Manipulation

The Target

It wasn’t all that hard to book an appointment with the well-known financial advisor, Jung Ho Seok. His name was no longer foreign since he had a remarkable reputation in upholding large companies and prevented many businesses from bankruptcy. When they claimed they were related to the recently deceased Choi Min Ho, Ho Seok immediately cleared up some space in his hectic schedule.   To go against someone who was good with his strategic skills, they decided to have both Ki Bum and Maerin enter the field, simply because Hyun Mi was still recovering from the gunshot and it would be a nice experience for Maerin to have.   “Good day, Mr. Jung. Lovely office you have,” Ki Bum gave a firm handshake to the guy in front. This Ho Seok person was rather eccentric and had a goofy smile plastered on his face that in no way defined his prestigious reputation.   “Thank you. Please take a seat.” Ho Seok guided them to the chair in front of his wooden desk and sat behind it.   Maerin did her best to absorb as much information as she could from the interior alone. This was her first time out on the mission field outside the headquarters, so she was a little bit nervous. His office gave off the homey vibe which made Ho Seok seem approachable. There were multiple picture frames containing photos of an elderly woman along with a small young boy. The corner of the photos was slightly ripped, and one could tell this wasn’t the entirety of the family picture.   It matched the prior research they had done on him. Ho Seok came from a broken and abusive family whereby his father had killed his mother and abandoned him as a young child. He grew up well and tried his best to prevent others from making the same mistakes his father did.   “Over the phone, you told me you needed to see me regarding Choi Min Ho?” Ho Seok asked cautiously, lowering his voice at the name. “My condolences to the man who passed away tragically.”   News apparently travelled fast. Tae Min had worked his magic to make it seem as if Choi Min Ho’s case was a suicide instead of him being killed. This way they could report it to the police without arising too much suspicions to the politician's case.   “Yes, I am the notary hired by Mr. Choi. He had been depressed for a while now and looked me up to start preparing his final will. I was confused why a perfectly healthy man would do that, but I’m just doing my job. I couldn’t believe he was preparing to end his life so soon,” Ki Bum spoke so earnestly it was hard not to believe him. Ho Seok was nodding along in understanding.   “Since he had a lot of funds to distribute among the many start ups, he wanted me to make sure every company gets the exact amount as he persisted,” Ki Bum continued his lying game. He retrieved a formal document from his briefcase and laid it down in front of the advisor. “The problem is that he never actually got to list down the name of the companies he wanted it to be transferred to. I have the amount, but can’t match it to his desired start ups. All he said was to question his loyal man, Jung Ho Seok.”   Ho Seok raised an eyebrow at the detail contained in the document. He wouldn’t believe it until he read it with his own eyes, so he scanned the formal document letter by letter. It was signed using Choi Min Ho’s signature and written in his handwriting. This was all very easy to recreate considering Dong Woo managed to hack into previous documents signed by Choi Min Ho and simply copied it unto their forged document.   “I am afraid I don’t have answers for you either,” Ho Seok said after he laid the paper down.   Ki Bum wasn’t buying it and decided to play his guilt tripping game. “Mr. Choi’s last wish was specifically for me to contact you. You can’t possibly show reluctance to help out, can you?”   Ho Seok pressed his lips together, having an internal dilemma whether he would start talking or not. “All I did was advise him how to wisely allocate his budget and funds to several companies. But you must know how stubborn he can be.”   “Yes, he always believes his ways are right and likes to force his opinions on us,” Ki Bum played along, though he had never even spoken to the dead guy. But based on Ho Seok’s words, Ki Bum was simply guessing this was Min Ho’s characterization. They had to seem close.   “Exactly. So I don’t know how precisely he followed my advices,” Ho Seok spoke, and instead of showing sympathy or remorse, there was slight anger now. An emotion which Ki Bum honestly found very interesting.   “Are there any other sources we could use to find out the companies he usually funded?” Maerin asked curiously, but was soon met with Ki Bum’s condemning eyes. He had asked her to stay quiet as he did all the talking, but she couldn’t help herself.   “Sadly, no,” Ho Seok said with a long sigh and his eyes fell towards the desk.   Maerin turned to Ki Bum who kept staring at the guy, not believing what they had just been told. He was probably thinking of some way to get him to talk.   “What a shame,” Ki Bum unfolded his arms, and Maerin could sense a slight falter in his perfect act. “Choi Min Ho always wanted to make his mother happy.”   At the word ‘mother,’ Ho Seok’s eyes jolted open with interest. Maerin immediately understood they were trying to gain his sympathy now.   “He wanted to invest the funds into the right company so he’d be able to get a higher capital return from his investments, and thereby make his mother happy.”   “Yes! He really wanted to buy her a farm at the countryside because she loved farming potatoes!” Maerin added, and once again received a subtle glare from Ki Bum. It scared her a little.   “Mr. Choi did always talk about owning a ranch for his mother,” Ho Seok said, suddenly his tone was soft and melancholic.   Maerin beamed proudly at the guy beside her who now stared at her in amazement. She wasn’t just saying random things, she was a data analyst and had done an intensive background check on Choi Min Ho’s entire family. The information deemed useful now.   “I suppose there is one person you could try talking to. If someone has access to Mr. Choi’s actual transaction accounts, it would be him. He is the bank director of the large Bank of Korea.”   The name of the bank was more than familiar since only the upper people with the most luxurious wealth could afford it. It came with the best defense system no one could get through externally or internally, which explained Dong Woo’s inability to hack through the systems.   “I thought Mr. Choi uses multiple banks to invest his money in,” Maerin remembered what Dong Woo had told them prior to this plan.   “I advised him to create fake accounts under his name at other banks, but to only make small investments to get a return on interest. All his main savings should be at Bank of Korea. You should try to look this guy up.”   Ho Seok scribbled down a name on a piece of paper and shifted it to the two in front.   “His name is Kim Sung Gyu.”     “Yes! We’re actually a step closer now!” Maerin cheered when they were back in the car. “This is actually super nerve wracking. Is this what you and Hyun Mi usually do?”   “Yes, we get people to talk without using physical force,” Ki Bum said as he started the engines and drove away. He could sense Maerin’s fascination.   “But is it me or did I sense you hesitating a little when you suddenly talked about Choi Min Ho’s mother?” She asked curiously.   Ki Bum looked at her, completely impressed. She wasn’t the greatest data analyst for nothing; Maerin truly caught on to the smallest detail an ordinary person would normally miss.   “I usually point out their faults, play with their fears, or condemn them for their actions. Their guilt is what eventually gets them talking.”   “I can see that happening,” Maerin nodded.   “Whereas Hyun Mi is the one who garners people’s sympathy and have the people confess their crimes because she promises there is hope and second chances. Let’s just say she is good at manipulating people’s emotion to react the way she wants them to.”   “You seem to do well at drawing his sympathies just now though.”   “I observed Hyun Mi a lot,” he said, ignoring the obnoxious way the girl started to smile.   “That is why you guys are the perfect team!” Maerin commented rather dreamily. She didn’t even try to hide her wide grin. “Why don’t you guys date already?”   Ki Bum flashed her a look of utter disgust. “If you don’t want me to go off telling bad things about you to Tae Min, you better not speak of that ever again,” he threatened.   Maerin gasped for several reasons. One, her crush towards Tae Min was apparently that noticeable. Two, she was actually being threatened by the one who noticed it. Three, Tae Min would probably become a victim to Ki Bum’s manipulative schemes and could end up hating her altogether.   “Fine, I won’t ask,” the girl pouted in defeat. Another thought soon popped in her head. “Did you notice Ho Seok sounded angry when he talked about Choi Min Ho not following his advices?”   “You noticed?” Ki Bum was once again surprised. He knew she was good at her job, but he didn’t know she excelled this much at reading people.   “There was an abrupt change in his emotion. Almost like

Chapter 24: I finally finished this today.
I should have seen it coming with Ki Bum since I do watch a couple of spy movies/dramas.
I think my favorite part is seeing Hyun Mi threaten Mr. Lee and then her conflicting view on their mission in the plane.

Chapter 21: I love how there's another reference to HIPS with Hee Jin mentioning she nearly killed someone with a curling iron. It makes me wonder if that's where she got the idea to use it as a weapon.

Chapter 19: I love how Hyun Mi and Woo Hyun are closer which makes it sadder with what happens to him in HIPS.

Chapter 17: I like how this is kind of like a foreshadowing of HIPS and love the cameo of Hee Jin and Min Seok.

Chapter 14: I don't think Woo Hyun is lying to Hyun Mi.
I like how Hyun Mi and those close to her want to change what their company does. I couldn't help but think maybe one of the higher-ups in their company or maybe Ki Bum is using them for their own goals.

Chapter 14: Wait whatt that was unexpected... I've been feeling that Ki Bum and Mr. Lee were slightly off though, so I think they're both probably lying. There's no way Woohyun would actually deserve to be killed...

But on a happier note, yay Taemin and Maerin! The hand holding part was really cute XD

Chapter 12: Love the appearances of the other characters from HIPS, Seollin and Taehyung introducing themselves made me laugh.
I think my favorite part is when Taemin touched the check because one thing I learn from a game called "Women's Murder Club: Death in Scarlet" is that people tend to press a bit hard when writing. So whatever they wrote might be indented into the next sheet of paper.

Chapter 11: The part where they nearly got caught is so intense. It reminded me of a level I played in "Hitman 2", where Agent 47 has about at least 3 to 5 minutes to kill his target before his identity gets discovered.
Also, the two finally kissed! I laughed at the part where Hyun Mi realized the others might have seen it from the CCTV.

Chapter 10: Woo Hyun to the rescue! I find it sweet he's there to save Hyun Mi from Sang Gyu since she and the others were stuck on what to do.
