(YJ) – Young Jae speaking
(DH) – Daehyun speaking
(BY) – Yongguk speaking
(KR) – Krystal speaking

(GY) – Grandma Yoo speaking

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Here and there, Grandma Yoo set everything up on one of her favorite trays. Although a little worn from age, the floral tray was still as sturdy as ever. As she finished neatly setting everything up, Grandma Yoo smiled a bit as she made certain that she had everything. With two young boys staying with her now, Grandma Yoo found it slightly more difficult to be caring for them. Having to prepare and serve two different meals and drinks meant multiple trips. However, Grandma Yoo didn’t mind. She was actually happy to have them staying with her. It was much more livelier here and she was happy that Young Jae finally had someone else that seemed to genuinely care for his wellbeing. She had been a bit worried that Young Jae may have been lonely without anyone his age around. With how much he studies and stays cooped up in his room, it was a bit of a refresher and a relief to see that someone was there to make sure that he actually took his breaks whenever they came up.

Picking up the tray, Grandma Yoo made certain that nothing fell over before she turned and began walking. At the moment, the two teenage boys should be studying in Young Jae’s room. She hoped that Young Jae and Daehyun were studying well, but she did know that they were going to have to take a break eventually. This would hopefully be a nice way for them to regain their energy. Grandma Yoo would have even baked some nice goodies for the two to eat, but Young Jae had come back home with some delicious pastries that he seemed to often get from a bakery. She had told Young Jae time and time again to save his money, but it seemed like he had his mother’s inability to save money.

Stopping in front of the door, Grandma Yoo paused for a moment as she tried to think. Normally, when she was about to give food or a drink to Young Jae, she would usually be able to hold the tray with one hand. However, considering the fact that she was holding a full meal on the tray, she couldn’t exactly do that. They usually ate their meals together, but this time, Young Jae and Daehyun had started studying since Young Jae felt like he was behind in his studies. Either way, her current health may be good, but she wasn’t as strong as she used to be. Looking around for a brief moment, Grandma Yoo decided to call out to them. “Young Jae? Daehyun? Are you two studying well?” (GY)

“Yes grandma!” (YJ)

“Young Jae? Will you be a dear and open the door for me?” (GY) At first, it didn’t seem like either of the two teens had heard him. However, after hearing a few quiet voices and a bit of shuffling, Grandma Yoo could hear footsteps approaching the door.  The door opened up and to her surprise, it wasn’t her cute grandson that had opened it for her.

“Woah! Food! Is that for me or for Young Jae? Here, let me take it.” (DH) Daehyun gently lifted the tray from Grandma Yoo’s grasp before turning around and walking over to Young Jae. Grandma Yoo watched as Daehyun carefully set each dish down in an area that Young Jae wasn’t using, most likely to avoid getting in the way of his studying. She was rather surprised that Daehyun had decided to give the food to Young Jae first instead of taking it himself. She was quite well aware of Daehyun’s love for food, so it made her wonder why Daehyun would obtain his food second. Of course, it did warm her heart to know that there were still young men whom seemed to care for the wellbeing of others. “Here you go. You better eat well, yeah?” (DH)

“Thank you.” (YJ) Young Jae looked up at Daehyun and gave a brief smile before he went back to studying. Daehyun frowned a bit that Young Jae was going to make the food wait, but he did understand the need to finish reading a certain section. Walking back over to the door, Daehyun grinned as he kept the tray in his hands.

“Do I get food too?” (DH)

“Of course! Shall I go get it?” (GY) Daehyun shook his head as he held a smile.

“It’s okay. Don’t trouble yourself! I’ll go get it. You just rest up, but don't get too energetic now!” (DH) Once he had moved around Grandma Yoo, Daehyun eagerly made his way to the kitchen. Grandma Yoo held an amused smile as she shook her head a bit before looking back towards Young Jae. With a warm smile, Grandma Yoo made her way over to Young Jae before softly running a hand along the back of Young Jae’s head.

“Oh... My cute grandson. Are you studying well? Will you take a break soon?” (GY) Young Jae nodded as he kept his attention on his textbook. He would have given a better response, but he was a bit too focused on studying. Holding her smile, Grandma Yoo had just turned when she saw Daehyun entering with his food and a large grin on his face. However, it seemed like he had added a few additional items to his meal, which caused Grandma Yoo to give a brief chuckle. “That’s a lot of food. Will you be able to finish it?” (GY)

“Of course! If it’s delicious, I’ll make sure not to leave anything left on my plate.” (DH) Daehyun grinned as he set the tray onto the bed before crawling onto it. Grandma Yoo had just now noticed the books that were sprawled out on the bed, which showed that Daehyun was efficiently studying just as hard as Young Jae was. She watched Daehyun set all of the dishes onto the bed and his drink on the side table before he set the tray to the side. Grandma Yoo picked up the tray before smiling a bit.

“Don’t work too hard.” (GY)

“Okay.” (DH) After Daehyun flashed his grin, he quickly started eating. Grandma Yoo shook her head a bit as she soon made her way out of the bedroom. Once she was gone, Young Jae glanced over at Daehyun, watching him eat. His eating habit was similar to that of Mr. Jung’s and Jongup’s, but it was possible that that was a coincidence. Even the way he held his chopsticks was similar to his mother’s. How did he know? Well, he wasn’t really sure how he knew. He just… knew. “What? Do I have something on my face?” (DH)

“H-Huh…? O-Oh! Um… Nothing.” (YJ) While Daehyun was wiping his mouth out of precaution, Young Jae quickly turned his attention forward. Pushing his books forward, he quickly pulled his food in front of him one at a time before picking up his chopsticks. However, he couldn’t help but continue glancing over at Daehyun, absentmindedly eating in the process.

“You know what? I haven’t seen any of your drawings yet! Show me your drawings.” (DH) Young Jae stared at Daehyun, whom stared back. They continued this staring contest, Young Jae unwavering as Daehyun sat there slightly confused. “Uh… What is it? Let me see you drawings.” (DH)

Once Young Jae seemed to have snapped out of it, his eyes widened as he quickly looked away. Panic was swiftly kicking in as he tried to think of what to do. On one hand, he knew that he had to do whatever Daehyun said and thus, he had to show Daehyun his drawings. However, on the other hand, he had a drawing of Daehyun that he hadn’t finished. Even if it wasn’t finished though, the drawing still resembled Daehyun and he didn’t want him to see it. He just… needed to come up with a lie, right? It wouldn’t hurt to lie about something like this… right? “I-I, um… I don’t have any right now.” (YJ)

“Really? But your sketchbook’s on the table.” (DH) Young Jae’s eyes shot towards his sketchbook, which really was currently sitting on a stack of other notebooks. Biting his bottom lip, Young Jae tried to think about how he was going to get out of this. “Can I see it?” (DH)

“U-Um… T-There’s still… a lot of drawings I haven’t finished and um… I don’t want to show it yet.” (YJ) Daehyun nodded as he gave a small shrug before turning his attention back to his food. Young Jae was rather surprised that that had worked, but he wasn’t going to question it. He kind of regretted drawing that picture of Daehyun, but… he wasn’t about to get rid of it. In fact, it was probably his favorite drawing yet and he really wanted to finish it before showing anyone, especially Daehyun.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

“So… What kind of person are you into?” (DH) Daehyun waited as Young Jae sat there thinking. He couldn’t help but grin as he saw Young Jae instantly begin to turn red before looking away. Moving a bit closer to Young Jae, Daehyun wrapped an arm around Young Jae’s shoulders before pulling him in to keep him from getting away. Of course, they were currently waiting for the bus, so there wasn’t any other place that Young Jae could run off to. “Well? Do you have a type?” (DH)

“I-I… N-No…?” (YJ)

“Well… Maybe I can be your type.” (DH) Young Jae’s eyes widened as he instantly stiffened. Did… Daehyun really say what he thought he said?! Was he actually trying to reveal his true feelings?! Was this the kind of answer that he had been searching for this entire time? “You know… as a sort of template. You can build off me and figure out what you like and don’t like, yeah?” (DH)

Okay, so that wasn’t exactly what Young Jae had expected, but… maybe this was the kind of help he had been looking for. Judging by his own reaction though, maybe he really did have a crush on Daehyun. Was it really that simple though? Was the answer always there the entire time? Well… it would at least explain the reason behind him drawing the picture of Daehyun. “What do you think? I think it’s a pretty good idea.” (DH)

“U-Um… I… I don’t know…” (YJ)

“Oh? So I’m not your type?” (DH) Young Jae’s eyes widened as he quickly looked back at Daehyun.

“N-No! You are! W-Wait… I-I mean…” (YJ) Young Jae turned back away as he quickly held his cheeks out of surprise. Did he just… confess to Daehyun that he was his type?! He had to come up with something to fix this, but he really didn’t know how he was going to do that. It didn’t help that Daehyun’s chuckle was making him feel even more embarrassed than before. “I-I mean that, um… uh…” (YJ)

“So I’m your type after all! Does that mean that… you like boys?” (DH) Young Jae quickly shook his head, which unknown to Young Jae, caused Daehyun to hold a disappointed look on his face. Of course, he merely gave a small smile as he rubbed Young Jae’s arm a bit. “Ah. So you like my personality then, eh? Well… Let’s see… What kind of girls would act like… well, me.” (DH)

Did Daehyun really believe that? He almost doubted it, but he wasn’t going to question it. If Daehyun really did believe it, then that means that he wouldn’t have to worry anymore about Daehyun thinking otherwise. “Ah… We can think about it later! For now, let’s just think about something else, liiiike... your sketchbook! Can I see your drawings yet?” (DH)

“N-No…?” (YJ) There were a number of drawings that Daehyun could have seen, but he still didn’t want to let Daehyun see the drawing of him. If he had another sketchbook, which he doesn’t, he probably would have let Daehyun see that one. “I-I um… I still haven’t finished any of my drawings.” (YJ)

“Oh… Well, I’ll wait patiently then. Just make sure to show it to me when you’re done, alright?” (DH) Daehyun looked at Young Jae, whom gave a shy nod. For whatever reason, Young Jae was still looking away from him and he seemed to still be either shy or embarrassed by it. Daehyun did wonder what kind of drawings Young Jae had, but he was just going to have to wait and see when Young Jae was ready to reveal it. “So… Uh...” (DH)

“T-The bus is here!” (YJ) Young Jae quickly got to his feet before walking up to the edge of the sidewalk. Daehyun raised a single brow before getting up and following after Young Jae. It felt like Young Jae was attempting to avoid him now, which didn’t really make any sense to Daehyun. It was alright though. As long as Young Jae doesn’t feel completely uncomfortable around him, then Daehyun didn’t see any problem with it.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

“Wow, Young Jae! That’s a nice drawing! He looks so handsome too.” (KR) Young Jae looked up to see Krystal hovering over his shoulder. He turned a deep shade of red, his face turning back to his drawing of Daehyun. He has had to do both realistic and anime kind of drawing styles, but for this one, he felt like he had to keep it as realistic as possible. It was a nice scene and he wanted to capture as much of this scene as he could remember. It did help that he had Daehyun constantly around for him to look at. “Is he a character you made?” (KR)

“N-No… Um… He’s… someone real…” (YJ)

“What are you two doing?” (BY) Young Jae and Krystal both looked up to see Yongguk coming to a stop in front of them. He had walked over to them out of curiosity, but it was nice to also strengthen friendships between classmates. Looking down, his eyes had briefly glanced down at the drawing before completely locking in on it. “That…” (BY)

“Isn’t it great? It’s really life-like! So, Young Jae… who is he?” (KR) Young Jae wasn’t necessarily certain if he should say anything or not. It shouldn’t be too much of a problem since they didn’t know Daehyun, so maybe it would be alright to just say what his name is. While he was contemplating, Yongguk had moved around to get a better view of the picture.

“Is that… Daehyun…?” (BY) Both Young Jae and Krystal looked up as they stared at Yongguk either out of curiosity or surprise. Young Jae hadn’t expected Yongguk to know who it was and he wanted to know how Yongguk knew Daehyun. “Yeah… I’m certain it is.” (BY)

“Um… how do you know Daehyun?” (YJ) Yongguk stared at the drawing for a little longer before he looked at Young Jae. Standing up straight, Yongguk folded his arms as he smiled a bit. Just like Young Jae, Yongguk was rather surprised that Young Jae knew who Daehyun was as well.

“He was a friend of mine back in lower secondary school. Were you friends with him back then as well?” (BY) Young Jae fiddled around with his fingers as he tried to think. Why were Yongguk and Daehyun not friends anymore? Maybe he could fix their friendship by having them meet again. It would be nice to have more friends to talk to. Plus, they were old friends. Young Jae couldn’t see why they couldn’t be friends again.

“U-Um… no. I met him a few months ago.” (YJ) When Young Jae looked up at Yongguk, he could see that he had a surprised look on his face. Why was he so surprised? It shouldn’t be that big of a shock… right? He didn’t know whether it would be alright to ask about it or not, but he decided to do so anyway. “U-Um… What is it?” (YJ)

“That… Are you sure…?” (BY)

“What is it, Yongguk? Why are you so surprised by it?” (KR) Yongguk looked at Krystal for a brief moment before looking back down at the drawing. Now that he thought about it… the picture did display Daehyun a little older than he remembered. In fact, he was even wearing their uniform.

“I don’t really know. I just haven’t seen him since then. (BY) Young Jae looked back down at his drawing with a confused look on his face. Daehyun just… disappeared? That wouldn’t explain why he wouldn’t want to be with his family though. In fact, it didn’t explain a lot of things. Young Jae wanted to ask Daehyun about it, so he would probably have to wait until lunchtime to do so.

“Um… I’ll ask him. I didn’t even know that he just… disappeared.” (YJ)

“So… what happened to him? Do you know how or why you haven’t seen him since then?” (KR) Young Jae looked up at Yongguk, quite curious about how that had occurred as well. Yongguk thought for a moment, attempting to gather up his memories as best as he could. When he was certain that he remembered everything to the best of his capability, he decided to speak. Of course... he actually knew a little more than he was about to explain, but he decided to stay quiet about it for now.

“If I recall… he got into a fight with his parents and ran away out of anger. From what I heard from Daehyun the last time I saw him, Daehyun wanted to stop home schooling and go to a real school. Since I was his closest friend at the time, Daehyun wanted to come to this school specifically, but his parents didn’t want him to go. After that… well, I don’t know what happened to him.” (BY) Young Jae and Krystal both frowned as they took in the explanation. Young Jae was rather surprised that Daehyun had gotten into a fight with his parents in the first place. Was that why he wasn’t living with them now? It would make sense if he still was angry at them, but it wouldn’t explain why or how he was attending this school now.

“Oh… That’s so sad…” (KR)

“I’m surprised that he’s attending this school though. I know most of the students in our grade level, so I would have seen him already.” (BY) Now that he thought about it, it really was weird that they hadn’t met yet. The fact that Young Jae had to tell Yongguk about it confused Young Jae. Did that mean that Daehyun was just really good at keeping secrets? Did it mean that his family was trying to keep it a secret? If that were the case, then… why would they do that? “So, if you see him, tell him I said hey.” (BY)

“Um… O-Okay… Oh! Um… I actually eat lunch with him everyday. Do you… want to come too?” (YJ) Young Jae looked up at Yongguk, whom seemed to be in the middle of thinking. He really would have liked to tag along, but Yongguk usually had something to do during lunch.

“I might be able to stop by, but for the most part… I can’t. Maybe next time?” (BY)

“Hey! Maybe I can go and report back to you, Yongguk.” (KR) Both males looked at Krystal, whom was currently smiling. Although she wasn’t even an acquaintance of Daehyun’s, Krystal did want to make sure that he was doing well. It would probably help Yongguk feel better to have a second person’s say on the situation. Plus… she wanted to meet him.

“Hm… I guess that’s not a bad idea. What do you think, Young Jae?” (BY) Young Jae looked at Yongguk before nodding. With a satisfied smirk, Yongguk folded his arms once more as he shifted his weight onto his left leg. “Then I guess that’s the plan. Krystal, I expect a full report on Daehyun’s status.” (BY)

“Yes sir!” (KR) Krystal gave a brief salute before all three of them laughed a bit. Young Jae was looking forward to lunch now. Okay, so he always looked forward to lunch, but this gave Daehyun the chance to not only make new friends, but to possibly rebuild old friendships as well.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

As they sat in the library waiting, Young Jae fiddled around with the hem of his blazer while Krystal finished up some notes for the next subject. He was a bit nervous how the meeting would go, but he had a bit of confidence that they would be able to get along. They were both friendly people after all and it would be rather surprising if they didn’t end up liking each other… in a way that two friends would like each other and not the way two lovers would. Young Jae felt like he would definitely be heartbroken if that ended up happening.

“Annnnnd… finished!” (KR) Young Jae looked over at Krystal, whom set her pen down before stretching in triumph. She had a satisfied look on her face as she let out a small whine of sorts. Once she was done stretching, she looked up to see Daehyun walking towards them, a sort of confused look on his face before he smiled a bit. “Ah! He’s here!” (KR)

Young Jae looked up, a smile instantly showing up as the two made eye contact. As Daehyun took his usual seat, Krystal looked at Young Jae before nudging him with her elbow. Looking at Krystal, Young Jae stared in confusion before Krystal nudged her head towards Daehyun. It took a moment, but once realization kicked in, Young Jae instantly sat up as he looked back at Daehyun. “O-Oh! Um… Daehyun, this is Krystal. She’s from my class. Um… Krystal, this is Daehyun.” (YJ)

“Ah… Really? Nice to meet you.” (DH) Daehyun reached across the table and held his hand out for a handshake. Once Krystal had shaken Daehyun’s hand, Daehyun had begun to open up his containers while Krystal quickly closed up her books and set them off to the side before she began eating as well. Glancing up at Daehyun, Krystal thought for a moment before leaning forward a bit.

“So, Daehyun. Have you seen Young Jae’s drawing yet?” (KR) Young Jae’s eyes widened and his face reddened as he stared at Krystal before looking at Daehyun. Daehyun had a somewhat surprised look on his face before shaking his head. Krystal smiled a bit as she adjusted her seat a bit. “It’s a really great drawing! I think you’d love it when you get the chance.” (KR)

“Oh, really?” (DH) Krystal hummed in response as she continued eating. Daehyun looked at Young Jae, a single brow raised as the two stared at one another. Young Jae lowered his head, attempting to avoid eye contact as he sheepishly poked at his food. He hadn’t expected Krystal to bring up his drawing so quickly, but it’s not like he told her that it was a secret. Of course… Young Jae did also plan to show him anyway. He was just glad that Krystal hadn’t revealed any details about what the drawing might be about. “So… what’s the, uh… relationship… between you two?” (DH)

“Hm?” (KR) Krystal looked up, blinking a few times before she thought for a moment. Well, if she recalled, Young Jae had already said something about them being classmates. What more was there to it? She didn’t really know if they counted as friends already, but it’s not like they were anything else. “We’re just classmates, possibly friends. What do you say, Young Jae?” (KR)

“H-Huh…? O-Oh… Um, I think friends is nice.” (YJ) Krystal smiled and nodded a bit as she ate a bit more. Daehyun nodded, eyeing the two suspiciously as he slowly ate. For whatever reason, Daehyun had come to the conclusion that this was the girl that Young Jae had a crush on. Sure, there didn’t seem to be much chemistry between the two, but he couldn’t help but think this way. Okay, so he does have a bit of a crush on Young Jae, but that didn’t mean that Young Jae felt the same. There may have been a rather big hint earlier today, but Daehyun couldn’t completely tell if Young Jae had just slipped up and said the wrong thing, or if he was telling the truth.

“So… Are you ready for our winter break?” (KR)

“Winter break?” (DH) Young Jae and Krystal both noticed the confused look on Daehyun’s face as he looked from one person to the other. In an attempt to make it seem as though he knew what she was talking about, Daehyun sat up as a nervous smile came on his face. “O-Oh…! Winter break! Y-Yeah, uh… I’m definitely looking forward to it.” (DH)

“Really? Are you planning anything special?” (KR) Daehyun shook his head as he casually went back to eating. Young Jae had hoped that Daehyun would at least go back and spend the holidays with his family, but maybe he was just keeping his current living situation a secret. It was possible, right? If word got out that he wasn’t living with his parents at the moment, then both rumors and trouble could end up spreading. “Ah… Then maybe a small get together would be nice. I heard that you used to be friends with Yongguk and he said that he wants to meet up again.” (KR)

Krystal had her vision focused on her food, so she hadn’t noticed the blood practically drain from Daehyun’s face as he stared at her. Sadly, Young Jae had noticed this, but he didn’t say anything. There had to be a reason behind his expression, so he wanted to make certain that he figured it out in private. “Uh… I, uh… I’ll actually be out of… town! Yeah, I’ll be out of town during winter break. I just remembered. So, uh… sorry. I’ll have to reject your offer for now.” (DH)

“Oh, really? Well, alright. Maybe during spring break then.” (KR) Well, they could have had the get together earlier, but with the constant studying that’s being forced onto them, Krystal wasn’t necessarily certain if Yongguk would be alright with it. After all, everyone already seemed quite busy now so it wouldn’t exactly be a good idea to invade into everyone’s busy schedules.

While they ate, Young Jae tried to think of when the best possible time would be to ask Daehyun about his status. He hadn’t exactly denied being in running away nor did he deny knowing Yongguk, so it must be true… right? Then again... Daehyun had constantly said that Jongup's parents weren't his own. Maybe… he should wait a few days before he asked anything. After all, Daehyun didn’t even seem to be okay with talking about his family, so maybe he wasn’t comfortable with talking about running away from his family either.
