Things You Said at a Kitchen Table.

Jaebum and Youngjae were visiting Jaebum’s parents’ house for the weekend. With no explanation or reason, Jaebum just out of nowhere announced that the two of them were going to his house. Youngjae didn’t have time to prepare anything, including his nervous system, which was why he was so afraid of having a sudden mental breakdown after seeing Jaebum’s parents. Youngjae was afraid that he was going to freak out because of nothing and make everyone feel uncomfortable, which would make things awkward and Jaebum’s parents would hate him for that.

Youngjae couldn’t concentrate on what Jaebum was saying while they were driving to his parents’ house. It seemed that Jaebum was trying to explain how his house worked and what type of people his parents were but Youngjae didn’t hear any of it. Although all the information Jaebum was giving him at the moment was probably very important and useful for the next two days Youngjae was going to stay there, Youngjae was too busy caring about something else to care about the words dropping from Jaebum’s mouth.

“Youngjae, do you hear me?” Jaebum asked eyes glued on the road. He didn’t want to kill himself and his significant other, especially when they were going to make a life changing announcement soon.

“Yeah, hyung” Youngjae lied though he didn’t hear any of what just Jaebum lectured him.

“Good” Jaebum said continuing to drive both of them to his parents’ house.

“I’m Choi Youngjae, Jaebum hyung’s… close friend” Youngjae awkwardly greeted Jaebum’s parents, his boyfriend of almost one and a half years.

“It’s nice to meet you, Youngjae!” Jaebum’s mother warmly greeted Youngjae as soon as Youngjae stepped into their house.

“Although it’s kind of weird, since Jaebum has never brought a friend over up until now” Jaebum’s mother admitted, hugging both Youngjae and Jaebum as tightly as possible.

“Is that so?” Youngjae awkwardly mouthed, looking at the ground. The whole time Youngjae was greeting and was being greeted by Jaebum’s parents, he was telling himself not to freak out; not to start being weird; not to have another one of his annoying breakdowns that probably annoyed the hell out of Jaebum.

Jaebum, Youngjae and Jaebum’s parents were not sat at the dining table, eating the delicious food Jaebum’s mom prepared all day, trying to make Youngjae feel as comfortable and at home as possible. Jaebum’s dad was trying to discuss soccer with Youngjae as he has played a little in middle and high school, and he was interested in the subject. Frankly, Youngjae pretended to be interested in whatever Jaebum’s parents talked about, whether it’d be sports, politics, the economy and even weather. It was good that Youngjae had some type of knowledge in almost everything as he was easily finding a topic to discuss with both Jaebum’s parents and even at some point he and Jaebum’s dad were having a friendly but heated debate over the current education system.

Everyone was having a grand time. But then Jaebum decided to make the announcement.

“I love Youngjae” Jaebum boldly and bravely said while looking at Youngjae and holding his hand under the table.

“And we’re dating” Jaebum added, adrenaline rushing through his veins, anticipating his parents’ response to his wild statement.

“I really love him” Jaebum said for emphasis.

“That’s great, honey” Jaebum’s mom said while smiling and carried on talking about a quick chocolate cake recipe she had found on the internet with Youngjae.

Youngjae didn’t know what would have happened to him and his relationship with Jaebum if any of Jaebum’s parents had reacted otherwise. And he didn’t want to know.
