Chapter Four
Smoke & Mirrors
✤ Hana
He’s here again. No, not that physic killer from my dreams. It’s Kai, who came into my aunt’s diner, while I was sitting near the counter talking to my aunt she pointed at something behind me, and there he was in all his grace. I looked back at her and shrugged, pretending not to care at all that he came, but I was actually curious. What is he doing here?
“Go ask him what he wants to order.” She gave me a look that I very well know.
-“No thanks, you have Yura. She can go and take his order.”
“She’s out buying some stuff from the market.” She gave me a light push “Now go.” I cursed under my breath and walked to him rolling my eyes, just standing in front of him. Then that scene from yesterday replayed in my mind, and I felt the blush creeping up my cheeks. I shook my head trying to shake it away as well and looked at him. Why the hell am I blushing?
“What would you like to order?” he leaned back in his chair and folded his arms.
“Shouldn’t you smile at your customers?”
“I’m not working here.”
“Then why are you taking my order? I’d rather some nice smiling waitress take my order.” I swear I can almost hear his smirk as he spoke. I sighed and rolled my eyes, again.
“I’m helping my aunt today.”
“So it means that you’re working here today, and you should smile at your customers today.”
“Oh my god, just say what you want!” I had the urge to break his nose but held myself back.
“Jeez, chill!” he laughed satisfied that he succeeded to get on my nerves. At the end he finally ordered without torturing me more, then I left quickly before he could say anything complaining to my aunt who only laughed at my misery. It’s probably the first time for her to see me so mad.
“I don’t know why you hate him so much, he’s actually a nice guy.”
“Seriously?! How would you know that?”
“His family used to come with them every week, but after their tragic death, he only came with his brother whom I haven’t seen in a while actually.” She seemed to be thinking about the last sentence, probably noting she should ask him about his brother or whatever.
“Do you know about his parents’ death?” I took the chance that my aunt likes to gossip. “In a car accident. It was really awful.” I guess she doesn’t know further information. “Oh hey, he wants you.” She smiled, I looked back at him and groaned.
“When do you finish?” he asked as soon as I reached his table. I was startled a bit by the weird change of tone and topic.
“Ummm… I was planning to leave in a bit, why?”
“I’ll wait for you outside.” He said after leaving the money on the table, and again I was left confused. My eyes followed him and I saw him talking to some guy who wore a hoodie, my guess is that he’s the same guy from yesterday. They both looked at me, and I finally got to see what the guy looked like. He felt familiar somehow, they seemed to talk about me because Kai kept looking back at me. Or maybe I was only being paranoid, I shrugged and went back to clear up some things and get my stuff.
Half an hour later I was ready to leave, as soon as I got out from the diner, I found him leaning against the wall, hands in his pockets and earphones plugged in. I didn’t know what to do, or what he wanted, I looked around for the guy who was with him a while ago but couldn't find him. Then I looked at him again only to find him looking back, he stared for a while then shook his head and removed his earphones.
“Should we work on that project, and continue from where we left?” he asked as he walked up to me to stand right in front of me. Now that I noticed, he’s really tall. “Like right now?” I asked him a little puzzled and suspicious. He only nodded.
