Yoseob woke before everyone, but he was already getting used to that. In the light hours of the morning he stood and surveyed their meager supplies, sick with the knowledge that if they didn't find fresh water soon then they would die. They had all begun to search the island in small groups, but no one had pushed further inland, afraid of what they might find or afraid of getting lost. Today he determined to go until he found water; their lives literally depended on it.
With a deep sigh he rose to his feet, and after grabbing a bundle of cloth strips he turned toward the jungle. A hand caught his wrist, though, and he looked down to see Eli looking at him questioningly. "Where are you going?" He whispered, staying quiet so as to not wake the others. "To find water," Yoseob answered, and after just a moment Eli jumed to his feet and took the strips from Yoseob's hand. "I'll come with you," he said, and set off before the shorter boy could resist. He tried to hide a sigh as he followed Eli; he knew it was smart to search in pairs but he didn't really want to be stuck with a pompous jerk all day.
Oh well.
They entered the jungle at a spot where the underbrush was thinner than usual, and after about an hour of hiking, Yoseob noticed that it had thinned out even more to reveal a path of sorts. "Well, yes... is it a human trail or an animal one? Is this island inhabited?"
"Yeah, by us," Eli replied and this time Yoseob did roll his eyes, pushing past the stocky boy to take the lead. The idiot probably didn't even know what habitat meant. They spent the next few hours in silence, the hunger and thirst growing as they still found no water. Yoseob could hear Eli's breathing begin to grow a bit strained, mirroring his own, and so he stopped and pulled his intended lunch out of his pocket, offering the papaya to the other boy. Eli took it gratefully and split it in two, handing half back to a surprised Yoseob.
Catching the look of shock on the other's face, Eli rolled his eyes and laughed, a bitter sound that seemed loud in the silence. "You don't have to look at me like I'm some sort of monster," he said, and Yoseob cocked his head to the side to study Eli's features as he stared at the ground. "I'm not... cruel."
"You sure seemed it back at school," Yoseob found himself answering, a bit irritated that Eli was playing the 'innocent' card even though everyone knew he was anything but. "Picking fights and bullying others. You're right, that's not cruel at all." The sarcasm was thick in his voice as he finished speaking.
Eli rolled his eyes again as he wiped his mouth on the sleeve of his t-shirt. "Oh, like you're so perfect. You've always been a two-faced little , acting all nice and sweet to everyone but laughing about them behind their backs. Don't ev
