chapter 13*

My Bully, My Lover

Soojin's POV

"What are you doing?" I hissed at Chanyeol. I was really starting to get tired of his wrist grabbing, but he wouldn't let go this time.

"Just shut up will you?" he shot back, giving me an annoyed look. He had dragged me all the way to the center of campus. "Everyone listen up!"

There was no need for that announcement, everyone was already paying attention to us. Some students even came out of the buildings to witness what was about to happen. I even saw some classmates sticking their heads out of the windows in buildings to observe as well. What are you doing Park Chanyeol?!

"I have something to say to all of you!" he shouted, still gripping onto my wrist. I looked over at Shinji and the boys. Shinji's eyes were wide and didn't know what was going on either. The boys however, were smiling at laughing with each other. I had a bad feeling in the pit of my stomach. This is not going to end well.

"You all better be listening because I'm not going to say it again!" Chanyeol continued. "This here, Lee Soojin," he lifted my wrist in the air. This? I'm a 'this' now?" Wait..what is he doing?! "She and Shinji are our friends now. If you have a problem with it, we don't care. Deal with it and leave them alone. Or I swear, you will have to deal with all of us."

My eyes grew round at hearing the words coming out of his mouth. I looked up at him in shock and confusion. I don't understand, what was he trying to do?

"You all know what happened to Yoojung. If you want to stay in this school, I suggest you start acting like real human beings and know what's right from wrong. It could have been a lot worse for her, don't test us." he threatened. His face was hard, his eyes blazing. Even I was starting to feel a little scared of him. "Am I understood?"

All the students were staring back in awe, probably as shocked and confused as I was. Some girls were whispering to each other about what happened to Yoojung - which I assumed was the girl that I thought was bullying Minji that day.

"I asked if I was understood!" Chanyeol shouted, his expression strong. The students replied back in agreement and nodded before he got more angry.

The first bell rang before anything can get more confusing and the students rushed into their buildings in fear of what might happen if they stuck around any longer. I have never seen my classmates so eager to get to their homeroom.

I looked down to see Chanyeol was still gripping my wrist. He followed my gaze and quickly let go, clearing his throat awkwardly. "Sorry." he softly chuckled.

"What...was that for?" I asked him, still looking down. It was embarrassing! There was no need for that, I can take care of myself! If anything, he made things worse! Now everyone - at least the girls - will be on my case for sure! And Minji...Oh gosh, Kang Minji...

"I promised I would make things better for you at school," he told me, making eye contact.

I looked up at him to see if he was joking, but he was sincere. His eyes were softer and full of sincerity. "You never promised me anything." I replied, getting nervous. Why is my chest beating so fast again?

Chanyeol's eyes grew in temporary shock as if he got caught but quickly recomposed himself. But I still caught it. "A 'thank you' would be nice!" he said to me, returning to his rude self.

"Yeah, alright. Thank you for being my knight in shining armor," I told him sarcastically, and honestly still kind of annoyed. "You didn't have to do that."

"Too late," he said, then walked back towards his friends without another word.

Ugh! I will never understand you, Park Chanyeol.

*****

"JUST ADMIT IT!!!" Shinji whisper shrieked. "There is something going on between you two!"

"Park Shinji." I gave her a hard look. "Shut. Up."

"No you shut up!" she continued. After what had happened this morning, nothing was the same. I understand Chanyeol's intentions were nothing but good, but he should have known better! All morning, I've been getting stared at and the whispers continued. It felt like my first day of school again - it was not pleasant.

And what's worse, almost everyone I passed in the hallways greeted me. As soon as Shinji and I entered the classroom, the entire class said hello to the both of us. It was weird and not okay. I was not use to this kind of attention, I rather be ignored than have to go through this every day.

"Chanyeol oppa has never done anything like that in the years I've gone to school with him," Shinji told me. "There is no way you two are just friends!"

"Shinji, please!" I was starting to get annoyed. I could handle every one else getting on my nerves, but I really needed at least Shinji to keep her sanity. "If you don't remember, Chanyeol mentioned you too."

Shinji waved my words away. "I'm nothing but a third wheel. He would have never said anything if it was just me. It's because of you he did."

Was it true? I refused to believe that Chanyeol and I were anything but friends - if that's what you can even call us. He was still annoying, still rude and the big jerk he was before. The only thing different now was that it wasn't all the time, just 90% of the time. He got on my nerves every time we were together and there has never gone a day when we didn't argue. How can two people like us ever be more than friends?

"I'm done talking about this and so are you." I told Shinji sternly, flipping through my notes. "I've only been gone for two days and I have so much to catch up on!" I mean, really. Of all days, I had to miss the two most information jam packed days. Just my luck.

"Yeah..." Shinji bit her lip. "Our biology teacher won't be too happy to see you today." Ugh, the dreadful biology teacher. I'm going to get an earful from her today.

"Help me!" I frowned.

"Sorry Soojin," Shinji told me apologetically. "I usually would, but I have to start planning the Winter Fundraiser Formal. I'm already running behind on so much and even if I pull all-nighters I don't know if I'll be able to do it all."

"Winter what what?" I asked. "What the heck is that?"

"It's the annual formal our school holds at the end of the year before winter break." Shinji explained. "It's huge, how do you not know about it?"

"Well in case you forgot, I'm kind of new here." I reminded her.

"Oh yeah," she giggled. "I feel like you've been here forever!" Yeah, it sure does feel that way.

"So it's like a party?" I was never too keen on parties, especially formal ones.

"Are you kidding me?!" Shinji started to get excited and I took a big breath to prepare for the big rant she was about to have. "It's the biggest party of the year! Everyone goes, everyone."

"I don't get it, I thought Korean schools were really strict. Why are we hosting a party?" I questioned. I may be from the States, but I knew that the Korean education system was not something to joke around with.

"It's a fundraiser formal," she started to explain. "You think the school gets all of our money from the government? No way. The parents of all of the students here make their fair share of generous donations. The school accepts donations throughout the entire year and then announce the final number at the formal. It's kind of like a celebratory-thank-you-for-giving-us-your-money kind of thing."

I nodded in understanding. "Oh I see. Sounds boring."

Shinji looked offended. "The complete opposite! The parents may see it as just that: a fundraiser formal, but for us students, it's an excuse to get dressed and have a party!"

This is stupid. I will never understand the ways of this school. "I don't have to go right?" Like I said, partying and dressing up were just not my thing, and I wasn't about to do both.

"WHAT DO YOU MEAN! OF COURSE YOU HAVE TO GO!" Shinji exclaimed. All of our classmates turned to look at her like the crazy person I'm starting to realize she was. She mentally hit herself for her outburst. "You have to go!" she repeated. "Like I said, everyone goes."

"Well, everyone but me. More of a reason for me not to go," I told her. "It sounds dumb."

"Oh come on Soojin!" Shinji grabbed onto my arm. "You have to come! This is the first year I'll actually have someone to hang out with! I'm always too busy planning and then when the day comes, I just end up having to work some more and making sure that everything is going according to plan. Please Soojin. You have to come so I can enjoy myself!"

"I don't know..." If it was for Shinji, I guess I could it up. She was my only realy friend here, it's the least I can do right?

"Oh please Soojin! For me!" she continued to plead.

I rolled my eyes and let out a sigh of defeat. "Fine. You better make it awesome."

Shinji squealed in delight. "Yay! Thank you, thank you, thank you! Don't worry, I have the most committee members this year than I have ever had in the past, so it should be FANTASTIC!"

The next teacher walked in and we were ready to start the next lesson. Oh Shinji, I'm starting to get soft for ou aren't I? I chuckled to myself.

*****

Chanyeol's POV

"Let's just get dinner." I told my friends during lunch. Soojin and Shinji were no where to be found, and I couldn't help but to worry a little. Where was she?

"Awh, come on man!" Baek exclaimed, forking his salad. "It's your 18th birthday! We can't just get dinner."

"Yeah, let's have a night out in the city!" Suho suggested.

"I'm fine with just dinner." D.O said.

"Thank you," I told D.O. I knew he wasn't much of a go-outer, so I had at least him to count on. I usually like going out and stuff, but I just didn't want to do anything that grand this year - even if it was my 18th birthday. I just want to have a relaxing, fun night with my best boys. I'm happy with just that.

"There's a carnival Saturday night, we should at least check that out." Sehun mentioned. Him and Kai were playing a game on their phones, laughing to themselves.

"Yeah, let's go!" Kai agreed.

"Eh, we'll see." I continued to eat my rice when I noticed Soojin finally walking into the cafeteria.

"Soojin! Over here!" Suho shouted for her. Why are you so eager to see Soojin? I felt a familiar twinge in my chest when Suho called for her, but I had no time to dwell on it - Soojin was heading over.

"Where have you been?" I asked her, looking at her up and down making sure she was in one piece.

"Well excuse me, but I was with Shinji for a little while." She took a seat next to Baek. I would lie if I said I wasn't a little disappointed, there was an empty seat next to me too.

"Where's Shinji?" Kai asked, not taking his eyes off Sehun's phone.

"She is off planning for winter party fundrasier or something." she answered.

Suho laughed. "You mean the Winter Fundraiser Formal?"

"Yeah, sure. What's the big deal about that anyways?" she asked, drinking from her bottle of water.

"I don't know. I think it's kind of boring if you ask me." D.O answered.

"It's kind of pointless for us. It's just a bunch of parents and their kids getting together to brag about how much money they have and gave to the school," Suho told Soojin. "I don't know why everyone makes such a big deal out of it."

"Shinji told me it's a huge deal." Soojin started. "I told her that I didn't want to go and she freaked out."

Not go? Why wouldn't Soojin go?

"Maybe it's different for girls." D.O said. "I know girls make a huge fuss out of it and seach for the perfect dress in hops to find the man of their dreams or something. But for the guys, it's a drag."

"Dress?" Soojin choked on her pasta. "I have to wear a dress?"

Baek nudged her, which earned a sour look from me. "Duh, it's called Winter Formal Fundraiser."

"Oh crap," Soojin face palmed herself. "I can't believe I didn't realize that earlier."

"Ohhh, we get to see you all dressed up and pretty!" Sehun teased, while the others joined in.

"Lee Soojin in a pretty dress!" Kai added, clapping his hands in laughter.

"Lee Soojin," Baek leaned in and smiled. "Will you be my date for the night?"

"She said she's not going!" I cut in. I'll admit, I was curious to see what Soojin looked like all dressed up. She probably looked even more beautiful than she does now. But when Baek asked her to be his date for the night, something snapped inside of me and I couldn't help but to interfere.

Baek directed the smile to me and the boys chuckled to themselves while nudging each other. "It was just a joke."

I cleared my throat, realizing that my cutting in might have been taken the wrong way. "I'm just saying."

"Actually," Soojin started to speak, not seeming to have a clue to why the boys were laughing. "I told Shinji I would go."

"You said you didn't want to!" Sehun said.

"Yeah, I don't. But Shinji begged me to come along." she said dreadfully. "I totally didn't realize the dressing up part though. Maybe I just shouldn't..."

"No way! You have to come!" D.O pressed. "Maybe it'll be more fun with you there this year."

"Yeah!" Kai added. "Ever since Chanyeol made that announcement this morning, the school has been leaving us alone for the most part in fear of who knows what might happen. If you hang out with us that night, maybe we'll be left alone then too."

"Ugh, I really hope so," Suho groaned. "I don't know if I can handle another year not being left alone from girls we don't even know."

The boys nodded in agreement.

"I'm sure you guys will be fine. Can't disappoint those ladies," she giggled.

"It'll be fun, you should go," I told her. She looked at me shocked that I would encourage her to go.

"And if it isn't?" she asked.

"What?" I asked.

"And if it isn't fun, are you going to take fault for it?" she challenged - and quite cutely may I add.

"Why should I be at fault if you don't have fun?" I asked her. What was she trying to do?

She shrugged. "I don't know, just wanted to know what you would say." She went back to her pasta.

"Don't ask for anything from Chanyeol," Baek leaned into Soojin again. "You'll only get disappointed."

Soojin laughed and closed when she saw my annoyed face, but it didn't stop the giggles. Dare I say it? I was jealous that Baek made her laugh so easily and so often. I wish that it was me to make her laugh like that. But I couldn't find myself to joke around with her like that. Every time I saw her, I always got annoyed or angry. Why was I being like this?

"Oh Soojin!" Kai exclaimed. "What are you doing this Saturday?"

"Studying," she groaned. "When are you going to teach me again?" she asked me.

"We can study after school if you want. I have a lot of work to finish too, so we can session at the library right after school today." I told her. Suddenly, I couldn't wait for the school day to be over.

She nodded in agreement and faced Kai again. "Why'd you ask?"

"You should come and celebrate Chanyeol's birthday with us!" Kai told her.

Kai you idiot! Why did you tell her that!? I shot him a death glare.

"It's your birthday?" Soojin asked me with a mixed expression on her face.

"Yeah." I mumbled. I usually love birthday attention, or any kind of attention for that matter. But for some reason, I didn't want Soojin to know it was my birthday. I knew it would burden her.

"Why didn't you tell me!" she scolded, getting upset.

"Why should I tell you when my birthday is!" I scolded back. This girl, even if I try to be nice to her, we always end up fighting.

"You're impossible." she sighed.

"I didn't do anything!" I shot back. Lee Soojin, you are unbelievable!

"So...is that a yes?" Kai cut in. The boys were all smiling, entertained by our bickering.

"Oh," Soojin suddenly softened. "I don't know...do you want me there?"

Yes. I automatically thought. I did want her there, but I couldn't let it show. The boys would never leave me alone. They think I like her when I don't. She's my friend. There's nothing wrong with wanting to spend my birthday with a friend. But the boys would not see it that way. I did want Soojin to be at my birthday party. I knew that if she was there, it would already be a better birthday spent. So I shrugged. "You can come if you want."

Soojin let out a sigh of frustration. "What do you want?"

"Why does it matter! Do want you want! I don't care!" I shot back. Why did she have to be so damn difficult all the time?

"Cause it's your birthday!" she told me as-a-matter-of-factly. "So of course it matters! If i'm not welcome, then I won't be there! Why are you being so difficult?"

Me? Difficult? It's you that's being difficult! "Do you know what I want?" I looked at her straight in the eyes. "I want to eat my lunch in peace without having to fight with you for 10 seconds."

"Ugh!" she groaned and stabbed at her lunch. "You're fricken impossible Park Chanyeol."

"You guys fight like an old married couple," Sehun laughed.

*****

"Alright, I have about five days to learn all of this." Soojin told me as we settled into our table in the library. We chose a table off to the side where we were not easily distubed, but still out in the open enough to people to spot us if they needed to. I wanted to get a study room, but she was being annoying and wanted to stay on the main floor.

"That's impossible." I told her, getting out my own work.

"What the hell!" she gave me a look. "You're supposed to be encouraging and tell me that I'll be fine!"

"I could, but I would be lying. I like to be realistic and tell you how it is." I said in a flat voice, waiting for her reaction.

"Ugh, no!" she hid her face in her arms on top of the desk. I bit back a laugh at the sight. Her frustration was entertaining to me. It was cute and funny to see how easily flustered she got.

"Lighten up, I was only joking." I let out my laughter and light nudged her shoulder. "You'll be fine. But you do have a lot of work to do if you want to pass that exam."

"Ugh! You're the worst!" she wailed. "I have never failed a test in my life, but I feel like this will be my first."

"Don't you remember what I said? I've never had one of my students fail before. You're in good hands." I told her confidently. And I believed it too. Soojin was a smart girl and she worked hard at everything. I wouldn't be surprised if she passed that exam without my help. She was too stubborn to let something as stupid as a history class bring her to failure.

For the next couple of hours, we silently did our work with the ocassional question and explanation exchange. We continued to bicker at each other and got scolded a few times by the librarian for being too loud. It was a good time, but I still almost got a headache from all of our disputes. They were always stupid, but we acted as if it was something worth arguing about.

"No, I can do this chapter tomorrow. If I evenly spread out these chapters by this weekend, I can use Sunday to review everything." she told me.

"No, do it now. It's still early. Don't procrastinate." I said. She finished the second chapter of the day and was about to leave, but I wasn't ready for her to. I wanted her to stay and keep me company while I finished my own work. But I would never admit that to her.

"But I have other work to do!" she complained.

"Then do it here!" I shot back. Why can't you just do as I tell you like everyone else!?

"Ugh, fine!" she groaned.

Another few hours passed by as we continued to work together in the library. There was even a point during the night when we were at peace, working hard and focused on what was in front of us. I looked over at Soojin and smiled at what I saw. Her attention was fully on her assignments. I always liked it when I saw someone working hard, especially Soojin. I admired her for that, she always put 100% in everything she did - even trying to win a fight against me.

She looked up and caught me staring. "What?"

"Uh..." I cleared my throat. "It's getting late, we should head home."

Soojin looked at her watch and quickly got up from her chair. "Oh crap! It's already 7?! I told Shinji I would meet her in front of the school!"

"What?" I was going to see if she wanted to get food with me, but I was disappointed to see that she was just going to leave.

"Sorry! I must have lost track of time." Soojin was quickly gathering her things together. "Thanks for helping me today! I'll see you tomorrow!" And with that she ran off.

Ugh, Soojin.

*****

Soojin's POV

The rest of the week was pretty uneventful. The students were slowly starting to get used to me being around and things were actually starting to get normal around here. Kang Minji has been absent all week and quite frankly, I didn't care. If she left forever, I would be ecstatic. Shinji has been busy with her other obligations and being head of the committee for the quickly approaching Winter Formal Fundraiser (WFF). We still found time to hang out with each other after school, which was nice. The boys continued to be their childish male selves. Shinji and I were able to spend time with them more freely now, which I admit, I enjoyed. We had a little group of good friends going and I was glad that no one was making it difficult this time.

Chanyeol and I have been studying together every day this week right after school. It became a little routine for us by Friday. We would meet in front of the library building and walk inside to our table together. We would settle in and go straight into our studies. Now if only we would stop being at each other's throats every 5 minutes. If it wasn't for that small detail, these past couple of days would probably be the best days since I arrived in Seoul.

"I think I might actually be ready for this exam!" I exclaimed. It had been a rough few days, but I was able to pull through and learn a lot of Korea's history. I hate to admit it, but Chanyeol was a really good tutor. If it wasn't for him, I would never be ready to take that test. I would be ready to fail it.

"You still got a few things to learn," he pointed out.

"Don't ruin my mood please." I frowned. It was the weekend and I was ready to give myself a well deserved break.

We packed our things and walked to the streets together. Chanyeol's car was waiting for him like it has the past couple of days, but mine was no where to be seen.

"Do you need a ride?" Chanyeol asked, lifting an eyebrow.

"Um, my ride should be here soon.." I took out my phone and dialed Jina's number. Apparently she had fallen asleep by accident and forgot.

"I'll be there in 10 minutes sweetie!" she said.

"It's alright Jina, I think I'll just catch a ride with my tutor." I told her. The bustling on the other end of the line stopped.

"Are you sure?" she asked.

I nodded. "Yeah, I'm sure it'll be fine. Don't worry and rest!"

I hung up the phone and Chanyeol gave me a smirk. "So...I might have to take you up on that offer."

"First tutoring, then breakfast and now giving you rides. What have you done to receive such treatment from me?" he joked as he held the door open for me to get in.

"Shut up." I said as I scooted all the way to the inside.

We rode in silence for the first few minutes. This was the first time I've ever been in a car with Chanyeol and I suddenly got nervous. Why? He was just a friend giving me a ride home, there is nothing to be nervous about.

"We're all meeting at my house tomorrow around 5," Chanyeol told me interuppting my thoughts. He was scrolling through his phone, unfazed by the two of us being in the car together like I was.

"Huh?" I looked to my right to face him.

"My house. At 5." he repeated.

"For what?" I asked. Did I have a reason to be at his house tomorrow?

"My birthday?" he said, looking at me like I was dumb.

"Oh!" I realized that tomorrow was the day him and the boys were getting together to celebrate his birthday. Was this supposed to be an offical invite? Did this mean that he wanted me to be there? "So, are you officialy inviting me to your birthday party?"

"You don't have to come if you don't want to." he said nonchalantly, going back to his phone.

Honestly, I wanted him to want me there. I wanted to be there to celebrate his birthday, but I wasn't going to say that. Especially to Shinji, who I knew was already planning to attend tomorrow. She won't let go of her fate-destiny crap. If I told her that I wanted to go to Chanyeol's birthday party, she wouldn't leave me alone. I don't understand why, there's nothing wrong with wanting to celebrate a friend's birthday.

"Do you want me to come?" I asked nervously. What if he said no?

"Sure, it'll be fun." he replied. I was thrown off and did not expect him to say yes. Well...I guess it wasn't really a yes, but it was good enough for me.

The car rolled up in front of my house as Chanyeol got out.

"Oh, this is your house?" he looked up and around my house. I got anxious. Before today, Chanyeol has never been to my house. Now he knew where I lived, he knew what it looked like and he didn't seem to be impressed. How could be when his house had it's own zip code? "It's nice."

Dang Chanyeol, you are seriously full of surprises today. "Thanks." I mumbled. "And thanks for the ride today."

He let out a soft laugh. "More thank yous."

"Shut up." I replied. "So...I guess I'll see you tomorrow then?"

"Don't be late like usual." he responded.

"I'm never late!" I shot back. He always had to ruin the good mood.

"Uh-huh, whatever you say." he opened the car door and waved before he got in. "Don't be late!"

I watched him drive off and continued to stand outside long after the car had gone. I had one thought and one thought only: what am I supposed to wear?
