That Forgotten Box
The Switch“Aigoo... My Si Jin has grown up well” Aunty Bell sighed happily as she stares at Si Jin and Minguk happily play football. Mo Yeon turned at where the older lady was looking, smiling at the sight. The two of them were at the veranda with the snacks as they watched the two boys run around with the ball.
Aunty Bell was Si Jin’s family caretaker/housekeeper and since the old house was currently empty as his father was still at his hometown, with his father’s permission, Si Jin has decided to hire her first in his own house. Mo Yeon doesn’t feel at ease at first on leaving her son to some stranger but according to Si Jin, Aunty Bell took care of him when he was young and she was very good at it so Mo Yeon give her a chance and it turns out that the old lady was great. She was very caring, helpful and has this positivity that she carried around her. Often times, she found herself chatting with the old lady as Aunty Bell tells her some story about Si Jin’s childhood.
“Aigoo.. Those two won’t stop playing. I know that buying soccer goalposts was not a good idea!” Mo Yeon shakes her head as she stares at the two boys playing nonstop, already sweaty from the heat.
Today was the last day of Si Jin’s vacation and at the same time, it was also her day off so they’ve been trying to make it as enjoyable as it can be. Against her better judgment, she let Si Jin buy those things for her son. As if buying him a bike was not enough, he goes on buying him a soccer goal posts when she told him Minguk does not know how to ride a bike yet. At this rate, she wouldn’t be surprise if Minguk didn’t get spoiled by him.
“You know, sometimes when I look at your son, he kind of looks like Si Jin when he’s at that age” the old lady looked at her wistfully, “It must be my old age”
Mo Yeon didn’t know whether to laugh or be mad at her statement. The mysterious glint on the old lady’s eyes didn’t help the situation. ‘Don’t worry, you’re not the only one’ she wanted to reply but the furious sound of the doorbell stopped her.
Aunty Bell stands up to open the door but Si Jin got there first as Minguk follows him. Imagine her surprise when he came back with her mother who’s carrying Minguk in tow.
“Your mother is here”
“Mom!”
Si Jin and her both said at the same time as he smiled at her sheepily, scratching his neck awkwardly. “Er- I’ll just leave you two” he added when her mother paid him no attention, staring at her worriedly.
“I’ll go with you!” Minguk cried, scrambling to get down from her mother and dashing inside the house where Si Jin just disappeared into. Aunty Bell got up from her place too and heads inside the house when she sees the aura that was coming off from Mo Yeon’s mother.
“How are you?” her mother said dramatically, tears b in her eyes.
“Er- I’m okay” she answered, confused at her mother’s attitude. ‘Why would she not be okay? Why is she even here from the first place? I thought she was still in Italy?’
“I rushed here when I heard that Si Jin has come back” her mother sits next to her holding both her hands comfortingly, “I know that it has been long, but why did you agree on staying with him? Is he forcing you or something?”
“Mom! He’s not forcing me as you kindly put it, he was just being a nice friend” she tried to explain to her mom. Tried was the keyword as her mother was not convinced at her statement. She knows that her mother’s positive view on Si Jin drastically changed after ‘the break up’ as she heard her cursing Si Jin’s name before.
“Yah!” her mother shouted startling her, “I am only looking out for you! I was there when he broke up with you and left you devastated, remember?”
“But mom-“she countered as her mother forcefully hugs her.
“You were so miserable back then that I didn’t know how to comfort you. That’s why I agreed on that procedure-“her mother sobs hard
“Mom I-“Goodness, she couldn’t even get a word in their conversation. If you could call it conversation in the first place, it was more like a monologue.
“I thought you still haven’t gotten over him and I was right! My poor baby! After he broke off your engagement he’s playing house n-“ Mo Yeon’s eyes widened as she heard that one forbidden word. Engagement? When did she become engage? Why did she not know she was even engaged?! And more importantly, With whom? With Si Jin?! Ha! That only happened in her dreams! Those thoughts run on her mind as she struggles on getting off the suffocating arms of her mom.
“Wait.” She blurted out.
“-now with you and Minguk! What is that man thinking after broking off with you, he now-” But her mother was a determined one, not letting go of her tight grip.
“MOM!” Mo Yeon though got enough as she finally escaped her mother’s killer embrace and stared at her bemused. “I just wanted to clarify things. First I was the one who broke up with Si Jin” she said raising a hand when her mother when her mother was about to say something, “Second, I was not, no, never engaged with Si Jin or anyone else for that matter”
Her mother stared at her shocked for a moment as they gazed at each other.
“But what about this?!” her mother got a box out of her pocket and handed it to her. “I found this in your bedside table drawer a week after you two broke up. It was on the farthest part so I thought you intentionally put it there so you’d never see it and I took it with me to spare you from your misery. You never looked for it and I almost forgot about this box until your friend told me you’re living with Si Jin now.
