When did I ever back out on you? | Pt I
The Charm of a GoddessShe watched him, from the benches, as he played soccer seriously. She didn't even like or have the slightest interest in soccer. It was a boring sport if you asked her. She was more of a basketball fan.
“He's going to melt if you keep staring at him that way,” Chaerin said casually, not taking her eyes off Suho
“Don't say stuff like that aloud,” blushed Dara while looking at her best friend
“Well it's true,”
“Well I could say the same for you,” Dara looked at Suho
“Suho and I are a different story,” Chaerin glanced at Dara
“You're so brave for confessing,” sighed Dara
“I'm shocked Seunghyun doesn't know by now that you like him, or at least he acts like he doesn't know,” Chaerin didn't want the topic to be moved to her.
Chaerin knew Dara would try to shift the topic.
“Seunghyun and I, we've been friends for a long time. I think that's why,” explained Dara
“Or Seunghyun's just stupid,”
“You know he isn't,”
“Clueless, stupid, same thing. Everyone practically knows you have the hots for him,”
“Chaerin!” gasped Dara, “Don't say it like that,”
“Yah, I doubt that no one has told him that yet,”
“You're no help,” frowned Dara
“I don't know why you hold on to him, Dara,” Chaerin's tone changed, “We both know his ways,”
“He's a good guy,”
“He's a good friend, but he's not a good boyfriend.”
Dara remained silent. She couldn't defend Seunghyun any longer because it was true. He changed girlfriends so easily as if it was like changing clothes.
“He just hasn't been with the right girl,” Dara spoke
“You mean you?” Chaerin looked at her with a worried look.
Chaerin adored Dara like they were family, and seeing Dara hurt was the last thing she wanted. She was also friends with Seunghyun but she knew better than Dara. She could compartmentalize, she could look at things objectively. Before Chaerin could speak again, you could hear a boy yelling for them.
“Chaerin! Dara!” it was Suho running up the benches.
Without realizing it, the soccer game had ended.
“Did you see my last goal?” Suho asked enthusiastically
“I'm sorry. We missed it,” Chaerin answered honestly
“What?” his shoulder dropped in disappointment
“No we didn't! I was recording your guys' game,” Dara pointed to her camera located a few benches below them
“As expected of our number one fan,” Suho gave her a thumbs up
“You make me look like a bad girlfriend,” joked Chaerin
“Aigoo,” Dara elbowed her
“Where's Seunghyun?” Chaerin asked her boyfriend
“He said he'll start the car and wait for us there. Let's go before he leaves us,” Suho offered Chaerin his hand.
Dara envied Chaerin during little moments like those. Suho was always such a gentleman, but Dara observed how he became more gentle and caring towards Chaerin after realizing his feelings for her. When will my day come? Dara would wonder.
“I'll get your camera for you,” Suho volunteered
“Thank you,” Dara smiled at him.
The trio made their way to the parking lot, only to find Seunghyun's car with no Seunghyun inside.
“Where'd he go?” Suho scanned the parking lot for any signs of him
“I'm back here,” they heard Seunghyun's deep voice.
Before the three could go to the back of the car, Seunghyun showed himself. Dara's cheeks immediately burned up at the sight of him. She bit the inside of her cheeks and looked at Chaerin. Chaerin couldn't help but smirk at the sight of Dara getting flustered due to a shirtless Seunghyun.
“I was just changing,” Seunghyun explained as he put on a new t-shirt, “The car's not locked, you guys can go on in while I close this.”
Suho opened the door to the passenger seat and signaled Dara to enter.
“Why not you?” whispered Dara
“I'm exhausted. I might fall asleep so I want to sit by Chae,” he replied.
Dara fidgeted in her seat. She's never had the opportunity to sit in the passenger seat all these years. The passenger seat was Suho's designated spot to keep Seunghyun awake during their drives while Chaerin and her were always at the back. Chaerin easily falls asleep in long drives and so Dara would usually fall asleep as well since she couldn't keep up with the boy talk.
“Oh hey,” Seunghyun greeted Dara, “I'm guessing Suho is going to knock out,” he chuckled
“Yeah, you tired him out,”
“Yeah! Go easy next time man,” Suho whined making Chaerin laugh
“We needed to step up our game,” he said while turning on the engine
“Let's just sleep,” Chaerin snuggled to Suho
“Good idea,” yawned Suho
“You really love soccer,” Dara didn't want her conversation with Seunghyun to die
“As much as you love acting,” he winked at her
Why must he do things like that? She could feel her heartbeat raise.
“How's that going by the way?”
“Huh?”
“You're trying out for Broadway stuff, ain't you?”
He remembers. I only mentioned it once, thought Dara.
“Wow, you remember,”
“Of course, I do. Why wouldn't I? I know that's important to you,” he gave her a tender look
“I auditioned last week for Snow White. I got a call back which I will go to tomorrow,”
“That's great, Dar,” he ruffled her hair with his right hand
“Careful,” Dara told him
“I'm a pro at driving. Don't worry,”
“Thanks for asking. How's your art exhibit?”
“It's also doing great. You haven't come to visit it. I'm going to hold it against you, ya know,” he was teasing
“Maybe tomorrow, I will,”
“Maybe? Come on, Dar,” his eyebrows furrowed
“I have my callback tomorrow, remember,”
“You know what, let me pick you up. What time is your callback?”
“It's at 2 in the afternoon,”
“You have plenty of time to come see my exhibit then,”
“I'm just nervous. I want to rehearse in the morning before I get there,”
“You know what, let me pick you up and be there with you for your callback. Then we'll spend the rest of the day together.”
Dara became speechless at his offer. Sure Dara and him have been friends for practically a decade now but never had they spent one on one quality time.
“I can't believe one of my best friends haven't come see my exhibit. You're hurting my feelings, Dar.”
They were at a halt on a stoplight. Seunghyun looked at Dara and had a frown plastered on his face.
“How can I say no to that face?” she smiled
“Yes!” Seunghyun cheered while holding Dara's hand, “Finally,” he laughed.
A honk startled Dara making Seunghyun realize the stoplight had turned green.
“Don't back out on me, Dar,”
“When did I ever back out on you?”
Seunghyun had no reply but an enormous smile formed on his lips.
