“I thought you were dead,” Woozi said to Baekho in a stutter when Baekho opened the door for him.

“Do I look dead?” Baekho laughed heartily, taking Woozi’s wrist and pulling him inside the apartment, the address for which Baekho had texted Woozi earlier that day.

“But…”

“Shhh,” Baekho said, putting his finger on Woozi’s quavering lips, “let’s not talk about that now.” He leaned in to kiss Woozi’s lips, and Woozi turned his head and pushed Baekho away.

“What the happened?” Woozi asked Baekho, his eyes filling with tears. “Did you kill those staff members?”

“No,” Baekho replied, reaching out to wipe Woozi’s tears, “I didn’t. It was someone else who started the fire, but I just was not in the building when it happened.”

Woozi closed his eyes, letting a wave of relief engulf him. He had been so scared of finding out that Baekho was the murderer, and so learning otherwise felt like a huge load off his heart.

Woozi had gone out that night, headed for the Pledis building to rendezvous with Baekho like they had planned. But when he arrived at the sight, the fire was already raging. Woozi, not knowing what to do, ran back to the dorm and prayed for Baekho to be all right. When he read the report saying that Baekho was dead, his whole world seemed to crash and burn around him. But there Baekho was. In the flesh. In front of him. Alive. Woozi had never been happier.

Baekho tried again to kiss Woozi’s tear-stained lips. Woozi let him this time.

“I’m so glad you’re alive,” Woozi said, gulping in more tears, “I was so devastated when I…”

“Shh,” Baekho said, bringing Woozi’s head to his chest, “I’m okay, Jihoon-ah. I’m okay.”

Woozi cried in Baekho’s chest, feeling his lovers’ steady heartbeat. How glad he was that Baekho’s heart was still beating. His lover was alive. Baekho was alive. Baekho was alive.

Gradually, however, that heartbeat slowed down. Gradually, Woozi realized that his head was never in his lover’s chest to begin with. As he opened his tired eyes and propped up his aching back, he realized that his head had been on a hard bench that he was made to sleep on in the police department.

Baekho was dead.
