Back when I was 14, I was a nobody in my school. An introvert, in fact. I never hang out with anyone except my own clique from my own class. Although I was in the band, I was never the outstanding one, preferring to play my instrument silently in the background. I prefer blending in with my friends rather than stand out. I never felt like I had the ability to lead and it was out of my comfort range.

And in the high school that I went to, there was someone named Lee Hyukjae. He was the most popular senior in my school. When I first stepped in, everybody in my year began talking about him. It was not difficult to guess why he was popular. This guy was practically glowing with every step he took. Lee Hyukjae was the most charming boy on campus. He was also the President of the dance club and sociable as well.

Once in awhile whenever I’m sitting under the big old oak tree, reading my book after school, I would see him and his dancer friends pass by, laughing and showing off their dance moves. Every single week without fail, I would see him do a different move. Handstands, moonwalk…anything. You name it and Lee Hyukjae could do it. He was just like a dancing machine. And every girl in my school adored him for being so perfect. That includes me. I may be an introvert but that doesn’t mean I had no feelings. I’m only human and how could my heart not be moved by such an incredible creature?

Although I had feelings for him, I kept it a secret from all my friends. I felt like I shouldn’t be having these feelings. Moreover, there was no point in telling them about it. Lee Hyukjae would never ever like me. He doesn’t even know of my existence. I was just part of the student body that showed up during his dance competitions to watch him. So every day, I had this feeling kept hidden and just watched him from afar. I felt contented knowing that I could do that and a little sad that I wouldn’t be able to at least be friends with him before he graduated.  But I know that Lee Hyukjae and I were worlds apart and were never meant to be.

So, it came as a shock to me when I came into school to find him waiting outside my classroom one day in September. He has never ever set foot in the junior’s block before and it made me wonder what he was doing there. As I was walking nearer to my classroom, my heart started beating faster out of its own accord. Lee Hyukjae in all his glory was leaning on the wall, with his bag on the floor. His uniform neatly pressed and hair carefully styled.  He probably was just bored or waiting for someone in my class who’s in the dance club but knowing that I had to walk past him to get into my classroom made me anxious. Hard as it was, I dragged my feet towards my classroom.

By the time, I was nearing the classroom, my heart felt as if it was about to burst out of the ribcage. There was no one around, only him standing there. I managed to survive and glanced a little at him when I walked past. At that moment, from the corner of his eyes, he saw a movement and he looked up and locked eyes with me.

“Kim Haemin sshi,”he called out.

I stopped. He just called my name. I couldn’t move since I was in too much of a shock. But he came over and stood right in front of me.

“Kim Haemin sshi,”he called out again.

Slowly, I lifted up my head to look at him. His brown eyes were piercing through mine and he was looking at me in quite a weird way. His eyes were all soft and even loving.

“I am Lee Hyukjae…a senior,”he stuttered.

I wasn’t able to speak and just stared, wondering why the almighty Lee Hyukjae would even think of introducing himself to me? Everybody knows his name.

“Well, er…I asked your classmate who’s in the dance club…for your name…,”he shifted his gaze and was scratching the back of his head with his hand, clearly embarrassed.

And since no other guy had ever took the initiative to talk to me, I didn’t know how else to respond to that. I was practically basking in happiness. Lee Hyukjae had actually asked around for my name! But if I were to speak, I was sure that I would be tongue-tied. Seeing that I was lacking in response, he got a little frustrated and cleared his throat. He refocused his energy and was looking at me just like how he looked on the dance floor.

“Actually, I’m…here to ask you out,”

“What?”

That was what escaped from my mouth. My head started spinning, not knowing if it was a dream. I nursed a crush on him for so long and here he was standing in front of me, actually knowing my name and asking me out. I thought I was just like air to him: invisible.

“I’m here to ask you out,”he repeated himself.

“Is this a prank?”I asked since I was being skeptical.

Boys were fond of daring each other into doing things, right? After hearing my response, he raised his eyebrow and chuckled.

“Haemin sshi, its September now and I can’t be playing an April’s fool prank on you five months later, right?”he grinned, showing off his gums.

I thought about it, still deciding whether to believe what he said.

“I really, sincerely, earnestly want to ask you out. If you reject me today, I’m going to wait every single morning for you right there,”he pointed to the same spot that he was at earlier on.

After turning back to look at where his bag was, I returned my focus on him. He had stopped smiling and his eyes were shining so brightly. Up close, he was even more handsome than I remembered.

“So, Kim Haemin sshi, are you willing to go out with me?”he asked.

 “Go out with you, in what context?”I asked to confirm.

“Well, I was thinking of you being my girlfriend,”he answered.

“But you don’t even know me,”I quickly responded.

“Tell you what, wait for me after your class and let’s go on a friendly date. After the date, you can give me your answer. But remember, if you reject me after the date, I’ll be there at the same spot every single morning, waiting for you to say yes. Have a good day, Haemin sshi and I’ll see you later,”he smiled and bowed before walking.

And that was how I got to have my first conversation with Lee Hyukjae.
