Like mother like daughter

Geeks For Hoops

Time was a bit slow for Kaide but the men outside seem to be at a good pace. Every 15 minutes one of the workers would be done. Kaide got a magazine and began leisurely flipping through it. If she only knew, it would take awhile she would have brought some of her research to look at… which suddenly reminded her…

“Mom, is it okay if I can have a classmate over to work on that project I was telling you about?” Kaide asked.  Her mother looked at her and grinned.

“Sure, sweet heart! Himchan can come over for your project!” She smiled again.

“Mom, not Himchan. He isn’t my partner. Her name is Junsol. Gosh mother, how can you even assume it Himchan?!” Kaide said who was not even a bit amused at her mother’s false assumption.

“I don’t know. He seems like a nice young man. I was assuming that was your way of getting him to be your boyfriend or something.” She said.

“Oh my g- Mom! I don’t think I am his type! He’s just my classmate, mom. That’s it!” She whispered violently to her.

“Goodness dear, I met your father in high school and we were boyfriend and girlfriend. I think you should get one soon. Himchan seems like a good candidate.” Her mother smiled.

“Can we just drop the Himchan subject, mom? It’s getting on my nerves.” Kaide rolled her eyes.

“Suit yourself. I think you are missing an opportunity to be with a good looking young man.” Her mother shrugged. Kaide looked at her mom and shook her head.

All the ladies were looking out the big glass window, watching the men at work. Kaide couldn’t help but look as well. She got a clear view of Himchan and she could see the sweat on his eyebrows. ‘He looks so handsome when he’s concentrating… and very muscular… Oh GOSH! Am I on crack?!’ She thought. Himchan used the back of his hands to take of his sweat and looked towards the waiting room. He saw Kaide dazing at him and couldn’t help but grin then waved at her. Kaide snapped out of it and bit her lip then flip the magazine pages violently. ‘Now I know why all these aunties and their daughters are here…’ She thought to herself. ‘So… she was staring at me… Keep looking Kaide, keep looking.’ He tried to grin.

Kaide took a step outside; she was feeling to stuffy inside. She felt there were too much female hormones inside waiting to be burst well other than her mother. On the corner of her eye, she sees a familiar figure in the passenger seat. ‘Jae Mi…’ She eyed the car and hurried back in. ‘Where’s my mom? Hm… maybe in the bathroom.’ She thought and took a seat.

“Hey mom, isn’t this great? Just the 2 of us going to wait at this shop so I can see my future boyfriend and his father working.” Jae Mi smirked at her mother.

“Yes sweetheart, and we must seat at the usual spot where we can get a good look at them.” Her mother said.

“Excuse me, young man. I need an oil change and whatever needs fixing.” Jae Mi’s mother said with a smile.

“Sure, may I have your car keys?” JongUp said.

“Here you go. And! By any chance, is your father around?” She fluttered her eyes.

“Yes…” JongUp said slowly feeling uncomfortable. “But he is working on a car right now. Why don’t you ladies take a seat.”

“Sure.” She smiled.

Obviously the ladies in the room were annoyed at Jae Mi and her mother’s presence. They didn’t want them being in the same room with them. Jae Mi’s mother had a tendence to say rude, hurtful things to the other mothers along with their daughters but no one just didn’t want to deal with it.

“Oh poo!” Jae Mi looked at disgust.

“What’s wrong?” She asked.

“That loser in school, I was telling you about is sitting in our spot.” She pouted.

“Don’t worry dear. Let me handle this. YAH!” Her mother walks up to Kaide kicking her shoe.

“Excuse you, YOU STUPID OLD HAG! Did you forget your glasses or something and think it’s okay to kick me!!!” Kaide said in bewilderment.

“Wha- What did you say to me?!” Jae Mi’s mother said who was clearly appalled.

“Stupid… Old… Ha-” Kaide stood up while repeating herself slowly but then was shortly cut off.

“Kaide.” Her mother sternly warns her daughter and walks over to her.

“Well, well, well… If it isn’t Mina.” Jae Mi’s mother smirked as she crossed her arms.

“SooYoung, how nice to see you.” Mina said sarcastically.

“Mom, you know this blind hag?” Kaide asked her mom in awe struck.

“Blind hag?” Mina asked trying to hold her laugh.

“Yeah, this ugly; I mean attractively disabled lady thinks it was okay to kick me.” Kaide said in anger.

“Hey! Stop calling my mother names! You-” Jae Mi began.

“You what?” Kaide began cracking her knuckles.

“Kaide… Calm down, sweetie.” Mina laughs.

“I think you should sustain your daughter or maybe put her in juvenile jail!” SooYoung said, pointing her finger at Kaide.

“Don’t you dare, point at my daughter.” Mina warned by poking hard on two pressure points in SooYoung’s arm causing it to be weakened.

“What did you do to me! I can’t feel my arm!” She yelled in pain.

“Mother!” Jae Mi screamed while massaging her mother’s arm.

“Don’t worry, you will start to get feeling on your arm in 5 minutes. But I  am warning you, SooYoung…” Mina began pointing at SooYoung’s face. “Kick, point, or do something to hurt my daughter… I promise you that arm of yours will not have any more feelings; I can guarantee you that. Now sit over there and shut your trap.”

Both Jae Mi and her mother quickly obliged to Mina’s words. All the ladies in the room smiled at Mina.

“Wow mom, you never told me you knew striking pressure points.” Kaide said in awe. “I see where I get it from.”

“Well you see…” Her mother began with a chuckle. “While most mothers would have their daughters play an instrument and have ballet lessons, I wanted you to learn how to defend yourself. You didn’t really get your martial arts from me. What you actually got was: my mouth.”

“I love you, mom. You’re the best.” She rested her head on her mom’s shoulder.

“I am the best, don’t you forget it.” She kissed her daughter’s forehead.

“So how do you know her?” Kaide asked.

“Well, we were in high school together…” Mina began.

“Oh jeez, I bet it was a nightmare.” Kaide sighed.

“Oh it was. She had a crush on your father but ended up choosing me somehow. You father was sure persistent. I never even looked his way until he confessed. SooYoung  hated me ever since then even so we never got along from the beginning.” Mina chuckled.

“Like mother like daughter.” Kaide smiled.

“Kaide.” Himchan called. “Your car is ready.”

“Thanks, Himchan.” She smiled. Mina got up and paid for the maintenance.

“Wow that was fast.” Mina turned to Himchan.

“I tried to be.” Himchan smiled. There was a loud ring and Mina picked up the phone.

“I’ll be right back.” She said, walking to a quieter place.

“So… What’s the occasion?” Himchan said looking at Kaide up and down.

“Scholarship and will you stop looking at me like that?! You are making me feel uncomfortable.” She said looking away.

“What? I can’t help it. You look different and beautiful… Who knew a tough nail like you, could turn out to have a body.” Himchan said, giving a small on his bottom lip.

“You make it sound erted.” Kaide said while her face was turning red.

“I’m trying not to.” He smirked at her.

“Oh gosh, go away.” She lightly pushed him but he catches her hand.

“The further you push me, for some odd reason; I will be coming back.” He held her hand and looked at her eyes. She snatched her arm and at the same time her mother comes back.

“Thanks again.” She shook Himchan’s hand. “Oh yes, my daughter isn’t seeing anyone.”

“Mother!” Kaide hissed.

“Really?” Himchan smiled. “When then, I’ll you on Monday then.”

And with that he winked at her. Kaide just rolled her eyes and gets in the car. ‘Stupid mother! Why would she say that! I can’t go back to school because of her now.’ She thought.

“He is really a nice young man.” Mina cooed at her daughter pinching her cheeks.

“Mom, can you be more embarrassing!” Kaide said burying her face in her hands.

“Come on dear, look at you. You’re blushing!” She laughed.

“Mom?” Kaide said with a fake smile.

“Yes, dear?” She smiled back.

“Just drive already.” Kaide said taking the smile off and putting on a straight face.
