Grand Gala

The Target

The gala was a prestigious party that invited the top people of each industry. The event was held at a huge mansion located on the outskirts of the city on top of a cliff. The ocean waves underneath casted small ripples of splashes against the side of the rocky cliff. But the atmosphere inside the mansion was far from calm.   Numerous limousines entered the premise, dropping off the VIP guest inside the luxurious vehicle, before driving away again. The action got repeated like a loop. Every time someone got off, the reporters were ready to take photos like the guests were walking through the red carpet.   Hyun Mi did not expect the gala to be this grand. She was used to the media’s attention, and having the cameras on her was like breathing oxygen. But seeing those flashes going off against the starless night was uncomfortably blinding.   But being a quite known figure herself, she had to keep smiling in front of the camera, appearing as if nothing was wrong. So she faced these strangers to show off her flowing a-line dress which nearly extended to the floor. The dark red wine color gave off a sophisticated yet alluring look and matched perfectly to the shade of her lipstick. The silky cloth extended upwards to form a divider at the bust, elegantly covering her front and wrapping the ends of the cloth behind her neck. There was a long cut at the side of the skirt to allow better flexibility when walking. It barely hid the tall glossy maroon stilettos she wore underneath.   As soon as she entered the building, she barely had any time to marvel in its expansive beauty. The walls were clean white in color, but decorated in handcrafted patterns under a vintage influence. The crystal chandelier that hung from the ceiling was dangling to perfectly illuminate the grand hall and highlight the slightest detail on people’s outfit. Her eyes swiftly dashed to the white marbled ceramic tiles beneath her heels.   But there was no time to absorb all of that in, because Ki Bum had nonchalantly appeared from the side of the entrance, causally linking his arms with hers as he guided her to descend the stairs.   “You’re late,” Ki Bum whispered without looking at her eyes. He dusted his sleek outfit, deliberately not personalized to lay low from the attention.   “I had troubles wearing this outfit you chose for me.” Hyun Mi lightly jerked his ribcage while maintaining the smile on her face.   “With a fashion sense like yours, there is no way the politician would ever look your way. You should thank me,” Ki Bum said and still had that calm look when they reached the ground floor. It was filled with numerous infamous guests they were mainly able to recognize.   “It’s cold,” she whined to him, feeling so unsatisfied with her showing. This was perhaps the first time she wore such a bold dress, and the room was conveniently freezing.   The two of them momentarily stood at the end of the stairs with eyes quickly scanning the entire room for the target in no less than five seconds. It wasn’t that hard to spot the one guy surrounded by a bunch of bodybuilding looking men and some group of girls swooning around.   “Well, if he were a gentleman, he’d take care of that for you.” Ki Bum elegantly picked up a glass of red wine from the tray a waiter was holding and gently handed it over to her.   Hyun Mi’s eyes were still on the politician whom she had limited vision to. His face was blocked by the bodyguards from where she was standing, but she noted he was talking to someone; a reporter, she realized. The voice was immediately recognized as Hwang Yerin, one of the journalists notorious for taking in bribery to falsify the published news. The organization was still gathering proof for her crimes and would deal with her later.   “How many people have you helped through your active campaign rallies?” Yerin asked. She was dressed in a black cocktail dress but resumed her job by interviewing the politician.   “A lot of them.”   That was the first time she heard Nam Woo Hyun’s voice in person, and there was a gentle warmth through it like the blanketing heat during a cold winter’s night. It had that soothing lullaby quality that could draw a person in audibly.   Yerin did not look pleased and decided not to jot down his answer. She proved how qualified she was for her job when she didn’t seek for emotionally evoking answers, but for an actual number. “How much is a lot?” She insisted.   “Would the number justify my actions of good deed? I’m afraid the number will exceed any of your or the reader’s expectation, which will put me in a difficult place to remain humble,” he replied, skillfully evading the question with either the truth or a sense of humor. Either way, it got him away from Yerin who jotted his answers down reluctantly.   Seeing him walk was a cue for the two agents to act fast as they both followed his pace from the opposite direction.   “I forgot everything we rehearsed,” Hyun Mi whispered quickly to her friend.   Ki Bum rolled his eyes. They had gone over the whole plan, and he thought she’d at least be able to memorize it considering she took drama classes at school. She couldn’t have chosen a more appropriate timing to have cold feet.   “Then improvise,” he whispered.   With that, he gave her a subtle push unseen by the human eye. A push strong enough to make the girl trip on her heels and perfectly land in the politician’s arms. The initial plan was for the red wine to stain his blouse, but he was surprisingly agile and avoided the messy attack just in time. She managed to hit herself in the process, but her dress was thankfully already red in color.   “Are you okay?” Woo Hyun’s voice was so gentle and laced with worries as he tightly held onto her arms. The bodyguards were about to carry her away, but he stopped them.   All Hyun Mi could think about was the failure. She bit her lips, shut her eyes for a second to gather her abilities to, as Ki Bum stated, improvise.   “I’m so sorry about that.” She quickly straightened herself up, tugging the fallen hair

Chapter 24: I finally finished this today.
I should have seen it coming with Ki Bum since I do watch a couple of spy movies/dramas.
I think my favorite part is seeing Hyun Mi threaten Mr. Lee and then her conflicting view on their mission in the plane.

Chapter 21: I love how there's another reference to HIPS with Hee Jin mentioning she nearly killed someone with a curling iron. It makes me wonder if that's where she got the idea to use it as a weapon.

Chapter 19: I love how Hyun Mi and Woo Hyun are closer which makes it sadder with what happens to him in HIPS.

Chapter 17: I like how this is kind of like a foreshadowing of HIPS and love the cameo of Hee Jin and Min Seok.

Chapter 14: I don't think Woo Hyun is lying to Hyun Mi.
I like how Hyun Mi and those close to her want to change what their company does. I couldn't help but think maybe one of the higher-ups in their company or maybe Ki Bum is using them for their own goals.

Chapter 14: Wait whatt that was unexpected... I've been feeling that Ki Bum and Mr. Lee were slightly off though, so I think they're both probably lying. There's no way Woohyun would actually deserve to be killed...

But on a happier note, yay Taemin and Maerin! The hand holding part was really cute XD

Chapter 12: Love the appearances of the other characters from HIPS, Seollin and Taehyung introducing themselves made me laugh.
I think my favorite part is when Taemin touched the check because one thing I learn from a game called "Women's Murder Club: Death in Scarlet" is that people tend to press a bit hard when writing. So whatever they wrote might be indented into the next sheet of paper.

Chapter 11: The part where they nearly got caught is so intense. It reminded me of a level I played in "Hitman 2", where Agent 47 has about at least 3 to 5 minutes to kill his target before his identity gets discovered.
Also, the two finally kissed! I laughed at the part where Hyun Mi realized the others might have seen it from the CCTV.

Chapter 10: Woo Hyun to the rescue! I find it sweet he's there to save Hyun Mi from Sang Gyu since she and the others were stuck on what to do.
