Chapter 48 - Finale

“Remind me again why this is a good idea.” Kai throws Ara a cocky smirk, earning a smack on the head in return. “Listen to me boy, and you listen well; one day that stupid smirk of yours is gonna have you killed.”   “It’s either that or your painfully violent smacks,” Kai mutters, and Ara aims for his head again but Kai grabs her hand and pulls her close. “Do you hear that?” Ara frowns and strains her head, trying to catch any sounds coming from behind the building.   “I don’t hear , Ka-“   “Shush!” Kai silences her again, and Ara is on the verge of sending a not so playful punch to his jaw, but then she hears it. The sound of something inhuman growling and most likely ripping flesh apart.   Ara feels goose bumps rise across her skin, and she looks up at Kai with horror written on her face. Kai, that psychopath, on the other hand, is sporting a wicked grin, and he pushes away from the brick wall and nods in the direction of the loud munching.   “There’s no way in hell I’m facing that thing,” Ara says, eyes wide, and Kai rolls his eyes and grabs her hand.   “My plan worked, I lured the stupid wendigo out and now we have to kill it before it kills something bigger than the deer it’s currently feasting on.” Kai leaves no room for arguing and before she knows it, Ara is standing five feet behind it. She calls it an “it” because it doesn’t exactly look human.   “Holy ,” Kai whispers, and Ara feels her blood run cold when the creature snaps its head in their direction, blood dripping down its pale jaw. The loud snarl that leaves its mouth has Ara stumbling backwards, and Kai sighs and jumps in front of her just in time for the creature to attack.   They had felt something cross the border last week, when Ara had returned to the pack house after school. The joy and celebration of having her back was cut short when Kai had ordered the boys to take laps around the border in search for the creature.
