pickup time.
As she was looking for her shoes, James walked into their kitchen and was getting his breakfast ready. “Are you leaving? How strange of you to get ready on time,” he teased his sister.
“Yeah, Soohwan oppa asked me to come down around this time. His parents are coming along too. So just thought of maintaining the first impression,” she simply shrugged her shoulders while he rolled his eyes. “Why aren’t you coming?”
“As I told you already, we have an important staff meeting today. So Moon and I cannot come.”
“What? Even Moon isn’t coming?” she overreacted.
“Aren’t you going to receive your boyfriend? Why do you want Moon there then?”
“It’d be awkward to be alone with his parents. I haven’t been introduced to them officially yet. So I’m a bit nervous too. You’ll also know what I am talking about when you get yourself a girlfriend.”
“Won’t your Soohwan oppa be there as well? Looked like you both got along well the past two years,” he ignored her earlier comment.
She laughed out loud at his ridiculous teasing, “He’s Sooyoon’s brother. We got close because he was keeping me up-to-date about Sooyoon’s wellbeing.”
“Do you even have time to reply to my teasing?” he raised his eyebrows.
“Aha! So you finally accept that you were teasing me?” she initially blurted out, pointing at him before she realized what he said and looked at her watch, “Oh my! I’ll deal with your nonsense later. I gotta go.” She rushed out the door.
She was breathless by the time she reached Soohwan who was waiting by his car. “Are you alright?” he asked, looking at her panting.
“I thought I’m running late. So I ran here but otherwise, I’m alright. Soohwan oppa, do we have time to make a small stop on the way?” she asked him as he started the car while he looked at her questioningly, “I’d like to buy some flowers for Sooyoon.”
“Well,” he glanced at his watch, “I could drop you by this flower shop on the way to my parents and then pick you up again on the way back.”
He dropped her in front of a flower shop just like he said and drove away. She walked into the shop and ordered the bouquet and then walked around the shop, looking around at the various plants with flowers for a few minutes while the shopkeeper wrapped her bouquet.
She paid the shopkeeper when it got ready and left the shop, then crossed the road and waited at the spot where Soohwan asked her to wait. Soon after, his car stopped nearby and she got in after greeting Sooyoon’s parents who were seated in the backseat.
She remained silent for the entire ride, almost as if she didn’t exist there. When they reached the camp, there was still some time left for Sooyoon to come out of the camp.
So they waited along with a few others who have come to receive others getting discharged as well. And as for Sooyoon, his family and Joo Eun wasn’t the only one waiting. Min Hye Jin was already there with another male friend of Sooyoon’s.
“Hey,” the guy waved at Joo Eun upon seeing her as she walked over to him while Hye Jin ignored her presence.
As they talked about each other’s wellbeing and stuff, she asked him, “What are you doing here oppa?”
He glanced at Hye Jin once before leaning in closer to Joo Eun and whispered, “She said she didn’t have a ride and dragged me here,” he sighed.
“And you got dragged here coz you like her, don’t you?” she asked her while he fidgeted around awkwardly.
Their conversation cut short when the camp’s gate opened and the discharged soldiers started walking out. Joo Eun watched the tearful reunion of those soldiers with their family, friends or loved ones and finally saw Sooyoon walking towards them.
Although she wanted to storm right into his arms, she still stopped a few feet behind his family, letting them all pull him into a tight embrace one after the other. After a few minutes being with his family, he excused himself and started walking towards Joo Eun.
Her feet suddenly wouldn’t move, so she just stood there smiling widely, waiting for him to reach her any moment. However, right before that, someone came in between and hugged him tightly.
Joo Eun was so taken aback that she simply stared at the interrupter for a moment before she looked at Sooyoon questioningly while he started panicking at her reaction, nearly pulling his hand above his shoulder level to show that the hug wasn’t mutual.
“Um, Hye Jin,” he called out to her awkwardly while she showed no response.
After what looked like an eternity to Joo Eun, she let go of him, earning a mild sigh in relief from him. He quickly walked towards Joo Eun while wondering how to explain her this bizarre situation.
“Welcome back,” she handed over the bouquet to him, before wrapping her hands around his neck and pulling him down for a kiss.
It was just a quick kiss, more like a peck and although she smiled after letting him go, he knew things weren’t as normal as it seemed. But when he opened his mouth to talk about it, she casually reminded him of the presence of his parents, making him back off.
Sooyoon’s parents slowly ushered them to leave since Sooyoon might be tired and all, and as they all made their way towards the parking lot, Joo Eun turned towards the guy who accompanied Hye Jin and asked, “Oppa, you drove here, didn’t you?” he nodded, “then could I hitch a ride home? Or you could even drop me somewhere along the way.”
He looked taken aback by the request and instantly stared at Sooyoon as a reflex. “What? Why would he do that?” Sooyoon questioned.
“Your parents have come too. So if I drive back with you, it would be crowded. Don’t you think so? And I don’t want to make your parents discomforted,” she said leaving him speechless for a moment, then she turned to that friend, “Can’t you, oppa?”
He squirmed a little, feeling helpless being caught in the lover’s quarrel while Sooyoon looked like he was lost in thoughts for a moment before he turned towards his parents, “Mom, I’d see you later for lunch. I’ll ride with my friends now,” he kissed her cheeks and walked away before his mom could even object.
“C’mon, let’s go,” he ushered everyone, putting his arm around Joo Eun’s shoulder, which she casually pushed away. “By the way, hyung, I didn’t expect to see you here today,” he spoke to the other guy while attempting to wrap his arm around Joo Eun again.
“Well! It just happened,” the guy replied with a shrug, before unlocking his car.
“Hye Jin-ah, mind sitting in the front?” Sooyoon asked her while she shot him a ‘why me?’ look, “Fine, I’ll sit in the front. Hope you two will remain in one piece at the end of the ride,” he shrugged his shoulder and opened the front door.
Hye Jin took a glance at Joo Eun who looked like she was thirsty for some blood, “Yah! Get lost, that’s my seat,” she grumbled and pulled away Sooyoon by his collar, before getting into the passenger seat while he smiled and got in the back seat beside Joo Eun.
The two remained silent for rest of the ride, mostly because Joo Eun was hell-bent on ignoring Sooyoon. When their friend dropped them in front of their apartment building, Joo Eun quickly thanked him for the ride and stormed inside.
However, she wasn’t quick enough as Sooyoon caught up to her even before she reached the elevator. He scooped her up and threw her over his shoulder before getting into the elevator which just dinged open in front of them.
“Yah Kim Sooyoon! Let me down!” she pounded on his back, “Yoonie-ah, let me down. My dress –” she tried reasoning with him with a calm tone but when nothing worked, “Aish!” she cursed, still struggling to escape from his hold.
He chuckled at her helpless attempt and the lift halted right that moment on a floor which was not theirs, making him quickly lower her to the floor but he still held her close to him when he saw her stumble a bit, while her face was all flushed.
They greeted the elderly woman who got in and remained silent until the elevator stopped again but this time on their floor. They once again bowed to the elderly woman and got out. Although he was still holding her and was walking along with her to her apartment, she said nothing.
As soon as they got into the house, she simply ignored his presence and made her way to her bedroom while he continued to follow her. “Eunnie-ah, what are you upset about?” she ignored him and sat down on the bed, “is this about the hug earlier?”
She still remained silent but her pout deepened. “Eunnie-ah,” he placed his military cap on top of her head, before kneeling down and taking her hands in his, “I didn’t know she would do something crazy like that. I’m sorry, I’ll make sure she wouldn’t do anything of this sort again. But you do know that it’s not my fault right?”
She still remained silent for a moment before breaking it with a heavy sigh, “Yes I know.”
“Then why are you still mad at me?” he gently held her face and forced her to look at him.
Her face slowly turned crimson, “I’m not mad at you. I mean I did get mad at you both initially but later when I realized I was just being childish and overreacting, I’m just embarrassed of myself.”
He held back the chuckle and leaned in, pressed his lips on hers. “I love you,” he whispered against her lips while she slowly gave in to the kiss and wrapped her arms around his neck, “I love you too,” she whispered back.
He flopped down on the bed and pulled her to his side. “Shouldn’t you go see your family? I mean you left just like that.”
He looked at the time, “Yeah, I should. But just let me be like this for some more time. It’s been ages.” He snuggled closer.
A few minutes later, he started sleeping with her still in his arms while she stayed still until it was lu
