Thumps in the Night
Our House [One-Shot/Drabble Collection]Baekhee scouts the dark hallway for any intruders before dipping back into the kitchen and making her way over to the dining section. She stands at the head of the table, hands properly placed to balance her weight, and speaks with a dramatic deep voice, “I gather you all here tonight—”
“Baekhee,” Junghae cuts with a loud yawn, “it’s three in the morning—”
Seyun slams her hands onto the table, startling the bunch. “Witch hour!”
Jungin squeaks in fright, “Don’t say that!”
“Ey, she’s just pulling your leg, Jungin.” Chanyoung cackles and pats Jungin’s shoulder.
“What?” Seyun looks at Chanyoung as if she told her she is a man. “No I’m not. in’ Yi—”
“Invalid. Legs.” Chanyoung snaps with a sharp look directed to silence Seyun. She will not have Jungin up late tonight because of the reckless, spooky things Seyun always tells her.
“Listen! To! Me!” Baekhee slaps the table for attention. “Y'all need to untwist your with each other later because this is more important than Jungin’s fear.” Baekhee tosses a quick apologetic look Jungin’s way who only sighs.
“Offended, even if it’s not targeted at me.” Chanyoung chimes in.
“When are you not offended?” Seyun tries to rally up Chanyoung again but fails when Junghae groans loudly.
“Shut up. Let Baekhee talk her so that we can all go to sleep.”
Baekhee gives Junghae a questionable look because does she thank her or feel offended? She shrugs as an afterthought. “Anyways, I’ve called you all here tonight since we've missed the last three meetings because of classes and work—”
“Are you still on about this?” Junghae is in disbelief. She thought the reason that Baekhee hasn’t called for these meetings were because she no longer believed in them. “Baek, listen, you’re a smart girl, really. But they’re not al—”
“But how do you know?” Baekhee counters with her fist thumping the table to make her voice vibrate.
Junghae blinks. Are they about to have an argument about whether or not Kim Misook and Do Kyungri are aliens with Baekhee and company? Yes, yes they are. “Because aliens don’t—”
“Non-believer be silent!” Baekhee shouts in a whisper, a finger pointed to the ceiling.
Junghae’s jaw slacks to a point that it does just fall agape. She looks stupid but honestly feels more stupid for even climbing out of bed for this.
Jungin and Chanyoung, on the other hand, have long forgotten the witch hour and are intrigued by where Baekhee is going with this. Do they also agree with the two woman in question being aliens? No, of course not. The only thing they really agree on with Seyun and Baekhee is that the two are very strange when left alone. Being here for the alien talk, though, is fun to them and why they never miss them.
Seyun slaps her knee. “I’ve came across info today.”
“Yes! Speak young one!” Baekhee takes a seat next to Junghae (but makes sure to give her a look).
“Okay, so S and G—”
“These codenames are so stupid…” Junghae says loud enough for everyone to hear but quiet enough for Seyun to talk over.
“—were in charge of dinner tonight, right? So I thought—thinking of when the next meeting is—that I should observe them to see if anything different comes up. Nothing does, though, until I realize something… weird.” Seyun pauses for someone to speak.
“Like normal weird, or weird weird?” Chanyoung bits the bait.
“Weird weird.” Seyun’s eyes grow with the pronunciations of the word. “We all know they don’t, like, talk when it’s just the two of them, but I’ve never noticed, like, how they do communicate. It’s so different and it’s with the feature they both share.”
“Round eyes?” Jungin questions.
“Height?” Chanyoung adds.
“Large !” Baekhee claps as if she found the answer.
“You would notice their s, wouldn’t you?”Junghae sighs, rubbing the sleep away from her face.
Baekhee leans back and holds a very sassy finger towards Junghae. “Seems like a question targeted at Lu.” The whole table laughs at that, including Junghae who lets out a small chuckle.
Seyun sits up straight from laughing. She clears , “Okay, they’re all true but not what I was getting at.”
“Then stop pausing and just tell us.” Junghae complains.
Seyun frowns at her and glares. “Eyebrows.” Seyun looks away from Junghae and glances to everyone present in the room. “They hold conversations with their God forbidden bushy eyebrows.”
Everyone goes silent as they picture the two in question. In unison, they gasp.
“Dude! You’re right! They have super thick eyebrows.” Chanyoung slams her fist against her eyebrows.
“They’re like cute, hairy caterpillars.” Jungin adds with a smile. Seyun side-eyes her but doesn’t comment. She’ll let it slide since she can only assume Jungin said that because she’s sleep deprived.
“Oh! Oh!” Baekhee’s sounds are too her Jungin’s pure ears. “They always raise their eyebrows oh, my God, why haven’t I noticed this before?” She rises up and holds her hand out for Seyun to take. Seyun does. “Good find, Seyun.” They shake.
“Wait though, Misook and Kyungri aren’t the only ones with bushy eyebrows.” Junghae says with a strain voice as she stretches. She moves away from her chair, pushes it in but stays at the table.
“Uh, yeah they are.” Chanyoung leans back in her chair, face scrunched up.
“Uh, no they aren’t. Are we forgetting about Junhee?” Junghae shakes her head a bit for effect.
The table goes quiet.
“Oh...” Seyun whispers, afraid of the information Junghae has just given them. “Junhee also talks with her brows. To Kris who understands.”
Baekhee shivers with her arms hugging her. “I’m getting goosebumps we have aliens.”
