The Light in the Dark [Discontinued Indefinitely]

[Sooyoung’s POV]

“Ready or not here I come!” I shouted throughout the house. It was dead silent aside from the occasional creak of the floorboards as I wandered through the house looking for the two small girls.

So here I was, playing hide and seek with the two kids. They should be in school, but I decided to let them stay home since they were still shaken about what happened. Well that, and I was also paranoid about leaving them alone. I couldn’t bear to imagine what could happen, nor did I really want to.

I searched behind the couch and under tables looking for them.

As I walked by the pantry, I heard a soft shuffling coming from the pantry.

Smirking, I walked aimlessly around the kitchen.

“Hmm, wherever could they be?” I stated loudly and opened a few cupboards.

After a few moments I made my way towards the pantry, standing just in front of the door. A light sneeze was then heard and I couldn't help but laugh as I opened the door to reveal a small girl with glasses, rubbing her nose.

She simply looked up at me readjusting her glasses. “We really need to clean out this pantry Unnie, it's so dusty in here.” she explained, getting up and brushing herself off, not really caring she just got caught.

Seohyun was never really good at this game but was cute nonetheless.

“Hmm maybe we’ll clean this up later, but now we got to find Yoon.”

She nodded and began helping me look around.

Now Yoona was definitely good at this game. It once took me nearly a half hour to find her. She hid in places that I didn't even know existed in this house.

After about 20 minutes I was growing restless and the little girl was nowhere to be found.

Seohyun already gave up and was sitting on the couch, reading a book.

I sighed and sat down next to her.

“Unnie, I think we should jut give up. Yoong Unnie won't come out unless we do.” she stated.

“Maybe you’re right.” I thought when an idea suddenly struck me.

“I think we should take a break? Why don’t we go get some ice-cream then come back and find Yoona?” I asked the small girl.

She looked up at me curiously, then caught what I was doing.

“That sounds good Unnie, all of this is making me hungry...” she played along.

I nodded. “Okay then, why don’t you get ready?”

She agreed and went towards her room.

“Hmm... too bad Yoon won’t be able to join us... oh well...” I stated loudly.

I was surprised that it remained silent. I wondered if my plan was going to work.

Seohyun returned with her jacket and sat

I decided to continue the act. “So Seo, what kind of ice-cream do you want? Chocolate, vanilla... or perhaps cotton candy...” I went on labelling all of Yoona’s favourite flavours, hoping she’d come out.

After a few moments, I sighed ready to give up when suddenly a loud bang and wailing broke the silence and before I could turn, a small body wrapped itself around me.

“Yoona wants ice-cream too!!!” she pouted and whined, jumping up and down at my side.

I chuckled and pat her on the head. “Found you.” I teased.

She just stared up at me blankly, realizing what was going on.

“Hey! Y-you-you tricked me!” she cried and began hitting me with her small fists.

I just laughed and knelt down to her eye level. “Okay I’m sorry, let’s really go get some ice-cream then.” I reasoned with her and she beamed, bouncing excitedly.

Seohyun just shook her head at her childish sister.

“Let’s go!!” Yoona eagerly cheered and ran out the front door.

“Yah! Yoona! You forgot your sweater!” I ran after the girl and she turned with a finger on her lips and big eyes.

“Oops.”

I sighed and watched her run back into the house to grab her sweater.

I knew that they were still upset about what happened yesterday, but I will do everything to keep those smiles on their faces and the innocence in their eyes.

“ICE-CREAM!” Yoona shouted, breaking my thoughts and Seohyun followed suit.

-------

“Ice-cream! Ice-cream!” Yoona continued to chant happily, kicking her legs in her seat.

“Unnie, you’re so loud... you’ll distract Sooyoung-unnie and we’ll get into an accident if you keep doing that.” Seohyun scolded the playful girl who instantly went silent.

I chuckled and continued to focus on the road, silently thanking Seohyun for quieting down her sister, though I was pretty used to it by now. It was like nothing changed, giving me a little hope, not a lot, but enough to believe that things will be back to normal again.

“Hey guys, I’m just going to stop by the grocery store first, so I can get some things for your lunches, then we’ll go get ice-cream. Sound good?” I asked them, knowing already what the answer was.

Yoona was ready to protest, but Seohyun covered and nodded. “That’s fine Unnie.”

I smiled and we went inside with them.

Yoona had a visibly sour look on her face, while Seohyun remained neutral.

“Okay... so bread, cheese, juice boxes...” I mumbled quietly to myself, while grabbing things off the shelf.

As we weaved through the aisles, I couldn’t help but notice a young woman with a light coat and scarf wrapped around her face, trying to reach for something from the top shelf. I couldn’t help but watched with an amused expression as she continued to hop for the can of whatever it was.

I could tell that she was frustrated and she began to climb up onto the shelf. This alarmed me.

Is she crazy? I noticed the shelf was tipping and without further hesitation, I abandoned my cart and quickly caught her and steadied the shelf. The weight however forced my glasses to fall from my face.

She squealed and had her eyes shut tight.

“Are you okay?” I asked with concern.

She must have realised someone caught her because she slowly opened her eyes and we locked eyes for a brief moment.

“Jessica?” I asked, instantly recognized the girl in my arms.

She just stared blankly up at me. Her face was a little red; I assumed it was from the sudden adrenaline rush and I stood her up straight.

“Hello? Earth to Jessica?” I waved my hand in front of her face and she blinked a few times, finally responding.

“S-Sooyoung?” she stuttered.

“Yes?” I nodded.

“O-oh, well... sorry... I m-mean thanks. What are y-you doing here?” she sputtered out.

I chuckled and scratched the back of my head.

“I was just shopping for the kids.” I pointed to the two curious kids behind me. “What about you?”

“Ah, I was just shopping myself...” she replied, pointing to the basket on the floor.

“Hey! It’s Weird, Stinky Unnie!” Yoona shouted, pointing at Jessica.

“Yah!”

I stifled back a laugh as Jessica glared at her.

“Her name is Jessica. Be nice and apologize.” I scolded her.

Yoona just crossed her arms, keeping her head down.

“Apologize or no ice-cream.”

Yoona instantly raised her head and pouted. “B-but Unnie!”

“Yoona...” I tapped my foot.

She just let out a loud sigh. “I’m sorry...” she mumbled.

“Yoona...”

“Okay, I’m sorry!” she apologized.

Jessica just shrugged and I assumed that she accepted it.

“Okay, now that that’s settled... did you want to join us Jessica?” I asked her and she was startled by my offer.

“Oh... well... uh...” she had her head down, unsure how to answer.

“Well I won’t take no for an answer.” I grinned.

“Okay fine... I guess.” she instantly became cold which confused me. She was so cute acting shy a little while ago. I wonder if it’s because of what Yoon said. I shrugged off the idea.

I felt a small tug on my pant leg and I looked down at Seohyun who was holding my glasses.

“You dropped these Unnie.”

I took them from her and pat her head. “Oh, thanks Seo.”

She smiled gently up at me and I couldn’t help but return it. It’s not that she didn’t smile, but it was rare to see such a genuine one. She soon returned to her neutral state when her sister popped up between us.

“Yoona wants ice-cream please...” she now was begging.

“Okay, okay, let’s pay for these and go.”

------

[Jessica’s POV]

We were now in the ice-cream shop not far from the grocery store and the little brat named Yoona finally was quiet as she finally got what she was whining for.

Sooyoung had insisted that I get something, but I courteously refused her offer.

“If you’re not getting anything, than neither am I.” She firmly stated.

I sighed. “Sooyoung, really... I’m fine. I’m not even hun--“ before I could finish my sentence, my stomach let out a loud growl.

The entire table was silent, when suddenly everyone burst out laughing. I lowered my head embarrassed.

“Your stomach seems to prove otherwise.” She chuckled and stood up and walked towards the counter. A few minutes later she returned with a sundae topped with strawberry and fudge.

“Sorry it’s not really a meal, but it’s all they have.” She explained,

“Y-you really d-didn’t have to—umph!” I stopped when I felt a cold spoon of sweetness was stuffed into my mouth.

“Yummy?” Sooyoung smiled and pulled the spoon from my mouth.

I just nodded and turned away, embarrassed... again.

I glanced at her and noticed that she was eating it with the same spoon.

Wouldn’t that be and indirect... no! Stop thinking so weirdly Jessica.’ I lightly hit my forehead and Sooyoung looked at me curiously.

“You okay Jessica?” she asked innocently.

“Y-yeah! Just a brain freeze...” I lamely responded and she believed me and continued eating.

I only could stare at her.

‘What a weird vampire...’

“Are you going to have some, or do I have to feed you again?” she asked, almost like a threat.

I shook my head vigorously, grabbing the other spoon and dug in.

Eating the scoop, I noticed something. I don’t know if it was just me, but the scoop she gave me somehow tasted...

Sweeter.
