Bias

Like Lightning

Vocal classes were the absolute worst. Even though dance classes were so difficult and music theory was my source of daily humiliation, vocal classes were at another level. They made me feel hopeless.

It didn't help that my vocal teacher wasn't exactly the nicest person ever. On the other hand, I could understand her frustrations at me because she's probably only taught the best trainees on the top tier, never meeting someone who lacked so much, like me.

I bowed several times before exiting the room, promising to practice my singing at every chance I got, and always properly warm up my vocal cords. As soon as I left the room, I breathed out a breath of relief, happy to be done my lessons for the day so early for once. I walked to the elevator and headed to the cafeteria for my small dinner.

"Hey, look who it is, the goddess-like Yoonmi sunbaenim from JYPE."

I looked up to find Luhan walking towards me with his tray of food, then sitting across from me. He was in casual clothes, a simple tee and sweat pants, and his hair pulled back into his snapback, probably spending one of his free days practicing.

"Oh hey, Luhan!" I said cheerfully. I felt my face immediately break into a smile, relaxing at his familiar presence even though we just barely knew each other.

"I snagged an extra banana milk just for you, for being so goddess-like," he said in a lowered voice, quickly passing me a small carton.

"Banana milk?" I accepted the carton and examined it. The small box had a cute banana drawing on it, matching with the bright yellow background, and I could actually recognize some Korean words on it.

"Trust me, it's best thing you'll find around here."

I poked my straw through the hole in the carton and took a sip. It tasted exactly like its name, like banana flavoured milk. Luhan seemed to gauge my reaction then gave me a knowing nod.

"I told you so." He smiled. "Anyway, sorry about the other times we've met, I know that's not exactly the best first impression to make."

"Ah, that's alright, I had fun filming for EXO TV actually. I'm honoured that I got to be a part of it." I flashed a smile, thinking back to that interesting time in the practice room.

"Oh, EXO TV, yeah, that's just mainly for when we get really bored. We like to practice filming all these videos for the day SM would let us have our own reality show...maybe in like fifty years." Luhan's rolled his doe eyes, his lips set into a light scowl.

"A reality show seems like a really good idea, I'm sure your fans would love any videos you guys release." I said, sipping on the banana milk.

"That's exactly the problem though; there are so many ideas for a show already. Including a comedy where EXO members move in next door to this fan." He then paused and looked deep in thought for a moment. "Oh. I shouldn't even be telling you this." Luhan chuckled lightly then focused his bright eyes on me. "What about you? You and your members do anything fun like that?" He leaned in, eyes shining with excitement as if we were discussing something secret.

"Uh, not really, I haven't actually been here all that long yet." I replied.

"Ah, well don't worry, you still have a long way to go." The corners of his eyes crinkled as he smiled. "Oh, here's an important question for you," he paused, leaning even closer to me, "have you become an EXO fan yet?"

I laughed at his behaviour. He might be a good-looking visual, but his face also seemed to be very versatile, showing off a wide range of expressions. "Hmm, what if I say no?" I asked jokingly. EXO had probably already become my favourite group in the short time that I've known them, and the members all seemed like really nice people.

"Then I guess I'd just have to keep this up until you've fallen deeply and irrevocably in love with us, of course." He said, rolling his eyes. "Wait, who's your favourite member then?" He frowned slightly, eyes squinting as if trying to examine me for an answer.

"I- uh..." An image of Chen's smile flashed into my mind before the image was replaced by the bright doe eyes in front of me.

"Oh my gosh, don't tell me it's me; I've heard that one too much." Luhan chuckled, relaxing back into his seat.

"Wow, maybe you should've became a psychic instead of an idol." I said, raising an eyebrow.

"Wait, are you telling me that I'm right?" He raised his eyebrows, looking at me skeptically.

"Well I'm not telling you you're wrong..." I said slowly, trying to hide my smile.

"Yes! Officially became the goddess' number one bias!" He stood up dramatically with his arms in the air and spun once around while I was laughing at how silly he looked, so different from his stage persona.

Just as our table was attracting lots of head turns, Chen just happened to walk by holding a tray, with another guy beside him who was probably another EXO member.

"What is this I hear, about a goddess?" Chen stopped by our table slid into the booth seat right beside me, while the other guy sat down beside Luhan.

"I just became the goddess' bias," Luhan sat back down and leaned back in his seat while crossing his arms. "Bow down, peasants."

"What?! Hyung, are you trying to steal my girl?" Chen put a shocked face on.

"Guys, what's going on? I'm so lost." The other EXO member said, joining in with fluent Chinese as well.

"Oh right, Rachel, this is Zhang Yixing, or EXO's Lay," Chen said, introducing the other guy sitting at our table. Yixing blinked at me slowly, nodding. "And this is Rachel, SM's newest and cutest trainee. But you can't steal her because she's mine already." Chen scowled at Luhan.

"It's nice to meet you." I said, flashing a smile at Yixing.

"Nice to meet you too! Welcome to SM!" He replied cheerfully, a dimple visible on one cheek when he smiled. "Wait, what were you guys talking about? Biases?"

"Uh..." I raised an eyebrow and exchanged a look with Chen who was sitting beside me. Much too close beside me.

"Her favourite member, of course." Chen said, starting to eat the food on his tray.

"Which, she said, is me." Luhan interjected, rolling his eyes.

"Well..." I started, a smile playing at my lips.

"Wait, so who's actually your favourite member?" Yixing then asked.

"Hey guys, why are you all here?" A voice interrupted, saving me from answering. "What did I miss?" I turned to see Tao coming by with his tray and sitting down at the small table right beside ours, as ours was more than full already.

"Wow, this must be EXO-M's common dinner or something." I laughed.

"Yah, so who is it?" Luhan asked, leaning across the table again in anticipation. "It's still me, right?"

"Well..." I cleared up my tray and stood up, ready to leave for my scheduled practice time in the dance studio. "It's actually Tao ge." I chuckled, walking away from their dropped jaws and wide-eyed stares. I dumped my garbage in the garbage can and dropped my tray off.

"Yah! I'm going to kill this maknae!" Luhan shouted as both him and Chen got up from their seats and reached for Tao. I chuckled, feeling energetic in time for dance practice.
