Jeju Island...Why Am I So Insecure?

Opposites Attract

Sunjung's POV

You yawned as you lugged your suitcase around the airport, following your class, and holding Ren's hand, at the same time.

He chuckled a bit.

"Are you tired?" he smiled gently.

You shook your head, but really, you didn't have a wink of sleep that night.

Today was the day for the school trip.

You were excited to go, so you didn't really have much enthusiam for sleep.

Ren gave a kiss on your forehead.

"Aigo, if you're tired, just say so," he said, sensing your lack of sleep.

"Aniya," you whined playfully. "I'm not."

He laughed a little.

"If you say so, jagi."

Nayoung and Jae joined you two at the luggage check.

"Annyeong," Nayoung smiled warmly.

"Annyeong," you replied back, also with a smile.

You two engaged in conversation, while Jae and Ren started to get hooked into their own conversation.

"So, how long have you two been dating?" Nayoung asked, as we sat down at the resting area, before it was time to get on the plane.

You took a second to think.

"About two months." you finally said.

"Really? Feels like longer," Nayoung grinned. You nodded in agreement.

"Passengers on flight C156 from Seoul to Jeju Island, please form a proper line. We are starting to leave, I repeat..." You tuned that intercom voice out, and you made your way to the line with Nayoung, Jae, Ren, and the rest of your classmates.

"I'm so excited," you admitted to Nayoung.

"Yeah, and the best part is, we get to wear bikinis! Score!" she said, fistpumping. "Did you pack yours?"

You nodded.

"Of course I did! It would be a complete tragedy if I didn't." you said.

Nayoung nodded in agreement.

"Hey, what does yours look like? It's not the same one you wore to the beach last summer right?" she asked curiously.

You laughed a bit and nodded.

"Of course it's a different one. And it's a baby blue one." you replied. "You?"

"Ah," Nayoung nodded. "Good choice. And I have a pink one with flowers on it."

Somehow, you could visualize that in your head clearly.

Finally, you got to the front of the line, and the lady took your ticket, as well as Nayoung's, Ren's, and Jae's.

You hurried to find a good seat, and ended up sitting next to the window, Nayoung to your right.

Ren and Jae sat somewhere else, enjoying their guy time.

You felt a fondness in your heart when your boyfriend and your best friend were bonding with each other.

Nayoung scrolled down her phone.

"Aigo, it's going to be so hot at Jeju!" she groaned.

You peered over her shoulder to take a peek.

She was right.

The weather was warmer than you had expected, and you silently sighed in relief when you remembered to pack sunscreen and sundresses.

Oh, and you didn't forget the sunglasses.

Those were important.

The flight was endlessly boring; you had no idea how many times you almost dozed off, only to be waken up by Nayoung's incessive talking.

"Oh, ugh, Valentine's Day is coming up," Nayoung frowned a bit. "I wonder what I should get Jae... A watch?"

You yawned.

"No, you gave him a clock for Christmas, remember?" you said after a moment. "Maybe you should just give him chocolate."

Nayoung gave a little pout.

"How about you?" she asked. "What are you getting for Ren?"

You took a second to think about this.

"Hn, chocolate. Maybe a stuffed animal, but I'm not quite sure." you replied, waving your hand off.

She rolled her eyes.

"You're just gonna procrastinate until the day before. Pabo." Nayoung said, before going back to perusing her phone.

You shrugged, and looked out the small squarish window, your eyes slowly closing.

Then, you were lifted into a world of black.

You woke up some time later on, after Nayoung shook you wildly.

"Wh-what?! Are we here yet...?" you mumbled, rubbing your dry eyes.

It took a moment to get used to the bright light, but you had finally adjusted when Nayoung nodded.

You gazed out the window and blinked, processing everything.

You saw the clear blue ocean, gentle dancing of the palm trees, and people and buildings everywhere.

The sky was dark, but littered endlessly with sparkling stars, and lights hung around the shingles of buildings.

It was an amazing view, and you couldn't help but gape at it.

Your eyes were wide, and Nayoung chortled a bit.

"St-stop it," you stuttered, your voice still hoarse from your nap.

Nayoung gave a little giggle.

"Anyways, you're adorable when you nap." she teased feverently.

You pouted.

"In fact... I should show Ren," she said, waving her phone playfully.

Your eyes widened, and dread filled your system.

"You wouldn't."

"I think I would~" Nayoung replied distractedly, keeping an eye on her precious phone.

You lunged for it, but she dodged your flailing arms tactfully.

"Just kidding Sunjung!" she laughed.

You grumbled and muttered under your breath, glaring at Nayoung a bit.

"Someone's a bit moody when she wakes up," Nayoung said, looking down at you, raising a single eyebrow.

You scowled.

"Yeah..." you agreed. "I'm like this when I don't sleep enough."

Nayoung let out a light laugh, and then tried to hide her grin.

"Don't worry. I won't show Ren. Come on, I think the line is getting smaller. I think we can leave now." she said, watching the puddle of people slowly diminish.

"Arasseo," you replied, getting up, and moving over to where the lugagge was.

Opening the cabinet-like door, you removed your duffel bag, and Nayoung did the same.

Then, you slung it over your shoulder and followed Nayoung out.

On your way out, you saw Ren and Jae laughing.

"Annyeong," you said, blinking tiredly, but still going into the arms of your boyfriend.

Ren kissed the top of your head and glanced at you, amused.

"Are you tired?" he asked, to which you nodded.

"I took a nap..." you mumbled, rubbing your eyes again, and blinking, so you could moisten them.

Ren laughed, and wrapped his arm around your waist, firmly, but also gently.

If that was even possible.

Nayoung and Jae held hands, and I couldn't help but take a picture of it.

Snickering quietly, Ren rolled his eyes.

"You're evil," he said.

"Hm," you hummed.

Then, you two started to engage in conversation as you both walked out to the charter bus, where it drove you to the hotel.

In the hotel, your room mate was Nayoung.

It was four to a room, but you were lucky and it was only you two.

You sat on the bed, and wiped your face, applying lotion on it.

Nayoung was in the bathroom, brushing her teeth.

You got under the covers of your bed, and said loudly, "I'll be going to sleep now! Don't freak if you see the lights off!"

"Kay!" she replied back, and you turned the knob on the lamp, which clicked when it flashed off.

You closed your eyes, and heard her open the door, clicking the bathroom lights off.

"Night," Nayoung said, climbing into her own bed.

"Good night," you replied, falling deeper and deeper into sleep.

The next morning, you had brushed your teeth, dressed yourself, and you were reviewing the schedule for the day.

It was packed since the vacation only lasted about three days.

First was sightseeing.

Okay, so your class had freedom to sightsee anything; they just couldn't leave more than three miles of the area.

Sounds fun.

You grabbed your bag, which carried your phone, money, and some food to keep you alive when you were hungry.

Also, you stuck your hotel key in the safest pocket.

"Hey, are we swimming today?" you asked Nayoung.

"Yeah," she replied. "We're heading to the beach right now."

You nodded.

"Thanks." you said, and Nayoung gave a hum as a reply.

You went over to your duffel bag, and ped it, pulling out your bikini.

You groaned as you changed into it, fitting your casual clothes over it.

Then, stuffed a fresh, extra pair of clothes in your bag, just in case.

"I'll be going out first," you told Nayoung, who was busy changing into her swimsuit as well, and went outside.

Making your way to the elevator, you pressed the button to go down.

Nayoung, by this time, had joined you, and you two waiting eagerly for the elevator to come.

When one did come, the doors slid open, and behind them were none other than Ren and Jae.

"Ah, annyeong," you said, getting in.

"Annyeong," Ren smiled to you.

Nayoung had slid near Jae, and he put his arm around her shoulder.

Aw. How cute.

The elevator stopped on the lobby floor, and you all exited.

The beach was just right there, so you didn't have to do much; you just had to walk there.

"Did you guys bring swimming suits?" Nayoung asked.

"Yeah. It's in our guy bag." Jae answered.

You rolled your eyes.

"Guy bag?" you said, raising an eyebrow.

Ren nodded.

"Yup. It's a bag where we put all of our things in. Nothing special." he shrugged.

"Ah," you replied, nodding. "Makes sense... I guess."

"Wait...," Nayoung said, putting her index finger on her chin. "Why did you guys put it in a bag... instead of wearing it?"

Jae blinked.

"What...?" he said.

"Yeah..." Nayoung said, with a tone that said, isn't-it-obvious?

"Oh, whatever, we're already here anyways," Jae replied, laughing nervously.

Nayoung frowned.

"You're stupid, baboya!" she sighed and rolled her eyes.

Jae ignored her and frolicked into a changing room, with Ren tagging along.

Well, he wasn't frolicking.

Thank goodness for that.

Nayoung turned to face you, and she had an expression on her face that said oh-my-gosh-why-is-he-so-clueless.

"I swear, he can be such a ...," she trailed off as she tried to find the right word to describe him. "Five year old girl." she finished.

"And you like him," you rolled your eyes jokingly.

"Psh, your boyfriend is cuter than you." Nayoung countered.

Before you could retort back, Ren and Jae had dashed back.

"Hey guys! ...You guys still haven't changed?" Jae asked, his eyes wide, and his voice was incredulous, but you could still sense playfulness in his tone.

Nayoung rolled her eyes.

"We're wearing our bikinis underneath our clothes." she answered.

Ren's eyes widened.

"B-bikinis?" he stuttered, staring at you.

You stifled a laugh, while nodding innocently.

"You can't be a woman if you don't have a bikini!" Nayoung said, as a matter of factly.

Ren turned to her.

"Is that...so?" he said, not sure how to respond.

Nayoung nodded.

Ren came over to you, and he wrapped his arm around your waist, kissing the top of your head.

However, this time, there was strength in his grasp, unlike the usual gentleness he had.

You didn't say anything about this, but you had wondered why he had done this.

"Shall we change?" Nayoung suggested.

I blinked out of my thoughts, and nodded.

Turning my head to Ren, I smiled at him, and perkily said, "I'll be back."

"Arasseo," he replied. "Don't take too long."

"I won't," you assured, and followed Nayoung to the changing room.

When you got there, you got into one, and quickly pulled your clothes off.

There was a mirror inside, so you checked yourself, swirling 360 degrees, before stuffing your clothes in your bag, and getting out.

Just when you got out, Nayoung got out as well.

She scanned you, and you scanned her back.

"Not bad." she admired.

You laughed.

"Thanks. You too." you replied.

You two made your way back to Ren and Jae, and when they saw you, their eyes suddenly widened.

For some reason, you felt uneasy, not because of their stares, but because you wondered what Ren thought about you.

Did he think you were cute?

Or adorable?

Or were you just straight up ugly?

"D-do I look okay?" you asked, surprised at your stutter.

Ren gave you a warm smile.

"Yeah, you look beautiful, jagi," he answered, reaching for you.

You felt a blaringly warm sensation in your heart, and you suddenly felt it beat faster and faster.

"Thank you," you replied shyly, hugging him.

When you pulled away, you looked down, and cursed yourself.

Were your s too small for him?

Did he like girls with big s?

Oh my gosh, what if he doesn't like your thighs?

You mercilessly asked yourself these types of questions all day, and they were impossible to dismiss.

Everything that happened just made you more insecure about your body.

There was a place that your group had taken, which was warm, and near the ocean.

There was an umbrella shielding the sun, and a pile of towels were messily thrown over your bag.

You sat down on the blanket, your chin on your knees.

You looked as if you were sulking silently, but you actually weren't.

Ren joined you, his hair wet from the ocean seawater.

You were mesmerized by the sight.

Even when he was swimming, he still looked adorable.

"Anything wrong?" he asked.

"Ani," you replied. "Nothing."

"Why aren't you swimming?"

"I'm resting right now." you said, half-lying.

"Are you thirsty?"

You nodded, feeling the parched, dryness of your throat.

Ren gave a little laugh.

"Okay," he smiled an eyesmile. "What do you want?"

You took a second to think before replying.

"Tea."

"Okay, I'll be right back," Ren said, pulling out a ten won bill from underneath the towels.

You smiled.

"Come back soon."

Ren nodded, and grunted as he stood up, and made his way over to a vending machine.

You turned your head, and gazed at the ocean.

"Hello miss?" you heard a voice call out to you.

You turned your head to see a muscular boy with spiked up, dark hair.

"Me...?"

"Yeah, you, miss. What's your name?"

"Why?" You narrowed your eyes.

"Well, cause my group of guy friends and I wanna hang with you, that's why!" he said cheerfully.

"I have a boyfriend," you replied curtly.

"Doesn't look like he's treating you real well," the guy retorted, without losing the smile on his face.

Your eyebrow twitched, but before you could reply, Ren had answered for you.

"Get lost," he said, his voice rather cold.

"Haha, why would I get lost just because a puny little girl tells me to?" the guy mocked.

I immediately stood up to this.

"Get away. I don't like you, I love him. So frolic off to your other friends, and don't come back. I mean it." you said, your gaze strong and warning.

The guy shrank back a bit.

"Fine, whatever, you momster." he said, snorting, and walking away.

You rolled your eyes, and turned to Ren.

He handed you your tea, and didn't meet your gaze.

"Anything wrong?" you asked, looking up at him.

"It's just that... I wanted to defend myself and you..." he replied, sulking a bit.

Your heart melted at this sight.

Ren looked adorable and manly at the same time.

His cheeks were red, and you couldn't help but get red too.

Since it was confession time, you decided to say something.

"It's okay, Ren," you said, your voice a nervous whisper. "Um, I got really um..." You were too nervous to say, but Ren raised an eyebrow.

"You got really what?" he asked.

"Insecure," you replied after a moment.

Ren's eyes widened. "Why is that?" he asked.

"Erm, well I got insecure because I was wearing a bikini, but I wasn't sure if you liked one pieces or those, so I was really insecure, but then I started to get insecure about my body, and..." you kept blabbering on and on, speaking faster with each second.

Ren laughed, interrupting you, and he grinned.

"It's okay, I'll always think you're beautiful." he murmured to you.

You blushed even more.

"Th-thank you," you stuttered.

He laughed.

That night, it was a campfire.

Your hair was tangled, but you didn't mind.

That was basically everyone's hair.

A blazing, flickering fire shone brilliantly, in the darkness of night.

You had already changed into your fresh pair of clothes, and you had joined everyone in the wonderful art of marshmallow cooking.

You turned it over and over and over, until it was properly roasted.

"Does it taste good?" Ren asked, as you bit into the hot core.

You nodded with a smile.

Then, you rested your head on his shoulder.

"Aigo, this vacation is gonna be so fun with you, jagi." you grinned.

"Really? I think so too." he kissed your forehead.

"I'm so excited."

"Me too," Ren replied, turning his marshmallow.

You finished your marshmallow, and kept your head on his shoulder, but you weren't quite sure when you fell asleep.

Just that you did.
