Nine - Min-min what?
let me hear your thoughtsLittle Jimin looked at her babysitter with wide eyes. Her worn-out crocodile plushie clutched in her little fingers.
"Taeng-taengyeong? Unnie?"
The teenager smiled pinching the little girl’s cheeks.
"No, it’s Tae-yeon unnie."
"Taenj-jeong unnie?"
The older shakes her head. "You’re adorable. Okay, let’s try it again. Taeeee-", the girl prompts the kid to repeat after her.
"Taeeee—"
"Yeonn"
"Yeonnnn"
"Unnie. Taeyeon unnie"
"Taengoo unnie." The girl grinning looking proud of herself.
"Okay kid you’re a lost cause, I’d let you call me Taengo unnie then." The teenager giggles.
"Will you live here with me now?" The kid asks, prompting to sit on Taeyeon’s lap.
"No, but you’ll see me every day now." Taeyeon combs through little Jimin’s hair.
"How old are you? Are you grown up already?"
"I’m 18 but I don’t know if that’s grown up enough."
"How many fingers is 18?"
"Uh, here—", Taeyeon shows 10 fingers, "–then, add this." She said as she folds two fingers, showing the remaining 8.
"How about you Jimin-ie? How old are you?"
The girl drops her plushie to free both her hands showing Taeyeon five fingers on her right and two fingers on her left.
"Ah, so you’re a big girl already. I bet you have a lot of friends at school." Taeyeon mused, bouncing her knees to rock the child on her lap.
"I don’t go to school, my teacher comes here."
Taeyeon vaguely recalls Jimin’s parents mentioning homeschooling. She suddenly felt sad for the little girl, because she’d miss the experience of running around with friends at school or the act of making friends itself. It must be sad.
"It’s not. I’m not sad. I have you now." The girl tells her, little arms enveloping her in a tight hug.
Taeyeon, not realizing the girl just answered her thoughts, hugged back.
"Yes, you have me now! Oh, and do you know I have a baby sister too? I only get to see her sometimes because she lives with my mommy, but I can bring her with me sometimes. We can all play together! Would that be nice?"
"Can we make forts?" Jimin looks at her excitedly.
-
"Ta-Taengo unnie?"
"Jimin-ie? Oh my God, Jimin!" Taeyeon rushed towards the girl, enveloping her in a tight hug.
"You're so big now, I can't believe it. And so pretty!" Karina smiles widely at her, still holding Taeyeon in her arms.
"I can't believe I'll see you here! You're—" Karina pauses, looking at Winter who's looking at them confused.
"You're Winter's sister?" Karina finishes.
"You don't remember each other?" Taeyeon asks, now looking at her sister as well.
"Remember each other? We know each other?" Karina asks back.
"Ah, that's sad! You used to be so attached to the hip. Don't you remember anything about each other?" Taeyeon asks, still surprised at seeing Jimin, all grown up.
"Let me take that." Taeyeon takes the paper bags both girls were holding, goes to the counter, grabs her wallet, phone, and keys. She pulls both girls outside the shop, flipping the sign to face Closed, locking the door behind them.
A few minutes later the three found themselves sitting in a nearby coffee shop.
"I- I still can't believe it. You've grown up so well." She reaches for Karina's hand, which the other girl holds earnestly.
"Unnie, you're saying you know Karina-unnie? And that we know each other too?" Winter asks.
"Karina?" Taeyeon asks, unfamiliar with the name.
"Ah, I'm using my baptismal name now, unnie." Karina explains. She sees Taeyeon nod in understanding.
"How did you know each other?" Winter continues her parade of questions.
"I used to babysit her when she was–" Taeyeon pauses to think, "–six or seven? I can't recall. But that was when I moved out from us so I had to work part-time while studying." Taeyeon explains.
"And yes, you know each other, because I used to bring you to their house every weekend, whenever mom would allow me to take you." Taeyeon adds.
That's weird. Winter thinks.
"You really don't remember? I mean, yeah, you were still a baby back then, you even drink your milk from a sippy cup." Taeyeon teases, causing Karina to giggle whilst gauging Winter's reaction.
"How about you Jimin-ie, you can't remember Minjeong?"
"Oh my God, is she Min-min baby?" Karina exclaims, somehow, Taeyeon saying Winter's Korean name digs a memory she never really remembered until today.
"Min-min what?" Winter reacts, blushing in her seat.
"Min-min baby!" Karina repeats.
"Remember you'd get angry with me because I would always ask you which Min-min needs something, and you'd always
