Chapter 11 (Junsu)

Blessings from Blizzards?

Junsu

Junsu pulled Robyn out of the hole in the ice and dragged her a little ways away from it.  How on earth had she managed to hang on to her glasses?  It was funny, the things his mind noticed and stuck on at a time like this.  Robyn was unconscious, shivering, and literally turning blue from the cold.  He had to get her out of the wind.  He looked around.  They weren’t going to make it back to the hotel, but they might – wait.  The cabin.  That cabin would be perfect to wait out the storm.  He just hoped Robyn didn’t freeze to death before he could get her warmed up.

He managed to put Robyn on his back and carry her over to the cabin.  She was heavier than he had expected.  He opened the door and set her down inside.  Just great.  Her outer clothes had started to freeze.  That couldn’t be good for her.  Junsu shut the door, bolted it, and looked around the cabin.  There was firewood and a fireplace.  That was good news.  He found flint and steel and got a fire going.  Thank goodness for that Japanese wilderness survival TV show they had taped.  It had never aired due to the break-up, but they had at least been taught how to build a fire and ward off hypothermia.  With that thought, he turned around to check on Robyn.  He didn’t see her chest moving and when he put his hand under nose, he didn’t feel her breath.  He panicked for a moment then let out a relieved sigh.  She had a pulse.  It was weak, but it was there.  He finally noticed her extremely shallow breathing.  That worried him.  She was too cold.  He had to warm her up somehow.

There was a blanket on top of the stack of firewood.  That wasn’t going to do her much good.  Robyn’s clothes were the problem.  She was soaked to the skin.  Junsu didn’t like what he was going to have to do.  He took off her wet coat and set it out to dry on top of the firewood.

“I’m sorry,” he whispered to her, knowing full well she couldn’t hear him.  Junsu kept his eyes on the ceiling of the cabin as much as was possible while he took her shirt off and set it aside.  Unfortunately, since he wasn’t able to look at her, he couldn’t see where the button on her jeans was.  And his mind kept drawing pictures of the areas of skin his hands touched.  Stop it.  She can’t be more than 16 or 17, which means she’s a minor.  And you’re having indecent thoughts about a minor.  He managed to get her clothes off and wrap the blanket around her.  Taking off her undergarments was the hardest part.  He had had to think about lyrics to a song he was writing for a drama to take his mind off of what he was doing.  He scooted her closer to the fire and sat down next to her, shivering.  He was soaked, too.  After a few moments of debate (during which the logical part of his mind was thoroughly against his moral judgment side), he stripped off his clothes and climbed into the blanket with Robyn.  Man, she was freezing.  Her skin felt like ice.  That sobered him, a little.  He wrapped his arms around her and rubbed her back to try and warm her up.  It occurred to him that the area around her heart was not the only part of her that needed warmth.  He didn’t want her to get frostbite or lose a limb to the cold.  He did everything he could to keep his mind off what he was doing.  He composed a song, ran lines for a musical he was going to be in, mentally choreographed a dance to the song he composed: all to keep himself from thinking about the girl in his arms.  He did such a good job of distracting himself that he almost didn’t notice when the temperature of her skin changed from icy to warm.  Almost.  How long was this stupid blizzard going to last, anyway?

Robyn’s mind felt hazy.  She was warm.  Very warm.  Normally, she would have been uncomfortable.  But this warmth was pleasant.  That was strange.  She usually hated being too warm.  Her thoughts came slowly, like she was trying to think through a dense fog.  What exactly had happened?  She remembered the blizzard starting and falling into the lake, but nothing after that.  She must be in the hospital.  They must’ve been rescued and that was why she was so warm.  She felt hands running up and down her back.  The nurses must be trying to get her blood flowing better.  The hands moved to her legs, and then to her arms, and to her back again.  She realized she wasn’t wearing any clothes.  That bothered her for a moment.  No matter, the nurses must have taken her wet clothes off to keep her from losing too much body heat.  That was the proper thing to do for someone in her situation.  There was a heat source so close to her that they were touching.  That was odd.  The heat source felt strange.  She tried to think of what it could be, but her brain wasn’t functioning correctly.  It was getting clearer, though.  Where was the light?  There seemed to be flickering light source nearby, but it wasn’t very bright.  The hospital should have bright lights.  Maybe the power had gone out.  But wouldn’t they have a back up generator?  It strained credulity to think that the back up generator was out, too.  Her mind tried to focus on that, but it went back to the impossibly close heat source.  There was something comforting in the way the heat source enveloped her.  But, it felt strange.  It felt like…skin.  Yes, that’s what it felt like.  That wasn’t a heat source; it was a person.  A person.  What was going on?

Robyn opened her eyes.  The first things she saw were Junsu’s dolphin shaped eyes staring back at her.  The person keeping her warm was Junsu?  Her mind felt numb.  She should be more shocked at that revelation.  The only feeling she could muster was a mild curiosity over the strained look in his eyes.  What was that emotion she saw in them?  Their faces were so close they were almost touching.  Had they always been that close, or had Junsu moved closer to her?  The hands on her back had stopped.  She could feel his breath on her lips.  Junsu had definitely moved closer.  His eyes bored into hers.  She tried to make her mind work, but it refused.  Something was off here, but she couldn’t figure out what it was.  She felt Junsu’s lips touch hers and all thoughts flew out of her head.  The next thing she knew, he was on top of her.  Her mind snapped back to reality.  She managed to get her arms out from under his hands and pushed him off of her.  The blanket unwrapped and she grabbed it and covered herself with it before he could see her.

“What was that for?”  She had trouble catching her breath.  She looked away from him.  She could hear that he was breathing just as heavily as she was.  She felt the blood rise to her face.  What on earth had possessed him to do that?  He stole her first kiss!  Now that she could think again, Robyn was angry.  He had no right to try that crap with her.  It didn’t matter that he was sweet or he had a wonderful voice or chest muscles that were somehow toned and soft at the same time.  She caught herself peeking at his chest and abs from the corner of her eye and blushed harder.

“I-I’m sorry.  I don’t know why I did that.  Please forgive me?”  He sounded really sorry.  Robyn sighed.  Junsu must’ve carried her to the cabin after she fell in the lake.  He saved her life.  Could she really stay mad at him over a kiss?  She looked over at him.  He had grabbed his jacket off the woodpile and covered himself with it.  Why did he have to look like that when he asked for forgiveness?  What girl in her right mind could stay angry with him if he looked at her like that?  She sighed again.  It had been a wonderful kiss.

“It’s okay.  Let’s just not talk about it, okay?”

            “Okay.  But, I’m really sorry.”

“I said I didn’t want to talk about it.”

            “Okay.”

She closed her eyes.  Of all the people in the world to steal her first kiss, why-?  She stopped herself.  That was a stupid question.  If she had to have been in that situation with someone, Junsu would have been one of her top picks.  But that was before the kiss.  She hadn’t thought he would do something like that.  She looked over at him again.  He was shivering in the cold.

“How long have we been here?”

“About an hour.  It took me a while to get the fire started.”  She realized how lucky they were to have been so close to this place.  She caught herself staring at him and her heart beat faster.  She was a Junsu bias, so of course she had been attracted to him before, but this was something new.  Stupid kiss.  Stupid Junsu.  Jerk, stealing her first kiss.  She was angry, but she was also kind of giddy.  She felt her face flushing again and fought to keep her mind on something else.  Anything else.

“So, how long do you think we’ll be stuck here?”  Junsu looked away from her, embarrassed.  Maybe that question was too close to other topics to be safe.

“I don’t know.  A few more hours, maybe.  Hopefully, this won’t be one of those blizzards that last for days.”

If she hadn’t been blushing her face would have been very cold.  The fireplace was small and didn’t allow for a big fire.  Plus, there were gaps between the logs that made up the walls of the cabin that the wind found its way through.  Robyn was warm in her blanket, but Junsu had to be cold.  He couldn’t spend the next few hours like that.  She sighed.

            “Junsu?”

He looked over at her, puzzled by her tone.

“Do you…do you want to share the blanket with me?  I don’t want you to freeze to death after you saved me from that fate.”  She blushed again.  Curse her pale skin that showed her blushes far too easily!

“Are you sure you’re okay with that?”

“As long as you’re on your best behavior, I am.”  He nodded.

“I promise.  Nothing will happen.”  She held open part of the blanket to him, making sure to keep all of herself covered until he covered himself with the blanket.  It wasn’t a huge blanket, so in order to cover both of them; they had to sit with their arms, legs, and hips touching.  Awkward silence fell between them.  Robyn really hoped the blizzard would be done soon.
