“He’s stable for now, but as i already told you, the percentage for him to go through the next surgery is still low.”

Si Jin nodded when he heard the doctor’s explanation about his father, Yoo Young Geun who’s just gone through a heart surgery.

“Can i go inside?”

“Yes you can, he’s already awake, i’ll leave you with him.”

“Thank you doctor Jang.”

He opened the door and once he saw his father, his heart squeezed uncomfortably seeing his father like this never came to his mind.

“Aboji..”

Si Jin sat down on the seat beside his father’s bed, the old man looked so pale and weak. It’s the first time they met after six months since Si Jin’s father lived in Boston while Si Jin was in Seoul for his study. Even if his father was in Seoul, they barely met.

Two days ago Si Jin received a phone call from Doctor Jang, a cardiologist who’s also his father’s colleague.

Doctor Jang told him that Yoo Young Geun had a heart attack when he just arrived in Seoul and he’s rushed to the hospital for a surgery.

“Son.”

“How are you feeling Aboji?”

“A bit dizzy, but i’m fine.”

Si Jin and Young Geun never had a further conversation besides “hi”, “how are you”, “how’s your day”, or something really superficial. The two of them were not experts in making good and deep conversation like father and son, especially after Young Geun’s divorced with Si Jin’s mother.

The old man looked at his son and tried to adjust his position, Si Jin immediately helped him since he’s afraid that his father might be hurt from the needles attached to his body.

“I’m alright..i’m alright.” Young Geun pushed him gently since he could sense his son’s worry.

He’s gazing at Si Jin then he smiled, it was the first smile that Si Jin saw from his father since usually Young Geun was a very stoic person.

“I saw you with a very beautiful girl.” 

Si Jin frowned his eyes, looking confused at his father’s sudden change of topic.

“When?”

“Some months ago, i was near your office to attend some meetings.”

“Aaa..”

Si Jin was sure, the girl who his father talking about was Mo Yeon, but he felt weird since they never talked like this.

“Is she your girlfriend?”

Si Jin’e ears turned red and his father could notice his son’s change of expression then he smiled.

“So she is indeed your girlfriend. I see.”

“We..we are not i mean..maybe but i’m not sure if she..if..if we” 

Si Jin was flustered and he’s finding a way to explain to his father. For normal people, it would be really easy to just admit it but Si Jin and his father were not like the others who could really open about everything.

“What’s her name?”

Young Geun cut Si Jin’s panic blabber.

“Kang Mo Yeon.”

“I can see you like her.”

Si Jin scratched his head while looking down and nodded, his ears were still as red as a tomato.

“I can bring her here if you want to meet her.”

Young Geun smiled timidly and shook his head, refusing his son’s offer.

“Sooner or later she will meet me, but not now, not in this condition, son.”

“So do you want to meet her once you get a discharge from hospital?”

“You are a brilliant young man, but i know you’re bad at lying.”

“What do you mean aboji?”

“You know that it’ll be impossible for me to meet your girl when i’m alive right? What i mean is, you can bring her to my funeral.”

“ABOJI..”

Si Jin’s eyes widen, he’s shocked at his father’s answer.

“I know my time is coming, son, no need to lie and assuring me of something that won’t be happening.”

“I’m sorry aboji..i…”

Yoo Young Geun grabs his son’s hand and squeezed them gently, for Si Jin this was also the first time his father showed him this kind of affection, he could feel his father’s warm hands and it somehow made him happy.

“For all these years you’ve grown to be a very strong and brilliant young man. I’m sorry to give you such a pitiful childhood..”

Si Jin shook his head upon hearing his father, but Young Geun kept talking since he knew this would be the last time he had a chance talking like this to his son.

“You never received the love you deserved from me and your mom, mostly it’s my fault since I’m like this, a cold-hearted person, i’m sorry Si Jin-ah, i’m sorry you have me as your father.”

“No aboji, no..”

“I know that sorry is not enough but i don’t know what to say since i’m not good with words..” Young Geun slightly smiled.

“But i just want you to know that i’m really proud of you.”

“Aboji..”

Si Jin felt tears forming on the corner of his eyes.

“I hope someday you will get the love that you deserve, the love that I as your father couldn’t give you.”

“Please aboji, don’t say like that, you..you already are a great father.”

“Don’t lie to me silly, i know i am not, you were raised by a bunch of babysitters, i never attended parent’s gathering at your school, i never asked how’s your doing with your study, i..”

“But you never leave me..like eomma did.”

Si Jin told the truth, even though his father was one of the coldest person out there, but he didn’t leave him like his mother, and for that Si Jin would always be grateful for his father.

Sensing his son’s anger whenever they mentioned about his ex-wife, Young Geun’s eyes soften.

“Your mother has made a great mistake by leaving you, but i hope someday you could forgive her.”

“How come i can forgive her aboji, she was using you, then she left us.”

“Someday son, not today, someday you will have a better understanding and a greater heart to accept her, and i hope when that day comes you already have a family of your own.”

“ Someday?”

“Yes, someday, so, can you promise me that?”

Si Jin looked hesitant at first then he slightly nodded.

“Yes aboji, i promise.”

“That’s my soon, now, let this old man rest for a moment, this too much talking makes me tired.”

“Let me help you with your blanket aboji.”

“Thank you son, good night.”

“Good night.”
