A Step Closer

The Target

In her entire career of working for the organization, Hyun Mi had never encountered a situation where her camouflage would be uncovered, especially by the target himself. She had to give Woo Hyun some props for his incredible sense—either that or she wasn’t excelling as well in her mission ever since a part of her chose to doubt the given instruction.   “I am a motivational speaker, if that’s what you meant,” Hyun Mi answered oh-so-innocently, but he wasn’t buying any of it. Part of her heart thudded louder in panic, but her brain was busy thinking of ways to recover the mess.   The grip against her wrist tightened in an odd gentle manner. He exerted just enough force to get her talking, but considerate enough so it wouldn’t leave any marks.   “Aside from that?” He demanded.   “I’ll tell you if you let go of me.”   “I’ll let go if you tell me.”   Hyun Mi rolled her eyes, knowing this wasn’t going to progress anywhere. He did not seem like the kind of guy who knew when to quit even if the situation required him to. So she had to be the one giving in to the situation in her own way.   “I’m a secret agent tasked to protect you,” she answered, flashing him a sweet smile.   The strength against her wrist decreased and he raised his eyebrows at her.   “That attack at the park right now was proof of someone trying to assassinate you. I was told to protect you under any circumstances,” Hyun Mi then continued, very convincing if she said so herself.   Woo Hyun squinted his eyes. “So why would you wait in front of my bathroom door with a needle in your hand if you wanted to protect me?”   Hyun Mi’s eyes jolted open in shock. She didn’t have time to cover that surprise in front of him. How did he know everything? She had to somehow cover this up.   “You were silent for a moment, so I thought you were attacked inside. In order to help you, I got the weapon ready to attack the assassin.” She looked him straight in the eyes to prove her credibility. A liar would avoid any eye contact.   Woo Hyun smirked at her reply and slowly released her hands from his grip. “Do other people usually fall for your lies? Cause frankly, I can’t seem to believe you,” he uttered.   Hyun Mi stretched her arms and gave him an annoyed look. “Must be because you’re a bluffer, yourself.”   “Let’s just say that the chances of me falling for you are bigger than me falling for your lies.” He pulled away from her.   She frowned; not at him, but at herself for letting her heart get affected by his remarks once again. She should’ve known better by now and tried her best to cancel out the noise.   The target grinned and exited the bathroom. “And I thought you’d be able to make clear judgements after I deliberately gave you the answers to my security questions.”   Hyun Mi paused in the middle of picking up the needle from the ground. She got up and trailed after him like a lost child. “W- what do you mean?”   Woo Hyun’s sudden halt as he hauled to her almost made her bump into him. “Did you really think I would not recognize my own security questions being asked?” He asked, recalling she had inquired about his most influential person and the name of his kindergarten when he allowed her two questions.   “So… Why did you answer them?” She was at a complete loss now.   “I thought you’d be on my side after you found out the truth. That’s why I changed my mind and gave you my number so we could meet up again,” Woo Hyun explained.   The girl blinked, trying her best to keep up with his sudden revelation. “Why would you think I’d be on your side?”   “Because if your sole interest was to kill me, you would’ve made small talk just to catch my attention. But you showed your intention to hack into my bank accounts since the start. I assumed you wanted to confirm something.”   “What if I wanted to steal your money?” She folded her arms.   “I can differentiate people’s motivation from time to time. Your focus was never on my money.”   Hyun Mi was perplexed, knowing she had not given him enough credit for his amazing ability to correctly assess the situation. Part of her was amazed, actually.   “Did you manage to confirm it?” Woo Hyun asked.   She suddenly found herself trusting everything he said. She was still cautious, of course, but his knowledge and intelligence won her over.   “We confirmed your fraud of embezzlement.” Her sudden honesty surprised even herself.   “Because you found suspicious transactions that doesn’t add up, and saw them being transferred to external companies?” Woo Hyun guessed.   “Yes!” Hyun Mi was unable to say anything else for it was true, all of it.   Woo Hyun exhaled deeply and shook his head. He then lifted his face to meet hers and let a smile slip. “Hungry?”   “Huh?”   “I might have to explain a whole lot more, so we might as well have dinner in the meantime.”   “But we can’t go out. What if they find you?”   Woo Hyun smiled again. “I’ll cook.”   “You can cook?” She was utterly amazed again, and this time her tone was that of pure wonderment.   “Seems you should’ve done more research about your target,” he laughed a pleasant tune and headed to the kitchen available in the deluxe suite.     Maerin and Hana were still buried under the heap of papers behind their individual laptops. Dong Woo even had to help out and secure their internet access so that the organization wouldn’t be able to retrace their history. This secret research project went against the mission, after all.   “You know what bothers me?” Maerin suddenly asked while holding a paper up. “Why is there a large outgoing fund to this unknown company? Every month it transfers the exact same amount.”   Hana’s eyes followed the other’s finger, and she immediately entered the data on her laptop to retrieve some information about it. “If I remember correctly, this is the only transaction where it seems like an unknown company, but it is in fact an individual or a sole proprietor by the name of Choi Min Ho.”   “Who is that?” Maerin frowned and Hana shrugged in response.   At that moment, someone started fiddling with the door handle outside their room. The two girls panicked silently and did their best to clear the entire desk so they’d be free of any suspicious activities. Maerin quickly bookmarked her current pages and placed them on an empty seat. Hana even hid all her research windows and changed her desktop to a picture of cute kittens.   The door opened revealing Ki Bum chatting with Lee Tae Min, one of the researchers who was best known for his reputation as a forensic analyst. He was a close friend to them all and was included by Ki Bum in their small rebellion group.   “Tae Min!” Maerin called out to him unconsciously, unable to keep the wide grin off her face. She nearly fainted when Tae Min returned that smile, flashing his perfect row of teeth.   “Are you girls still busy with the politician’s case?” Tae Min asked, casually taking the chair next to Maerin. He leaned in closer to her face to peek at the files she was putting back on the table, and decided to help out by taking the papers from her hand. He did not realize he made the girl’s heart jump thousand somersaults everytime their fingers brushed. “Need me to help?”   “N- no,” Maerin stuttered at their close distance, feeling her heart about to burst in place. She had always liked her senior, and the fact he was so nice to her made it worse. “You already have so many bloody cases to work on.”   Tae Min laughed. “Identifying people’s fingerprints and matching DNA samples are pretty tiring. I wouldn’t mind a change for once,” he clearly hinted at something, and Maerin smiled bashfully in return.   “Found anything new?” Ki Bum interrupted and leisurely sat down. He seemed quite bored being on the restful side of the mission.   “Well, do you know someone named Choi Min Ho?” Hana asked with big hopeful eyes.   Ki Bum flinched a little, giving her a weird stare. “Is h

Chapter 24: I finally finished this today.
I should have seen it coming with Ki Bum since I do watch a couple of spy movies/dramas.
I think my favorite part is seeing Hyun Mi threaten Mr. Lee and then her conflicting view on their mission in the plane.

Chapter 21: I love how there's another reference to HIPS with Hee Jin mentioning she nearly killed someone with a curling iron. It makes me wonder if that's where she got the idea to use it as a weapon.

Chapter 19: I love how Hyun Mi and Woo Hyun are closer which makes it sadder with what happens to him in HIPS.

Chapter 17: I like how this is kind of like a foreshadowing of HIPS and love the cameo of Hee Jin and Min Seok.

Chapter 14: I don't think Woo Hyun is lying to Hyun Mi.
I like how Hyun Mi and those close to her want to change what their company does. I couldn't help but think maybe one of the higher-ups in their company or maybe Ki Bum is using them for their own goals.

Chapter 14: Wait whatt that was unexpected... I've been feeling that Ki Bum and Mr. Lee were slightly off though, so I think they're both probably lying. There's no way Woohyun would actually deserve to be killed...

But on a happier note, yay Taemin and Maerin! The hand holding part was really cute XD

Chapter 12: Love the appearances of the other characters from HIPS, Seollin and Taehyung introducing themselves made me laugh.
I think my favorite part is when Taemin touched the check because one thing I learn from a game called "Women's Murder Club: Death in Scarlet" is that people tend to press a bit hard when writing. So whatever they wrote might be indented into the next sheet of paper.

Chapter 11: The part where they nearly got caught is so intense. It reminded me of a level I played in "Hitman 2", where Agent 47 has about at least 3 to 5 minutes to kill his target before his identity gets discovered.
Also, the two finally kissed! I laughed at the part where Hyun Mi realized the others might have seen it from the CCTV.

Chapter 10: Woo Hyun to the rescue! I find it sweet he's there to save Hyun Mi from Sang Gyu since she and the others were stuck on what to do.
