☽Riptide☽
"No..." Dana tossed and turned in her sleep, tiny beads of sweat formed on her forehead. Her childhood nightmare was back to haunt her again. "Ready or not here I come!" She saw the little girl, running towards a younger boy. "Junhong ah, found you!" "Noona, help!" "Junhong—" she couldn't finish her sentence as a pale creature, almost human-like only with fangs and red eyes, appeared in the clearing. His thirst for blood was evident as he eyed the little children hungrily. "My my, what do we have here? Two little children wandering in the woods?" the night creature chuckled haughtily as he circled the two children like a predator. The little girl pushed her brother behind her as she protected him with her body. "Go away!" The bloodsucker frowned mockingly. "Oh dear, I don't think I can do that. I'm quite parched, and I believe you children can help me...quench my thirst." The children helplessly watched as black veins crept up the creature's face. He lunged straight for the children only to be countered by a large grey wolf; with eyes shining an electric blue. The wolf defended the children, growling at the strigoi furiously. They both started forward and clawed each other, a violent fight which rendered the children speechless. The wolf glowered at the girl and she immediately pulled her brother away from the scene, running as fast as her legs could carry her. But the strigoi wasn't having any of that. He evaded incoming the attack and darted straight for the children. He successfully grabbed the boy but the wolf had reached the girl before the vampire could take her as well. The vampire bared his teeth at the wolf, his jaw clenched and his eyes set on the girl. "Noona!" "Junhong ah!" Before the girl could run towards her brother the wolf pulled her back and the vampire bounded towards the dense woods. The last thing the little girl remembered were the tears blurring her vision as she mourned for the loss of her loved one. "No! Junhong!" Dana woke up with a startle, her wet clothes stuck to her skin as she was soaked in sweat. "Dana—" Yura burst through the door with a disgruntled expression on her face. She strode in and sat on the edge of the bed, rubbing her eyes. "This is the third time in the week, are you sure you don't need therapy?" Yura leaned over to wipe the tears that were still streaming down her face. Dana had no idea why, but this wasn't the first time she had this nightmare. It was the same one she's been having for the past 10 years. She's only had snippets and blur images thus far, never had this version of her nightmare been so vivid before. What shocked her even more, was that she recognised that clearing. And she recognised the wolf. But she couldn't recognise the boy. "Kai..." she whispered as she looked towards the bedside table for her phone. Dana scrubbed her face as she got up to change into a fresh pair of clothes. Maybe it wasn't a good idea to call him at this ungodly hour of the night. ☽ All throughout the week, Yura noticed how frazzled her roommate had been. There was a prevalent stirring of worry in her gut every time her eyes caught onto Dana's. Something was immensely troubling her. Dana's incessant claims of an imaginary Kai in the apartment, in the parking lot and school grounds, had Yura fearing for her sanity. The boy was a no show at campus the entire week, how could Dana have seen him? "Dana, I'm going out. Will you be okay by yourself?" Yura asked gingerly as she peered from behind the door. The said girl merely grunted in acknowledgement as she continued scribbling notes on her textbook. Studying always seemed to get her mind off things; and right now, Dana was almost desperate to clear her head. The door clicked shut and the girl buried her face into her hands with a sigh. The all too familiar throbbing in her head had started again. Dana had to admit, she was getting pretty bothered. And Kai was behind all of it. Ever since the day he had brought her to the clearing, she started seeing him everywhere; in her conscious and unconscious. She had visions of him; around campus, in her classes even in her living room. She tried reaching out to him but he always vanished upon touch. He was always on her mind and it was driving her crazy. The frequent migraines she had gotten were also foreign to her. Her assignment was due by the end of the week, and she had barely gotten any work done the past few days. The weekend was fast approaching, and Dana didn't want to say it out loud; but she w
