chapter 10*

My Bully, My Lover

Soojin's POV

"No, it's fineee Jina! I can take care of it myself," I told her for the millionth time. I swear, sometimes I thought she was worse than my mother.

"Soojin. This is serious. If you're getting bullied at school, I must intervene! It's jeopardizing your school records!" Jina continued in the car, shaking in rage. "Look at your face! It's absolutely unacceptable!"

I rolled my eyes and let out a huge sigh. I was relieved that she believed me when I told her what had happened with Minji, but now she wouldn't drop it. Maybe I should have just let her thought I was the bully. At least she wouldn't be freaking out like this...or would she?

"It's fine Jina, really. Please, just let me handle it." I told her when we got out of the car. "If you intervene, it'll just make things worse than they already are."

Jina looked at my face deeply, unsure of what to do. Finally, she broke the eye contact in defeat and let out a huge sigh of her own. "Alright, fine! But if anything like this happens again, I'm going to be making a phonecall to the school!" she threatened, shaking her finger ferociously in the air. I couldn't help but laugh at the image.

*****

"Are. You. Kidding. Me?!" Shinji couldn't believe what I had told her. She called me after I ate lunch with Jina, hoping to keep me company during lunch time at school. Little did she know, I wasn't allowed back in school for the next 7 days. So I told her what had happened that day with Minji.

"I can't believe no one said anything!" she shouted, annoyed. "I'm sorry I wasn't there today! You know I would have had your back right?"

I laughed at this. I was very appreciative and comforted that I had her to count on at times like this. "Of course Shinji, I know."

"No, really! I know I'm really quiet, but if I was there when this happened, don't doubt that I wouldn't have cleared things up for you!" she said again.

"Alright, alright! I don't need convincing, I believe you!" I laughed.

After a little more chatting, I finally told her the news that I knew she would freak out over for the next few days.

"CHANYEOL OPPA IS YOUR TUTOR?!" she shouted. "OH MY GOSH! I CAN'T BELIEVE IT! THIS IS FATE! YOU TWO ARE MEANT FOR YOU EACH OTHER! DO YOU LIKE HIM? I THINK HE MIGHT LIKE YOU! OH MY GOSH! WHAT ARE YOU GOING TO WEAR? YOU SHOULD--"

"SHINJI!" I shouted back, cutting her off. "Can you please calm down? You're talking nonsense again. Fate, shmate. He's just my tutor, it's not a big deal alright?"

"Of course it's a big deal!" she started. "First you two hate each other. Then he suddenly saves you. And then you tell me you felt like he was avoiding you. He becomes your personal tutor and then suddenly he wants to call it a truce?! You can't possibly say there isn't something fishy going on here!"

I hadn't thought about it that way, but still - it's not like we were going to become each other's love interests. Shinji was always full of such nonsense.

I let out a sigh. "Whatever Shinji, you've been watching too many dramas." I joked.

"So when are you going to his house?" she asked, ignoring me. "Did he get in touch with you yet?"

I shook my head even though I knew she couldn't see me. "Nope, not yet. He told me to come by around 5. Do you know where he lives?"

I waited for a few seconds, but she didn't say anything.

"You do know where he lives don't you!" I accused her. "HAHA oh my gosh Shinji!" I couldn't stop laughing. It was just too funny.

"For your information, I actually don't know where he lives!" she protested. "I just know the neighborhood..."

"Okay, at least tell me that then so I know at least when I should leave my house." I looked at the clock and it was already 3pm. I should probably start getting ready if I want to eat and then leave to make it to his place on time.

"He lives in Apgujeong." she told me.

"Yah, we all live in Apgujeong." I shook my head. "Wanna be a little more specific?"

"He lives in the houses by the I-Park Apartments." she continued.

I dropped my pencil case. "He lives where?!"

"Yah, what's the matter?" Shinji sounded concerned. "Is there something wrong?"

"I live in the houses by the I-Park Apartments." I told her. There was no way that after all this time, this guy lived this close to me. There was just no way.

"Really?!" she screeched. "It's fate I tell you! It's sweet, sweet fa--"

I was getting another incoming call from an unknown number. My heart stopped. Is this Chanyeol?

"Yah, I gotta go. I think he's calling me right now." I told Shinji.

"He's calling you now? IT'S FATE! YOU CAN'T DENY IT ANY LONGER! DON'T FIGHT IT SOO--"

"Hello?" I had to hang up on her. Did I feel a little bad? Of course, but she'll get over it. Besides, I couldn't hear any more of her destiny talk. It was too much.

"Yah, Lee Soojin." said a very familiar, a very angry voice.

"Who's this?" I perfectly knew who it was, but I decided it'd be best if I played dumb.

"Shut up Soojin, you know who this is." he told me irritated. Whoa, what happened the the peacemaker from this morning?

"No need to be so feisty Mr. Park," I teased. "It took you long enough to call. Are we still down for 5pm today?"

"What happened today at school?" he asked, ignoring my question. Crap, did he hear about why I got suspended?

"What do you mean?" I continued to play dumb. If he was going to yell at me for being a bad person or something, then I was going to hang up. Forget tutoring, I can find someone else.

"Don't play dumb Soojin." he said seriously. "What happened today?"

"Sounds like you know what happened today," I told him. If I'm not allowed to play dumb, then he can't either.

"Why didn't you tell the truth!" Chanyeol raised his voice a little. "I thought you were a smart girl, but clearly you are a complete idiot!"

Whoa, where the heck was this coming from? I was too shocked by what he was saying, I continued to listen in silence as the grip on my phone tightened. Did he know the truth about what really happened? But how?

"You always have something to say, and of all times, you choose to stay quiet about this?!" he scolded. "Like seriously Soojin. I didn't know you were this dumb."

"Well what was I supposed to do!" I shouted back, getting annoyed. He didn't know the circumstances. There was no way a teacher would believe me. How could a teacher believe what I say versus what she saw? Especially if no one said anything to confirm my side of the story? "Do you even know what you're talking about? I doubt you were told the whole truth anyways.."

"I found out the whole truth. The boys and I made sure of it." he said seriously. "I know about Minji tricking you and that none of your classmates said anything to defend you. I know about how you got that ugly mark on your cheek."

I don't know why, but I started to tear up. Ugly? Was it really that bad? I couldn't help but to sudden feel a mix of emotions. Sadness, unfairness, irritation and again, gratitude. Even if Chanyeol had no intentions of it, I wanted to believe that he was being caring towards me.

"There's nothing I can do about it now." I whispered. If I said anything any louder, then I knew he would be hearing my shaky voice.

We were on the phone in silence for a few seconds until he spoke again. "I'll text you my address, come now."

"But it's only 3:30! School doesn't get out until 4:30!" I said a matter-of-factly. Wait a second, school doesn't get out until 4:30! How the hell is he on the phone with me right now? "Wait a sec--"

"I left early," he cut me off, answering my question before I could ask. "I'm almost home. Come now or I won't help you with history."

Before I could answer, he had already hung up.

"Hello? Hello?!" I groaned. "Are you kidding me right now Park Chanyeol?!"

*****

Chanyeol's POV

"So who's the girl that stole your heart?"

"Ugh, not you too noona. Please!" I whined to her. "She's just a girl from school!"

My sister had to come to pick me up since it was on the way home after I called her. She was probably one of my most favorite people in the world. She was tall and sophisticated looking, and even as a brother I could proudly say that she was beautiful. She took care of me and always put me before herself. I loved her so much and would do anything for her, just like she would for me. We've been through a lot together and developed a bond no one would be able to replicate.

But as much as I loved my dear older sister, she can be really annoying.

After Kang Minji was no where to be found during lunch that day, I tried calling her to give her a piece of my mind, but she wouldn't answer. Coward. I went through the next few classes, but I was too enraged, I couldn't focus. Everything just got me more and more irritated. When I saw girls in Soojin's class, I wanted to yell at them and ask why they didn't go to Soojin's defense. I wanted to find that girl that had blemished Soojin's perfect white skin. I needed to find the girl.

"Yeah, right. If she was just some girl from school, you would not be so affected by her like you are right now." she pointed out.

"Whatever noona," I glared at her. "You know I'm not interested in girls right now, it shouldn't be anything new to you."

"You just haven't found the right girl. 'What happened today at school'? 'The boys and I made sure we found out the whole truth'? Since when did you care so much about others? Except for family and the boys of course. And since when were you so persistent in getting a girl to come over?" she repeated the phonecall she had overheard. "What kind of trouble did Minji cause this time?"

"I said not to worry about it noona," I grumbled. "If I talk about it anymore, I might go crazy. I don't know what I'll do."

She folded her arms and raised a curious eyebrow. "So who is she?"

We had a staring contest like we always do when one of us wants the other to spill. But this time, she wasn't breaking. I let out a sigh in defeat and groaned.

"She's just this girl that recently transferred a couple weeks ago. She's from the States and for some reason the boys are super friendly with her. They really like her and like having her around. She's been hanging with us lately," I started. "But I swear, she's the most stubborn girl I have ever met! You think I'm bad? Wait until you meet her, seriously. You'll think I'm an angel!"

"I'm sure." she said sarcastically, the corners of moved up into a knowing smile. "She must be a really great girl for you boys to accept her into your tight cirlce like that. Looks like I'll be seeing this Soojin girl around a lot then?"

I looked out the window. "I don't know. I was assigned as her history tutor so maybe."

My sister looked at me surprised. "You're her tutor now? Didn't you say you didn't like her?"

"I was assigned, what else am I supposed to do?" I shrugged.

"Who are you and what have you done with my brother Park Chanyeol?" she said, her already big eyes getting bigger.

"What?" I was starting to get annoyed. I was already really irritated with everything that happened at school today with Soojin, I really didn't need to be teased right now by my own sister.

"The Park Chanyeol I know would never let something as stupid as a tutoring assignment make him see someone he doesn't like. The Park Chanyeol I know would make some sort of excuse to not tutor at all." she raised another suspcisious eyebrow at me. "You like her don't you?"

"Noona please!" I shouted as we pulled up into our driveway. "She's just a girl!"

"Doesn't sound like that to me," she winked and got out of the car.

I swear noona, you're just as bad as the boys.

*****

Soojin's POV

I gulped as I stood in front of Chanyeol's home. How in the world did I think my house was big? Chanyeol's house was probably twice the size. How the hell am I supposed to get inside?

I found the intercom and clicked the button.

"Park residence, how may I help you?" a voice answered.

"Ah, y-yes. Um.." I spoke into the receiver, nervously holding my books to my chest. "My name is Lee Soojin? I'm here for Park Chanyeol?"

"Ah yes! We've been expecting you! Come inside!" the voice responded and then a loud buzz was heard. I opened the gate that unlocked itself and slowly walked towards the front door of the mansion.

Oh gosh, Park Chanyeol. Please don't make this awkward for me.

*****

I walked in and was immediately greeted by a row of maids who bowed to me simultaneously.

"Welcome to the Park home!" an older lady approached me, arms wide open. "I am the head maid of this home. Please, if there is anything that I can do to make your stay more enjoyable, do not hesistate to ask!"

"Er...thank you." I told her. It was just too much and quite awkward. The maids were lined up, waiting for me to do something. What was I supposed to do? "Um..so Chanyeol...?"

"Yes! Yes! Young Master just got home a little while ago with his sister. He should be--" the maid told me happily only to get cut off by Mr. Rude himeslf.

"Took you long enough," he said. I looked up to see him descending down the stairs, drying his wet hair with a towel. He finally stopped a few feet in front of me and handed the towel to the maid. "We'll be in my room."

He grabbed my wrist and dragged me upstairs along with him. I looked back at the kind maid, giving her an apologetic look for Chanyeol's rudeness, but I guess she was used to it by now because her smile was even bigger now.

"Ow! Can you not!" I freed my wrist from his grip and massaged the dull pain. We were now in his room, which was what I was the most nervous about coming here. I knew that for some reason, if I entered his room, my chest would not cooperate. Of all the rooms in this huge house, we had to study here? "Hello to you too."

Chanyeol looked at me seriously. I felt the heat creeping up my cheeks again. His hair was still damp and his just-out-of-the-shower scent intoxicated me. This was the second time I saw him in something other than the school uniform. It may have just been a plain graphic shirt and jeans, but he looked like he walked right out of a magazine.

"W-What?" I mumbled nervously, looking at the floor. Why was he looking at me like that?

"What are you going to do about this?" He pointed at my face. I was afraid he was going to bring it up after our phonecall earlier. Why did he care anyways? I thought he'd be happy about not seeing me for 7 days.

I shrugged and walked past him to his desk, unable to stand under his gaze any longer. "I'm here to study."

He turned to face me, getting irritated. "Yeah, we'll get to that later after we talk about what happened today."

"Why do you care anyways? It's not a big deal so don't worry about it." I told him. I opened the textbook and started to flip through the pages. "I really need to start with chapt--"

His large hand shut the textbook and I looked up to glare at him. "What the heck!"

"I said, we'll get to that later." he said annoyed.

"Fine! What is it exactly that you want to talk about?" I folded my arms, annoyed. Why was it any of his business anyways? I wish people would just let what happened today go. The more they talk about, the harder it is going to be for me to forget.

"Tell me what happened today." he told me calmy, but his eyes were intense.

"You know what happened, why do I have to tell you?" I responded.

"I need to hear it from you." he said, not blinking once. His hand was still over my textbook and I didn't realize how close he was standing. I felt my cheeks starting to heat up again and and I told him what happened as I walked to the other side of the room.

Chanyeol nodded satisfied. "Good, then what I was told was the truth. You're not leaving anything out, are you?"

"Oh, did I forget to mention a kangaroo jumped in through our window with her little kangaroo babies?" I told hm sarcastically. "Yes, that's all of it."

He walked to his couch and plopped himself on the cushion, letting out a breath of frustration. "This school is so fcking messed up." he groaned to himself.

I walked over and sat on the arm of the couch. "Yeah, you're realizing this now?"

"I've been calling Minji all day but she won't answer. She probably knows that I know what happened. The boys all went home early too, you should have seen Baek. He rarely ever gets like that. But don't worry about your suspension, I'll talk to the dean and try to clear things out. And as for what happened to your face, I found the girl that did it. Well, Kai found the girl who did it. But don't worry about it, that's all taken care of too. If that leaves a bad scar, I can take you to my sister's dermatologist, he's really good with that kind of stuff." he told me nonchalantly, flipping through his phone.

I sat there like a statue as I listened to every single word that flew out of his mouth and just stared at him with big eyes. He noticed a lack of response from me and caught me staring.

"What?" he asked. "Is something wrong?"

Is this the same Chanyeol from a week ago? Where was all of this coming from? Why was he talking to me like...a friend? Like he cared for my well being?

"Why are you doing this?" I asked softly, looking down at my fingers.

"What are you talking about?" Chanyeol asked, starting to get annoyed again.

I looked up at him. "Why are you doing this? Why are you so fixated on what happened to me today? Why are you trying to help me?" I asked him seriously.

Chanyeol furrowed his eyebrows and looked at me like I asked the dumbest question ever. "Um...because we're friends? Isn't that what friends are supposed to do? Help each other?"

Friends. That word coming out of his mouth made my stomach flip twice, but left my heart feeling a little heavy. I should be happy about this right? Being friends with Chanyeol is a good thing. But why don't I feel as happy as I should?

I managed to show a small smile. "We're friends now?"

He continued to look at me like I was stupid. "Um, were you not paying attention to what I told you this morning?"

I shook my head. "No, I did! I just thought..." Just thought what? That he was joking?

"I was serious." he told me, softening his face. "Everything I told you this morning, I meant it."

My ears started to flare up as well as I continued to look at the ground, embarrassed to look at him. "Thanks..."

"More thank yous!" Chayeol exclaimed, getting up from the couch. He walked over and leaned forward, "If your thank yous were money, I'd be rich."

I turned to see his face just a few inches away, smiling. I snapped out of the new daze I was in and rolled my eyes and pushed him away playfully. "Do you see your house right now? You don't need any more money."

He laughed and grabbed my textbook from his desk. "So I'm not going to get paid to tutor you?"

*****

"Alright so Yi Hwang is from the Joseon Dynasty and his younger contemporary's name was..." I closed my eyes and searched through my brain for the name. "Yi Lay?"

"Wrong!" Chanyeol laughed. "I thought you were supposed to be smart."

"Shut up!" I lightly smacked his arm. "You try learning thousands of years in one night."

"Not a thousand, just a hundred tonight." he teased, trying to control his laughter.

"You know, why do I feel like you're even meaner after we've become so called friends?" I glared at him. Isn't he supposed to be the mature tutor helping me?

He placed a hand on my shoulder. "Don't worry, it's only the first day. You'll ace that exam. I've never had any of my students fail before."

"Lucky me," I grumbed, going back to my notes.

There was a soft knock on the door and both of us looked up to see who it was.

"Oh, I'm sorry to interrupt you dear. Is everything alright? I thought I heard shouting." A beautiful woman walked through the door dressed in a cream blouse and long gray skirt. She had pearls around her neck, big sparkling earrings and a number of dazzling rings on her fingers.

"Sorry umma," Chanyeol told her, still laughing. "We were just studying."

Umma? I quickly stood up and greeted her properly with a deep bow. "Ahnnyounghasaeyo." I told her. Wow, she is so beautiful. Now I see where Chanyeol got those genes from. "I'm sorry if we disturbed you. Chanyeol is helping me with some schoolwork. My name is Lee Soojin."

She smiled back at me with warm eyes. "Lee Soojin? You must be really special to my son to be at our house right now."

"UMMA!" Chanyeol shouted. "PLEASE!"

Her eyes twinkled as she laughed at her son's reaction. "You're the first girl he's ever brought home. Tell me, what did you do to convince Chanyeol to help you with school?"

"Well..." I started.

"I was assigned her tutor at school umma," Chanyeol answered for me. "Besides, why can't I have a friend that's a girl?" he said defensively.

She kept smiling and her eyes continued to gleam. "My son, we all know you never willingly hang out with anyone other than your small group of friends." She then turned her attention to me. "I'm glad you're getting him to open up a little."

I nervously laughed, not really understanding what was going on. Well this is kind of awkward. I feel like I stepped into a mother-son conversation.

"Anyways, the real reason why I came up was because dinner is almost ready." she told us. "So come down in just a few minutes. You'll be joining us for dinner won't you Soojin?"

"Um..." I shouldn't intrude on my first day here. "I should actually head home now."

"Shut up, we still have a lot more to finish tonight if you want to be on track for your test." Chanyeol told me. "We'll be right down umma."

Mrs. Park smiled, nodded and was about to leave when she stopped abruptly. "Oh! Minji and her parents will be joining us tonight as well. Her father and yours need to discuss some business. I hope that's alright."

Chanyeol and I stared at her wide eyed and then at each other.

Minji? Well crap.
