The Frozen Heart

Eunmi sat up and stared at the blank walls of her room. The morning air was crisp and her eyes slowly adjusted to the light. Eunmi slowly reached upward and stretched her tired limbs and readied herself for the day ahead. The bed creaked when she stepped out of bed, her bare foot gently touched the carpeted floor. Her bedroom door was open and Eunmi lazily made her way into the bathroom, the fruit of her sister's cooking evident from the smell that eminated from the kitchen.

Eunmi washed and dressed herself and made sure to wear a few extra layers to keep warm because she would never hear the end of it from Yoonmi if she came down with a cold. Her shoulder bag was lying on the couch in the living room, Yoonmi having already packed her things for her. Eunmi smiled to herself and made her way over to the dining table and noticed the small note her sister had left for her before taking off. She read the note to herself and giggled at her sister's concern for her, it was almost as if she were some sort of princess, but she stoped giggling when she read the next sentence; 'don't laugh because I really mean it'. She looked around the house; and wondered how did Yoonmi knew she was laughing. Was Yoonmi already at university or was she actually still in the house watching her? Her mind kept thinking about it.

To Yoonmi, Eunmi was definitely a princess - a princess who deserved all the affection in the world. She filled her stomach and left the house in content. Today would be her first meeting at the photography club and Eunmi was overjoyed. Maybe she'd even see that cute guy named Suho again...

Nothing out of the ordinary happened and all of Eunmi's classes passed by regularly. By the time Eunmi was done with her classes, her stomach was growling from hunger again, probably since Yoonmi didn't let her bring any unhealthy 'junk food' with her in her shoulder bag. Eunmi wasted no time in deciding that she would head out to eat somewhere off campus. She quickly gathered her belongings and made a bee-line toward the entrance gates and walked down the busy streets and looked at all the sights around her. The cold, winter weather made everyone dress up a lot less casual than usual. It was rare to see a guy in shorts and girls weren't in dresses and skirts, instead Eunmi noticed that there were a few young teenagers at her age that dressed in sweats and pranced about. A smile made its way to her bright face and the two sweaters she wore made her feel warmer than ever.

Eunmi stopped in front of the cafe and savored the sweet scent of baked goods and the feeling of familiarity. Her eyes lit up brightly when she walked in and saw the bread, hot from the oven and waited for her to order it. The line wasn't too long, and Eunmi happily reached into her bag to pull out some money when there was a sudden tap on her shoulder which came from behind her. She turned and came face to face with a familiar boy with brown hair and crescent-eyes when his lips were turned into a kind smile. He silently waved at her and expected Eunmi to say something first. Behind him, stood another tall figure who stared at the two with a confused look on his face. Eunmi looked back and forth from one person to another. Only about two seconds later, she mentally smacked herself for being so forgetful. She knew them! Well, she knew the first one at least.

"Baekhyun-sshi?" Eunmi greeted and gave him a small wave of her hand.

"Glad to see you remember this face," Baekhyun giggled before he continued. "And of course, can't forget the voice. The voice is key. Annyeong Eunmi-sshi!"

"What are you doing here?" She asked and realised a bit too late at what a stupid question it was.

"We're here to eat lunch, of course! I was missedthe taste of their bread and I decided to drag Chanyeol along with me. Oh right, you guys haven't met yet. Chanyeol-ah, this is Jung Eunmi. Eunmi, this is my weirdo-of-a-best-friend, Park Chanyeol."

The tall boy behind Baekhyun flashed a grin at her and held out his hand. "Nice to meet you, Eunmi-sshi."

"Likewise, Chanyeol-sshi." Eunmi replied and tried to reciprocate his wide smile. When his lips weren't pursed together in confusion, this Chanyeol guy was quite funny. Eunmi found that out when the three of them decided to order their lunch and sit together. Eunmi exclaimed to Baekhyun about how she too missed the taste of this cafe's food.

Chanyeol loved making cheesy jokes and Eunmi couldn't help but marvel at his charisma. The smile never left his face and even when he ate, he found some way to make it interesting, which meant that he decided to have an eating competition with himself and choked on his own saliva. Eunmi chuckled at the lanky guy in front of her and immediately understood why Baekhyun was his best friend. They made small talk and Baekhyun reminded Eunmi about their meeting that afternoon. Upon hearing that Eunmi enjoyed photography, Chanyeol raised his eyebrows and asked: "Photography? What kind of photos do you like to take Eunmi-sshi?"

"Well... I like anything. Anything that captures attention is beautiful. As long as I can have a few seconds to focus my camera on it, I'll take any kind of pretty photos."

"Need a model? I'm oh-so definitely attention capturing and have you seen my beauty? I mean, I totally look better without any makeup on." Chanyeol said and fanned himself with his hand smugly.

Eunmi stared at him and wasn't able to say anything before Baekhyun, who was sitting beside her, burst out into a fit of laughter. She then realized that Chanyeol was joking and laughed along and enjoyed the humor being passed around the table.

"Chanyeol-ah, however beautiful you are, you can't sit still for a second! Eunmi would never be able to get the right focus because all you'd be doing is movearound!" Baekhyun said and wiped a tear from his eye as he continued to chuckle at his friend's silliness.

"Wow, way to ruin it for me, Baekhyunnie! And here I was thinking I'd finally get my dream job as a model!" Chanyeol retorted, and turned to Eunmi to send her a wink. She returned the gesture and he raised his hand for a high-five. Baekhyun continued to let out streams of continuous laughter, because he was an energetic person and it was hard to get him to stop spazzing out.

"Yeah, now look who can't stay still." Chanyeol joked and pointed at his best friend.

After the small lunch break, Baekhyun insisted that Eunmi go with him to the club meeting after he received a text on his phone. It was supposedly an urgent meeting and since Eunmi was a new member, she had a right to know what was going on. Without knowing anything, Eunmi agreed and the three of them made their way together. Chanyeol waved as he sprinted down the hallway. Baekhyun excitedly explained to Eunmi that he was always late for something, whether it be meetings or class. She nodded and they continued to make their way to the photography meet up.

When they reached the doors of the photography club room, Baekhyun told Eunmi that he had to head to his locker to grab a few notes. Eunmi was instructed to go inside, take a seat and wait for the meeting to start. Without allowing any questions, Baekhyun took off and Eunmi was left to stand by herself in the empty hallway. She knocked gently on the door and waited for a response. When she didn't get one in return, Eunmi reached for the doorknob and tried to open it. When she found that it was unlocked, she opened the door and walked inside. The room was dimly lit and nobody was present.

'Is this a mistake?' Eunmi thought to herself. 'Did Baekhyun show me the wrong room? No way! He's a member of the club...'

Eunmi decided to wait as Baekhyun instructed. She made her way to one of the chairs around the round table and took a seat but she could hardly sit still. Eunmi kept fidgeting, and crossed one leg and then the other. She felt like she could throw off sparks, or break a window or maybe rearrange all the furniture to make herself less nervous and suffocated. She looked around the room and saw the beautiful pictures that decorated and embellished the room. Pictures of flowers, people, buildings, shapes, as well as  other things adorned the four walls of the room, and Eunmi couldn't help but gaze at each unique picture lovingly and with awe.

She looked at her watch on her left wrist. Five minutes had gone by and none had showed up. Was this some sort of prank? Why did both Chanyeol and Baekhyun both leave her? Eunmi was about to stand up and leave when the door swung open and a lone figure walked inside. It was a male by the looks of his short hair and thick, furrowed eyebrows.

"Hello? Who are you?" Eunmi asked and the stranger mysteriously.

"I'm a member of the photography club, the president." He mumbled and looked at Eunmi.

"And you are?"

"I'm Jung Eunmi, newest addition to the photography class!" Eunmi said and bowed to the person.

President...

President...

The president!

"Suho-sshi!?" Eunmi called out as the guy looked at her in surprise. She could see his face better now that he was standing under the poorly lit light and it was definitely the handsome face that had lent her a handkerchief just a few days ago.

"You know my name er... Jung Eunmi-sshi?"

"Yes, I do! You're Suho right? I was the person you helped the other day, don't you remember me? I still have your handkerchief." She exclaimed, pulled her bag over and reached inside, in search of the cool, satin material that belonged to the person in front of her.  Disappointed when she couldn't find it, she looked into the expectant face of Suho.

"S-S-Sorry, I must have left it in my room. I promise I'll return it to you next time!"

"Eunmi-sshi? Don't be so sad, its completely fine! Patience is a virtue right?" He chuckled gently.

"Uhm, yeah. I guess it is! Oh! Sorry, I never introduced myself formally. My name is Jung Eunmi, please just call me Eunmi." Eunmi said cheerfully, and visibly relaxed.

"Eunmi? Okay, I'll call you Eunmi, if that's okay with you. You can just call me Suho Sunbae."

"Okay, sunbae! I was about to call you Mister President! Wow, I'm so lucky because I get to meet the president of the photography class at my first meeting!" Eunmi chirped happily and Suho nodded his head in acknowledgement of her statement.

"Mister President? Who am I, Barrack Obama?" Suho jokingly asked to loosen up the awkward atmosphere before he cotinued. "By the way, how did you get into our club? I have bad memory, so remind me, please?"

"Well... You were the one who let me in."

"I-I was?!"

"Y-Yeah, you were kind of busy that day, but Kyungsoo-sshi and Baekhyun-sshi asked you if you would let a girl join and you agreed."

"Ah, yeah... Right! it has slipped my mind. I'm sorry."

"Its okay! You must be very busy!"

"Well then Eunmi, I suppose you are here for the urgent meeting that should be taking place right about now?"

"I am actually! But... How come there is no one here?"

"I'm not too sure either. I got a text from Kyungsoo a while ago and they told me to meet here. Those kids, seriously! They are always screwing around and probably forgot about this meeting already! They didn't even bother to clue me in about the topic! I thought everything was doing good!"

Eunmi laughed at Suho's outburst at his club members. She later learned that as much as he enjoyed complaining about them, he loved all the same. To the club members, he was the grouchy one who was always watching out for their behinds. Moody as he was, everyone still loved him because of his genuine concern for them as if they were his own family. Eunmi enjoyed being in the presence of this bubbly personality who was willing to talk about any topic. They got to know each other and Suho was even interested as to why she wanted to be a part of the photography class.

"I love photography!" Eunmi confirmed.

"Obviously you do, but what makes you like it so much?"

Eunmi considered the thought-provoking question.

"Well, photography is a beautiful kind of art. It captures the moment in where there is happiness, sadness, joy, or sorrow. When you take a picture, that moment is forever saved and all the memories that go with it. If you look closely at a picture, you can observe so many new and different things. For example, when I take a close-up shot of flowers, the bright petals, the hint of dusty pollen, and the lively green roots and stems makes me realize just how enthralling nature truly is..." She trailed off as she found herself rambling.

Suho was nodded profusely at her words, as if  he agreeed with every little thing she said.

"That's a wonderful way to view photography. It is a cruel, ironical art, photography. The dragging of captured moments into the future; moments that should have been allowed to be evaporate into the past; should exist only in memories, glimpsed through the fog of events that came after. Photographs force us to see people before their future weighed them down. You sound like an amazing photographer and I have yet to see your masterpieces."

Before their conversation could go any further, the door to the room swung open and a rather loud stream of people flowed in, shouting various things.

"Welcome to the Photography Club, Eunmi!" They cheered. Eunmi recognized a cute, shrill voice that could only belong to Baekhyun.

"Baekhyun-sshi?" Eunmi giggled, ecstatic that these friendly people were so welcoming.

"Call me sunbae Eunmi! Drop the formalities, you're part of the photography family now! We're so glad to have a new club member and most importantly, you're a girl! Finally, we do have a new face which is undeniably very pleased to gaze upon! So, welcome to the club!"

"Not to mention photogenic! We hope with this small welcomed party, we'll be closer with each other!" Came Chanyeol's deep voice from her right side. She laughed and thanked them gratefully as Sehun, Kyungsoo and Jongin walked up to her to welcome her and Jongin smirked when he admitted that he wasn't actually a part of the club, he just wanted to be there because this was the first time his grumpy Suho hyung had allowed a girl to enter the club. What a miracle!

"Thank you so much for the warm welcome, I never thought you're this friendly and I'm so honored to be part of this club! Please take care of me." Eunmi bowed and promised that she would always be on time to the meetings and that earned her a pat on the back from Suho, who told her that he was initially worried that allowing a girl into the club would be troublesome. Eunmi was proud that Suho didn't find her bothersome and was present when they celebrated her membership.

When the little 'party' had ended, Eunmi walked off the college campus with occasional giggles at the thought of her group of new friends. They all shared the same interests as her and were all amazing in their own way. Baekhyun was so funny. When he was Chanyeol, the two proved to be an outstanding comical duo. Sehun had some kind of cool, manly personality and Kyungsoo was motherly, almost like Yoonmi. He fussed over drinks and snacks while Jongin followed him around, a smirk plastered to his face like it was meant to stay there forever.

Then there was Suho. Suho had a dazzling smile. Suho enjoyed photography as much as Eunmi did and probably even more. Suho was charismatic even if he didn't even know it. His gentle laugh echoed in her head and Eunmi found her cheeks flushing with the thought of the well-mannered guy, though she convinced herself that the cold, winter weather was the cause of her flushed cheeks.

The heavy textbooks were on her desk and Yoonmi was reading its content dutifully. Her professor had insisted that the class was to prepare for the finals, even if it was early. Apparently, they were changing the testing style and tests now required a lot more explaining and logical reasoning. Yoonmi had her pen in hand and her eyes skimmed each page with concentration. Sje was interrupted when she heard Eunmi ringing the door bell from outside. Yoonmi threw her pen to a side and rushed to open the door for her sister. Yoonmi wondered why Eunmi didn't open the door with her house keys.

"I'm back, Yoonmi!" Her sister called out, and laughed when Yoonmi opened the door and crossed her arms.

"Why didn't you just use your keys?" Yoonmi inquired while Eunmi looked at her sheepishly.

"I left them at home I think."

"No, you didn't. I placed them in your bag this morning before I left. See? This is why I need to be at home to watch out for you. I don't need my sister turning into an icicle just because she was being forgetful."

"I never noticed them there! Thanks Sis! But how would I become an icicle?" Eunmi wondered as she stepped into the house and shrugged off the many layers of clothing she was wearing.

"If I wasn't at home, you would have to wait outside and you'd freeze!" Yoonmi said playfully and her melodious laughter brought warmth to Eunmi. Yoonmi took the sweaters and hung the, up inside the coat closet.

"Are you hungry, Eunmi? I have a few more pages to read for my class and then I'll prepare dinner okay?" Yoonmi said, looking at her sister and expected a response.

"I'm not hungry right now, but you do realize you're forgetting something right?" Eunmi replied, which made Yoonmi confused and worried.

"What did I forget Eunmi? Did I forget to pack something in your bag today? I'm so sorry!" Yoonmi started, intending to figure out what she may have forgotten.

Seeing that her sister was actually starting to panic, Eunmi grabbed her by the hand and dragged her into her room and sat her down on her bed.

"Don't freak out,Yoonmi-ah. You just promised to tell me about your date with that candy-guy, remember?"

Yoonmi sighed, relieved that she didn't forget to pack something for her sister.

"Mm... So are you trying to tell me that I should tell you what happened right now?"

"Of course!" Eunmi rolled her eyes playfully.

Yoonmi glanced the ceiling, as if she was unsure of what to say. Eunmi let Yoonmi take her time as she told her of her first real date. "My date... We met up at the cafe and he bought me coffee. He took me to the movies. At the theatres, he gave me money to buy snacks, which mind you, are extremely unhealthy nowadays... And then we went to a park nearby afterwards." Yoonmi finally revealed what had happened.

"What was he like? You only told me about how he looks like, not even a bit about his personality!" Eunmi pressed.

"Su-... Uh, I mean he is very kind and considerate. When we arrived at the theater, he opened the door for me and helped me out. It was weird, but the action was so genuine that I couldn't help but take his hand. When we were in the theater, I offered to pay. He didn't allow me to. During the movie, he... Held my hand the entire time, but it wasn't a horror movie though. The park he took me to was breathtakingly beautiful Eunmi-ah... Everything was so perfect..."

"Woah, so you let him hold your hand on the first date? He must be really special to have earned that privilege!" Eunmi exclaimed and urged her sister to continue.

"His smile... Is contagious. It felt like everything about him was filled with a positive glow. His laugh is gentle, never mocking. Whenever he was talking or asking me questions, he was always interested in what I had to say and never looked away." Yoonmi sighed and hoped she could satisfy her sister's demanding ears.

"So... You like him don't you? It's official that you like him, isn't it?" Eunmi shrieked, overjoyed for her sister.

Yoonmi thought about it. His actions were heartfelt and his words were tender. The gaze he had in his eyes when he looked at Yoonmi told her that he was beyond perfect. Yoonmi felt herself releasing a deep breath and nodded to confirm Eunmi's question. Of course she liked him. She already proved that fact to herself when she returned his kiss at the park, not once even attempting to pull away. Her sister didn't need to know about thatthough, and she didn't bring up the magical moment in which her body tingled and her legs went numb. She remembered his hot breath against her nose when he had pulled away, the way his stare lingered on her, as if he was waiting to be rejected.

"I'm jealous." Came Eunmi's short reply, causing Yoonmi to gasp.

"You seem to have found the perfect relationship and it's only been your first date! This guy really must have done something right in his past life to be able to get a chance with my sister! So tell me, Yoonmi-ah, will I get to meet him soon?"

Yoonmi bit her bottom lip. She didn't want Eunmi to know Suho just yet. Things would become extremely awkward and Yoonmi wasn't ready for that.

"I can't," Yoonmi replied carefully. "Because my beautiful sister would probably steal him from me." She sighed internally. It was better to joke about it rather than straight out tell Eunmi that she didn't want the two to meet. And in some reality, she found her statement to be somewhat believable. Her lovable sister could steal just about anyone's heart. Of course Eunmi couldn't see what she was trying to hide and actually bought the joke.

"I doubt this mysterious guy would leave you for me, Yoonmi-ah!" Eunmi smacked her playfully on the shoulder.

"Speaking of mysterious people..." Yoonmi said, thinking aloud before she continued.

"There is this one guy at my university who is the dictionary definition of mysterious."

"Oh tell me more!" Eunmi said, her interest was centered on her sister, who usually talked very little unless it the words were forced out of her.

"This person, Xiu-Xiumin sunbae... He is very distant. When he talks, it seems like he's reciting poetry. He is very introverted, preferring to play music alone in an abandoned room than sit with his friends. He's also has a sad past, but everything about him makes me so... Curious. I don't know Eunmi, but he seems to be so sad on the inside. Even when he is smiling brightly on the outside... I feel that every statement passing his lips is filled with remorse. He is regretful of his past and I feel like he is punishing himself for it." Yoonmi muttered.

"Hmm... Interesting! But, you know what?"

"What?" Yoonmi asked back.

Eunmi gawked at her sister. How could she not see the resemblance?

"Yoonmi-ah... Do you realize something?" Eunmi raised her eyebrows. Her sister looked up at her, unsure of what to say. She shook her head and took her sister's thin fingers into her own, Eunmi whispered.

"When you were describing this Xiumin Sunbae...you were literally describing the old you."

"The old me?"

"Uhm... You were always so quiet. I'm so glad you've finally gotten over that-Incident-and moved on. That was you back then Yoonmi, it really was." Eunmi stated a little louder than before.

'I haven't completely gotten over it, Eunmi... I guess I'm just really good at hiding it...' Yoonmi thought to herself. Yoonmi pretended to laugh it off, and proceeded to ask Eunmi about her first meeting of the photography class. Eunmi happily responded, and cheerfully told Yoonmi about the small welcome party that had been a surprise, the many different personalities she met and how they were all very friendly towards her, and the club president.

"It seems like you had a good time." Yoonmi said, smiling lightly.

"I did! And the club president is so caring! He loves all the members like family. When he met me, he was willing to learn about me and everything about his is so sincere. He's a great person."

"Well, he definitely sounds like one. And from the looks of it, I think my sister is falling for this president guy." Yoonmi chuckled. This time, it was Eunmi's turn to purse her lips. She was definitely interested in Suho, for sure. It hurt her that he couldn't remember her as the girl who he lent his handkerchief to. Instead of a direct answer, Eunmi just let out a small stream of giggles as Yoonmi stared at her with a curious expression.

'I'll tell Yoonmi that I like him later... After I make sure to leave a strong impression on him, an impression that will make him remember me for sure!'  Eunmi silently planned. "I'll tell you later. Only when you are being happy and not all sulky like always!" Eunmi playfully stated. Yoonmi's face dropped and before Eunmi could process what happened, she earned a pillow to the face.

"Yah! Jung Eunmi! How could you say your happy sister is sulky?! I'm hurt!" Yoonmi replied childishly. Eunmi laughed at her adorable sister and grabbed a pillow of her own, swinging it wildly and hoped she somehow managed to hit her sister back.

The two sat on the bed tired and worn out. Yoonmi's hair was disheaveled and Eunmi swore that her clothing was all wrinkled up now. They sat together in silence and enjoyed the bonding experience. It was Eunmi who spoke up first, she was always the chirpier one.

"Yoonmi-ah, if I was a boy who wasn't your sister... And that mystery guy hadn't captured your heart yet, I'd definitely think you were from Tennesse because you're the only ten I see." Eunmi joked, fully aware of how lame it sounded

"Eunmi-ah, if I was a boy and wasn't your sister, I'd make you fall in love with me by teaching you how to count shoulders in Spanish." Yoonmi giggled and replied.

"Huh?" Eunmi said, looking confused.

Yoonmi scooted closer to her and brought her hand to her own left shoulder, brought it across to the right shoulder and onto Eunmi's shoulders. "Uno. Dos. Tres. Gotcho." She sing-songed, her right hand landed on Eunmi's right shoulder. She pulled her sister in for a hug and shook away her momentary embarrassment. When she finally understood the joke, Eunmi bursts into her own fit of giggles. Eunmi never thought that her sister could make a joke like that, and where had she even learned the Spanish words?

"That is so cheesy! Jung Yoonmi, where did you learn that?" She cried out, wiping a tear out of her eyes.

"I have the internet." Yoonmi shrugged.

"You're so hot Yoonmi - the sun isn't as hot as you." Eunmi continued, not about to let Yoonmi stop there.

Yoonmi smiled.

"You're so cheesy Eunmi, that I could put you in between two slabs of bread and serve you for lunch!" And with that, they collapsed onto the bed, laughing to their hearts' content before a sudden text message alert came from Yoonmi's cellphone. Yoonmi frantically grabbed her cellphone and read the message and in a flash of light before her gaze landed on Eunmi's face.

"Who's that?" Eunmi asked, slightly rising her eyebrows curiously but Yoonmi just smile as a respond to her question.

"You know, just..."

"Hmm... By seeing how sweet your smile is, I think I know who could the sender be, let me guess!" Eunmi interupted as she snapped her fingers excitedly, getting ready to shoot her guess while Yoonmi shook her head with light feelings.

Chapter 36: BUT HOW
HOW
WHY
OH MY GOD
HOW
HOW
I regret my wish for “sometimes i want an 'unsatisfied' ending”. No, i want my ending. Oh God. I expected this. But, i still kokosad. Okay. Anyway, you did good author! The story and the conversations are nice! Some conversations are well spoken/? or written/?. Although if i can be honest, there are some typos and grammatical error (probably, I'm not 100% sure since I'm not that good actually, but my feeling just says that) that sometimes kinda confusing and annoying. But, really, it's actually a good story with beautiful quotes so i kept reading this till i finished. Also, the story played my emotion very well, so it must be considered as good, right? I've decided, Eunmi is the innocent one here. Thank God she acted rational. Yoonmi and Junmyeon are dumb. Idc, for me they're dumb. Junmyeon for what he did and Yoonmi for too selfless enough that it hurted herself. That's all! Thank you, author ♡ i enjoy your work!
