“Alright it’s time to go now.” The young woman said.

Internationally, she’s still a teenager, but since she’s Korean, she is already considered an adult for she is already 20 years old. Well, Korean age is quite different from the international age since Koreans are already considered a year old when they were born. Another difference is that all of them turn a year older during the New Year’s Day. So this makes the majority of Koreans aging up just a few months before their birthday.

After the butler packed her things, he opened the car door for her. She sat in the backseat because a) she’s still not close to her butler, and b) because some of her things were put in there since the trunk is already full. She took one last glance at her parents and her little brother, waved them goodbye, and entered the car. She is still unsure about what will happen to her, but she is excited at the same time. The feeling can be described as ‘nervouscited’ a term coined by Pinkie Pie, a cartoon character.

Her butler looked at her and asked, “Ms. Yerim, are you ready to go?”

“Yes I guess so, but please call me Yeri.” Yerim, or Yeri rather, hesitantly answered then she put a mint candy in .

Her butler nodded and started the engine. Although he seems human, he is actually an android. Thanks to his creator, he became one of those first robots to overcome the uncanny valley. By the definition, uncanny valley is a phenomenon where a computer generated figure or a robot bearing a near-identical human features arouses a sense of uneasiness or revulsion in the person viewing it. It’s really easy for him to blend in the crowd due to his accurate human behaviour and proportional body. Again thanks to his creator which is actually Yeri’s adoptive cousin.

Yeri’s adoptive family were the owners of a huge tech company who researches and produces different kinds of robots. From cleaning robots to robots use in war they made it. One of these robots is BI, who is Year’s butler. He is actually the first of his kind to be created thus the Roman numeral I on his name in his name. Since using Roman numerals is quite lengthy (e.g. LXXXVIII means 89), it was decided that only androids with one letter Roman numeral will only use the Roman numeral system. The rest uses the Hindu-Arabic number system. The B in his name stands for butler and this naming technique was use by other robots like the cleaning robots which uses the letter C. He was originally a faceless android used by Yeri’s family which got damaged for a while and repaired by Yeri’s cousin after a few years then gave him a human appearance.

The ride was kind of awkward due to none of them initiating a conversation. Minutes passed and BI’s phone rang. Why is he using a phone? Can’t he just connect the call to his processor? Yeri wondered. After taking the call he turned back to Yeri.

“Your mother said that they will be delayed an hour due to some problems in the office. Do you want to go somewhere?” He asked.

“No.” She said.

BI turned around and continued driving, but this time it’s slower.

Yeri is still not used to calling another person mom or dad. Even though the family structure is kinda similar, she feels that she will probably take a long time to adjust. Kinda similar family structure because it consists of a father, a mother, and a brother – something what people called a nuclear family. The only difference is that she got an older brother instead of a younger. Well at least she got someone to depend on instead of her little brother, Beomgyu, whining at her all the time. Another good thing is that his brother is quite charming, not that his little brother isn’t charming (probably because of his childish behaviour). His little brother actually just debuted as an idol so he’s not there to send her off. Anyway, his older brother, Junmyeon is a nominee for being the governor of their place. HE is still young, but that’s what the Chaebol Isles needed.

Chaebol is a Korean word referring to a large family-owned business conglomerate. Yeri heard this place occasionally in the news, but she didn’t really look through it. The only time she did it was when she studied a debate topic about the heir of a huge broadcasting station named Lee Taemin who was in prison due to a series of crimes he was involved in around 6 years ago. Chaebol Isles is an archipelago occupied by the top 100 wealthiest Korean families with their necessities. Yeri’s adoptive family is included in those 100 families. Specifically, they rank 5th. Since they are a tech company, only the rich ones were able to buy from them, thus making them earn quite a large sum of money. Those rich ones include governments buying war robots, infrastructure-based and factory-based companies buying assembling robots, and their fellow wealthy families using the butler robots. In short, they’re super rich.

After that call, Yeri got bored knowing that she had an extra hour of waiting. She decided that she wants to listen to music. Unfortunately, she forgot it back at her old house. Even though she wants to get it back, she’s too shy to tell BI. Nevermind, at least I can play some games. Oh wait I can’t, it will make me nauseous. How about I sleep instead? Nope. We might get into an accident and I might die because I’m not aware of my surroundings. I’ll just probably review my notes. That is the inner workings of Yeri’s mind. She frequently has debates going on in her mind probably due to her fear of failing. She got this habit from being a debate contestant and a chess player. She developed a habit of foreseeing every consequence of her actions so it’s quite rare to see her being careless.

The notes she was referring to was actually given by her adoptive parents. It was a list of answers to questions regarding her fake identity. She will play the role of the youngest child of the owner of the biggest Korean tech company. That’s quite a heavy role to play. Originally, her parents got a daughter who went missing and presumably dead. Now, she’s playing the role of that girl. The name is Kim Yeoreum.

The notes were quite long so Yeri is having a difficult time learning it. To summarize it, the story is: Yeri lost her memories a few years ago because of an accident, and was sent to the mainland for her therapy. Quite simple since it is only a summary. Details of the accident include the “WH” questions of the happening. There were also oddly specific details like, which part of the brain got hurt, and many other hard to remember details. There were also details about her past life like the name of her relatives were (which she finds quite hard to memorize), her friends, and that one part where she seems to be bothered the most. It’s the name of her fiancé.

There were no pictures included in the notes for the privacy of the wealthy in case of a leak. Because of this, she doesn’t know what her friends, relatives, and especially her fiancé looks like. She tried searching their names in social network sites, but she can’t find a single picture of them. She is quite nervous on what that Jung Jaehyun guy looks like.

Most people will say that looks don't matter, but they always prefer the good-looking ones over the plain looks. Hypocrites. Well that is quite the case for Yeri. Probably stemmed from stereotypes she saw in movies. Well she does care for looks, but she still keeps in mind the attitude of the guy she likes. Actually she still doesn’t have an ideal type, but that might change starting today.

BI noticed that Yeri was reading some papers. From his view, he estimated that it was a 13-paged A4 bond paper, and it was full of text from top to the bottom of the page. The letters were in Calibri and have a font size of 11. Kinda like a thesis of a college student. This looks long but a chapter in King Arthur is still longer than this.

“What are you reading Ms. Yeri?” BI asked.

“Oh it’s the notes that father gave me.” Yeri said the word “father” hesistantly.

“May I ask why did you print it? Young people nowadays prefer to read digitally.”

“Well I believe that I can learn faster when reading in paper than in my phone since I won’t be distracted.”

Silence engulfed the car again. Yeri thought that this will last for the rest of the ride, but she is wrong. BI asked her a question again.

“Are you nervous?”

“Very.”

“Even after you met them a couple of times already?”

“Still yes.”

Yeri met her adoptive family a couple of times already. The first one was after her debate contest in which her team only got second place. It was Junmyeon who she first met. She recalled it as a kinda weird and embarrassing encounter.

“And it’s now the time to announce the winner. Who do you think will be the champion for this year’s National Debate Competition?” The MC cheerfully asked.

Cheers erupted from all sides of the auditorium. Well that was from the supporters, the remaining teams on the other hand, were all nervous. Some of them were praying, others just closed their eyes. There are two teams with each having six contestants. Yeri, along with her teammates and friends, Suhyun and Saeron belong to team number 13, an unlucky number. All of them go to the same school and the same class so they were close. Between them, only Yeri wasn’t nervous. She just silently ate a mint candy, which she believes will make her mind active, kinda like drugs but as a placebo effect.

“The winner for this year’s National Debate Competition is…” The MC purposely cut off his words for dramatic effect

“TEAM 18”

The winning team plus their supporters jumped with joy. The losing team on the other hand were obviously sad. They were sad, but they didn’t show it that much except for Suhyun who was crying. Saeron, on the other hand, was worrying since her mother will probably beat her again. Yeri doesn’t seem to react much. She doesn’t show it, but she is regretful that they didn’t win this year, but at least they won last year and there is still another year. But that’s what she thought.

A handsome man in a dashing suit came walking towards her. S
