The Target

The security guards haulted from their positions and marched forward to hold the intruders captive in their grip. Maerin and Tae Min were forced to separate, their arms locked behind their back as if they were criminals on the run. Woo Hyun didn’t put up a fight either knowing he was outnumbered, so he helplessly let himself get captured.   No matter what, the sight still hurt her.   “I need proof,” Hyun Mi’s voice interrupted the scene resembling a one sided assault. She preyed Ki Bum’s hand from her shoulder and headed to Mr. Lee. His favoritism towards her showed considering she was the only one still walking around freely.   “Proof?” Mr. Lee arched his eyebrows with interest.   “We spent many days researching and gathering evidence to determine whether or not the target could be trusted and found him innocent. So I’d like to see the facts that states otherwise before you do anything to him,” she argued. Her eyes refused to look at Woo Hyun knowing she’d grow weak once she sighted him. She knew she would lose all sense of rationale and would fight for him even if he was found guilty as charged.   “Hm, being stubborn has always been the quality I love and hate the most about you,” Mr. Lee hummed to himself as he rubbed the tip of his chin. He snapped his fingers and laid his hand out midair. Soyou understood at once and handed a folder.   “Truth will reveal itself over time,” Woo Hyun’s voice chimed from behind, and again, she didn’t turn to him. She heard him grunt in his pursuit to break free, but all were met relentless.   Mr. Lee seemed to be at ease, having zero care about other’s opinion because he was so certain of the facts he now presented to her.   “Nam Woo Hyun has created the perfect alibi for himself, working as a politician who rallies for consumer and employer’s rights. No one would suspect him to be the one funding all these shady businesses he always rallies against.”   “Since the beginning, the target’s main objective was to get close to you because he knew he could manipulate your emotions and have you fall for him instead. Having you on his side would favor his victory,” Ki Bum now continued, again holding her arm to face him.   “Do you expect her to believe that?” Woo Hyun was shut when the guard holding him placed a black cloth inside his mouth. He only managed to produce inaudible muffled noises now.   Hyun Mi clenched her fingers into a fist, wishing she had taken up combat classes so she wouldn’t be outmatched if she chose to knock over whoever treated Woo Hyun poorly. But she couldn't let the dissettlement in her heart justify her bias to the man she had grown to be fond of.   “Don’t you think it was weird I knew about which room you were staying at the hotel, or even how quickly I showed up at Choi Min Ho’s place after you got shot? I always kept an eye on you and tried my chances to eliminate the target. Who knew you’d persistently protect him to no ends?”   “Ki Bum was the one who shot her?” Maerin gasped under her breath, remembering Hyun Mi was brought to the hospital as the rest continued inspecting the empty house once inhabited by Choi Min Ho. It suddenly made sense.   “That isn’t enough proof. Woo Hyun was the one who brought me to the hospital,” Hyun Mi said, still trying to shape up his innocence to everyone in the room.   “Again, to win you over emotionally.” Ki Bum was rolling his eyes by now, tired of dealing with her reluctance to accept the revelation.   “Perhaps you’d like to see the numbers for yourself,” Mr. Lee suggested, having his secretary show the bank statement to Hyun Mi.   “As you can see, all the companies you have been visiting lately has all been funded by the account holder known as Comme Des. It is actually a camouflaged account we have managed to track down. It's a routing number which, when unmasked through advanced encryption, leads to Nam Woo Hyun’s name.”   “He has secretly been stealing all the money, and managed to collect a large fund. Now that Choi Min Ho is out of the picture, courtesy of Kim Ki Bum, he can use it for his ill intentions.”   Tae Min frowned at the understanding that it was their very own friend Ki Bum who had bestowed such a horrifying death towards Choi Min Ho. It suddenly made sense why he never found any fingerprints on the weapon—it was the trick he had taught his friend himself.   Mr. Lee showed them the yellow notepad they had been looking for. The list contained names of companies they had visited and several others they had faintly heard of before. An amount was written next to their names, assuming the average amount of interest obtained per company.   “Say he did steal the money and has committed the crime of embezzlement, it does not justify a death sentence awaiting him.” Hyun Mi closed the folder containing the bank statements and pushed the note away from her vision. She had seen enough.   “He has been collecting illegal funds to spend on a weaponry in Europe. I heard rumors regarding the existence of a new weapon that can bring massive destruction to mankind, a global epidemic. That was the reason why I kept flying out of Seoul in an attempt to gather more information and to shut it down,” Mr. Lee explained. His tone sounded truthful.   Hyun Mi found herself stripped off of any reasonings left. Important information such as this could not have been made up, and she wondered whether she had indeed been tricked this entire time. Because as much as she hated to admit it, the target did skillfully gain favor of her emotions—perhaps even a little more beyond that.   Her feet mindlessly moved to the target, and she removed the black cloth from his mouth. Her fingers gently cupped the side of his face. Finally she met his eyes, but her judgement was clouded. After all that she was informed with, all she saw in his eyes was still that deep affectionate gaze he had always spared for her alone. Her heart twitched unwillingly.   “Is it true?” She asked him, her voice surprisingly steady.   “I never meant to lie to you,” were the first words he uttered, and something pulled on her heart, intrigued and confused at the same time. “Similar to my ability to discern your lies from the truth, I know you can tell the same thing about me.”   Hyun Mi blinked her eyes, again feeling something tug her heart. Instead of a direct answer, he was presenting her some sort of a riddle. Like he was asking her to make a fair judgement of his character entirely based on their several weeks of knowing each other.   “Even if you do find me guilty of the crimes I am charged with, know that I only spoke the truth during my speech,” he added again.   She assumed the speech referred to the recent political ca

Chapter 24: I finally finished this today.
I should have seen it coming with Ki Bum since I do watch a couple of spy movies/dramas.
I think my favorite part is seeing Hyun Mi threaten Mr. Lee and then her conflicting view on their mission in the plane.

Chapter 21: I love how there's another reference to HIPS with Hee Jin mentioning she nearly killed someone with a curling iron. It makes me wonder if that's where she got the idea to use it as a weapon.

Chapter 19: I love how Hyun Mi and Woo Hyun are closer which makes it sadder with what happens to him in HIPS.

Chapter 17: I like how this is kind of like a foreshadowing of HIPS and love the cameo of Hee Jin and Min Seok.

Chapter 14: I don't think Woo Hyun is lying to Hyun Mi.
I like how Hyun Mi and those close to her want to change what their company does. I couldn't help but think maybe one of the higher-ups in their company or maybe Ki Bum is using them for their own goals.

Chapter 14: Wait whatt that was unexpected... I've been feeling that Ki Bum and Mr. Lee were slightly off though, so I think they're both probably lying. There's no way Woohyun would actually deserve to be killed...

But on a happier note, yay Taemin and Maerin! The hand holding part was really cute XD

Chapter 12: Love the appearances of the other characters from HIPS, Seollin and Taehyung introducing themselves made me laugh.
I think my favorite part is when Taemin touched the check because one thing I learn from a game called "Women's Murder Club: Death in Scarlet" is that people tend to press a bit hard when writing. So whatever they wrote might be indented into the next sheet of paper.

Chapter 11: The part where they nearly got caught is so intense. It reminded me of a level I played in "Hitman 2", where Agent 47 has about at least 3 to 5 minutes to kill his target before his identity gets discovered.
Also, the two finally kissed! I laughed at the part where Hyun Mi realized the others might have seen it from the CCTV.

Chapter 10: Woo Hyun to the rescue! I find it sweet he's there to save Hyun Mi from Sang Gyu since she and the others were stuck on what to do.
