Chapter 15

HEARTBEAT

"Jiayu, wake up. Wake up." She heard a gentle voice calling her. For a moment she thought she heard Kris' voice and she got up abruptly.

"Yifan!" she breathed out, turning to her right, only to see Luhan's face. She closed her eyes.

"I thought it was Yifan."

If she hadn't closed her eyes, she would have seen that the smile Luhan had on his face was now gone. That wasn't the first time she called him Yifan. Every morning he would come to her room to wake her up, and every time she would think of him as Yifan. Luhan couldn't help but feel sad and somehow envious.

Luhan was always the object of other people's envy, not the envious one. He had money, good looks, a charming personality, basically everything. But now he was the envious one. He envied Kris for having Jiayu. No, he didn't want her for himself, he just wanted someone to love him the way Jiayu loved Kris, that was all. He admired how she patiently waited for him, how she thought of him all the time.

"Jiayu, are you alright?" he asked quietly. She briefly nodded. "Can I talk to you about something?"

She was surprized a bit that he didn't try to do some funny things to cheer her up. His voice was serious. The first thing on her mind was Kris. Maybe something bad happened.

Luhan sat on the edge of the bed. "Jiayu, how much do you love Yifan?" he asked.

"I would die for him", she said. Luhan's eyes widened at her answer. "He is the reason my heart is beating. If it wasn't for him, my heart would be beating, but not in my body. It would be in the body of that gangster. Yifan gave me a second chance, a chance to live a new life. That's why I would die to save him from anything, I would return the favour."

Luhan covered his face with his hands in attempt to hide his tears, but Jiayu noticed them.

"Why are you crying?" she asked multiple times, but he remained silent. Only sobs could be heard.

He took a deep breath and wiped his tears harshly. "I...I am so sad, Jiayu. Because I have no one."

Jiayu stared at him. Why was he saying that? That wasn't Luhan she knew. She always thought of him as an optimist, a person who was always bright and cheerful. That was how he presented himself. But the Luhan who was now in front of her wasn't like that at all.

"I have no one to love me. Like you love Yifan."

"But Luhan, there is no reason to cry. I am sure that you will find someone who will love you", she said, trying to make him feel better. She hated seeing people sad.

"When will I find that person, when? I'm thirty two years old, Jiayu. My parents are urging me to get married and start a family and I really want to do that, but I can't. How can I do that when I can't find someone who will love me, just me, not my money?"

She shook her head at his words. "You must not think that way. I'm sure you will find someone. You can never know when will that happen."

He wiped more tears who were streaming down his face. "When will that happen?"

Jiayu chuckled. "Maybe today, Luhan. Maybe today you will meet the love of your life. You never know."

"Hurry up Lu-ge, I have to get there first!"

He rolled his eyes and sped up.

"I can't miss the opening of the new shop, you know", his sister said, putting on her make up.

"I can't believe you taught me into this", he said, a pout forming on his lips. "I have a day off and instead of doing something useful I'm going with you to the opening of a new clothes shop."

His sister chuckled. "Don't be like that. You will get to spend some quality time with me. You are always busy with your work."

The rest of the ride was filled with Luhan's grumbling. When they arrived in front of the mall, his sister literally jumped out of the car and ran to the shop.

Luhan barely caught up with her.

"Lu-ge, are you going to come in with me or  wait in front?" she asked.

"I'm going in, of course."

She covered her cheeks to hide her blush. "But it's a lingerie shop, Lu-ge", she said shyly.

His eyes widened. "Then I'm not going." She spun on her heels and left, a mischievous smile appearing on her lips. Her plan worked. She managed to get him to go outside instead of staying home. She hoped he would walk around and meet new people.

"Hey, why are you buying lingerie?!" he shouted to her after he fully realised what she said, but it was already too late. She already got into the shop and he didn't want to come after her.

He leaned on the wall; he decided to wait for her. After a few minutes he realised that he wasn't the only one waiting. Two meters away from him stood a girl, equally leaned on the wall as he was. She was playing with her keyrings and she seemed to be really bored. He caught himself staring at her side profile and when she directed her eyes to him, he looked away, feeling embarrassed. He looked at her again and this time she smiled to him for a moment and then returned to play with her keys.

Luhan was somehow disappointed that she looked away from him. But she smiled to him, she smiled and he suddenly wished to see that smile again. Her phone rang and she quickly took it out of her bag and amswered it. He couldn't help but to eavesdrop  on her conversation so he moved a few steps towards her.

"I'm with my sister now, I can't come", she said. "I'll call you as soon as she gets out of that shop, okay?"

"Okay, I'll see you later", she said and hung up. She put her phone back in her bag and sighed. Her gaze wandered over the multiple shops in front of her and landed on Luhan. Their eyes locked for a few moments and then she looked away. Luhan's mind was in chaos after their brief eye contact. His breathing sped up and he had to take in a few deep breaths to calm down.

It's now or never, Luhan, you have to approach her. He could have sworn that he heard a voice behind him saying that. His legs moved on their own, not listening to him. He found himself standing right next to the girl, their arms almost touching.

"Hi", he said and his voice sounded so weak that he immediately regretted approaching her. He didn't want to sound like a weak.

"Hi", she replied rather confused.

"Are you...uhm...waiting for someone?" he said, and he knew he sounded so stupid. Why couldn't he be his usual charming self like he was around other girls? She made him feel confused and insecure.

She chuckled lightly, noticing how nervous he was. "Yes, I'm waiting for my sister to get out of that shop. I think it will take her forever to get out of there."

Luhan's face perked up. "I'm waiting for my sister, too. You're not going shopping with her?"

She chuckled again. "I'm not really into shopping. I only buy things I really need. I don't need fifteen pairs of shoes like my sister."

"My sister is addicted to shopping", he said. "I have a day off today, but she managed to drag me here."

She turned to him and smiled."You are a good brother then."

Was that a compliment? he thought. It is! It is! What should I do?

"Since our sisters are going to stay in there forever, what do you say that we go and find a place to sit? A coffee shop maybe?" he asked, praying that she would say yes.

A blush crept on her cheeks and she nodded. "Alright."

Luhan wanted to jump from all the happiness he felt, but he managed to hold it in. A wide grin appeared on his face.

"My name is Luhan", he said.

"I'm Linhua."

Jiayu finished with her lunch and decided to go to bed. Luhan and his sister went outside and she was bored.

She climbed up the stairs lazily and opened the door of her room.

"Yifan!" she exclaimed when she saw him standing in the middle of the room, his arms spread and ready to hug her.

She ran to his embrace and he held onto her strongly, kissing the top of her head, her forehead and reaching to her lips.

"You are alive, Yifan", she said through tears.

"I am", he whispered and planted soft kisses all over her face.

"I really missed you", she said. "I was so worried about you."

He grinned and picked her up, placing her on the bed. She was rubbing her eyes to stop the tears, when he got on top of her.

"We can't do it here, Yifan", she scolded him. He grinned widely and placed himself next to her, wrapping her in a strong embrace.

"It's cuddling time now", he said. "We'll leave other things for later."
