Chasing Pavement

Stand By You

Several weeks later, Junsu knocked on the door of his Jaejoong hyung’s restaurant for their bi-weekly late dinners. He was about to knock again when suddenly the door opened and there stood Mickey, his earphones hanging around his neck with loud music once again blasting from the buds.

“Max?” Junsu asked as he motioned at the earphones.

“You know it.” Mickey said with a smile as he led the older man to the kitchen. Since Mickey was living in the restaurant and therefore was there when Junsu would come over late at night, it became tradition to include the young man in their bi-weekly dinners.

“You’re late.” Jaejoong said brandishing a knife at his brother as Junsu entered the kitchen followed by Mickey.

“I know, I know.” Junsu said his hands raised in surrender. “I needed to pass by a friend who gave me something.” He added.

“Well, the food’s almost cold and you made Mickey here wait.” Jaejoong said shaking his head as the two sat on the stools around the kitchen counter.

“Ah, but even Mickey will have to appreciate what made me late.” Junsu said as he stood up again headed outside the kitchen and into the restaurant’s front.

Jaejoong spooned the spaghetti he cooked onto plates when suddenly music began playing over the restaurant’s speakers, a familiar melody drifting into the kitchen. Mickey sat there and listened when suddenly Jaejoong dropped a plate, his hand immediately clutching the key dangling around his neck.

“Seon sang!” Mickey said running towards the older man who was already on the floor picking up the pieces. “Be careful!” He said. Unfortunately Jaejoong heeded too late when he grabbed a broken shard and wounded himself.

Jaejoong hissed as he pulled on his finger squeezing it as blood came out. "Aigoo, are you okay?" Mickey asked Jaejoong as he crouched in front of the older man.

“I-It's no big deal," Jae said waving off Mickey's concern. "I just got surprised is all.” He added when suddenly Mickey pulled on his hand and bit on the wound gently on the blood.

Jaejoong froze. Only one man has ever done that to him in his life. Pulling back his hand, he shoved Mickey back who fell on his in surprise as Junsu entered the kitchen saying, "Hyung, this is Yoochunnie's new c..." Then trailed off when he saw Jaejoong staring at Mickey in surprise.

“H-Hyungie?” Junsu asked his face puzzled as he looked at Jaejoong then Mickey and back.

Jaejoong stood up quickly holding on to his finger his gaze flying towards Junsu before he looked back at Mickey then stammered, “I… I-I’m sorry.” He said before running upstairs.

“Are you okay?” Junsu asked Mickey who stood up and nodded his head. “Is he okay?” His eyes following his hyung’s footsteps.

“I don’t know. He was putting food on the plates when he suddenly dropped one after the music played.” Mickey said as he grabbed a broom from the kitchen closet and began sweeping up the glass.

“Oh.” Junsu said his face falling. “I… I better go talk to him.” He said while the latter nodded.

Heading upstairs, Junsu found his hyung sitting on his bed his gaze looking outside his window, his finger still bleeding while his other hand held on the key dangling from his neck. Without a word, Junsu went into his brother’s bathroom and rummaged through the medicine cabinet. Heading towards the older man, Junsu sat on the bed, the mattress dipping with the added weight.

“Here, let me take a look at that.” He said as he began to clean his brother’s wound then wrapping it in a band aid. Afterwards, he kissed it and said, “There, there. All better.”

Jaejoong blinked then he looked at his brother. Smoothing his hair away from his forehead, Jaejoong folded Junsu in a hug and said, “How did I live without you Junsie?” He whispered.

“Sadly.” Junsu said without blinking. “I missed you a lot when you were overseas and even your visits where never enough.” He said murmuring into the older man’s neck.

Jae’s eyes filled with tears. In all the years that he’s been gone, his baby brother had to live life without him. He can still vividly remember the day he left Junsu in Leeteuk and Sora's care when he decided to leave. However, after he left for Japan, he made sure that he kept in contact with Junsu almost everyday through phone calls or video chats. But still he found that it wasn’t enough. He wasn’t there when Junsu would get sick or would get a scrape or a wound. He was eternally grateful for Leeteuk and Sora for taking care of his brother but still he regretted not being there.

“I’m sorry baby.” Jaejoong said his arms tightening around his brother.

“I know. But it had to happen.” Junsu said pulling back and looking at his brother in the eye. “It was the only way you could get all five of us back together.” He whispered cupping his brother’s cheek in his palm.

The tears he’s been holding in for so long finally fell. Despite the fact that Junsu grew up without his hyungie beside him, he never resented Jaejoong. The fact that he acknowledges Jaejoong’s real reason for leaving, the fact that he accepts it, made Jaejoong love his brother more. “I feel so selfish.” Jae said.

“Why?” Junsu asked as he wiped away at his brother’s tears. "You are the least selfish person I know.”

Jaejoong smiled at his younger brother as he wiped away at his tears. “You have a good heart Junsie. Don’t ever lose it.” He said.

“I won’t.” Junsu said with a smile as he stood up to put away the stuff he cleaned the wound with. Then he grabbed Jaejoong’s hand and said, “Now come on, I’m sure Mickey’s all worried downstairs after what happened. Besides I think that oaf is really hungry. I can practically hear his stomach growling from downstairs.”

Jaejoong smiled at his brother’s description of the younger man. As soon as they got downstairs they made their way into the kitchen where Mickey was sitting faithfully on the stool waiting for the two of them.

“Are you okay seon sang nim?” Mickey asked standing up concern written all over his face.

“I’m okay Mickey. I’m sorry for pushing you earlier.” Jae said as he walked over to the younger man and patting him on the shoulder.

“I apologize for being so forward.” Mickey replied. “I guess it was just instinct.” He murmured.

Jae nodded without saying anything. Heading over to the stove, he turned it on again to heat up the sauce as Junsu sat beside Mickey music still blasting from his earphonesthat hung around his neck.

“Yah, don’t your ears hurt when you’ve got the volume up that loud?” Junsu askedMickey who was still looking at Jaejoong.

Mickey didn't reply at what Junsu said. Puzzled, Junsu had to punch Mickey on his right shoulder and said, "Yah! I'm asking you a question!"

Mickey turned to his right to look at Junsu and said, “What was that hyung?” He asked.

Junsu rolled his eyes and said, “I asked if your ears don’t hurt with your volume so loud.” He said.

Mickey shrugged. “It’s the best way to listen to Max.”

“Did you know that he’ll be having a concert in Seoul soon?” Junsu asked.

“He will?” Mickey said excitedly.

Junsu nodded. “I can get you tickets if you want. My agent knows his agent so I’m sure I can pull a couple of strings.” Junsu said nonchalantly.

Mickey stood up and excitedly hugged Junsu patting him on the back. “Ow!” Junsu said as the pats felt more like swats.

“Oh, sorry hyung.” Mickey said his grin splitting his face like a watermelon slice.

“What’s the big deal about this Max anyway?” Jaejoong asked as he served up the spaghetti to the two.

“He’s only like one of the best rock artists of my generation seon sang.” Mickey said his eyes gleaming. “He’s partially deaf in one ear but he trained himself to be a singer. Granted a lot of his music is heavy metal rock which means a lot of screaming but he’s worked hard to be where he is.”

“Wasn’t he orphaned at an early age?” Junsu asked Mickey.

“Yup, his parents died when he was really young and so he stayed in an orphanage for a while.” Mickey said with a shrug as he dug into the spaghetti served by Jaejoong.

Jae blinked at the description given by the two. “H-How old would this Max be Mickey?”

“Uhmrmm… I wrrnt knowrr.” Mickey tried to say since his mouth was quite full.

“Aish! What did I say about talking with your mouth full.” Jae said lightly smacking the young man on the back of his head.

Junsu couldn’t help but laugh. Rarely did his hyung ever do that to him and he couldn’t help but tease Mickey so he stuck his tongue out at the younger man who glared back at him with a look of promised retaliation.

After dinner, Junsu stretched once again which made Jaejoong tut at him saying that stretching wasn’t good right after eating. Teasing his hyung by saying that Mickey has started doing it too, Jae threatened him by saying that he won’t feed Junsu for the next week if he wouldn’t stop influencing the younger boy badly. Unfortunately, Junsu now has Mickey’s loyalty after being promised Max concert tickets.

Jae shook his head as he wrapped the rest of the food for Leeteuk’s midnight snack. It now took longer for Junsu to go home as he and Mickey would play at least two rounds of video games in Mickey’s room before Junsu would head home. Wiping at kitchen counters, Jae waited until it was midnight before barging into Mickey’s room and demanding that Junsu head home.

The two would usually put up a fight but then lose because Jaejoong would then both threaten them with starvation. Junsu would eventually give up and gather his doggie bags and give Mickey a high five before leaving the two.

“I’m sorry you had to clean up again seon sang nim.” Mickey said feeling a bit embarrassed as he grabbed the back of his neck with his hand.

Jae smiled and said, “Don’t worry about it. Go ahead and get some sleep okay?” He said rubbing the young man’s arm again. Mickey nodded as he watched the older man head upstairs.

But then Jae turned around as he stood on the stairs and said, "Mickey?"

"Neh, seong sang?" Mickey said.

"Don't call me seon sang nim anymore. I think hyung will do just fine." He said, his hand unconsciously creeping to his neck once again as he held the key.

"I... W-Wouldn't that... I mean, Junsu hyung... He might..." Mickey said feeling a bit flustered.

Jaejoong smiled as he watched the young man look so conflicted as he pushed their relationship forward. "Mickey-ah, I'm sure Junsu would be happy if you started calling me hyung." He simply said.

Mickey nodded and said, "Yeh, h-hyung."

Jae smiled and nodded before turning around and heading up to his room. Once in bed, Jae once again looked at the moonlight while holding the key between his fingers, its contours as he finally fell asleep.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Jae awoke suddenly when he heard a noise come from downstairs. “Mickey?” Jae croaked as he roused from his sleep. Putting on his eyeglasses, Jae made his way downstairs into the kitchen when he heard the noise again coming from the front of the restaurant.

Adrenaline began to rush through Jaejoong’s body. Grabbing himself a chef’s knife, he made his way to the swinging doors that led into the front of his small ramen shop. Taking a deep breath to calm himself, he slowly took a peak from the door’s window when suddenly music began to play from the front.

Puzzled, Jaejoong stood straight and pushed at the door when suddenly laid out before him was a baby grand piano with a young Yoochun playing the theme from his music box, the exact same piece that Junsu played in the restaurant earlier. “C-Chunnie?” Jaejoong asked.

“Hyung.” Yoochun said with a smile.

“W-What is this?” Jaejoong asked.

“It’s time hyung.” Chunnie said.

“It’s time for what?” Jaejoong asked.

“It’s time.” Yoochun said with a smile.

“Time for what Chunnie?” Jaejoong asked again when suddenly Yoochun started to fade along with the piano. “D-Don’t go Chun!” Jae cried realizing that he was dreaming.

“It’s time to find him.” Chunnie’s voice whispered as Jaejoong woke up in a sweat.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The next day, Jaejoong headed back to Leeteuk’s office only this time, the receptionist said that Leeteuk was out for the day. “I’m actually here for Choi Siwon-shii.” Jaejoong said.

“Oh. Well, let me check if he’s available Jaejoong-shii. Why don’t you take a seat?” The receptionist said.

“Thanks Wookie.” Jae said. “Remind me to bring you some ramen when I come back, neh?”

The receptionist nodded as he called Siwon’s office. After a brief conversation, the receptionist called Jae and said, “He needed to shift a few conference calls around but he said that he’ll be able to speak with you in about five minutes.”

“Oh, I didn’t mean to do that. He didn’t have to go through that trouble.” Jaejoong said feeling embarrassed.

“Oh don’t be. I’m just glad he decided not to cancel all his afternoon schedules Jaejoong-shii.” Wookie said with a smile.

The door to Siwon’s office opened and Siwon himself stepped out to greet Jae. “I’m sorry for making you wait Jaejoong-shii.”

“It’s no trouble at all. I should be the one who’s sorry for putting you through so much trouble Siwon-shii.” Jae said as he entered Siwon’s office.

“Ah, it’s my pleasure to be of service to you Jaejoong-shii.” He said as he motioned for Jaejoong to sit. “Now, what can I do for you?” he asked.

Jae hesitated but then he remembered his dream the night before. Taking a deep breath, he faced Siwon and said, “I want you to help me find Changmin.”

Siwon blinked and fell silent. The Jung brothers case was one of his earliest cases as a young prosecutor. It also changed him a great deal which is why he decided to be mentored by Leeteuk. He knew that he helped change the course of five lives when the judge gave her decision that day but it was his job. Now maybe he can help set things right.

“It will be difficult for us to do that without the help of Changmin’s biological brothers.” Siwon said as he told Jaejoong the truth bluntly.

Jaejoong’s face fell. He knew that he’d hit a few road blocks in his search but this one seemed to be quite the test. He has not been in contact with either Yunho or Yoochun ever since.

“If I can work on that, will we be able to find him?” Jaejoong asked.

“It will make things go a bit smoother. However, unless Changmin himself will agree to meet with his brothers, there is no guarantee. Closed adoptions are tricky because the other party must agree to be contacted. Since there is no blood relation between you and Changmin, getting him to agree might prove even more difficult.” Siwon said.

“He… He doesn’t need to speak with me if he doesn’t want to. He… won’t remember me anyway.” Jae said quietly. “I just need to find him so I can give him back.” Jae said shaking his head. “I know it doesn’t make much sense Siwon-shii but I need to do this.” Jaejoong said.

Siwon didn’t say anything but instead nodded his head. “Get me one of his brothers to sign off on a request and I’ll deal with the court.” He said.

Jae nodded as he gathered his things to stand when he suddenly he stopped. Siwon sensing that Jae hesistated began to ask, "Was there anything else Jaejoong-shii?"

Jae began to bite on his lower lip unsure of whether to even ask but then decided to anyway, "M-My apprentice mentioned a young man by the name of Max." He said as Siwon nodded. "He's supposed to be this really popular rockstar." He added.

"Ah, yes." Siwon said recognizing the name.

"He was supposed to have lived in an orphanage as a child and he also happens to be partially deaf." Jaejoong said in a rush.

Siwon nodded understanding where Jaejoong was going. "Jaejoong-shii, I can only imagine how hard it must have been for you when Changmin had to be adopted. I can only wish that I were the lawyer then that I am now. Rest assured however that I will do everything in my power to help bring Changmin back to you." Siwon said as he reached over and touched Jae's hand.

"If this Max is someone whom you think may be Changmin then I will look into that as well." He added. "However, I would rather that you do not get your hopes up. It is not uncommon for celebrities to make up stories about their past."

Nodding his head, Jae thanked Siwon and left his office. After he got back to the restaurant, he immediately went on the internet and did a little bit of research.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Siwon has redeemed himself you guys! I do apologize to all the Siwon-biased folks. But now he has redeemed himself :)

So, I have to apologize for all this confusion about who Mickey is. Unfortunately, I can't give you any more clarifications than the clues I keep leaving in the story. They're scattered everywhere :)

Chapter 33: Uuuh this powerful feel through the story.. cant stop the tears from flooding, You can feel the love from every moments of their live here T_T. The court scene esp portrayed realistically.. yunjae struggled with how society view their uality.. But honestly there is millions children out there who longing for bit of family warmth, and another millions who get abused even in their supposedly ideal straight parent! So it just disgusting how some people disregard the child's welbeing for their personal revenge toward gay or anything different going as far as to separate a perfectly happy family!! So really love yoochun for his words at siwon.. the world really need more this wisdom! Guess this will be one my most loved family fiction :) really adores yunjae domestic life as five whenever it is.. its so heartwarming in their younger days that as teenager yunjae able to put so much responsibility and affection for their brothers, honestly they were inborn to be umma&appa <3 and yeaaay finally they found minnie again! I think micky remember jae heck why he approach him, but to think about it changmin just toddler when they are separated lol.. well hope yunjae and their children have it fate in their favor this time they really deserved all happiness and fluffiness in the world :D <3 <3 <3 <3 <3
