☽ The Fight ☽

As the last bit of sun disappeared into the horizon, Kai snapped his gaze up towards the dark sky, streaked with faded orange hues. The moon was at half its peak, in all its round ivory glory. The shrill howls in the far distance echoed through the vast grassy plains. Kai felt Sehun's presence beside him, warming up his wolf senses. 

  "The ritual's begun." The younger whispered, as he reminisced the old days.   Though it's been a while, Sehun could recognise the sound of the pack ritual from the opposite pole of the earth. He'd vowed to himself that he'd never live to hear another shrill howl again, but here he was. He gripped his Alpha's shoulder firmly, as if he could give all his energy for Kai to keep fighting till first light.    Kai closed his eyes, fists clenched and calling out to his inner wolf. May the Goddess protect me from the beast within.      ☽     Dana sat on the edge of Kai's bed, turning the Steele in her palm. The ruby tip glistened under her touch.   She had no idea why she was caught in between this dog fight. She could hardly understand what the Gales wanted, when it was clear she had no interest in becoming their emissary. Dana exhaled a long ragged breath, staring out the balcony, into the distance. Beyond the open clearing—beyond the thick foliage of trees, they were coming for her. And she was putting Kai's whole pack in danger.    A knock came and Dana's eyes flickered over to the door. Abel strode in, followed by a confused looking Lay.    "I sent Yura over to your mom's place like you've asked me to," He smiled softly tilting his head over in Dana's direction. Dana gratefully ran her fingers through the boy's fluffy hair, and he looked up at her, grinning in content as he walked out of the room.    Abel slowly sunk into the bed next to Dana.    "Anxious?" she asked placing a warm hand over the witch's clammy ones. Dana felt her heart rate slowing down and her tense nerves seeping out of her body. Abel smiled gently, "You know we'll protect you, whatever the cost don't you?"   Dana hastily pulled away, avoiding eye contact. "That's the thing. Who am I to be protected? You guys barely know me, and you're already throwing yourselves out there?"   Abel was quick to pull her hands back into her own, giving her the soothing warmth she needed, it almost felt like assurance.    "Dana, you're part of our pack now. You don't understand how important you are to us—to Kai. We can't just hand you over to be made use of, especially with such exquisite powers. Imagine if it falls into the wrong hands. The world would swirl into complete darkness." Abel's voice was sharp, but not piercing. "And you of all people mustn't succumb to it."     Dana's mind flashed back to when she'd almost burnt Python to death with an unknown rune. She wondered if that's what power felt like, she couldn't see it, but she felt it. And the sheer amount of power she'd used to knock the reptile out.   Needless to say, he could've died if she'd held out longer. She almost lost herself then. What would happen if she did now.      ☽     Thunder rolled as Kai led his pack into the open clearing. His eyes met Dana's jet black orbs beside him and he breathed ragged breaths, feeling his inner wolf slowly ripping at his human from within. He ran his fingers across her cheek before cupping the supple skin. Her porcelain skin absorbing his energy, her veins pulsing a deep blue.   "Dana," he exhaled as he gazed deep into her eyes. "This fight between wolves is a territorial war. You shouldn't get involved if you don't want to face unhinged wolves under the spell of a full moon."    "But you're fighting for me, I want to help—" she retorted, but her mate was faster.    "—You need to stay away from the wolves as far as possible you understand?"   The witch was confused. Her mate knew she had gotten strong enough to take them on, so why would he bind her like this?   "But Kai—"   "Dana," The Alpha practically growled in her face, his eyes glowering a dangerous electric blue. "I can't control myself. If I hurt you while I'm in that state, I'd curse myself forever."    She grimaced slightly as his claws grew out, pressing into her skin. She reached out to curl a hand around his nape, forcing him to release his grip on her cheek and pulled him down to whispered gingerly, "Then anchor yourself to my voice."   Kai's lids fluttered close, keeping his keen ears locked onto nothing else but her voice, and her heartbeat. He breathed in her scent one last time before pull
