Of Barks and Sneezes
Our House [One-Shot/Drabble Collection]“You’re so ing annoying, Junghae. Do you ever shut the up?” Chanyoung hears Luhan comment in aggravation followed by two pairs of heavy footsteps hammering down the stairs.
“I am so not annoying. Like wow, o-m-g.” Junghae sasses after a loud thud.
Chanyoung sets her work sheets down on the paper and book covered coffee table, along with her chewed up pencil that was placed at her ear now resting at the crack of one of her opened books. She ponders about getting up from the floor and is half standing half sitting when Luhan speaks again, but closer.
“My you’re not! You’re literally the definition of it. No wonder you’re here.” The two come into view for Chanyoung; all dressed casually and crowding around the shoe closet. They don’t seem to notice Chanyoung and for a brief moment she thinks about sitting back down but curiosity gets the better of her because ever since moving into the share-house, Luhan and Junghae going out is something that everyone always avoided unless everyone else went.
Chanyoung creeps over to the two in only four large steps just as Jungdae replies, “Wow! How rich coming from the likes of you, yeah?”
“Where are you guys going?” Chanyoung’s voice booms like thunder and actually makes Luhan jump.
“We’re going around the corner to some ,” comes Junghae’s quick response (and gesture) and sometimes Chanyoung wonders just how quick is Jungdae’s wit and if she has comebacks ready for everything. Maybe she has a notebook full of them and recites them every morning.
Luhan makes a face of disgust towards Junghae who mirrors the expression in mockery before facing Chanyoung with a straight face and says, “To hell.”
Chanyoung tilts her head, furrows her brows and makes a frown in confusion because she’s pretty sure that’s not it but since getting to know them for two weeks she knows that’s the only answer she’s going to get.
“That’s where you’ll be for eternally, Lu.” Junghae sings Luhan’s last name with a cheeky smile.
Luhan rounds about to face Junghae head on, the tips of her hair grazing Chanyoung’s chest who steps away from the growing fight, “You know where you’ll be , Junghae? In—”
“Alright, you two, cut it out!” The order is commanded and a solid clap is followed. Like trained puppies—or kids—Luhan and Junghae shut up and face the person in authority—Kim Misook. “I don’t want hear y'all nag about this on our way to the store, capisce?” The two salute her like soldiers and when Misook sighs and pushes pass them to put her shoes on, the two share a burning glare at each other.
“Chanyoung,” Misook begins from the floor as she ties her shoes, “We’re going to restock the fridge for this week and normally I’d ask you to tag along but everyone is out and we need someone home when Jungin arrives. She gets worried when she’s alone. It’s not too much to ask for you to stay, right?” Misook looks up and the two make eye contact.
“Oh,” no is what Chanyoung actually wants to say because she’s still in the awkward stage with the youngest of the household but there’s nothing she can do. Maybe this is her chance to get Jungin warming up to her. “Nah, that’s fine!” she ends with a wide smile.
“Great, awesome!” Misook smiles back and stands up and starts to order the two as she heads out, “Get the keys Junghae and Luhan you have the bags, right?” the two choruses a loud and needy “yes!” and out the door they go with Chanyoung waving bye.
The brunette her teeth to make a sound in the now quiet house before shrugging and walking back to the living room, forgetting to lock the door.
An hour and a half passes and the front door creaks open like a haunted house and jolts Chanyoung to reality.
“Hello?” It’s Jungin.
Chanyoung, by pure instincts, holds her breath.
“Hello?” Jungin’s voice gets louder and shakes just a bit at the end.
Chanyoung shifts her eyes around the living room whilst slowly exhaling. She counts to ten and gets up as quietly as possible and makes her way to the open corridor.
“Hel—!”
“Hey.” Chanyoung pops out scaring Jungin witless. The younger actually has tears in her eyes that Chanyoung panics at. “Oh! Oh! I’m so sorry I didn’t mean to—I just—I’m loud, I’m so sorry Jungin I didn’t—”
Jungin shakes her head but says nothing.
The two stand awkwardly at the front door.
“Is… Junhee home?” Jungin asks timidly, her eyes casted down at her hands that hold a black duffle bag delicately.
Chanyoung swears on her life that something moved inside but she doesn’t comment and instead answers, “Everyone’s out.”
“Oh.” She looks down at the bag then back up to Chanyoung, opens but a little bark is all that sounds.
Did she just bark at me?
Clumsily but gently, Jungin lies the bag on the floor and s it to reveal a puppy with its tongue out and tail wagging. She looks up and Chanyoung feels her chest tighten because the younger woman looks exactly like the puppy that has climbed onto her lap.
“Please, please don’t tell Junhee!” Jungin begs, cuddling the puppy close to her who at her chin, “I know pets aren’t allowed but she was following since I got off the bus and she wouldn’t leave even when I shooed her away so I picked her up half way and put her in the bag because I didn’t know if anyone was home so I was thinking of sneaking her in for a bit because she’s just a puppy that—”
“Room.”
“What?” Jungin blinks, sniffling; the puppy barks.
Chanyoung absentmindedly plays with the puppy’s floppy ears that leans back against Jungin’s chest and wiggles in delight. “My room. We can hide her in my room; no one ever goes in.”
“But it’s—”
“Junhee’s not home, yeah? It’s the perfect crime!” Chanyoung shouts to a stand, fist in the air, making Jungin flinch.
The puppy wiggles out of Jungin’s hands and stands to claw up at Chanyoung’s bare legs in endless joy, loud tiny barks filling up the silence.
Three car doors slam and the celebration is cut short.
“Quick, Nini! To the room!” Chanyoung orders with a gleeful smile, not noticing that she pulled a nickname out of nowhere, but Jungin doesn't object because she’s smiling and feeling a rush of excitement as she rushes up the stairs into Chanyoung room with the hyper puppy in her arms.
(Unfortunately, not even three days later, Junhee finds the puppy running amok; barking, chewing, hiding clothes and marking his territory. And although everyone was up for keeping the puppy (and getting him neutered), they find out that the two that snuck the animal in where, in fact, allergic to pets.
So the puppy had to go.
Chanyoung and Jungin cried so much that day.)
