The door to the emergency room pushed open. The hospital bed rushed through along with the surgeons and the pair of friends who were all yelling inaudible words throughout their cries. Chaotic footsteps mingled along the rusty sound of small wheels driving across the laminated floors.
“You can’t come beyond this point,” one of the surgeons told them in English, halting them from proceeding. After confirming their obedience, he passed the emergency room entrance. Not long afterwards, the light above the entrance lit up to indicate a surgery taking place.
“Don’t worry,” Dong Woo whispered as he placed his arm around his sister’s shoulder, rubbing her with warming comfort, “He is going to be fine.”
Hyun Mi bit her lips together, trying her hardest not to let another hysteric cry escape . She blinked every tear away to the point her eyes were moist from collecting the unfallen tears. Her chest hurt so much it wasn’t comprehensible when put into words. If only she could’ve gotten shot in his stead.
“He won’t die that easily,” Ki Bum added, returning with his straightforward remarks when he had rejoined them. The others were as equally confused as Hee-Jin was when Ki Bum returned to the parking garage, announcing they needed to go to the hospital using the helicopter. The situation was so urgent everyone simply obeyed without putting up a protest.
“Besides, he should’ve expected this kind of danger when he decided to be with you,” the guy continued his bluntness.
Hyun Mi jolted her eyes open in realization. She was the one who put Woo Hyun’s life in danger since he was so keen on protecting her. Everyone in the waiting room knew the politician would risk his life to save her even if she forbid him to. She could've kept him locked in a room, and yet he would find ways to escape if she was in trouble.
As much as Woo Hyun would become her greatest downfall, she would become his. And it was for that reason why their relationship would be a risky one to begin with. Someone ought to get hurt through it.
“It’s not your fault,” Hee-Jin added, knowing exactly what her cousin was thinking based on the twisted frown creasing her forehead. “Don’t blame yourself for it.”
Hyun Mi was pretty much an open book for anyone to read. She couldn’t display her weakness to the younger ones. The painful thoughts were erased from her head when she turned to the couples sitting on the chairs.
“How are you feeling?” She asked them, forcing a smile on her chapped lips.
“Don’t worry about us. We’re seterong,” Maerin answered, playing on the wrong ‘strong’ to showcase how far their strength extended to.
“We’re perfectly fine,” Tae Min reassured, lacing his girlfriend’s fingers in his own, and leaning forward to plant a soft peck on the side of her temple.
Maerin blushed immediately, the red shade hot on her cheeks. They were definitely fine.
Hyun Mi smiled, knowing the two were trying to calm her down. She saw bandages all around their body to hide the scars inflicted when they heroically jumped out of the car. Maerin had a small bandage over her head whereas Tae Min had injured his knee.
“I am so thankful for this mission though,” Maerin suddenly uttered. Without it, she wouldn't discover the mutual feeling shared between her and her now boyfriend.
“Me too,” Ji Soo surprisingly voiced his opinion as well. “I am so used to working all by myself, I forgot how fun it was to work in a team.”
Hana blushed a little when the guy averted his gaze to hers, as if the words were meant for her. “Two is always better than one,” she then added shyly.
Despite the solemn situation whereby Woo Hyun’s life was at stake, the others were genuinely searching for the small little things that made this entire journey worthwhile. Their positivity were contagious and one couldn’t help but believe that everything will be fine.
Ki Bum appaeared at that time, casually lounging his arm around Hyunmi's shoulder. “Yup, we chose the right people,” he confirmed, earning a faint smile from Hyun Mi.
“Oh! Are we allowed to know the story behind Ki Bum’s double agent cover?” Hana interrupted the short silence, and the two friends agreed it was the right time to inform them of the truth now.
“I told Hyun Mi to assassinate Woo Hyun, but we both found flaws in the mission since the very first time it was handed to us. There were too many missing information without any legal backup as proof. We knew something was off,” Ki Bum began. He turned to Hyun Mi, realizing she’d rather remain silent for the time being, so he continued the tale.
“We both agreed to ask help from all of you to aid Hyun Mi in the rebellious research.” Ki Bum circled his fingers to the rest who were watching him attentively. “This way, she’d have comrades on her side while I remain close to Mr. Lee to gain his trust. My role was already determined since the beginning.”
“So when we were talking about Choi Min Ho that day, were you aware of the truth?” Tae Min remembered.
“No. I had only heard his name being mentioned by Soyou several times, but Mr. Lee didn’t trust me enough to let me in on the secret. It was after I had killed Choi Min Ho that he began to trust me. The moment I sold you out when we sneaked into his office was what prompted Mr. Lee to take me in as his right wing. He informed me of all his plan afterwards.”
“Did you know?” Hana now turned to Hyun Mi with so much curiosity and amazement.
“It was hard for me and Ki Bum to communicate since we could risk getting busted. But sometimes we’d give clues or look out for each other in our own way,” Hyun Mi said, giving her partner a meaningful smile.
“Don’t make it sound so romantic, please,” Ki Bum quickly told her in disgust and the other laughed at his revulsion.
“This is why you two would’ve been great together!” Maerin cheered, but soon earned a glare fro
