Not Hungry Enough
A young male slowly walked alongside a beautiful wolf, their feet and paws dragging along the forest floor. They were thin and weak; they were hungry.
The young male gently patted the wolf's head, feeling the soft fur brushing his fingers. He understood why the wolf suddenly snarled and side-stepped away from him. They were hungry; it would be easy an easy task for the wolf to devour the young man. Yet, the wolf remained by his side as the hunger slowly ate them.
The wolf had been shunned and abandoned by his pack because of a broken leg. His pack only required the fittest and best and a wolf with a limp simply did not belong. They justified their actions, saying they had warned the wolf beforehand about switching between the human and wolf forms, but the wolf had disobeyed. The wolf had thrown away his life for that single young man that saved him. His pack had warned him about the human species, that they were deadly and only aimed to kill wolves such as themselves, but the wolf paid no heed. No human ventured out that far into the forest -- it was too dangerous and frightening.
The human had fled to the thick forest to escape the raiders that set his village on fire. He knew even the toughest and savage of humans dared not enter too deep into the forest. The young male would rather die from a wild beast than be taken and sold as a slave. He had come across an unconscious and young man with a strange scar on his chest. Not realizing the unconscious man's true identity, the young male had clothed and nursed him back to health with what little supplies he had and the knowledge of the plants around them.
Even when the weak young man's eyes randomly flashed red, the healthy young man stayed by the stranger's side. The two became acquaintances and, soon, friends.
Then one day the stranger was gone, replaced by a wolf with dark brown fur, but the human understood, he understood it was the young man because of the eyes. The eyes that were red and filled with the familiar kindness the stranger had looked at him with.
With nowhere to go and no one but each other, the human and the wolf traveled side-by-side, hunting for food, but food soon became scarce in the lands they hunted.
So the the young male and the wolf were slowly walking toward their death, both refusing to eat the other. They were hungry, but not hungry enough. Finally, the young man collapsed, unable to move forward. The wolf pressed himself against the young man to give him what little warmth he could. No matter the way their stomachs twisted and screamed for sustenance, the two refused to kill the other. If one was to die, the other would follow.
The familiar scent of his human friend sent the wolf's heart racing, but he refrained his natural instincts to eat what was available and survive. The human had saved him when his pack had abandoned him and left him for dead. The human was not food, he was a friend. He was the only friend the wolf had.
The young man gently the wolf's head with what little strength remained; the wolf snuggled closer against the weak and frail body. The two shared a smile and closed their eyes, dreaming of a better tomorrow.
