Secrets That You Can Never Know

A tall young male enters the café.

The place is furnished in an antique sort of way, mahogany tables and chairs with red velvet pressed cushions. The décor could have been considered to have a royal French flare. The large red velvet curtains on the windows and the chandelier truly held a royal vibe, and the delicately decorated china that was on display in cabinets and remnants on tables gave the idea of a French high-tea occasion.

The boy is obviously confused as to why the place is empty as he looks around from left to right and even spins once, holding an old skateboard close to his chest for moral support.

Walking up to the counter – equipped with old fashion till – he rings the bell. A shrill sound resonates throughout the café. Yet no one can be heard moving or seen at all.

“Hello?” The boy calls, taking off his yellow straw fedora. A gift from an elder friend, one who believed that this colour would suit the boy’s classy street style.

He turns when he hears a lighter jingle from behind him. Seeing a couple entering the café. He feels his heart instantly sink in recognition of said couple. He instantly looks down at his feet and attempts to make his leave. Only to be pulled to a seat by an unknown person.

“JongUp. I want to leave.” A girl asks, her hair done up in a high pony tail, trailing down to the base of her neck in a loose ringlet. The boy she entered with, JongUp, is pushing her toward a chair. Forcing her to sit across from the other boy with the skateboard.

“Stay here and let the nice waiter take your order.” JongUp orders before running out of the café, pulling the doors shut and locking them from the outside.

Great. The girl thinks, Now I am stuck here…

The boy on the other hand is currently thinking; YongGuk Hyung, if I make it out of here with my heart still intact… I plan on killing you.

The waiter – who had pulled the boy to his seat – stood in front of them. He wasn’t exactly what you would call tall, especially next to the boy he had just pulled to his seat. His bleach blonde hair was styled perfectly in a messy sort of way, and he wore black super skinny jeans with a lose fitting dress shirt. All in all, he looked rather like a petite upper class man from the early eighteenth century.

“Good afternoon. I will be your waiter for this evening, the name is Kim KiBum. I do not plan on letting either of you leave until both your food and problems are sorted out.” The waiter stated. “Now, JunHong, JiEun. As I have been lead to understand by your wonderful friends, the situation is that you both are too stupid to realise your feelings.”

Both JiEun and JunHong look at KiBum, shock eating away at any anger or annoyance they had earlier.

“And for this sort of situation, chocolate is always really good. And so I am deciding that you shall each have a slice of our delicious raspberry chocolate tart. And to compliment the bittersweet taste of the dark chocolate that the tart consists of, talk of your bittersweet failure to notice the obvious.”

KiBum looks at the two younger patrons and laughs, “Even if I didn’t know what I do know, I would be able to tell that you two are completely besotted by each other. I mean really,” he looks JiEun in the eye, even kneeling down slightly, “How did you not notice? He hasn’t stopped looking at you since you walked in. Aren’t girls meant to be observant?”

JiEun fiddles with her fingers, watching as they bend around each other, not wishing to meat KiBum’s all-knowing gaze.

“And JunHong, she obviously has no real lovey-dovey feelings to the other guy. I mean the two guys that came in here before – DaeHyun and YoungJae – they were more involved than those two. And they aren’t even dating yet.”

KiBum straightens up, still looking at the cowering JunHong, whose head hangs as he stares at his feet.

“They will though. The younger one has the biggest crush on DaeHyun. You can see it in his eyes. Why didn’t you watch any chick flicks when you knew you liked the girl? Huh? You could have seen that the way she looks at you is romantic. Aigoo~! Why are you both so dumb?”

He sighs and turns towards the kitchen. “I’ll be right back with your tarts~!” he sings finally leaving the two alone to bask in the new found knowledge that KiBum provided them.

Dumb.

The word rang through JiEun’s head, repeating itself over and over.

KiBum was right.

Staring at her hands which she had placed in her lap she couldn’t help but hang her head.

She was meant to be more observant, to pick at all the little minute details that really didn’t mean anything. She was meant to understand what the looks meant. How she felt. She should have said something to him. Done something in order to confess her feelings. But she had done nothing except cling to JongUp. Even if she did know that they couldn’t act on their feelings – if they were shared – JiEun should have said something to JunHong.

She had been dumb.

Across from JiEun, JunHong fidgeted in his seat. JiEun liked him too. All this time he had thought otherwise. He had thought that JiEun had been kissing JongUp behind his back. To think that his best friend – and probably one of the nicest guys in the entire world – would do such a thing without even saying something to the rest of the house, JunHong couldn’t believe himself. He had accused JongUp of being… he didn’t even have a word for it. Human really…

JunHong was an idiot. He should have realised that JongUp was protecting JiEun from what he was. Protecting the secret like he was told to do.

He was the biggest idiot in the world.

KiBum returned, two chocolate tarts in his hands.

“I see you guys are still processing all of this.” He says, setting a plate in front of each of them. “But to be honest, there isn’t much to process.”

JiEun looks up at the waiter. “What do you mean?” she asks in a squeaky voice.

KiBum sighs, “Should I pull up a chair and become your councillor?”

“Please…” JunHong mutters under his breath, picking up his fork and twisting it in between his fingers, before stabbing the tart.

Again, KiBum sighs, his shoulders heaving up and down in an exaggerated movement. He takes two steps and pulls out a chair; he drags it behind him before spinning it so the back of the chair faces the table. He straddles it and looks at the two teenagers.

“Where do we start?” he questions himself.

JunHong picks at his tart, pulling it apart slowly. The thin chocolate biscuit casing slowly crumbling under the pressure of his fork.

It would be an understatement to say he is nervous.

JiEun on the other hand, is watching him from the corner of her eye. Trying to focus on KiBum’s movements in order to distract herself from the obviously shy and adorable younger boy.

“Okay.” KiBum starts. “JiEun, you like JunHong.”

The girl blushes, nodding as she looks at the table.

“And JunHong, you like JiEun.”

The other just mushes the smooth chocolate of the tart into the plate with his fork.

“It started when for you JiEun?”

“I’m not sure… Maybe after I remade his textbook…”

“That really was you?” JunHong looks up, shock lighting his face.

JiEun just nods, not making eye contact. The younger male returns to mashing the tart under his fork whilst blushing

“Will you stop?” KiBum shouts at him. “I spent all of yesterday making that and now look at it! It’s barely worth eating!” Rising KiBum pushes his chair away and raises a hand above his head, ready to slap JunHong’s shoulder or face, he is unsure yet.

JiEun stands quickly, grabbing KiBum’s hand and attempting to pull it away. However, KiBum is stronger and twist the grip back onto her, he pushes her down and twists her face up before anyone can stop it, KiBum is pushing JiEun’s lips to JunHong’s.

“Now. Kiss.” He mutters to himself.
