Rescue Mission

The Target

Trinkle of droplets dripped down the pipe embedding white mist from its grated holes. Hyun Mi, Dong Woo, Tae Min, and Maerin laid their backs flat against the wall behind them—they decided it was safer for Hana to stay at home under the care of Ji Soo. Using the tracker, they traced down Woo Hyun’s location to this old abandoned warehouse building that eerily enough seemed to be functioning well. It rose up to around seventeen floors tall, they roughly estimated, and noticed an absence of light from any of the windows within their vision.   “They must be in the basement,” Maerin’s voice whispered. “The moonlight’s glow does not suffice enough vision if they were to carry out the death sentence upstairs. Only a basement could provide light without being detected by intruders.”   Tae Min fawned over her, not even masking his admiration. “How do you observe such small details and gather it into big pieces of information?” He asked, his tone delirious.   “Ah, because I see that not everything deemed useless is as useless as they pertain to be,” Maerin recited an all too familiar line. Smiling along to his ever growing toothy grin, she broke the gaze and shifted to Hyun Mi instead.   “Even the lowest of things could serve the highest of purposes,” Tae Min added to the familiarity, eyes resting on the elder as well.   Hyun Mi scoffed a little, not looking at the two lovebirds. “You may flirt using lines from my motivational speech, but I would appreciate it being done in secret.”   “Right, because we do not want to follow Woo Hyun and your footsteps as the entire room watched you two practically all over each other, kissing,” Maerin said, and there was a playful mockery in her tone.   Hyun Mi jolted her head to the two, feeling heat rising in her cheek. Her heartbeat clamored loudly against her chest at the memory of his lips brushing against hers, rough but delicate. How she secretly wished to taste them once more, some day.   “Okay, the coast is clear, we should go now,” Dong Woo mouthed to them, too occupied in the mission he did not reserve any room for humor. He whipped his hand in quick circular motions, waiting for the other three to enter inside as quiet as possible. They now leaned against another pillar just meters away from the staircase leading downstairs. They were closer.   There were guards—their very own people from the organization—patrolling the floor. They were holding rifles in their arms, marching lazily back and forth. It was hard to get their estimated total.   “Watch and learn,” Dong Woo whispered. His eyes scanned the rough surface of the floor, finding a rock big enough to fit his hands. Then after calculating the timing and velocity he should throw with, he flung the rock towards the opposite direction from where they were at.   The two guards were alerted and turned around to follow the source of the noise, a very poor decision. Dong Woo pulled away from their hide out, and with amazing agility, tumbled one of the guards over from behind. He constricted the neck using his leg, forcing him to the ground. Then he spun around and, with his other leg, kicked the second guard to his chest. When both laid on the floor in no time, Dong Woo fetched a taser from behind his pocket. He tased the two unconscious men slightly that would in no way damage their lives.   He swiftly picked up the two walkie talkies held by the men and handed one to his sister. “Let’s go down,” he then said leisurely.   Hyun Mi had already seen what her brother was capable of back when he fought Woo Hyun in the hotel room. To Maerin and Tae Min, however, this was all very new. Who knew their IT genius, computer hacking, pancake burner, idiot slash genius friend possessed such amazing combat skills? They were caught in admiration, but soon snapped out of it when the Jang siblings descended down the stairs.   As soon as Dong Woo set a foot down into the light, he immediately ushered them to go back up again.   “What?” Hyun Mi whispered.   “There are too many guards and zero possible hideouts in sight. Considering you three can’t fight, I cannot single handedly hold them off,” Dong Woo explained.   Hyun Mi couldn’t help but imagine what it would’ve been like if Woo Hyun was there to fight alongside them for any future missions. She remembered he had protected her with such confidence that elevated his attractiveness and dependability in her eyes. Well, she had always found him attractive ever since their first meeting, but tried her best to deny it.   “So how do we go in?” Maerin asked curiously.   “Based on my previous findings, people are quite fond of making the air ventilation system their hideout spot,” Tae Min suggested. Dong Woo and Hyun Mi seemed less than excited, but his attention was only focused on Maerin’s utmost admiration towards him.   “That is genius!” She shout whispered, clasping her hands together and twinkling her eyes.   Hyun Mi and Dong Woo looked rather helpless at the two and decided to leave them behind in search for an entrance to the air ventilation. The lovebirds would follow once they realize the reality they were in.   Luckily, Hana had obtained a floor plan of the building beforehand and had explained them the important locations. The basement only had one floor. The entrance to the air ventilation could be reached from the back door which was left unguarded. It was easy to find but hard to reach.   “I don’t think it’s big enough to fit us all,” Maerin said, eyes scanning the size of the place.   “You girls can go. Once inside, you can create distraction of some sorts and let us in,” Dong Woo relayed an impromptu plan. Before the girls had a chance to ask what he meant with that, he already motioned the girls to the square hole located above their heads.   “Ladies first,” Dong Woo said, motioning to his sister to go first.   Though Hyun Mi may not have great strength or know how to fight, she was still one of the most agile agents at the organization. With determination, she tied her black leather jacket around her waist, clipped the walkie talkie on her pants, and entered the ventilation with Dong Woo’s aid. Then Maerin followed from behind.   “We’ll wait at our first spot. Be careful!” Tae Min’s voice echoed, and then they heard footsteps of the two guys leaving.   The ventilation was a long narrow path into the unknown darkness. Their eyes had slowly grown accustomed to the inky black surrounding, knowing how to see even in the absence of light. The space was small and cramped, but still allowed enough room to crouch around. The air was cold and chilly, just the right temperature inside the warm ventilation.   “So… Why aren’t you dating Woo Hyun?” Maerin thought of a conversation starter, and that was the first thing she thought of.   Hyun Mi felt her heart clench, glad the younger couldn’t catch her blush. “Why aren’t you dating Tae Min?” She questioned back.   “That’s not fair. I asked you first,” Maerin protested and carried on. “Is it because you don’t trust him?”   “Not at all. My faith never faltered even for a split second,” Hyun Mi declared rather proudly.   “But how? They had proof of his guilt.”   Hyun Mi kept moving, but her movements unconsciously slowed down. She pursed her lips thoughtfully. “That’s the whole point of faith, to believe in the unseen. I believe he is innocent even if the documents states otherwise.”   At this, Maerin chuckled. She recognized this; Hyun Mi was completely smitten by now. “In all honesty though, you would’ve helped him even if he was found guilty, wouldn’t you?”   Hyun Mi stayed silent for this one, sheepishly smiling a little to herself. They both knew her answer and she didn’t have to say it out loud to confirm that yes, she had chosen to stand on his side no matter what.     Woo Hyun woke up after the organization pressed a cloth over his nose, dizzying him with a substance into the unconscious. When he regained sanity, he blinked his eyes to absorb the surrounding. It was an unfamiliar setting resembling a white futuristic place. The floor consisted of tiles set up in neat rows. The wall was patented with similar whiteness, although the hue of the ceiling lamp gave everything a turquoise glow. There was a small booth resembling a cottage to one side with glass windows installed at the front. To the other side was a huge metal rolling door, which he assumed was the only way out.   His hands were tied above his head, dangling off a rope that was looped through a hook in the ceiling and connected to some machine on the side. He tried to wriggle free, but the knots were too tight.   “I see you’re finally awake,” Ki Bum’s voice greeted him.   Woo Hyun scanned around the room again. Only Ki Bum, Soyou, and several other guards were present. There was no sign of Mr. Lee.   “I see your vision has not impaired you,” Woo Hyun replied, adding a smirk to mock him.   “You are in no position to speak that way to me. You life is in my hands,” Ki Bum hissed, threatening him as Soyou quietly watched from the sidelines.   “Does speaking in a nicer gentleman-like manner increase my chances of staying alive?” Woo Hyun asked, smiling, completely unthreatened.   “No, but it shall affect how much you will suffer.”   “Ah, and here I thought Hyun Mi had requested you to elongate my pain.”   Ki Bum was about to fight back, but paused. Wasn’t Woo Hyun already carried out of the room when she had made that statement? How could the target have possibly known? He peered at Woo Hyun who kept smiling as if he was hiding something, but had nothing to hide at the same time. Woo Hyun was challenging him.   “Enough with the chit-chat, just finish him,” Soyou commanded, her voice stern and unamused by their exchange. “Mr. Lee’s plane is leaving soon and we need to catch up with him.”   “Is that so?” Ki Bum looked hesitant for a while, thinking about what Hyun Mi had requested of him. He then turned around to a suitcase full of weapons. He wasn’t usually in charge of the executioner’s role.   In Woo Hyun’s silence and patient anticipation of death, he suddenly saw some debris dust falling from above his head. His eyes peered to the ceiling, realizing there was also an air ventilation not so far away from him. And if he listened closely, very closely, he

Chapter 24: I finally finished this today.
I should have seen it coming with Ki Bum since I do watch a couple of spy movies/dramas.
I think my favorite part is seeing Hyun Mi threaten Mr. Lee and then her conflicting view on their mission in the plane.

Chapter 21: I love how there's another reference to HIPS with Hee Jin mentioning she nearly killed someone with a curling iron. It makes me wonder if that's where she got the idea to use it as a weapon.

Chapter 19: I love how Hyun Mi and Woo Hyun are closer which makes it sadder with what happens to him in HIPS.

Chapter 17: I like how this is kind of like a foreshadowing of HIPS and love the cameo of Hee Jin and Min Seok.

Chapter 14: I don't think Woo Hyun is lying to Hyun Mi.
I like how Hyun Mi and those close to her want to change what their company does. I couldn't help but think maybe one of the higher-ups in their company or maybe Ki Bum is using them for their own goals.

Chapter 14: Wait whatt that was unexpected... I've been feeling that Ki Bum and Mr. Lee were slightly off though, so I think they're both probably lying. There's no way Woohyun would actually deserve to be killed...

But on a happier note, yay Taemin and Maerin! The hand holding part was really cute XD

Chapter 12: Love the appearances of the other characters from HIPS, Seollin and Taehyung introducing themselves made me laugh.
I think my favorite part is when Taemin touched the check because one thing I learn from a game called "Women's Murder Club: Death in Scarlet" is that people tend to press a bit hard when writing. So whatever they wrote might be indented into the next sheet of paper.

Chapter 11: The part where they nearly got caught is so intense. It reminded me of a level I played in "Hitman 2", where Agent 47 has about at least 3 to 5 minutes to kill his target before his identity gets discovered.
Also, the two finally kissed! I laughed at the part where Hyun Mi realized the others might have seen it from the CCTV.

Chapter 10: Woo Hyun to the rescue! I find it sweet he's there to save Hyun Mi from Sang Gyu since she and the others were stuck on what to do.
