The Insane

Remember the Rhododendrons

The first thing Jieun noticed the moment she stepped outside the next morning was how close the buildings were. The metal roads completely disappeared and the buildings were much closer than last night. She also noticed that the city was a lot brighter than any other places she had been in this world. She wasn't sure if it was because of the moon, but the area required her to squint for a while until she adjusted to the bright weather.

Myungsoo came outside, holding a clear protractor in his hands. He lifted it in the air, measuring the distance between the two yellow beams in the sky. Then, he closed the protractor like a paper fan and shoved it in his pocket. He glanced at Jieun, who only stared at him.

"Donghae should be coming soon," he told her.

"Is it just me, or are the buildings a lot more closer than last night?" Jieun asked him.

"Oh, yeah. The city of Canis does that. In the day light, the werewolves take a human form. When they take a human form, they don't use as much energy to walk around. At night, they become werewolves, and that requires them to run around a lot. They can't run around in cramped spaces, so the city made it possible that in the day light, the buildings are closer, but in the night time, the buildings are more spread out," Myungsoo explained.

"Oh." Jieun looked around. "I wonder when Donghae's coming…"

As if on cue, the fellow elf ran towards the duo. Donghae panted, exhausted from running under the weather. He looked around.

"Where are the other two?" Donghae asked.

"They're resting," Myungsoo informed him. "I'm also planning to stay back with them."

Jieun widened her eyes. "You aren't coming with me?"

"I would love to, but I can't. Mino's unconscious and Naeun just started recovering her voice. If I'm not there, then some kind of misunderstanding might arise."

"Well, I don't see any problem with that. Actually, it makes my situation a lot better," Donghae said. He turned to Jieun. "I actually need to talk to you in private. It's very important."

Jieun turned and looked at Myungsoo.

"If you trust him, then you should follow him," Myungsoo said. "I don't know anything about him, so I can't help you. He doesn't seem to be a bad person, though."

"So are you coming?" Donghae asked Jieun. Jieun paused for a minute, then slowly nodded her head. Donghae smiled. "Good! Follow me."

"Where are we going?" Jieun asked.

"The place where I've staying," Donghae said. "Come."

Jieun bit her lip, but followed him anyway. Myungsoo watched the two disappear off to another building. As he turned back, he saw Taemin standing still, watching the two walk away.

"Hey," Myungsoo said, greeting him.

"Hi," Taemin said, his eyes still on Jieun's back. "Where is she going?"

"She needs to talk with him in private."

"Private? Why?"

"I don't know. I didn't question it." Myungsoo looked at him. "How'd you get in?"

"The guards let me in." Taemin glanced at Myungsoo, who stared at him. "What?"

"I'm serious, Taemin. How'd you get in? Did you climb the walls?"

"They let me in," Taemin said.

"They just let you in?"

"They just let me in."

"You must've done something!"

"I did…nothing." Taemin gave him a small smirk before walking into the inn.

I swear, he's not what he seems to be, Myungsoo thought, shaking his head.

Donghae opened the door to a random house. He gestured Jieun to step inside, which she did. Upon entering, she noticed that there was another elf-like creature sitting on a chair, holding a basket full of strangely-colored fruits. Donghae stepped inside and closed the door behind him. Once the door was locked, Jieun started to realize that the windows were shut and candles were the only source that light in the room.

"Gosh, you scared me, Donghae!" the elf exclaimed.

"Sorry," Donghae said. He looked around, as if he was checking for something. Then, he looked at Jieun, who stared at the stranger in an odd manner. "Oh, right. Jieun, this is Kyuhyun. Kyuhyun, this is Jieun."

"So she's the one who reads?" Kyuhyun asked him.

"And she's the one with two powers," Donghae said, grinning.

"Um, what's going on?" Jieun asked them.

"Doors locked? Windows closed?" Kyuhyun asked. Donghae nodded. "Good."

He dropped the basket next to him and started to walk crawl on all fours. He removed another chair and slid a rug closer to the walls. Then, he knocked down on the floor. A few seconds later, the floor started to open up. Jieun widened her eyes, shocked at the hidden room.

Donghae took a candle from the side and looked down at the hole. He gestured Jieun to follow him down the floor. She stared at the room, unsure if following was a good idea. Nevertheless, she chased after Donghae while Kyuhyun followed behind the two and closed the entrance. Donghae blew out the candle, and the room started to light on its own.

"The technology here is amazing," Jieun said, impressed.

"Is it?" Donghae asked. "There's no chair, so you'll have to sit on the floor.

"I have no problem with that," she said. "Anyway, what did you want to talk about?"

"This," Kyuhyun said. He handed her a book and opened it to a specific page. "I've been secretly trying to decode the text, and I was hoping that you would be able to help me."

"I thought reading was illegal?" Jieun said.

"It is. Last time, Donghae took the bait for me and that's why he ended up in jail," Kyuhyun explained. "When he came back, he told me about you, and since then I've been dying to see you."

"He thinks you're the god of this world," Donghae said, shaking his head. "I think he's insane, but in a sane way. Does that make sense?"

"Wait, I don't think I'm in any position to help you guys," Jieun said. "I'm not from this world and I don't know anything except that I have two kinds of powers: one that makes wishes come true and the other that makes these strings come out."

Kyuhyun looked at Donghae. "She has to be the Creator."

"She's not the Creator."

"The Creator?" Jieun repeated, frowning.

"The one who has created this world. He possesses the power to create and destroy this world as he pleases," Kyuhyun said. "You see, I believe that the Creator is amongst us. I've been reading these books and hoping to find an answer, but they only hold ancient history."

"B-But I'm not the Creator," Jieun said. "I came down a well and fell here with another guy."

"See? She's the Creator!" Kyuhyun cried out. He grabbed another book and flipped it rapidly. "Here! Here! It says that the Creator 'fell into the well, drowning in a sea of flowers that released a hallucinating scent of burning clovers and cinnamon.'"

Jieun stared at the text. "I didn't… I don't think…"

Am I really the Creator? she wondered. Is Mino a Creator?

"So," Kyuhyun said, closing the book, "when are you going to destroy the world?"

Destroy the world? Jieun looked at Kyuhyun. "What do you mean?"

"The Creator said that once he collected more of his kinds, he will destroy the world he made so that he can prevent the people who came in from coming out, and to prevent unnecessary people from tainting his world." Kyuhyun's eyes shimmered. "Will you make me one of your kind?"

"Woah, woah, woah. Back it up," Jieun said quickly. "I don't have that kind of power."

"You have the Galaxial Wish!" Kyuhyun exclaimed. Jieun widened her eyes while he grabbed another book. "It's here! The yellow stone and red stone! The possibilities are endless, but if you're the same species as the Creator, you will have the Galaxial Wish—the power to grant wishes—and the Galaxial Fate—the power to rewrite the person's fate."

"I—You—Me—What?" Jieun stared at Kyuhyun. "Are you crazy?"

"Please, stop pretending that you aren't aware," Kyuhyun said. "We know it's you."

Jieun looked at Donghae. "I don't know what else to say. How did you guys come up with such a conclusion?"

"I don't think you're the Creator," Donghae said bluntly. "I really don't. He, however, thinks you are because you have a rare power."

"It's one-of-a-kind," Kyuhyun said. "You have to be the Creator. You have to be!"

"Look, I'm not from this world. I'm not, seriously," Jieun confessed. "I have powers, I do. I know one of them is Galaxial Wish, but I don't think I have the Galaxial Fate."

Kyuhyun, shaking, grabbed her shirt. Jieun tried to scream, but Kyuhyun covered with his hands.

"Listen carefully," Kyuhyun whispered, his eyes boiling with insanity, "you are the Creator. You are the one who freaking created everything. You are the Creator! You understand?"

Jieun's eyes widened with upmost fear. She had no clue on what was going on. Her whole body burned with terror and confusion. She struggled a bit, but stopped when Kyuhyun grabbed tighter onto her clothes and pushed her against the wall.

Bang!

Kyuhyun stared at Jieun with long, empty eyes. His eyes slowly rolled back and loosened his grip. While turning, he mindlessly fell to the ground, completely knocked out. With quivering lips, she looked behind Kyuhyun and saw Donghae with a large book in his hands. Donghae panted for a moment, as if he couldn't believe that he had bashed his friend's head.

"Do you understand," Donghae started in a hush voice, "why we don't encourage this world to read?" He pointed at the unconscious boy. "You turn to that."

"B-But he looked so normal upstairs," Jieun murmured.

"A hero always looks good on the outside," he said, dropping to book to his side, "but you will never know all the crimes that the hero had to commit to earn that title."

Jieun wasn't sure what he meant, but she only nodded her head. She watched Donghae drag Kyuhyun's body to the corner of the room.

"H-Have you r-read?" Jieun asked.

"No, I honestly haven't," Donghae said. "Honestly, I tried, but I never got the hang of it. I would hear all these theories from Kyuhyun." He looked at her. "It doesn't seem like we get affected when we listen to these theories. I think going insane only occurs when you're reading it."

"Will he be okay?"

"Him? Yeah. I've done this plenty of time," Donghae said. "You should go. I'll deal with him when he wakes up."

"What happens if he gets caught?"

"With how insane he is, he'll probably end up getting executed," he revealed. "As his friend, I'm trying my best not to get him caught. It's difficult. Really, it's difficult."

"Will you be okay?" Jieun asked him.

"For now, yeah," he said. "Please don't tell anyone about this." Jieun nodded. She was getting ready to leave until Donghae grabbed her wrist. "Wait. I really want to talk about your powers."

Jieun frowned, but patiently waited for him to take another book out from the bookshelf. He flipped it to a specific page, then started to rip out a few pages before giving them to Jieun.

"Kyuhyun was talking about something related to you. I marked the pages so that if I ever met you, I can give them to you," Donghae said.

"What are these about?" she asked curiously.

"I'm not exactly sure, but I believe it has to do with the history of the Galaxial powers." He paused. "Also, I don't think you should stay here any longer. While I was coming here, I saw a member of the Council's Court here. They've been showing papers that describe you perfectly."

Jieun paled. "No way…"

"You need to be more aware of who you socialize with now. The Council's Court is infamous for their ability to disguise themselves are regular citizens." Jieun gave him a weary look. "Oh, don't worry. I'm not part of the Council's Court."

"How can I tell?" she asked nervously.

Donghae paused, then let out a sigh. "I'm not supposed to tell you any of this, but all of the Council's Court wears a special symbol with a flower and the weapon of a the Council Leader's weapon. In this case, you should be cautious around people who have flowers and a spear symbol on their robe."

"So I just need to remember that pattern?"

"Yeah, but don't assume that the pattern is visible. It might be tattooed to their back or hidden under their tongue. It can be anywhere."

"Why are you helping me?" she inquired.

Donghae looked at her cautiously. "I overheard some of the Council's Court talking about you. The way they talked was so…brutal." He looked down. "Also, you helped me out during the time we were in jail. You helped me with my studies on two-gemmed people."

Jieun nodded her head. "Thank you. Thank you so, so much!"

Donghae smiled. He was about to help her go back onto the surface until the two heard footsteps. They froze and listened carefully to everything going.

"Find anything suspicious!" someone shouted. "The Wanted One is here! She's here somewhere! Be careful of her, too! She has the Galaxial Wish. If you frighten her, she will wish for a massacre!"

Jieun widened her eyes and started to tremble. Donghae bit his bottom lip and pushed her away from the entrance.

"What do I do? What do I do?" she whispered hastily.

"You need to wish yourself out of here," Donghae said.

"What about you?"

"I'll be fine. I'll probably be put back in jail or something."

"I can't just leave you! I'll help you get out, too! I might be able to wish the both of us out of here!" Jieun said.

"I can't leave Kyuhyun," Donghae said.

"Then I'll wish the three of us out!"

"No, I don't want that," Donghae murmured. "Kyuhyun is going to wake up and people are going to notice."

"Well I can't just leave you like this!" she exclaimed.

"Sir! We heard voices from below!" someone above announced.

"Sir, the floor is hollow. There's a room below!" someone else said after banging a weapon against the floor.

"Open it!"  another person said.

"Go!" Donghae exclaimed.

"I-I can't just leave!" Jieun stuttered.

"Then… Please wish for our safety," Donghae said.

Jieun looked at him, then slowly nodded her head. She closed her eyes and clasped her hands into a prayer. Her heart started to pound every time she heard the people above smash weapons against the floor.

I wish, she prayed, that Donghae and Kyuhyun can get out of this mess safely, and that I will be transported to where my friends are.

Gold dust trickled down from her hands and sprinkled themselves onto Donghae and Kyuhyun without the boys knowing. In a blink of an eye, she had disappeared from the elves and found herself back at the inn, where she saw Naeun, Mino, Myungsoo and Taemin being pinned against the wall by people wearing royal robes with a flower and a spear attached to it.

So---I actually got to the point after reading Mythos that I wanted to read all your other stories and started them, even if it wasn't a ship that I liked in particular. BUT!!! I really have nothing but praise for this story. Everything that was written her was perfectly done, even if at times I admit I did want to skip a few chapters (ALRIGHT I SKIPPED 2 CHAPTERS ONLY TWO). Even if you said this was a poorly written plotline, it had an IMMENSE amount of potential, and it hooked me from the beginning right to the very end.

If only I could write lengthy stories like that xD I have the tendency to write good short stories, but fail when it comes to plotting of the long long ones xD

Chapter 59: Aw taemin, my heart aches so much for him. Both him and jieun will be lonely again tho. Mino for sure won't remember his friendship with jieun and jieun will return back to her lonely life. Taemin created the worl because he's lonely but in the end, he will forever be lonely again. Ah this is sad. Anyway, good luck for your new fanfic.... I'm so gonna read that.
