Spring- Part 2

Unrequited Love

* Saturday *

" Oppa? Does that mean the girl will die? I don't want her to die. That's just sad..." Ah-ra comments as she peeks into the book that her brother was reading.

Shinwoo fixes his glasses and gives a weak smile. He slightly leans his body on the couch and turns to face his little sister.

" Yah. It's just a novel. You don't have to be that affected... are you really sad?" Shinwoo remarks as he places the book down on his lap.

Ah-ra only nods and proceeds to rest her head on her brother's shoulder. Without saying a word, she raises the book back up so that she could also read. Shinwoo tilts his head to the side and smiles. He was glad that Ah-ra was always by his side whenever he was feeling down. He wasn't the type of person to be reading novels or even break down all of a sudden. Having to take care of Ah-ra and at the same time trying to change his ways to treat Dal-rae better was difficult. Time was running out.

" Ah-ra. What if somebody close to you happens to be the main protagonist in this story, what will you do?" Shinwoo makes a remark as he blankly stared into the wordy page.

" Hmm... then I will give my heart to her so that she can live happily ever after with him. She should just get the heart transplant! She's going to make everybody cry and that's very irresponsible you know. How can she leave without telling anyone?! Oh? Oppa?" Ah-ra expresses her emotions with her whole body that she didn't realise she had accidentally slapped her brother in the face with her hair.

Shinwoo pinches his nose as he leans forward trying to relieve the pain that was now on his cheeks. Ah-ra freezes at the side as she sees his red cheeks.

" Sorry. I was just expressing myself..." Ah-ra bit her lips and gently stands up to run away.

" Yah! Go cut that luscious hair of yo-(yours)" Shinwoo who was yelling at his little sister, suddenly gets cut off by a loud banging on the door.

The knock was so loud that even Ah-ra was freaked out by it. For the first time, somebody even knocked on the thick high quality lumber door. Why didn't the person just ring the bell?

" Oh? It's only 12 noon. Baro is here?" Ah-ra confusingly shakes her head as she heads towards the door to open it.

Shinwoo sat still on the couch as he watched his little sister open the door. Ah-ra on the other hand was flabbergasted by the sight she saw. Ji-hae was distraught, her eyes were red and she wasn't even properly dressed up. She was a mess.

" Onni... are you alright?" Ah-ra questions her and turns around to look at her brother who was already standing up.

Ji-hae pushes Ah-ra to the side and barges her way in. Her eyes were already tearing up, swollen; from crying the whole night. She just couldn't understand.

" Tell me. What wrong did I do? Shinwoo sshi!" Ji-hae grabs him by the arms as she screams at him.

The commotion startled Dal-rae who was in her room, preparing herself to meet Sandeul. Upon hearing Ji-hae's voice, she runs down to the living room to see the commotion. Ah-ra was by the door side already sitting down probably from being pushed by Ji-hae.

" Ji-hae, please understand. It's not you. It's me. I have commitment issues." Shinwoo held his breath as he utters those words to the person he loved.

" There's something you're not telling me right? Oh? You're not like this... You can't do this to me..." Ji-hae shakes her head in denial and plops to the floor crying.

" It's over. I'm sorry... Ji-hae. Ah-ra, send her off." Shinwoo shuts his eyes tight as he convinces himself to let her go.

Shinwoo gingerly heads towards his room as he leaves his distraught girlfriend behind. It was really the end for the both of them. Dal-rae immediately runs to Ji-hae's aid. She was sobbing so badly even that didn't make Shinwoo change his mind. Ah-ra upon seeing her brother turn his back against his girlfriend, also rushes to comfort Ji-hae.

" Onni..." Ah-ra calls out to Ji-hae and kneels down by her side.

" Ah-ra..." Ji-hae pushes Dal-rae away from her and turns to hug Ah-ra.

Dal-rae eyes widens as she sees Ji-hae going towards Ah-ra. Her eyes were filled with envy for Ah-ra. Always receiving the love from everyone. It was as if she would never ever face rejection all of her life. Dal-rae slowly stands up, it was as if her presence was useless. She wasn't needed anyway.

" Ah-ra. I'm going out now. Ji-hae onni, take care." Dal-rae emotionlessly spouts those words and grabs her bag.

" Araso. (Ok). Have fun..." Ah-ra turns to look up at her sister who was already at the door wearing her shoes.

Ah-ra gently pats Ji-hae on her back as she cries into her shirt. It was only the beginning of Spring and so many things are happening. Yesterday, it was Shinwoo who was breaking down and now it was Ji-hae. Ah-ra finally realises that her brother must have been upset yesterday after breaking up with his girlfriend.

" It's not true right? Oh? Ah-ra... what's wrong with him?" Ji-hae wipes away her tears as she questions Ah-ra.

" Onni. Don't worry. Oppa...my brother is not that type of person. He loves you." Ah-ra held her by the shoulder as she utters those words.

" It's alright. I'll be going first. I just wanted to hear those words from him. Shin Ah-ra, take care of him for me. He only has you. He lives and breathes for you. Being the director of Shin's fashion, he's really lonely. I'm sorry for showing up like this..." Ji-hae composes herself and weakly stands up.

Lives and breathes only for you.

As soon as Ah-ra sends Ji-hae out of the house, she speeds off to her brother's room. He was on his bed reading the book, as if nothing happened. Shinwoo realises that Ah-ra was staring at him from the door.

" What? It's not as if you've never seen me dump my previous girlfriend's before." Shinwoo bluntly comments as he tries to hide the tinge of hurt in his voice.

" She's different. Oppa, is it because of me? I'm already all grown up! I can take care of myself... I've been destroying every bit of your happiness ever since I was a kid. How my brother sacrificed everything for me, I can't even remember them! What makes you think that I'll be grateful to you my whole life?!" Ah-ra finally bursts after hearing those words.

" What matters now, is the present. You're my little sister, that's why. Even if the world ends, you're still my little sister. Being grateful here is not the problem. Taking care of yourself is not a problem. Like I said, it's me. It's your brother. This is between me and Ji-hae. Let's end the conversation here." Shinwoo calmly places the book by his side as he speaks.

Ah-ra disappointingly observes her brother's cool actions.

" Fine. Go and indulge yourself in that stupid book." Ah-ra stomps back into her room and slams the door loud enough for her brother to hear.

Shinwoo wistfully picks up the book and fixes his glasses.

" You weren't helpful at all. I'm supposed to leave quietly. Just like the main character. So that I wouldn't have a sad ending..." Shinwoo mocks the novel as he continued to read it.

* Sandeul's home *

Baro shakes his head as he watches Sandeul wear his coat. Sandeul bit his lips out of annoyance.

" Yah! It's not like you're the one who's going on a date. Stop making me nervous!" Sandeul turns around to look at his best friend.

" But you look fat in that!" Baro finally releases his inner feelings to Sandeul.

" What?! Yah, this is best outfit that I have. You bought it for me, remember? Oh? All of these clothings, these branded clothings, you bought it for me using your own money and to satisfy your desire of me dressing up in only good clothings. Oh? Did you forget? I've been spending the last 3 hours raiding my closet just because of you, and what are you saying? That I'm fat? So I'm going to have a mental breakdown alone right? So that, I won't be able to go on the date right? Ha...I'm about to throw up right now." Sandeul hits Baro with the hanger as he starts to nag. Once Sandeul starts, he never stops.

Baro giggles at the corner as he watches Sandeul break down. The both of them had been contemplating for the past 3 hours on what Sandeul should wear. From head to toe. Baro was acting like an excited mother sending his son on his first date. From giving advices to every single detail on what a guy should do for a girl when he's going on a date.

" I'm so happy for you! Yah... So what's your plan?" Baro clasps his hands together as he observes Sandeul styling his hair.

" I'm going to tell her that I love her very much...and...and... tell her truth. About my identity. Should I?" Sandeul turns to look at Baro as he utters those words.

" Good idea. Time to leave your past and lead a happy life. It's already 12, I have to go now. See you later!" Baro shares the same sentiments as Sandeul, and seeing that it was time to go and fetch Ah-ra. He leaves.

Sandeul upon seeing that Baro has left, finally heaves a sigh of relief. He was finally able to breathe.

" The weather today is just perfect... Hopefully, today will make up for the foiled first date." Sandeul grins to himself as he spins around the room.

Half an hour later...

Sandeul nervously eyes the clock. It was exactly half an hour past twelve. One and a half more hour to go. Sandeul slowly drags himself to the couch and sluggishly reaches out for the remote control. To kill time, he decides to watch a variety programme. While at it, Sandeul was reminded of the ominous dream last night. It was bugging him on how he wasn't able to take a good look at the girl who died. Furthermore, his mother was the one who pointed the girl out to him.

" Omma... I must have missed you too much. Haha..." Sandeul laughs as if to comfort himself from missing his mother too much.

Sandeul concentrates on the television that was infront of him. He desperately prayed for the time to pass as fast as it could so that he could just run out of the house and head to the place that he had promised to meet Ah-ra. However, it was still too early. Sandeul pouts and raises his hands to look at his watch. It was exactly one. Sandeul heads to the door and wears his shoes. At the corner of his eyes, he sees a paper. It was a checklist written by Baro. Sandeul smirks as he picks up the paper.

" Yes! Time to go out! My bag. Checked. Present. Checked. Hair. Checked. Whatever, I'm going out." Sandeul chucks the paper aside as the checklist was too long.

Sandeul hyperly closes the door behind him. As soon as he looks up, he gets the shock of his life. From smiling, his face gradually turns pale.

" Noona."

" Sandeul-ah, you're going out?" Dal-rae gave her best smile as she fends ignorance. Acting like she didn't know that he was supposed to be going on a date with Ah-ra.

Sandeul only nods and bit his lips.

" That's great! I was really bored at home... I couldn't help but think of my little brother on this perfect day. Sandeul-ah? Am I disturbing you?" Dal-rae stops talking as she sees that Sandeul was in a daze.

Seeing that Dal-rae was in a good mood, he couldn't help but be happy for her. He felt bad about making plans to go out with Ah-ra instead of her. She even travelled all the way here to see him.

" Ah. Noona. You wanted to go out with me?" Sandeul finally lightens up as he heads towards Dal-rae.

" Of course, why did you think I came here for? Let's go!" Dal-rae laughs and at the same time grabs Sandeul's hands.

" Where are we going?" Sandeul panics as he runs along with his sister.

" Somewhere. I'm not telling you!" Dal-rae giggles as she hails for a cab.

Sandeul places his hands on the back of his head as he thought about what he was going to do with Ah-ra. At the same time, he didn't want to disappoint Dal-rae.

On the other hand, Dal-rae was smiling in her heart. Everything was going as per planned. Inwardly, she was smirking at the fact that she was going to enjoy Sandeul's company and at the same time destroy Ah-ra's day. Dal-rae laughed at the thought of Ah-ra getting stood up.

" Hopefully, you will know how it feels to get rejected." Dal-rae thought to herself as she turns to smile at Sandeul.

Sandeul reluctantly enters the cab.

* 2.30 pm *

Ah-ra kicks the sand as she pouts. Sandeul was still out of sight.

" Tsk... where is that kid?" Baro mutters to himself as he watches Ah-ra.

She had been waiting at the entrance for thirty minutes. He had tried to persuade her to at least take a seat at the bench but she was just too stubborn. He was afraid that by the end of the day, the back of feet were going to bleed. She had specially wore heels just for Sandeul. Baro got impatient and heads to Ah-ra.

" Ahgasshi. You should wait in the car. You're going to get blisters." Baro advices her as he concernly stares at her feet.

" Baro sshi, can you call Sandeul for me? I forgot to bring my phone." Ah-ra finally voices out and heads to the bench to sit down. Her legs were killing her.

Without much hesitation, Baro whips out his phone and dials for Sandeul's number.

Baro: Yah! Lee Sandeul, where are you?

Sandeul: Baro! Haiz... Is Ah-ra with you? I've been trying to call her for the past 30 minutes.

Baro: Why are you whispering? Yes. She's with me. She's been standing here like a fool waiting for you.

Sandeul: I can't meet her. Something came up.

Baro: What?! You have to come here! You promised!

Sandeul: Baro-ah. I'm sorry. I'll explain to you later *Dal-rae's voice in the background*

* Hangs up *

Baro freezes as he accidentally overhears Dal-rae's voice in the background. He regretfully turns to look at Ah-ra who was innocently waiting Sandeul. She had been very patient. She didn't complain, she didn't say anything about him being late.

" What am I supposed to do with her?" Baro scratches his head as he observes Ah-ra.

Baro softly approaches her. He was afraid to disappoint her, but he had to do it.

" Ah-ra." Baro calls out for her.

" Eung?" Ah-ra turns to look at him.

" Sandeullie...he's not able to come. Uh...his family from Busan came to visit him. That's why." Baro came up with a lame excuse as he attempts to cover up for his best friend.

" Busan? Ah... so he has a family in Busan. I thought they were all dead." Ah-ra nods her head gently as she tries to grasp hold of the situation.

" Well, distant-relatives. Are you alright?" Baro re-explains himself and at the same time expresses his concern for her.

Ah-ra stands up and heads into the Hampyeong Butterfly Festival entrance. The refreshing smell of blooming flowers greeted her. She nonchalantly walks into the festival without even caring about Sandeul being unable to fulfil his promise to her. He was the one who came up with the idea of going on a date but ends up being unable to attend on a date that he had organised himself.

" Ahgasshi." Baro catches up with Ah-ra.

" So this is how it feels like to be stood up." Ah-ra calmly comments as she turns to look at Baro.

Baro thought hard about how to answer her words. He couldn't hide his feelings of anger towards Sandeul. At the same time, he tried to remain calm so that he wouldn't upset Ah-ra.

" Sorry." those were the only words that could come out of his mouth.

" Sorry? Why are you saying sorry? Cha Baro, looks like it's you and me. Cheer up." Ah-ra brightens up and places her arms around her hips.

Baro raises his eyebrows as he observes her actions. Hooking arms?

" You want me to hook arms with you?" Baro questions her as he blushes.

" Couples enter for free. Look." Ah-ra points to the poster that was on the pole.

Baro pushes Ah-ra's head as he jumps to look at the poster.

Couples enter for free.

" For a moment, I thought you were joking. Let's go. Woo~" Baro chuckles as he grabs her hands.

(A/N: Haha... I'm really looking forward to writing about Baro and Ah-ra's date. Don't worry, we'll see Jinyoung in the next chapter or maybe in next next one. He has a mission, hence missing from this chapter. Plus, in the next chapter, we'll find out about where Dal-rae brought Sandeul. Evil sister...haha.)
