Tiffany passed the school bus as she to the street. She found her sister sitting on the bench with a book on her hand. “Juhyun-ah” she called.

The girl turned to her and smiled. “Unnie!!”

“Hey, How was school today?”

She smiled. “We had a library, which was awesome, but then Yoongie and Rose got into an argument and we had to go back to class early.”

Tiffany had to suppress a smile. “I’m sorry your time got cut short.”

“It’s okay. I already had my three books and when we got back to the room, Ms. Song let us read for a while. I just don’t get why kids have to be so difficult.”

Tiffany snickered, doing her best to cover it up with a cough. “We don’t call other people difficult.”

Seohyun makes a sigh. “I know. But they were fighting about this book I read in like a year ago.”

She said the last word with such disdain. “I guess they can’t all be voracious readers like you.”

“Be what?” Seohyun had to scrunch her eyebrow, asking her question.

“Voracious. It means eager, like not being able to get enough of something,” “Voracious.” Having an intellectual sister could be challenging, but she loved that she could almost always distract her by sliding a new word into a sentence. “People use it to talk about wanting lots of food in particular. She had a voracious appetite.”

Seohyun nodded. “I have a voracious appetite for beansprout.”

She smiled. “Indeed you do. Maybe we can go out to beansprout this weekend.”

“Yes!” Seohyun jumped around as she’d just won the lottery.

“Tonight, however, is eggplant. How about I get started on that while you do your homework?”

Seohyun keep her book in her bag and walked past her. “Okay. I have a pretty voracious appetite for that, too, especially if there are mushroom and oyster sauce.”

“I think that could be arranged. Do you want to do your homework at the table?”

Seohyun shrugged, as though her question was odd, but not unpalatable. “Sure.”

Once their home she plopped her backpack on the table and took out a pencil and a folder of perfectly neat pieces of paper. Unlike her, who remained organized through discipline, the kid had a natural tendency to be tidy—one of the traits she got from their mother. Along with her eyes and her height. “Let me know if you need any help.”

“Thanks, Unnie, but it’s all pretty basic.”

Tiffany pulled out ingredients for their dinner, stealing glances at her while she worked. When she brought their plates to the table, she’d finished everything and was reading one of her library books. She looked over her math problems and the worksheet of spelling words, along with her attempt to draw a cell and all its parts. She expected the first two to be flawless, but the quality of the drawing caught her off guard. “This is really good.”

“Cells are so cool. We watched a video of them splitting and then we got to look at real ones under a microscope.”

“I always thought biology was pretty cool, too.” Maybe she shouldn’t admit it, but she was more impressed with the artistic ability. “You didn’t trace this?”

She takes a spoonful of rice and shook her head. “I used the picture on the sheet as a guide.”

They finished eating and Seohyun helped her with the dishes. Her sister is very enthusiastic about doing chores, that’s why she didn’t need to force the younger girl. Mostly. When they were done, she looked at her hopefully. “Do you want to play chess?”

“How about you take a bath, then we play one game before bed?”

“Yey!.” Tiffany smiled this small gestured reminded her that her sister was still a kid.

Tiffany finished wiping the counters, pulled out the chess set, and sat at the table. When Seohyun emerged, her hair was wet and she wore a set of kero kero pajamas. All the maturity, all the seriousness that so often made her seem older than she was, vanished. At that moment, she remained a little girl, her sister.

They set up the game and began. She was at the stage where she didn’t put all her attention into beating her sister but also didn’t deliberately let her win. In that scenario, Seohyun won at least half the time, which she considered quite impressive. This time, she beat the younger girl and let her talk her into a rematch. When Seohyun took the second game fair and square, Seohyun pushed for a tie-breaker.

“Bring it on.”

“Anyway Unnie, where is Jessica Unnie? Isn’t she coming today?”

“Hmm, now that you’ve asked, actually she told me that she might be home late as she needs to take some stuff at their house first before coming here.”

And as in on cue they hear the door open. “Jessie? Is that you?” Tiffany called out.

“Hi, Sica Unnie,”

“Hey, Tiff’ Hey Kiddo’’.

Tiffany and Seohyun stop playing to see the latter. “Hey, you okay?” Tiffany asked worriedly as soon as she saw her best friend with a worried look.

Jessica slams herself at the chair next to Tiffany. “I’m fine, it’s just that those two old folks decided to celebrate their anniversary in Paris. I mean they’re not like on their 20’s to act like some newlyweds.”

Tiffany chuckles. “Come on Jess’ for sure Auntie and Uncle just wanted to celebrate it with you and Kris.”

“I know! But why do we have to go to Paris? They could celebrate it here. I don’t want to travel that long!”

Tiffany just laughs.

“I know!! You two need to come with us! To make the travel bearable. I’ll book you a flight now. Will go the day after tomorrow.”

“What!! No! It’s your family’s affair and we can’t join you for that.”

“Am I hearing this from you? Tiff’ we are a family. So you’re coming with us too.”

“Jessie, you know what I mean. It’s not that I’m not considering you as a family, don’t think it that way, kay? And another thing, the day after tomorrow is Seohyun’s intercultural play. She can’t miss that day as she is their class representative, remember?”

Jessica made a deep sigh “I knew it’ it’s not the right day to travel! I’ll speak to Mum and rebook my flight so we could attend Seohyun’s play and then we can follow them there.”

“Jessie..please don’t do that. It’s Uncle and Auntie’s special day, they need you to be there. And don’t worry about us, it will be fine here.”

“But—

“No, but, please..come on. Give it to them. I’m sure they’re looking forward to that day.”

Jessica still looks dejected. “I never win on you.”

Tiffany smile.

“Anyway, you aren’t going to that party’ right.”

“Huh’ Oh yeah, I almost forgot..it’s the same day of Seohyun’s cultural play and the same day of your travel. Hmm..then I can’t really go.”

“Great. That party is just for looser.”

“Party? I heard a party is fun.” Seohyun finally commented after listening to the older girl's conversation.

“And where did you hear that?”

“Hmm..Rose said that last time they went to a party and she had so much fun. I think you should go to that party,” she declared.

Tiffany couldn’t help but chuckle. “Is that so?”

“Hmm’ It’s good to mix things up, Unnie.”

“Mix things up?”

“Yeah. You know, do something different.”

“Where did you learn that phrase?”

“Mrs. Song used it at music class last week. She said that having a ritual is important, but it’s also important to mix things up so you don’t get bored or lazy. Then we did class all out of order.”
